Soon after “Saltburn” debuted on Amazon Prime, it joined the 1 million watch club on Letterboxd (the leading social media app for film lovers) and was one of the fastest to do so this year. The film has completely taken over social media due to its provocative, erotic sensibilities. “Transfixing and hypnotic, writer/director Emerald Fennell has crafted a provocative and diabolical masterpiece”, writes Awards Daily. Despite being nearly a month since its release, “Saltburn” remains in the top 3 most watched programs on the platform, film or television, in both the UK and US.
“Saltburn” reaped five bids at the Critics’ Choice Awards including Best Picture. Lead Barry Keoghan and scene-stealer Rosamund Pike contended at the Globes. Fennell’s sophomore feature merited 11 longlist mentions at BAFTA.

The BAFTAs have a soft spot for home-grown talent. Earlier this year, “Good Luck to You, Leo Grande” scored four bids at the British Academy Film Awards, including Best Actor (Daryl McCormack) and Best Actress (Emma Thompson). Before that, in 2022, Adeel Akhtar snuck into the Best Actor lineup for “Ali & Ava” and Joanna Scanlan won Best Actress for “After Love.”
This pattern of Brits recognizing Brits could bode well for Daniel Kaluuya this year, who makes his directorial debut with the new Netflix drama “The Kitchen.” The film depicts a dystopian London in which all social housing has been eliminated. The focus in the story are the residents of The Kitchen, a community that refuses to leave their homes despite their struggles. At the heart of the film is Kane Robinson‘s (also known as Kano) Izi, who takes Jedaiah Bannerman‘s young boy under his wing and tries...

Seven Kings Must Die concludes the story of Uhtred Ragnarsson, a decades-long frenemy of the English crown since the days of King Alfred the Great. It’s largely adapted from Bernard Cornwell’s final instalment in his Saxon Stories books, War Lord, along with elements of the two previous novels, and tracks the contested succession to the royal throne following the death of King Edward.
A significant time jump has taken place since the final moments of The Last Kingdom season five, during which Aelswith, Hild and Eadith have all passed or moved away. A core of male characters remains though, including Uhtred, Finan, Sihtric, Father Pyrlig and Aldhelm. They’re joined by brand new characters, as below.
Laurie Davidson as Ingilmundr
The biggest addition to The Last Kingdom’s regular cast is Aethelstan’s new trusted advisor, Ingilmundr, a Danish-born Christian who shows a powerful influence over King Edward’s successor.

It feels serendipitous that Scrapper, a somber slice-of-life British melodrama, screened at the Sundance Film Festival just days after hysterical reporting on Prince Harry’s book, Spare, and the announcement of King Charles’ coronation plans. Finding it a bit hard to sympathize and identify with––or care about––the ongoing drama surrounding the U.K.’s Royal Family? You can bet the characters in Scrapper wouldn’t care less, either. Audience members watching Charlotte Regan’s film will, however, care deeply about 12-year-old Georgie and her existence on the outskirts of London.
Scrapper is a remarkably assured first feature for director Charlotte Regan, who follows a string of acclaimed shorts and music videos. While its working-class milieu calls to mind noteworthy British dramas like Andrea Arnold’s Fish Tank and Clio Barnard’s Ali & Ava, Scrapper has a different feel. There is more humor, for starters––some of it derived from its protagonist,...

David Cronenberg plays the hits in “Crimes of the Future” (Neon), but there’s no other filmmaker today with hits like his. Viggo Mortensen and Léa Seydoux are a pair of surgery-based performance artists whose interests intersect with a sect of plastic-eaters, while bureaucrats Kristen Stewart (giving the screen’s most divisive performance since Jared Leto in “House of Gucci”) and Don McKellar look on in fannish amazement. 11. Ali & Ava (Clio Barnard; July 29)
Following The Arbor, The Selfish Giant, and Dark River, British director Clio Barnard’s latest is once again set in Bradford and this time focuses on a love story. The Cannes and TIFF selection Ali & Ava follows Adeel Akhtar and Claire Rushbrook, who play a lonely pair that find unexpected affectation for one another. "An undeniable and attractive glow of authenticity." Greenwich Entertainment has debuted an official US trailer for the lovely indie gem titled Ali & Ava, opening in art house theaters in the US this July. It first premiered in the Directors' Fortnight sidebar at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival last year, and later stopped by the Toronto & Karlovy Vary Film Festivals where it picked up more raves. The wonderfully warm Adeel Akhtar and Claire Rushbrook star as Ali and Ava, respectfully – both lonely for different reasons. They meet and sparks fly, bonding over music. Over a lunar month a deep connection begins to grow, despite the legacy of Ava's past relationship, and Ali's emotional turmoil at the breakdown of his marriage. One of the best low key romances I've seen in years, it's an unexpected but heartfelt joy to discover. It's one of those films for people that feel they might never find love,...

From Billy Liar to My Summer of Love, the county’s moors and mill towns have been fertile ground for film-makers. Clio Barnard’s Bradford romance is no exception
Claire Rushbrook and Adeel Akhtar are the middle-aged lovers defying familial prejudice and cultural barriers in Ali & Ava (arriving on major VOD platforms on Monday), but that’s only one of the romances unfolding in British director Clio Barnard’s gentle, sentimental film. More metaphorically, Ali & Ava extends Barnard’s ongoing devotion to the Yorkshire city of Bradford, not far from her own home town of Otley.
It’s her third film set in the once-booming beneficiary of the Industrial Revolution, and while she doesn’t over-romanticise Bradford’s mixture of Victorian grandeur and contemporary poverty, a palpable affection for its physical and social geography softens the edges of its realism. More so than in Barnard’s previous Bradford-set films,...

