Another “Gavin and Stacey” Christmas episode is officially happening.
James Corden and Ruth Jones, the creators and stars of the classic British sitcom, took to Instagram on Friday to share a photo of them holding the script for an episode titled “the finale.”
“Some news… It’s official!!!” Corden and Jones wrote. “We have finished writing the last ever episode of ‘Gavin and Stacey.’ See you on Christmas Day, BBC One. Love Ruth and James.”
Premiering in 2007, “Gavin and Stacey” follows the title characters, a boy from Essex and a girl from Wales (played by Mathew Horne and Joana Page), as well as Corden’s Smithy and Jones’ Nessa. As the show’s plot description reads, “Gavin and Stacey have been continuing their romance online and by telephone for the last six months. Now they want to be together, but will their friends and family let them?”

It’s been confirmed. Deadline’s scoop from earlier this year that another Gavin & Stacey Christmas special was in the works has been rubberstamped and it will be the smash comedy’s final ever.
Posting on Instagram in the past few minutes, co-creators James Corden and Ruth Jones wrote: “Some news… It’s official!!! We have finished writing the last ever episode of Gavin and Stacey. See you on Christmas Day, BBC One. Love Ruth and James.”
Deadline had revealed that the episode was in the works several weeks back, although multiple members of the cast quickly sought to downplay our story. Baby Cow, Corden’s Fulwell 73 and Ruth Jones’ Tidy Productions are behind the special.
Gavin & Stacey is doubtless one of the most beloved British sitcoms of all time and the 2019 Christmas special was the most-watched show in a decade at more than 18 million viewers.

The creator of Bluey has revealed he was inspired by a handful of other shows when drawing up plans for his TV canine phenomenon.
Joe Brumm recently spoke to Deadline about the future of the show, which was Disney+’s most-streamed title of 2023 with almost 44 billion minutes of the 145 available eps watched, according to Nielsen data, and was the U.S.’s second-most streamed title overall, behind only Suits. Last year, Bluey mania reached a new height in the U.S. when a giant inflatable Bluey led the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
This weekend, Brumm told The Guardian newspaper he was influenced by UK sitcom Gavin and Stacey, penned by James Corden and Ruth Jones.
Brum said: “Gavin and Stacey was influential in a big way. I loved how it genuinely crossed generations, like The Simpsons back in the day. I thought: ‘Why shouldn’t a kids’ show make parents laugh too?...

Sitcom Things You Should Have Done is heading to BBC Three, and here’s the trailer for the new show.
Sadly, new comedy on television is becoming rarer and rarer, as budgets tighten and production companies become ever more risk averse. Currently, Mrs Brown’s Boys and Not Going Out stand as the only two studio audience sitcoms still on the air, and even then, Not Going Out has not yet officially been recommissioned.
BBC Three has long been a champion of new comedy, from Sean Lock’s wonderful 15 Storeys High to Gavin And Stacey, Him & Her and Back To Life.
Now, it is home to new sitcom Things You Should Have Done. According to the BBC Media Centre, the synopsis reads as follows:
Self-confessed stay-at-home-daughter, Chi (Lucia Keskin), is suddenly forced to fend for herself when her parents die. Chi will inherit the house on condition she completes...

Exclusive: Beloved BBC sitcom Gavin & Stacey is set to return for another bite at the Christmas cherry.
Deadline understands the sitcom from James Corden and Ruth Jones will film a new episode over the summer with a view to airing at Christmas time this year, five years on from the previous ratings-topping special.
We are told the special is in development/pre-production and cameras will roll in a few months time on the show, which is produced by Steve Coogan’s Baby Cow, Jones’ Tidy Productions and Fulwell 73, which is co-owned by Corden.
Gavin & Stacey is doubtless one of the most beloved British sitcoms of all time and the 2019 Christmas special was the most-watched show in a decade at more than 18 million viewers.
Mild spoiler: It ended with a cliffhanger, with Nessa (Jones) proposing to the ever-cheeky but loveable Smithy (Corden). That cliffhanger has led to undimmed chatter...

