The headliner this year is the fair use of Mickey Mouse — at least, the Steamboat Willie version of the beloved character — as that copyright expiration has been anticipated for years. However, there’s much more than just Mickey entering the public domain in 2024.

Almost 30 years after first appearing as an animated television series, Gargoyles is taking flight once more, this time in live-action.
Two major names in the creature feature business, Gary Dauberman and James Wan’s Atomic Monster banner, known for their collaborations on the hit Annabelle horror movies, have teamed up to remake the 1990s cartoon as a live-action series for Disney+.
Dauberman will write, executive produce and showrun the series with Atomic Monster, the company run by Wan and Michael Clear, joining the executive producing ranks. The project is described as being in early development at Disney Branded Television.
Gargoyles was made by Walt Disney Television Animation and aired three seasons, from 1994 to 1997. The premise involved gargoyle statues moved from a castle in Scotland to modern-day New York. Once in the Big Apple, the statues awaken from a thousand-year-old spell and take on the mantle of protecting the city, becoming,...

Ideally timed to Disney’s centennial, a short film entitled “Once Upon a Studio” assembles 100 years’ worth of animated characters from the company’s vaults for a group photo outside Walt Disney Animation Studios headquarters in Burbank, Calif. That’s the building, shaped like Mickey Mouse’s conical blue hat from “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice,” where the walls are lined with images from a century’s worth of iconic toons.
Conceived and directed by Trent Correy and Dan Abraham, the project involves a live-action walkthrough of the place where the magic happens — that is, where much of the work on Disney’s animated features is done. But there’s an extra sprinkling of magic here, as cartoon characters leap out of their frames and wander the halls where they were originally drawn or rendered.

It’s that time of the year again: Disney synergy on “Dancing with the Stars.” The top 11 couples will perform to tunes from Disney films on Tuesday’s Disney100 Night. Not to be confused with regular Disney Night or Disney+ Night. Disney100 Night is special because it’s the 100th anniversary of Disney… but nothing’s really different.
But there is a more equitable distribution of dances this week. Gone are, like, six foxtrots or seven cha-chas. No dance style will be performed more than twice on Tuesday, which will also see the season debut of jazz, paso doble, Viennese waltz, waltz and contemporary.

Xochitl Gomez and Val Chmerkovskiy: paso doble (“Un Poco Loco” from “Coco”)
Alyson Hannigan and Sasha Farber: jazz (“Be Our Guest” from “Beauty and the Beast”)

Evan Peters, who starred as Quicksilver in Fox’s “X-Men” prequel series and earned acclaim playing Jeffrey Dahmer in Ryan Murphy’s blockbuster “Monster” Netflix miniseries, has joined the cast of Disney’s long-gestating “Tron: Ares,” an individual with knowledge told TheWrap on Wednesday.
Peters will star alongside Jared Leto in the sci-fi threequel helmed by Joachim Rønning, which will hopefully begin shooting in August in Vancouver. Emma Ludbrook, Jeffrey Springer and Leto are producing. Russell Allen is executive producing.
The Walt Disney Company has been trying to make a follow-up to “Tron: Legacy” for over a decade. The first “Tron,” which earned two Academy Award nominations — but none for its then-groundbreaking special effects — earned just $50 million worldwide on a $17 million budget. That was seen as a disappointment in 1982 but built enough of a cult audience for Disney to roll the dice in 2010 with the $170 million budgeted “Tron: Legacy.”

“The Hurt Unit” will follow a highly skilled team of trauma surgeons and nurses who race into the field to treat the patients who won’t make it to the hospital in time. Autumn typically signals the start of the back-to-school season, but in Paul Feig's latest film, this return contains more magic, monsters, and mystery than pens, pencils, and homework. With Netflix's "The School for Good and Evil," the filmmaker behind "Freaks and Geeks" and "Bridesmaids" tackles his biggest fantasy comedy since 2016's much-discussed "Ghostbusters" reboot as he adapts Soman Chainani's popular young adult novel series for the small screen.

