After voicing the leads in The Lego Movie franchise, The Super Mario Bros. Movie and now The Garfield Movie, Chris Pratt has established himself as a go-to voice for iconic animated characters. But after doing these multiple roles, how does he make each voice unique?
At the Los Angeles premiere of Garfield on Sunday, Pratt walked The Hollywood Reporter through each of the different voices, noting that as Emmet in The Lego Movie, he “aimed at something that was different than myself — it was kind of inspired a lot by Bill Hader’s voice and his character in Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs” and for Mario, “you had to find some version that was different than myself but not hardcore Mario from the games because that would grow a little tiresome, I think.”

Universal Pictures will release DreamWorks Animation’s Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie on September 26, 2025, the studio said Thursday. Universal already had the release date on hold for an untitled Dwa movie.
Late September is a prime time to launch family friendly animated pics, going back to Open Season and Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, among others, including DreamWorks Animation’s own Abominable.
Last year per Nielsen, the Gabby’s Dollhouse Netflix series was the sixth most-viewed streaming original series. The streamer has upped its order to 100 total episodes, with the 10th season to debut on Netflix later this year. The series is also in the top 10 in TV in 57 countries and has become a top 3 preschool brand in the U.S. across publishing, home, apparel and more, with a YouTube channel visited by millions weekly. Gabby’s Dollhouse continues to expand through Universal Destinations & Experiences theme parks, global fan experiences, live events and more.

Transformers One, is going now on Sept. 20 instead of Sept. 13.
The move gets Transformers One further away from Beetlejuice Beetlejuice which is going to eat up the September box office. However, already on this weekend is DreamWorks Animation/Universal’s Wild Robot. Two big animated movies are certainly not going to live on the same weekend.
The release date change also comes in the wake of the great reception that Transformers One received out of CinemaCon last week. Late September has been a rich bed for family animated movies including Hotel Transylvania 2 ($48.2M opening), Hotel Transylvania ($42.5M opening) and Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs ($34M opening).
Transformers One is among one of Paramount’s highest tested movies in the studio’s history.

When Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse voice actors Hailee Steinfeld, Daniel Kaluuya and Shameik Moore took the stage to present best screenplay at the Golden Globes earlier this month, the trio claimed their intro had been written by studio executives.
But, instead, it was Spider-Verse writers Phil Lord and Chris Miller who crafted the memorably stilted dialogue, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
“We were really happy that they wanted to have Hailee, Shameik and Daniel present and present a prestigious award,” Lord tells The Hollywood Reporter. “I think it’s a nice acknowledgment that the cast of our movie is full of Oscar nominees. Hailee is an Oscar nominee and an Academy member. Kaluuya is an [Oscar] winner. And we wanted to make sure they looked great. It’s a fun show, but you want to make sure you don’t go up there and whiff on a bit. So I...

We’re only a handful of days into the New Year, but we’re already receiving news of what movies and TV shows will leave Netflix UK in February 2024.
In case you missed it, we’re also keeping track of all of the movies and TV shows leaving Netflix UK in January 2024. If you’re looking for the US removals list, you can find all the departures for those in our February list here.
As a reminder, we typically get word of Netflix removals around 30 days before they’re due to happen. Netflix removes titles because much of its library consists of licensed titles. These licensed titles are essentially rented to Netflix for a fixed period of time, and when that time is up, they’re removed from the platform.

Pic is an adaptation of Peter Brown’s award-winning, #1 New York Times bestseller, The Wild Robot. The Wild Robot is directed by three-time Oscar nominee Chris Sanders—the writer-director of DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon, The Croods, and Disney’s Lilo & Stitch—and is produced by Jeff Hermann.

Among other reasons to bemoan the decline of traditional animation in the 21st century is the subsequent rise of the notion that the goal of animation should be to imitate real life as closely as possible. We saw this attitude manifest itself in mainstream computer animation throughout the 2000s and 2010s, which emphasized photorealism over stylization. But while the results were undeniably gorgeous at times, this mindset was inherently limiting. Why restrict yourself to reality when your imagination need not know any boundaries in animation?
Thank goodness for "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse." The 2018 superhero blockbuster not only mixed and matched animation techniques to create a heightened universe that could've come straight from the pages of an actual comic book, it also proved there was an audience hungry for animated films that eschewed the typical look popularized by Disney, Pixar, and the like. With the sequel "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse," the...