James Corden has given more insight into how Tom Cruise persuaded him to join him in a fighter jet for a “The Late Late Show” sketch.
“A few days before [the flight] I had a genuine worry,” he said during a Q&a session at the Royal Television Society conference in Cambridge, U.K. on Thursday afternoon. “I ended up going, like, ‘He’s an actor, he’s Not a pilot.’ Like, respectfully, it’s just the two of us in an airplane. If something happens then we die.”
“And worse than my own death is my children growing up and people going ‘Their dad killed Tom Cruise,’” he added.
Corden said that he tried to back out of the stunt when Cruise called him and said: “James, your life is more valuable than mine. You’re not in danger.”
In a wide-ranging chat, Corden also discussed his strategy when he first...

For a solid decade, the U.K. contributed some of the most iconic floppy-haired lotharios, airport dashes and front-door confessions in romcom history. Films such as “Four Weddings and a Funeral” (1994), “Notting Hill” (1999) and “Love Actually” (2003) basically invented such hallmarks of the genre.
But in the last decade, the global-facing British romcom has all but disappeared from cinemas. Richard Curtis, the brains behind the aforementioned hits as well as the “Bridget Jones” adaptations, says the heavy lifting keeping romcoms alive has largely been carried out in the television ranks. The writer cites examples such as the BBC’s “Gavin & Stacey” and “Fleabag” and Channel 4’s “Catastrophe” as “blazing examples.”
“Unexpectedly to me, I would say that trying to write vaguely autobiographical films with jokes in them about how complicated love is, has probably happened more on telly than in cinema,” Curtis tells Variety.

The Late Late Show with James Corden is coming to an end this year – and its replacement has reportedly been decided.
In April 2022, the British comic actor announced that he would be stepping down from hosting the US late night show in 2023 after eight years.
Rather than replacing Corden with a new presenter (the previous host was Craig Ferguson), it has now been reported that a different show will take the time slot.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Late Late Show will be replaced with a reboot of panel show @midnight. The Emmy-winning comedy game show originally aired on Comedy Central from 2013 from 2017 and saw comedians being asked questions about the internet.
Stephen Colbert is reportedly on board as an executive producer of the revival, although original host Chris Hardwick is said to not be returning.
The Independent has contacted CBS for comment.

Long-running soap opera “EastEnders” and reality sensation “The Traitors” were the most streamed shows on BBC streamer iPlayer during the holiday period.
During the two-week period from Dec. 20 to Jan. 2, “EastEnders” pulled in 23.7 million streams, while the Studio Lambert-produced “The Traitors” drew 12.4 million to iPlayer. Next up was children’s program “Hey Duggee” with 10.2 million, fantasy drama “His Dark Materials” with 8.2 million and children’s show “Bluey” with 6.2 million.
The numbers for “The Traitors,” in particular, are impressive given the show — which is based on a Dutch format from broadcaster Rtl — wrapped its linear broadcast only on Dec. 22, meaning a substantial audience caught up with the series as a boxset on iPlayer. Hosted by Claudia Winkleman, the “Mafia”-style reality show, in which a group of “faithful” contestants have to find the “traitors” in their midst who are quietly killing them off, was one of Britain’s most talked-about programs of the year.

James Corden has opened up about the moment he decided to quit as the host of popular US talk show The Late Late Show.
The former Gavin & Stacey star announced earlier this year that he would be stepping down from the role in 2023.
In a new interview with The Times, Corden addressed the decision, which he said was made in order to spend more time with his wife, Julia, and his three children.

Talk show host James Corden said that his working class upbringing meant he had to “bully” his way to success.
‘The Late Late Show’ host, who shares three children with wife Julia Carey and has an estimated net worth of 65 million pounds, believes that “opportunity” is non-existent for people from humble beginnings, despite them having talent in abundance, reports femalefirst.co.uk.
Corden said on ‘This Cultural Life’ show on BBC Radio 4: “If you’re from a working-class environment, you’re not bred for success. The talent is everywhere, and opportunity isn’t.”
“I didn’t realise until I met my wife that she did, I think, 13 GCSEs and I did six, and the most you could do at my school was seven.
“You’re kind of capped. You’re not really told that these things are possible. No one’s going to wait to invite you to the table.