Jane Campion’s “The Power of the Dog” has been named the best film of 2021 at the Ee British Academy Film Awards, which were presented on Sunday in London by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA).
Campion’s Western drama has been a favorite all awards season, and it is the one major film not to have a significant stumble on the road to the Academy Awards, which will take place in two weeks. Although questions remain about its vulnerability under the Academy’s preferential system of vote counting, the BAFTA win is a strong indicator that it remains the film to beat, even if BAFTA and Oscar voters have only agreed once in the past eight years.
Will Smith won the leading actor award for “King Richard,” with Benedict Cumberbatch (“The Power of the Dog”) the only other Oscar nominee in the category. In the leading actress category,...

Adeel Akhtar and Claire Rushbrook beguile in this tender, funny romance, which also celebrates the city where it’s set
A pair of wonderfully winning performances from Claire Rushbrook and Adeel Akhtar lie at the heart of this unexpectedly warm and typically compelling drama from British writer-director Clio Barnard. Described by its creator as a love story about two people who are “a catalyst for change in each other’s lives”, it’s a heartfelt piece that marries the poetic grit of Barnard’s 2013 film The Selfish Giant with something resembling a later-life Romeo and Juliet romance – a fable grounded in reality. Playing out over the course of a lunar month, and drawing inspiration from real-life characters whom Barnard met while filming her previous features, Ali & Ava is a vibrant work that uses the transcendent power of song to turn a streetwise tale into a diegetic musical, with genuinely surprising results.

Ali & Ava is a wonderful new drama, featuring two remarkable leading performances from Adeel Akhtar and Claire Rushbook, and brought together beautifully by filmmaker Clio Barnard. To mark the film’s release we had the pleasure of interviewing all three of the aforementioned talent, split between our regular interviewers Stefan Pape and Scott Davis. We discussed the characters at hand, and the unique aspect of this project, which tells an ordinary love story about ordinary people (how novel). We also dig into the musical elements of the production, and Rushbrook casts the mind back to the start of her career, and the lasting impact Mike Leigh had her on career. Though as things stand, there’s a new masterful kitchen-sink-realist on the block, and Barnard is the name. Watch all three of the interviews in their entirety below.

Cannes’ Directors Fortnight, the section running alongside the Cannes Film Festival, is set to change its leadership after the 2022 edition. It will be Paolo Moretti’s third and last edition as artistic director of the program.
The Srf (Société des réalisateurs de films) which is the governing body of Directors Fortnight, announced the news on Feb. 9 and said that more changes are being planned. “The administration board of the Srf wishes to rethink thoroughly Directors’ Fortnight, its name, its singularity, and its strategic and political role.”
Moretti joined Directors’ Fortnight in 2019 from the Roche-sur-Yon Festival, where he had been artistic director since 2014. At 30, Adeel Akhtar was all but homeless, now he’s been nominated for this year’s Baftas. Here, he talks about the beauty of ordinary lives
Adeel Akhtar was living in a van, wondering if he should move back in with his parents. It was 2010. He’d recently appeared in Four Lions, the Chris Morris satire, in which he plays a Muslim extremist who, in an uncanny set of events, blows himself up in a Yorkshire sheep field. The film had been successful. (The New York Times called it “stiletto sharp”.) But it did not immediately become the career tipping point Akhtar hoped it might. So there he was: 30 years old, not well off, suffering after the break-up of a “messy” relationship, recording audition tapes from his van. The work had dried up, but he wasn’t hustling. Even when he got a gig, he sometimes wouldn’t bother learning his lines.
The BAFTA Film Awards nominations announced this afternoon in London offer up a diverse crop, and the highest number of female nominees on record; they’re also notable for a strong British presence and Will Smith’s first-ever mention.
There is one category — Director — that stands out as a bit of a head-scratcher. Not necessarily in a bad way, but surprising nevertheless. The field has an equal split of male and female filmmakers, however the list strays far from the recent DGA nominations, and barely aligns with the Best Film race at BAFTA.
One explanation for the non-alignment could be that BAFTA’s Director nominees are chosen by a nominating jury, while the Best Film nominees are voted on by the entire membership.

“Dune” led all films in nominations for the 2022 Ee British Academy Film Awards, which were announced on Thursday by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA).
Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic received 11 nominations, with Jane Campion’s “The Power of the Dog” receiving eight, Kenneth Branagh’s “Belfast” landing six and Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Licorice Pizza,” Cary Joji Fukunaga’s “No Time to Die” and Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story” receiving five each.
In the Best Film category, “Dune,” “The Power of the Dog,” “Belfast” and “Licorice Pizza” will compete with Adam McKay’s “Don’t Look Up.”
As usual for BAFTA since rule changes last year designed to make the nominations more diverse and give smaller films a chance, the director and acting categories were long on indie films and diverged wildly from the favorites expected to receive Oscar nominations on Feb. 8.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts has unveiled its awards nominations, and they’re precisely the agents of chaos that many have been anticipating.
Only the second edition of the BAFTA Film Awards since the institute’s groundbreaking diversity review in 2020, this year’s nominations are full of surprises that reflect a shifting membership. While James Bond movie “No Time to Die,” which grossed $131 million at the U.K. box office, was expected to lead nominations, that honor instead goes to Denis Villeneuve’s epic sci-fi thriller “Dune,” which earned 11 nods, with many of those in technical categories.
Jane Campion’s moody western “The Power of the Dog” scored eight nominations, while Kenneth Branagh’s personal coming-of-age drama “Belfast” received six. Daniel Craig’s swan song as Bond, “No Time to Die,” picked up five nods, alongside Paul Thomas Anderson’s 1970s-set “Licorice Pizza” and Steven Spielberg’s musical reboot “West Side Story.