If you told me that there was a famous actor who was secretly an all-powerful wizard, Nicolas Cage would be my first and only guess as to who you were referring to. This made him the perfect star for 2010's "The Sorcerer's Apprentice." In the film, Nicolas Cage is a wizard living in modern-day Manhattan who takes a reluctant physics student, played by Jay Baruchel, under his wing as his apprentice. The title of the film gets most of that across.
As he always does, Cage brought his signature manic movement and energy to the character. Co-star Jay Baruchel remarked in an interview that Cage "has such a unique, distinct presence."
As often happens when you bring such a passionate star into a film, many of Cage's suggestions as to how the character would look and operate made it to the final cut of the film.

Screenwriter Matt Lopez has signed with CAA for representation just ahead of the premiere of his adaptation of “Father of the Bride” for HBO Max. The new movie, starring Andy Garcia as the titular father, Gloria Estefan, Adria Arjona, and Isabela Merced, will debut on June 16, timed to Father’s Day Weekend.
Lopez also penned the script for another upcoming adaptation — this time, Walt Disney Studios’ “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day” movie, with 21 Laps and the Jim Henson Company producing. Like “Father of the Bride,” the new movie will reportedly center a Latino family’s story. In 2020, Netflix acquired the rights to his spec feature script “Wraith,” based on the novel “Cyberstorm” by Matthew Mather. Sebastian Hoffman is set to direct that project, which is produced by Emile Gladstone.

Nicolas Cage has had enough of the press taking shots at him for his era of straight-to-vod movies. The Oscar winner had a string of theatrical flops around 2014, including duds such as “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” and “Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance,” and so his career pivoted almost exclusively to VOD titles like “The Runner,” “Pay the Ghost,” “The Trust” and more. Anyone who claimed Cage didn’t care about his career during this era was dead wrong.
“People thought I didn’t care. I did. I was caring,” Cage recently told Rolling Stone. “I think that I did some of the best work of my life in that so-called ‘direct to video’ period. ‘Massive Talent’ was in that group. ‘Mandy’ was in that group. ‘Pig,’ ‘Bad Lieutenant: Port of New Orleans,’ ‘Joe,’ ‘Mom and Dad,’ ‘Color Out of Space’ — they were all in that group. ‘The Runner’ I thought was terrific.

Many of us were introduced to some of the great works of classical music by the Disney film "Fantasia," or if you're a little younger, "Fantasia 2000." The 1940 film (called "The Concert Feature" while it was being made) was a series of eight animated segments set to pieces of classical music. The entire performance is conducted by Leopold Stokowski, with music critic and composer Deems Taylor as the Master of Ceremonies stringing the performances together. Even if you've never seen either film, it's very likely that you've watched one segment. That's "The Sorcerer's Apprentice," in which Mickey Mouse acts as the apprentice to sorcerer Yen...

In the beginning, there was "The Sorcerer's Apprentice." Walt Disney wanted one last hurrah for Mickey Mouse, a chance to prove that he could compete with the likes of Donald and Goofy. For inspiration, he landed on a symphonic riff on a Goethe ballad by French composer Paul Dukas. But while the project was intended for the short format, it soon became prohibitively expensive. The only way for Disney and his staff to justify the cost would be to expand the short to film length. Disney considered his options.

Around 2014, after Nicolas Cage had a string of box office flops with the likes of “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” and “Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance,” the actor started becoming the face of straight-to-vod action movies. Those roles piled up in the dozens as reports surfaced that Cage blew his $150 million fortune, owed the IRS $6.3 million in property taxes and was taking every acting role he could in order to get out of debt. The actor recently clarified this period of his life in an interview with GQ magazine.
“I’ve got all these creditors and the IRS and I’m spending $20,000 a month trying to keep my mother out of a mental institution, and I can’t,” Cage said about his debts. “It was just all happening at once.”

The influence of the Greek “weird wave,” and to a lesser extent the moral mazes of Austria’s Michael Haneke, have been seeping into U.S. indie cinema for quite a while now, and Riley Stearns’ third feature, Dual, comfortably fits into the Sundance slot taken last year by Pascual Sisto’s bizarre dysfunctional family satire John And The Hole.
Stearns doesn’t quite nail the macabre mundanity of absurdist classics such as Yorgos Lanthimos’s The Lobster — in which the residents of a drab seaside spa hotel must find a soulmate within 45 days or be turned into an animal — but he gives it a good shot, drawing a surprisingly committed performance from Karen Gillan in the kind of role usually earmarked for Aubrey Plaza in her spiky Ingrid Goes West mode.
The opening sequence of Sundance Film Festival U.S. Dramatic Competition entry Dual sets the tone, albeit a little clumsily.