It’s the last weekend of a September chock-full of sequels, a few doing better than others. Sure enough, this weekend adds two more, but also a rare original science fiction film. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
The last few weekends have been so bad at the box office it may point toward audiences being ready for new and original movies. That’s certainly the case with 20th Century Studios’ “The Creator,” a new original science fiction movie from “Rogue One” and “Godzilla” director Gareth Edwards. It stars John David Washington from “Tenet” as a soldier in the war between humans and robots, who travels to Asia to find his missing wife Maya (Gemma Chan), only to be roped into a mission where he must find and kill a synthetic child (Madeleine Yuna Voyles), that could win the war for the robots.

Max, formerly known as HBO Max, has rolled out its first Top 10 lists in an effort to increase engagement with its best films and series.
Atop the inaugural podium for series are “Hard Knocks” (NFL training camp with the New York Jets), “And Just Like That…,” and “Winning Time,” a series about the Los Angeles Lakers of the ’80s.
Leading movies are DC disappointment “The Flash,” Bishop Sycamore high-school football documentary “Bs High,” and 2015 Will Ferrell/Kevin Hart prison comedy “Get Hard.”
It measures only those series that released a new episode on the platform within the last six weeks period and movies that debuted within the last eight weeks. Those are the windows when hits usually happen; you’ll see movies a heck of a lot older then “Get Hard” on Max’s top 10. Linear tune-in via HBO or the Discovery cable channels does not count toward Max’s Top 10.

From all the summer sensations to food weather, carnival fun and, of course, the lack of school, the streamer’s film slate will update with some appropriate flicks like “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2,” “Eat Pray Love,” “Despicable Me” and “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” respectively.
If you’re one of those who senses the change in the air as soon as the salty summer heat gives way to crisp fall fog, “Heartstopper” Season 2, complete with its cartoon drawings of leaves, waits for you starting August 3. “The Lincoln Lawyer: Season 2 Part 2” concludes the two-part followup to the legal drama starring Manuel Garcia-Rulfo. “Heart of Stone,” a big tentpole film starring Gal Gadot and Jamie Dornan, promises action-lovers a good time.
For those who didn’t get enough of the Depp v.

Summer isn’t over yet but HBO and its streaming arm Max are already moving on to fall. With its list of new releases for August 2023, Max is focusing on football! The American kind, mind you, not the actually footy kind.
August 2023 sees the release of two major football documentaries on HBO and Max. The first is the premiere of Hard Knocks on Aug. 10. The new season of long-running NFL training camp docuseries will center on the New York Jets, new employers of legendary quarterback Aaron Rodgers. On Aug. 23, Max will air the aptly named Bs High. The doc tells the stranger-than-fiction story of high school football team Bishop Sycamore, which pulled off one of the more notable sports scams you’re likely to ever hear about.
Not of the football variety but in keeping with the North American sports theme will be season 2 of Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty on Aug.

With its list of new releases for August 2023, Netflix is giving the anime world another shot.
No, we’re not talking about the streamer’s usual anime offerings – which are present this month in the form of Ragnarok season 3 (Aug. 24) and other titles – we’re talking about Netflix’s attempt to make live-action anime adaptations a thing. Following the relative failure of its Cowboy Bebop remake, Netflix is giving it another go, this time with arguably an even bigger anime classic. One Piece will premiere on Aug. 31. Telling the story of beloved straw hat wearing pirate Monkey D. Luffy, this adaptation will attempt to do original creator Eiichiro Oda and his many fans proud.

The directing, writing, and producing duo of Phil Lord & Chris Miller are behind some of the most imaginative and innovative movies of the 21st century. "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" injected some zany life into a classic children's book. "21 Jump Street" offered a hilariously clever, meta take on the Hollywood trend of old TV shows being turned into big screen movies for modern audiences. "The Lego Movie" shocked audiences and critics alike by being a genuinely entertaining adventure movie inspired by crass commercialism. And most recently, "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" blew live-action superhero movies out of the water with a stunning animated comic book story packed with mesmerizing artistry and groundbreaking multiverse mayhem.
Along with all the greatness that Lord & Miller bring to their movies, they're also a couple of rascals. Their films are packed with background gags that you likely won't even notice until you've seen the...

