Emmy Award winner Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul) has re-teamed with Nobody writer Derek Kolstad (John Wick franchise) on a new action pic titled Normal, with Ben Wheatley set as director. WME Independent will launch sales at the upcoming European Film market.
The script, written by Kolstad, follows Ulysses (Odenkirk), who is thrust into the temporary role of the sheriff for the small sleepy town Normal after the previous one’s untimely death. When the town’s bank is robbed by an out-of-town couple, Ulysses arrives on the scene to find that the town is hiding much more sinister deep-seated secrets under its surface and everyone – from the bartender to the priest – is in on it. And now Ulysses, who’s up-till-now focused only on running away from the demons of his past, must uncover the full extent of this criminal conspiracy.

Kevin Hart is back in a brand new adventure with this second take at Die Hart. The new season finds Mr. Hart attempting to continue on his mission to certify his action star status. And yes, the new episodes feature some seriously clever bits of homage to all sorts of genres. Action, comedy, drama, and even a bit of horror. No, seriously, there’s some horror stuff in this. Die Hart is currently streaming on Roku, and features a terrific supporting cast that includes Nathalie Emmanuel, John Cena, Ben Schwartz, and Paula Pell.
It’s really terrific chatting with Kevin Hart. Especially because I’ve become quite a fan of this little endeavor of goofy charm. Die Hart is a funny and fast bit of comedy and carnage, and Mr. Hart brings a whole lot of goodness to it. During our chat, we talked about how amazing Ben Schwartz is – he really is.

Die Hart: The Movie is a comedy movie directed by Eric Appel
Kevin Hart pokes fun at his supporting role in action movies and signs up for an action actor’s school with John Travolta as his instructor.
Funny… but only just
And if we were worse people we’d say it’s almost close to a B-movie that doesn’t deserve its stars.
With John Travolta, Nathalie Emmanuel, Josh Hartnett and Jean Reno.
Movie Review
A film that looks promising but disappoints you very quickly.
It barely holds up for the first ten or fifteen minutes, when Hart is interviewed. Then, it becomes not much or even just nothing at all, an anecdotal film, video-club fodder in bygone times, one of those movies that no one had heard of and that were rented without thinking too much about it and from which little was expected anyway.
Other than someone learning what Chrome Keying is…...

The satirical action comedy follows Kevin Hart in his pursuit of a life-changing role.
Kevin Hart plays a fictionalised version of himself, as he sets out to pivot from being pigeonholed as a comedy wingman to being taken seriously as an action movie star. Hart attends “action hero school” run by Ron Wilcox, played by John Travolta, where he attempts to learn the ropes on how to become one of the industry’s most coveted action stars.
Kevin Hart and John Travolta are joined by Nathalie Emmanuel (Game of Thrones, the Fast & Furious franchise), Josh Hartnett (Wrath of Man, Paradise Lost), and Jean Reno (Call My Agent!, 22 Bullets). The movie is directed by Eric Appel (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) and written by Derek Kolstad.

"You're like a real life Rambo!" Amazon has revealed a brand new trailer for a repackaged and recut Quibi series titled Die Hart, which will be (re)released for streaming on Prime Video later in February. This was initially made as one of these dumb Quibi series, where you view short snippets at a time on the app, and the service failed pretty quickly because it was a bad idea all along. The footage has been edited into a movie version, which will be streaming only. It follows a fictionalized version of Kevin Hart as he tries to become an action movie star. He attends a school run by Ron Wilcox (played by Travolta), where he attempts to learn the ropes on how to become one of the industry's most coveted action stars. Ugh. Originally written for Bruce Willis but Willis didn't understand the concept of Quibi (phew!) and turned...

Once upon a time ago, you’ll recall a little platform called Quibi. Founded by Jeffrey Katzenberg, Quibi was a short-lived American short-form streaming platform that generated content for viewing on mobile devices. Essentially, if you ever thought, “oh man, the way things are moving, people might as well just make TikTok movies,” then Quibi has a similar idea of bite-sized narrative content. It didn’t work and failed in under a year, shuttering at the end of 2020.