Baby Cow are the production company behind some of the U.K.’s best-loved comedy shows, including “Gavin and Stacey” with James Corden and Ruth Jones, Julian Barratt and Noel Fielding’s “The Mighty Boosh” and “This Time With Alan Partridge” starring Steve Coogan as the cringe-worthy fictional television host.

Steve Coogan’s production company Baby Cow has snapped up a new series from “Stath Lets Flats” star Katy Wix and Adam Drake (“The Chosen”) called “Fat Camp,” Variety can exclusively reveal.

It is the first time Corden has brought “The Late Late Show” to British shores since 2019 and it will also be the last time, with the host due to step down from the gig next spring.

As the days grow shorter and families hunker down cozily in front of the TV, British holiday programming has grown into a dependable export around the world, thanks to the success of Christmas specials for shows like “The Office” and “Gavin & Stacey.”
“Demand for British content is higher than ever across the board,” says Louise McNab, director of content sales at BBC Studios, the commercial arm of the U.K. public broadcaster. “International audiences appreciate the ambition and creativity of British shows, as well as the level of authorship.”
Sally Habbershaw, executive VP for the Americas at All3Media, likens holiday specials for top offerings like “All Creatures Great and Small” and “The Larkins” to “a cup of warm tea and a blanket.”
“You snuggle and enjoy them,” says the executive, who notes that holidays “ideally represent some form of nostalgia and security.”

A long time ago, Meat Loaf would do anything to get his idea for a relationship game show off the ground, but now it’s finally happening.
The iconic rock star is set to executive produce a show called “I’d Do Anything for Love…But I Won’t Do That,” which is based on his 1993 hit ballad of the same name and is currently being shopped around to networks in the U.S., the U.K. and Australia.
During the ITV Studios Formats Festival, Meat Loaf appeared briefly via video to pitch the wacky format as part relationship show, part rock concert, and to reveal jokingly that the concept behind it even pre-dates the song.
“27 and a half years ago, I had an idea for a game show called ‘I Would Do Anything for Love…But I Won’t Do That.’ Now this game show was a relationship competition with a rock concert,...

The BAFTA TV Awards and TV Craft Awards emerged from their coronavirus slumber today, as nominations were unveiled for the delayed events, which will take place virtually on July 31 and July 17 respectively.
As usual with award nominations, the list of those recognized provoked a number of talking points, as well the traditional celebrations from those named on the shortlist. Let’s walk through some of the biggest themes.
The snubs
There were a couple of notable absentees from the nominations list, not least James Corden and Ruth Jones’ BBC Christmas Day comedy Gavin & Stacey. It was the highest-rated show on British TV in a decade, but there was no place for it in the best comedy category, although it did feature among the must-see moment contenders, which is voted on by the public.

The BBC license fee is set to rise again during one of the stormiest chapters in the public broadcaster’s history.
The U.K. government confirmed today that from April 1, the annual television license fee – which is used to fund BBC content across television, radio and catch-up services – will rise from £154.50 ($201.03) to £157.50 ($204.93).
The new fee amounts to £3.02 ($3.93) a week, or £13.13 ($17.08) a month, for which the BBC provides nine national TV channels as well as regional programming, 10 national radio stations, 40 local radio stations, radio app BBC Sounds and catch-up service BBC iPlayer.
The price hike is not a surprise, as the government announced in 2016 that the license fee would rise in line with inflation for five years from April 2017. However, the timing of this year’s price increase comes at a particularly chaotic period for the BBC, with Prime Minister Boris Johnson vowing to shake up the funding model for the...

James Corden and Ruth Jones’ comedy Gavin & Stacey was the most-streamed show of the period with nearly 4.6M requests, while A Christmas Carol managed 1.6M views. The first installment of Dracula generated 925,000 streams.
Elsewhere, BBC One’s long-running soap opera EastEnders dominated, and the Christmas special of Neal Street Productions drama Call The Midwife performed well with 1.8M streams.