In late 2018, “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” quietly debuted. It featured a different version of the Spider-Man character, Miles Morales (Shameik Moore), a New York City whiz kid whose Spider-Man died tragically, forcing him to step into the iconic role (with some help from some other Spider-People from different dimensions). And it was rendered in an aggressively comic book-y style – this style was unlike anything that audiences had seen before and effectively bumped out the parameters of what we think of as Western animation.
It took chances in both the medium and the message. It made an impressive $384 million worldwide against a budget of $90 million. And it was awarded an Oscar for Best Animated Feature a few months later, marking the first non-Disney or Pixar movie that had been honored since Gore Verbinski’s “Rango.”

Sony Animation’s “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” is off and swinging at the box office, grossing a massive $17.4 million from 3,500 theaters.
That total is well above the $3.5 million that this sequel’s 2018 Oscar-winning predecessor “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” earned from Thursday previews en route to a mid-December $35 million opening. “Across the Spider-Verse” was projected to earn more than double that with tracking at an $80 million-plus launch, with rival distributors projecting an opening of over $90 million.
With this sky-high preview result, the second-biggest ever for an animated film behind “Incredibles 2” ($18.5 million toward a $183 million opening weekend) in 2018, Sony should be looking at a $100 million-plus opening, possibly above $125 million considering the strong reviews, likely-to-be-strong buzz and goodwill from the previous Mile Morales flick.
Yes, it’s an unusually long animated film, running 140 minutes, but extended runtimes aren’t generally an issue for films like “Avengers: Endgame,” “Avatar: The Way of Water...

The hype train for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was chugging along after the incredibly positive reception of the first movie. In fact, people were already saying it was better than its predecessor, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The continued adventures of Miles Morales’ journey into the multiverse promised an even crazier ride, with a newer villain, The Spot, as well as additional variations of Spider-Man from other universes than we’ve already seen. The first film’s success may have even inspired the direction in which Spider-Man: No Way Home decided to take.
According to Deadline, the Thursday previews for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which sees the return of Shameik Moore and Hailee Steinfeld in the roles of Miles and Gwen, brought in a whopping $16 million. This makes it the second-best preview night for an animated film ever. The best preview night belongs to another superhero-themed film with Disney/Pixar’s Incredibles 2,...

In 2023, the names "Lord & Miller" are synonymous with impressive, hilarious, successful projects. Whether it's writing, directing, or producing, the collaborative team of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller is involved in some of the biggest releases of the last decade, across a variety of different mediums. There are animated features like "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs," "The Mitchells vs. The Machines," and the "Spider-Verse" franchise, adult comedies like "21 Jump Street," "The Afterparty," and "Cocaine Bear," and plenty of other hits like "Unikitty!" and "The Lego Movie" entries. At this point, having the duo involved in any capacity is a sign of quality, but 20 years ago, they put out what would become one of the biggest animated cult hits on TV.

It was confirmed a little over a month ago that Scarlet Spider would be appearing in "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse," but his voice had been kept a secret until now. The character was first introduced in 1975 but was prominently featured during the Clone Saga of Spider-Man comics in the mid-1990s. This might sound radical on paper but received mixed-results in execution. The clone of Peter Parker went by the name Ben Reilly, donning a shredded Spidey hoodie over his super-suit while on the case.
As if Ben couldn't get any more painfully '90s, he also bleached his hair and had plenty of gnar-bro fashion accessories to try and capture the look of the time. Unfortunately, the storyline led to the reveal that Ben Reilly was the "original" Peter Parker, and I'm sure you can guess how fans reacted to the news. Spoiler Alert: they hated it. To be fair,...

There isn't a superhero who's captured the hearts and aspirations of comic book readers more fervently than Stan Lee and Steve Ditko's Spider-Man. Ever since the character's introduction 61 years ago in the fifteenth issue of Marvel Comics' "Amazing Fantasy," the web-slinger has hooked 'em young with the universal origin story of Peter Parker, a nerdy teenager transformed by a radioactive arachnid (and the preventable murder of his Uncle Ben) into a quip-happy, crime-fighting dynamo. Every kid can relate to Parker's journey, and, as we grow older, our inner-child's fondness for the wall-crawler only deepens.
Though Spider-Man belongs to all of us, the character's massive popularity left open the possibility of an iteration that directly appealed to non-white fans. Finally, in 2011 (40 years after DC introduced the Black character John Stewart as a new member of the Green Lantern Corps), Brian Michael Bendis and Sara Pichelli thrust Miles Morales, a...