February is the shortest month of the year but Prime Video is paying that no mind with its jam-packed list of new releases for February 2023.
This really is an uncommonly stuffed month on the Amazon streamer and it all starts with a handful of Amazon Originals. Amazon’s original offerings kick off with the release of Dave Franco-directed romcom Somebody I Used to Know on Feb. 10. That is followed by Carnival Row season 2 – a gritty fantasy crime drama is set in a world of steampunky fairies. The show stars Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevigne and this batch of episodes will be its swan song. Meanwhile The Consultant on Feb. 24 is a dark comedy workplace thriller starring Christoph Waltz.
The biggest hits this month, however, might just be some recent cinema faves. If February is for lovers, Amazon didn’t get the memo as there are quite a few horror movies of note here.

On the heels of his critically-acclaimed “‘Weird: The Al Yankovic Story,” filmmaker Eric Appel has been tapped as writer and director for a new Sony Pictures comedy.
This project has had an intriguing shelf life. It was originally developed as a script called “Oh Hell No,” set to star rapper Ice Cube and comedian Jack Black. In late 2021, Cube grabbed national headlines when he dropped out of the film weeks before shooting was set to commence in Hawaii. His exit was reportedly attributed to his refusal to receive a Covid-19 vaccine at the request of producers.
Black is still a producer on the revamped “Stepdude,” but does not currently have a deal to star. The premise of “Oh Hell No” saw two men close in age go to war after one develops a romantic relationship with the other’s mother. No updated plot was given for Appel’s pass, except...

Following last week’s premiere of his quasi-biopic comedy Weird: The Al Yankovic Story on Roku, director Eric Appel has found his follow-up film. He is set to direct and write the comedy Stepdude for Sony Pictures, with Matt Tolmach producing along Jack Black and Roz Music.
The plot is being kept under wraps. Insiders say studio execs view this as having big potential at the theatrical level, with plans to fast-track it now that Appel is on board.
Appel most recently directed Daniel Radcliffe in Roku’s Weird: The Weird Al Yankovich feature, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival to rave reviews. Appel was the director on Quibi’s action-comedy series Die Hart, starring Kevin Hart and John Travolta.
On the TV side, he beat out a strong field to direct the pilot of the Lord Miller live action/animation hybrid Fox series Son of Zorn,...

Charlie Collier, after more than two decades in broadcasting and cable TV, has jumped ship from the traditional television biz — betting that TV’s future is all about streaming.
As first reported by Variety, Collier is leaving his post as CEO of Fox Entertainment, departing from the Murdochs’ fiefdom to head up Roku Media, where he’ll oversee content and ad sales for the Roku Channel starting next month.
For Roku, recruiting the high-profile TV exec who brought such hits as “Mad Men,” “Breaking Bad” and “The Walking Dead” to the small screen can be viewed as a shift toward more strategic — rather than tactical — spending on original content. Not incidentally, Collier also is familiar with the content economics of the free-streaming space: Fox Corp. spent 440 million to buy Tubi in 2020, which has served as a monetization outlet for Fox TV programming.
The move signals that Roku plans to spend more on original content.

Quibi, the short-lived mobile-concentrated streaming service, may be gone, but one of its original shows had survived. The show is the action parody, Die Hart, by comedian and actor Kevin Hart. In this comedy, Hart plays himself where he wants to live out his fantasy of being an action hero and enlists the help of John Travolta to teach him the ways of being an action star.
The first season also featured appearances by Josh Hartnett and Nathalie Emmanuel of Game of Thrones and the Fast and Furious franchise. Variety now has the lowdown of new cast members joining for season 2 of the show. Another veteran of the Fast and Furious family, the brother of Dominic Toretto himself, John Cena, will be making an appearance for this season, as well as Sonic the Hedgehog voice actor Ben Schwartz and voice artist and comedic actress Paula Pell.

Streaming platform Roku has officially picked up its first Emmy Awards nominations.
The company’s free, ad-supported Roku Channel was recognized with two Emmy nods for rom-com movie “Zoey’s Extraordinary Christmas” — for television movie and choreography for scripted programming — while Bill Burr landed a nomination for actor in a short-form comedy or drama series for comedy anthology series “Immoral Compass.”
Roku picked up the streaming rights to “Zoey’s Extraordinary Christmas” from Lionsgate, after NBC canceled primetime musical comedy series “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” after two seasons. While both projects were rescues, the Roku Channel’s Emmy nominations are a feather in its cap as the company vies for attention and competes against larger streamers with multibillion-dollar budgets.