In this week’s International TV Newswire, Variety looks at what Netflix overseas rankings say about its business model, a BBC iPlayer smash hit, Viacom’s latest production as it swells Spanish-language scripted titles at Miami-based Viacom Intl. Studios, a Netflix Egyptian puppet show, and HBO Latin America’ first fantasy suspense series in Brazil:
Netflix: Rankings Suggest Early Successes of International Business Model
“Extremely proud of our originals around the world…proof that great stories can come from anywhere and be loved everywhere.” Netflix tweeted Dec. 30 as, for the first time, it unveiled its most-watched titles in major markets worldwide. With slow news-flow throughout the week, it remains its major talking point. There were surprises. How come “Dark” Season 2 didn’t make the Top 10 most-watched series in Germany? More to the point, however, the ranking offer the first chance ever, to test what has become Netflix’s main gambit as...

The BBC pulled off something pretty remarkable on Christmas Day. In an age where traditional television viewing has been blown apart by streaming, the British broadcaster aired the UK’s most-watched TV show since 2010.
For this, it can thank James Corden and his writing partner Ruth Jones, who revived their smash hit comedy Gavin & Stacey after nine years to huge success over the festive season.
Some 11.5M people watched Gavin & Stacey go out live on BBC One, and with a week’s worth of catchup viewing, its audience has grown to a whopping 17.1M viewers, according to the BBC.
This makes it the biggest non-sport show on British television since the finale of Simon Cowell’s talent contest The X Factor in December 2010, which was watched by 17.7M viewers.
The biggest television event of the decade was the closing ceremony for the 2012 Olympics, which was broadcast live from London...

The BBC has defended the decision to feature The Pogues’ Christmas song Fairytale Of New York in its festive smash-hit Gavin & Stacey — complete with homophobic slur.
The comedy show, created by James Corden and Ruth Jones, was watched by an audience of 11.5M in the UK on Christmas Day, but some viewers complained about the inclusion of the song on Twitter.
Jones’ character Nessa Jenkins and Uncle Bryn, played by Rob Brydon, sing The Pogues’ tune in a pub, and Brydon’s character can clearly be heard repeating the original lyrics: “You scumbag, you maggot, you cheap lousy f****t.”
The song receives wide radio play in the UK over the festive season, including on the BBC, but its inclusion in Gavin & Stacey has reignited the debate about whether the lyric is appropriate 32 years after the song was originally written.

The return of “Gavin and Stacey” after nearly 10 years was a big hit on Christmas Day for the BBC, but it also drew some blowback from U.K. viewers over the use of a homophobic slur in a song lyric.
The romantic comedy drew the Beeb’s biggest audience for a Christmas Day program since 2008 with 11.6 million viewers. The hourlong special also gave the BBC its biggest audience share in the 16-34 demo of the year. Viewership peaked at 12.3 million.
But the special also generated some anger among viewers who were expressed dismay at the use of the f-word homophobic slur in the performance of the Pogues’ Christmas chestnut “Fairytale of New York.” The sardonic song that dates to 1987 has for decades been one of the most popular Christmas tunes in the U.K.

Like all the best comedies, Gavin & Stacey became a cultural touchstone in Britain after it launched in 2007.
There are easy ways to measure this, like the hatful of awards it took home, and the step ladder it provided creator James Corden on his way to stardom in the U.S. But there are also the intangible things that swirl around great comedies, like the catchphrases that infiltrate everyday conversation, or the memes that flood your timeline.
Either way, what started as a simple show about a blind date that brings together people from two bewilderingly different backgrounds, has grown into a cherished landmark in UK television history.
It was why, even 12 years on, Corden and Gavin & Stacey‘s co-writer Ruth Jones were still regularly asked if they would ever return to the split worlds of Barry Island and Billericay they created for BBC Three. They found many ways to say “no” — until May 2019 that was,...