We're a little over a week out from the release of "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" — the highly-anticipated sequel to the 2018 Oscar-winning movie — and the first reactions to the film have arrived on social media. And according to critics who were lucky enough to catch an early screening, "Across the Spider-Verse" is "terrific," an "incredible accomplishment," and the "ultimate Spider-Man experience." As you might've expected, everyone is going ga-ga over the work put into the animation, noting how it's "impossible to see it all [and] experience it all in one sitting."
Collider's Steven Weintraub echoed that with his reaction: "Absolutely loved ['Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.'] Wanted to push pause about a hundred times to study the incredible artistry on display. Cannot recommend this film enough and already looking forward to seeing it again." Characters being highlighted include "Get Out" star Daniel Kaluuya's Hobart "Hobie" Brown/Spider-Punk who uses a guitar as a weapon,...

As befitting its status as one of the world’s biggest companies, every now and then Amazon likes to take a big swing with its Prime Video originals. With its list of new releases for April 2023, the streamer is taking one of its biggest swings yet.
Though it’s not quite as vast or expensive as fellow Prime Video series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Citadel (premiering April 28) is a massive, massive undertaking. Starring Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra Jonas, this spy series is described as “an expansive and groundbreaking global event comprising a mothership series and several local language satellite series.” This means that the Russo Brothers-produced project will eventually feature several spinoffs in multiple countries and languages around the world. Neat-o!

When I was a kid in the late 1980s, the world was very different. We didn’t have the internet, we didn’t have mobile phones, we didn’t have thousands of channels to surf and our computer game choices were limited, even more so given their expense. However, there was one option that many kids of that age in the UK had in common: the fantastic, immersive books Fighting Fantasy by Ian Livingstone and Steve Jackson that allowed you to make decisions and choose your adventure. They were the best thing since sliced bread, frankly, but we mention their existence here as Livingstone and Jackson were also central in bringing Dungeons and Dragons to the UK in the late 1970s which, in turn, has led us to 2023 and the latest attempt to get the famed game to the big screen.

Prime Video is hoping to launch its own extended franchise universe in April with the premiere of international spy series “Citadel” from the minds of the Russo Brothers. The show stars Richard Madden, Priyanka Chopra, and Stanley Tucci, and is intended to be the first block of an interconnected story with different spinoffs in countries and regions around the world. The first version will begin streaming on April 28. In the show, the world is in the grips of Manticore, a criminal organization, and several former spies are recruited to restore order despite having their memories erased.

Ever since launching his career with "Saturday Night Live," Andy Samberg has lent his voice to a variety of projects, from selling sardines as Baby Brent in "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" to hanging out with monsters as Johnny in the "Hotel Transylvania" franchise. But that's family friendly fare. More recently, Samberg has also dabbled in animated roles geared towards adults, such as playing a werewolf version of Benedict Arnold in "America: The Motion Picture." Now, he's starring in his own animated adult comedy series.
"Digman!" premieres on Comedy Central starting on March 22, 2023 (watch the trailer here), with Samberg playing a washed up archaeologist adventurer named Rip Digman. Set in a universe where archaeologists are considered major celebrities, it should come as no surprise that the Digman character takes some cues from Indiana Jones. In fact, he might take even more inspiration from Nicolas Cage's character Benjamin Gates in "National Treasure.

Detroit-manufactured Bruce Campbell is a cult legend who sawed his way into every genre. Evil Dead Rise, the fifth installment of the franchise most associated with the actor, opens a new book on April 21, and it will be the first not to lead with his chin. He isn’t taunting the sacred geometry of the “Necronomicon Ex-Mortis,” Campbell was busy. He is always busy. He has authored novels, comic books, and screenplays, and has directed productions on big screens and small. Campbell is the star attraction of several franchise fandoms, beloved at the Comic-Con circuit and, believe it or else, crooned Duran Duran’s “Hungry Like the Wolf” for an Old Spice commercial, besides hosting the short-lived Ripley’s Believe It or Not.

It’s safe to say that since Disney bought the rights to Star Wars from Lucasfilm, the road toward producing a series of Star Wars films that would appeal to generations old and young has been bumpy. Tales of behind-the-scenes turmoil plagued Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, but the most infamous project remains Lord and Miller’s Solo. The film, which was to be a Han Solo origin tale, was to be directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, two talented directors famed for their 21 Jump Street reboots and their creative animated films like Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and The Lego Movie. Lifelong Star Wars fans, they seemed like the ideal choices to helm the film, but the two were shockingly fired from the movie after four and a half months of shooting.
