Acclaimed out of the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, the Studio Canal addiction and rehabilitation drama, “The Outrun,” opens in the U.K. in the early fall. Starring Saoirse Ronan and Paapa Essiedu, a life-changing escape into the wilds of Orkney awaits in the new “Outrun.”. Based on Amy Liptrot’s best-selling memoir and directed by German filmmaker Nora Fingscheidt—known for “The Unforgivable” featuring Sandra Bullock— “The Outrun” received much praise at Sundance, especially for Ronan’s lead performance.

“The Outrun,” the adaptation of Amy Liptrot’s deeply raw and lyrical 2016 memoir about addiction, recovery and nature, premiered in Sundance this year to stellar reviews, with many awards prophets already suggesting that the film could take Saoirse Ronan — who stars in and produces the film — back to the Oscars in 2025.
For producer Sarah Brocklehurst, the Sundance premiere also marked something of an enjoyable full circle, landing almost five years to the day after the Sundance 2019 debut of “Animals.” The film, which screens at the Berlin Film Festival, also marks the first feature from her Brock Media banner.
“Animals,” based on Emma Jane Unsworth’s novel about hedonism and friendship (described as a “Withnail for Girls”) and starring Holliday Grainger and Alia Shawkat, may not have been Brocklehurst’s debut film (that was 2012’s “Black Pond”), but she claims it was a career game-changer. “It proved to myself and probably...

The First Weekend of the 2024 Sundance Film Festival Saw the Debut of a New Wave of Oscar Contenders
While “Oscars” sometimes gets treated like a dirty word that may pull focus from the hundreds of films premiering at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, the past few days on the ground in Park City, Utah have been a big reminder of the increased interconnectivity between the festival and the Academy Awards.
For example, the first night of this year’s fest saw current Best Supporting Actor frontrunner Robert Downey Jr. give his “Oppenheimer” director Christopher Nolan the inaugural Sundance Institute Trailblazer Award at the opening night gala. That same event also saw “May December” and “Past Lives” producer Christine Vachon present the Vanguard Award for Fiction to multiple Oscar contender Celine Song, the filmmaker behind the latter film, which premiered at the festival last year.
Actors like Colman Domingo and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, who have made waves this awards season with their performances in “Rustin” and “Origin,” also happen to be at Sundance with other projects,...

Nora Fingscheidt’s The Outrun, a Scotland-set drama starring Saoirse Ronan, will have its world premiere at the 2024 Berlin International Film Festival, screening in Berlin’s Panorama section.
The drama is adapted from Amy Liptrot’s best-selling memoir about a recovering alcoholic — played by four-time Oscar nominee Ronan — who returns to her home on the windswept wilderness of Scotland’s Orkney Islands. Fingscheidt made her debut with System Crasher at the 2019 Berlinale. Her English-language follow-up was 2021’s The Unforgivable, a Netflix drama starring Sandra Bullock.
The Outrun is among the first 11 titles picked by Panorama for its 2024 lineup.
Other Panorama highlights include Andrea Gets a Divorce, an Austrian drama from famed actor and comedian Josef Hader, starring Birgit Minichmayr (Everyone Else) as policewoman Andrea trying to escape the confines of her provincial town; Paradises of Diane from Swiss directing duo Carmen Jaquier and Jan Gassmann, about the antihero Diane, who...

Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos again explained his company’s stance on prioritizing streaming-first releases in lieu of conventional theatrical windows. “People keep asking me, ‘Why don’t you do things like everyone else does?'” he said while speaking at Bloomberg Screentime conference in Los Angeles on Thursday. “Then I look at the financial results and say ‘Oh, maybe this isn’t what other people want.”
This is not remotely the first time Netflix has been grilled on this subject. Nor is it the first time Sarandos has defended what is quickly becoming a minority viewpoint within the industry.
Amazon and Apple reportedly plan to invest $1 billion each per year in theatrically-bound feature films. Legacy studios like Disney and Universal have mostly (but not entirely) ceased day-and-date releases or sending theatrically intended movies to streaming platforms. Netflix now mostly stands alone in terms of releasing big-deal movies either sans a...

Netflix seems to be tired of people asking, “What is a Netflix show?”
In a letter to shareholders Wednesday, it attempted an answer. What it came up with is that a hit Netflix show is, well, a hit Netflix show. You know, like, “Beef, “Queen Charlotte,” “Love Is Blind” or “The Night Agent” — any show that “super-serves the audience,” as the company put it.
Tautologies aside, it might have a point. Viewers tuned in, and subscribers paid up, to the tune of 5.9 million net new additions in the June quarter. Whether that was because Netflix started cracking down on password sharing in earnest or because its popular shows were popular, Netflix has reached a critical mass that transcends tentpoles, franchises and familiar brands.