Marvel, Star Wars, everything in the Disney vault…it’s all great, but we know what you really want to see on Disney Plus – more Nicolas Cage movies! To date, the actor has only been represented on the Mouse House’s streaming service by the two National Treasure films, but as of yesterday, October 30th, his other effort for Disney was made available on D+. Namely, 2010’s The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.
While the National Treasure flicks were huge successes back in the 2000s and are still fondly remembered today, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice hasn’t really had the same kind of shelf life. But now that it’s on Disney Plus, it might be time to refamiliarize yourself with it or else give it a go and see what you missed.

Given the sheer volume of major properties at their disposal, it hardly came as a surprise when Disney dominated the annual list of the year’s highest-grossing movies in 2019. Between the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Star Wars, Walt Disney Animation, Pixar and the production line of live-action remakes based on the studio’s back catalogue, billions upon billions of dollars were virtually guaranteed.
The Mouse House did try to branch out over the last decade and establish some new franchises, but the results were less than stellar. A “Father of the Bride” film remake with a Cuban American twist is in development at Warner Bros, according to an individual with knowledge of the project.
Screenwriter Matt Lopez is penning the script for the romantic comedy. For the remake, Lopez will draw on his experience from attending Cuban weddings. Executives Jesse Ehrman and Paul Perez will oversee development of the project at the studio.
“Father of the Bride” was a remake of the 1950 original film which starred Spencer Tracy and Elizabeth Taylor. The 1991 version of the film starred Steve Martin as George Banks as a dotting father who is reluctant to let go of his daughter when he discovers that she is getting married. Diane Keaton also starred in the 1991 film as George’s wife Nina.
The 1991 “Father of the Bride” grossed $89 million domestically at the box office. A 1995 sequel followed and grossed $76 million domestically.

Warner Bros is putting the wheels in motion on new Father of the Bride movie, with Matt Lopez penning the script. This latest reboot will revolve around a Latinx family, a first for the franchise.
This marks the third retelling of the story that began with the Spencer Tracy original in 1950 and was most recently remade by Disney in 1991 starring Steve Martin. That film spawned a sequel in 1995.
The latest film will tell the story of a father coming to grips with his daughter’s upcoming wedding through the prism of multiple relationships within a big, sprawling Cuban-American family. It will be more of a rom-com than previous versions of film.
Sources say Lopez was inspired by his own cross-cultural nuptials and the many epic Cuban weddings he has attended, some of which he’s still recovering from.
Jesse Ehrman and Paul Perez will oversee for Warners.

Back in November of 2019 (which seems like a lifetime ago), Disney+ launched with what would become its premier title: The Mandalorian. Now here we are just under a year later and it’s finally time for the next installment of Disney+’s Star Wars journey.
The Mandalorian season 2 arrives on Oct. 30 and is the biggest ticket item on Disney+ this month and perhaps is the biggest ticket item in all the streaming world. Rest assured that the itty bitty Baby Yoda will be returning once again. And be sure to catch up all the other secrets the trailer holds here.
In addition to Mando, Disney+ is brining another major original series to its stream this month. The Right Stuff, based on on the 1979 book of the same name about the NASA space program, will be arriving on Oct. 9 and debuting new episodes throughout the month.

Following the massive success of Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl in 2003, for the next decade Disney repeatedly attempted to mine other recognizable properties in the hope that it would bring similar results. Captain Jack Sparrow may have headlined a multi-billion dollar series that’s yielded four sequels and counting, but the rest of the would-be franchise starters didn’t fare as well.
The studio tried to replicate the exact same formula in a much sandier setting with 2010’s Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, which still failed to turn a profit despite becoming the highest-grossing video game adaptation ever made when it released. In 2012 and 2013, the Mouse House also endured two of the biggest box office bombs in history thanks to John Carter and The Lone Ranger.
Another forgotten attempt to build a marketable blockbuster brand, though, was The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, which saw Nicolas Cage...