“Swimming with Sharks” has the makings of a breakout streaming series. There’s identifiable young stars in Kiernan Shipka and Finn Jones, and a strong performance from Diane Kruger. Then there is Donald Sutherland in what might be his most repulsive villain role yet: a Hollywood patriarch who delivers from his literal deathbed some of the show’s most jaw-dropping moments of sexual exploitation (and there are a lot).
Delivering the pulpy indulgence of “You,” the palace intrigue of “House of Cards,” and a dick-pics-per-episode ratio bested only by “Minx,” it would be right at home on many streamers. But — surprise! — when the show’s eight-episode first season drops Friday, it will be available exclusively on the Roku Channel, for free, to the 60 million people who use the company’s boxes, sticks, and smart TVs in any given month.

Daniel Radcliffe has been tapped to play musician “Weird Al” Yankovic in Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, a Roku Original biopic from Funny or Die and Tango that will be available for streaming exclusively on The Roku Channel.
Yankovic and Eric Appel penned the feature, with the latter Funny or Die alum set to direct, after helming a short film of the same name for the production company back in 2010. Production will kick off in Los Angeles early next month.
Known for pastiching and parodying the works of his musical contemporaries, Yankovic is the biggest-selling comedy recording artist of all time. A five-time Grammy winner, his 2014 release Mandatory Fun was the first comedy album in history to debut at #1 on Billboard’s Top 200. The M&a climate continues to be vibrant amid favorable economic conditions and a wave of private equity interest in media, entertainment and technology. In just the past few months, Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine and LeBron James’ SpringHill Co. have received injections of new capital at lofty, nine-figure valuations.
News of the Hart talks was first reported by Puck’s Matt Belloni.
Hart is known for being industrious and his two companies have both followed suit. Laugh Out Loud, founded in 2017, produces, develops and distributes digital, audio and experiential comedy content. The prolific and multifaceted shop puts out an array of on-demand fare and runs a 24-7 streaming channel that is available via major distribution hubs like Pluto, Tubi and Peacock.

Christmas is coming early for fans of NBC’s canceled musical comedy “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist.” Roku has confirmed that it has picked up a holiday-themed, feature-length film based on the Emmy-winning show to air exclusively on its ad-supported The Roku Channel in the U.S. later this year. One of the most unusual quirks of this year’s Emmy nominations was the fact that Quibi managed to land eight of them — quite a feat, given that the streamer doesn’t actually exist anymore.
Quibi shut down in December, less than a year after its much-heralded launch. The Jeffrey Katzenberg-Meg Whitman startup and its promise of delivering “quick bite” content to users exclusively on their phones became a bit of a punchline in the industry. But the programming itself was rather solid, attracting top Hollywood producers and stars. Clearly TV Academy voters found it Emmy-worthy: Last year, Quibi won two Emmys (for “#FreeRayshawn”).
This year’s three nominated Quibi shows — “Die Hart,” “Mapleworth Murders” and “Reno 911!” — live on via Roku, which acquired the Quibi programming slate earlier this year for its Roku Channel. Here’s the awkward thing: The Television Academy still lists the network for those shows as Quibi,...

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we take a serious look at “Saturday Night Live’s” 11 acting nominations.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! Live from New York, it’s Friday afternoon and time for us to type. We’ve spent a lot of time Slacking each other about the various Emmy categories, but I wanted to focus this week on one of the most recognized shows: “Saturday Night Live.” The long-running sketch comedy series grabbed 21 nominations, including a ridiculous 11 for its performers and hosts. As a result, it’s all but guaranteed to win in the Guest Actor in a Comedy category, where four of the five nominees stood on the Studio 8H stage this past season, as well as Guest Actress in a Comedy, where Maya Rudolph...

Roku is betting its fire-sale pickup of the shows from Quibi, Jeffrey Katzenberg’s short-lived, short-form startup, will continue to pay off for the streaming platform.
On Aug. 13, the company will premiere 23 new Roku Originals (each of them from Quibi’s library) exclusively on the Roku Channel to stream for free with ads. It’s the second tranche of Quibi shows coming to the Roku Channel, after Roku bowed 30 titles in May.
The new shows coming to the Roku Channel include “Mapleworth Murders,” a “Murder She Wrote” spoof that nabbed three 2021 Emmy acting nominations for Paula Pell, John Lutz and J.B. Smoove. Also on the slate are four previously unreleased Quibi titles: “Eye Candy” hosted by Josh Groban, a competition series in which contestants attempt to identify outrageous edible creations that look like everyday objects; cleaning competition “Squeaky Clean” hosted by Leslie Jordan; Season 2 of money-giveaway reality show “Thanks a...