Every month it seems like a new film or TV show crashes its way into Netflix’s lists of their most popular titles. First unveiled in June 2021, the streamer’s four Top 10 lists — for English TV, English Film, non-English TV, and non-English Film — are getting a shake-up, and the changes mean that there’s a new English language series that will take the crown as the streamer’s most popular show.
“Wednesday” has now usurped “Stranger Things” Season 4 as the most viewed English-language series on Netflix. That’s because under a new model for tracking the Top 10, the ranking will now be determined by the number of times a series or movie is viewed rather than its raw number of hours.
Also under the new system, titles will now be tracked over the course of their first 91 days on the streamer, rather than the first 28 days. If that number sounds a little arbitrary,...

Jennifer Lopez’s thriller film has entered the streamer’s list of Top 10 most popular English-language films at No. 8, knocking Scorsese’s three-and-a-half hour mobster epic out of the upper echelon.
Netflix announced the news on Tuesday, along with the release of viewership numbers for the week of May 29 to June 4. “The Mother,” which has streamed for four weeks after premiering on Netflix May 12, has now been watched for a total of 229.30 million total hours by Netflix subscribers. That’s enough to place it between “Extraction” (231.340 million hours) and “Purple Hearts” (228.69 million hours) on the all-time list, and bump “The Irishman,” which peaked at 214.57 million hours viewed after its first 28 days on the streamer, from the list.

Ted Sorrandoes was asked point-blank in Tuesday’s quarterly earnings call about resisting Netflix’s current reluctance to give their films conventional theatrical releases, a stance that has now put the company at odds with most of their streaming competition. The short answer: Don’t stop a horse in mid-stream.
“The film division is doing great,” stated Sarandos. “They really are building out some great films. The success at the Oscars [like “All Quiet on the Western Front”] was great but even better than that [was that] the movies that won so big were also very popular with fans.” We’re really happy with the investment in film.”
The comments came as rival streaming companies, including Apple TV+ and Amazon’s Prime Video, reportedly made moves to invest around $1 billion each per year in theatrically-targeted movies. Alongside David Zaslav’s stated preference for theatrical titles, this makes Netflix an outlier in still prioritizing...

Netflix shocked the industry last week with the news that two respected film executives, Lisa Nishimura and Ian Bricke, were leaving the company in an apparent nod toward austerity. But the move left many questioning just what Netflix’s strategy is for its cinematic future, and whether it will lead to a power struggle between co-ceo Ted Sarandos, who is adamant that Netflix is a streaming-first company, and film chairman Scott Stuber, who has stated that he would like Netflix to become a true cinematic force to be reckoned with, an aspiration that may require a far more substantial theatrical investment.
“There are concerns being whispered around the industry that this move from Netflix could be signaling an end to the high-quality content we’ve seen them get behind in recent years, and — potentially — a return to the more formulaic ‘sure thing’ kind of content that is lower cost but more certain financially,...

Michael Jackson is getting the biopic treatment. Lionsgate and director Antoine Fuqua are taking on the filmmaker’s life in a film titled Michael, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
Graham King, a seasoned hand at biopics with the Oscar-winning Queen film Bohemian Rhapsody under his belt, is producing along with John Branca and John McClain, who are the co-executors of the Michael Jackson estate. John Logan, who penned Gladiator and The Aviator, wrote the script.
“The first films of my career were music videos, and I still feel that combining film and music are a deep part of who I am,” said Fuqua in a statement. “For me, there is no artist with the power, the charisma, and the sheer musical genius of Michael Jackson. I was influenced to make music videos by watching his work – the first Black artist to play in heavy rotation on MTV. His music and...

Hugh Grant has spoken about his cameo in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Story.

One cameo to particularly delight fans was Grant, who appears in the film as Philip, detective Benoit Blanc’s partner who answers the door to their apartment when Andi comes knocking.

Despite Netflix making seemingly unpopular decisions with their business model, such as releasing an ad-supported multi-tier subscription plan and attempting to end password sharing, their original content has seen a bevy of major hits over the past year. Forbes reports that despite other services sporting big franchises with names like Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, etc., etc., Netflix has had a sneaky great 2022, with three of their best-performing shows in company history all being released this year.
The return of the little show that kind of started it all, Stranger Things, broke series and overall records for Netflix when it debuted its fourth season. The show’s use of Kate Bush’s Running Up That Hill even made the 1985 song a monster comeback as it topped the Billboard charts worldwide and began seeing a huge uptick in download numbers. Rian Johnson‘s Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery has been performing like gangbusters on Netflix since the film’s Christmas pre-game launch. According to new analytics, the comedic whodunit is the streaming platform’s sixth-biggest debut in Netflix history. Further details about Glass Onion reveal Netflix subscribers streamed the movie for 82.1 million hours in the first three days since the film’s December 23 release. While the hour count isn’t enough to crack Netflix’s Top 5, 82.1 million hours would have Mona Lisa smirking and then some.
Glass Onion is in good company on Netflix’s chart of most-watched films. In fifth place is Nora Fingscheidt’s The Unforgivable, starring Sandra Bullock and Viola Davis (85.86. million hours). The Russo Brothers’ film The Gray Man ranks fourth with 88.55 million hours viewed. Shawn Levy’s The Adam Project is in third place, starring Ryan Reynolds, Walker Scobell, and Mark Ruffalo, with 92.43 million hours.

Despite all the buzz surrounding Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, the film has failed to break into Netflix’s illustrious film club.
Rian Johnson’s sequel to his 2019 murder mystery film has proven to be a hit among audiences, with the film receiving mostly favourable reviews.
Glass Onion was released on Netflix on 23 December. It streamed 82.1 million hours in the first three days, the streaming service announced on Tuesday (27 December).
This figure makes Glass Onion the streaming giant’s sixth biggest film debut, narrowly missing out on a top five position.
The film follows behind Sandra Bullock’s 2021 film The Unforgivable (85.86 million hours) and The Gray Man – starring Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans – which streamed 88.55 million hours when it was released in July this year.

As expected, “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” secured the leading position on Netflix’s weekly movie rankings in its opening weekend on the streamer. A sequel to Rian Johnson’s 2019 whodunnit “Knives Out,” “Glass Onion” was watched for 82.1 million hours in the Dec. 19-25 viewing window, during which it was only available for the last three days. By Netflix’s estimation, dividing viewing hours by the film’s 2.3-hour runtime, this means 35 million households tuned in.
The film arrived on Netflix after a limited theatrical release that began on Nov. 23, exactly one month before its streaming debut. The “Knives Out” franchise marked a major investment for Netflix, which in 2021 paid 450 million for the rights to two sequels, plus another 40 million to produce “Glass Onion,” the first. Whether or not the company will get a solid return on its investment remains to be seen.

Saoirse Ronan was all set to appear in Greta Gerwig’s upcoming Barbie movie starring Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie.
Gerwig has twice directed Ronan in the critically lauded films, Lady Bird (2017) and Little Women (2019).
In a new interview with People, Ronan revealed that she was supposed to make a cameo appearance in the film but it didn’t pan out due to a scheduling conflict.
“I live in London and they were [filming] there,” the actor explained.
“There was a whole character I was going to play – another Barbie,” Ronan said. “I was gutted I couldn’t do it.”
Sadly, Ronan was busy filming The Outrun, The Unforgivable director Nora Fingscheidtan’s upcoming drama about a recovering alcoholic living on the Orkney Islands in Scotland.
Ronan added that she’s since texted Robbie and Gerwig asking if there is any chance she can still appear in Barbie in some capacity.

Domhnall Gleeson channels Hannibal Lecter in the first trailer for “The Patient,” the upcoming FX limited series co-starring Steve Carell.
Created by Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg, who previously worked together on the acclaimed FX drama “The Americans,” “The Patient” focuses on the relationship between Alexander Strauss (Carell), a well-regarded psychotherapist, and his new patient Sam Fortner (Gleeson). When Sam takes Strauss hostage, he reveals himself to be a serial killer, and asks the doctor to cure him of his murderous tendencies. As Strauss reluctantly begins treatment, the experience unearths demons and traumas of his own, blurring the line between the patient and therapist. The trailer begins with a normal therapy session between the two before fast-forwarding to the hostage situation, with Strauss trapped via chain in Sam’s house.
“Successful therapy requires a safe environment, without anything like fear hanging over every session,” Carell says in the trailer.

However, she couldn’t stop thinking about the project and went back to the studio with a fix: Reverse the roles and make the leading lady more heroic and bold, and infuse the leading man’s character with feminine sensitivities. It was a move Channing Tatum would welcome when joining the movie about a romance author and her cover model who set out on an adventure.
“There weren’t any obstacles for the female character. And the male character we’ve seen before,” Bullock tells The Hollywood Reporter. “I like that I’m not 25,” Bullock, 57, continues. “And I love that there’s a man in it willing to be...
