Marvin Miller: Michael Anthony

Quotes

  • Michael Anthony : [Anthony enters the study to find Tipton, seated in a high backed chair at his desk, reading a newspaper, the banner headline of which reads 'Fight Against Inflation.' Only Tipton's right hand is visible to the viewers]  You sent for me, sir?

John Beresford Tipton : Mike, do you remember when a loaf of bread costs five cents?

Michael Anthony : I'm afraid I do, sir. Now it's five times as much. Oh, the cost of living.

John Beresford Tipton : The cost of living. It's interesting, isn't it, that we talk so much about the cost of living and so little about the value of life.

Michael Anthony : I suppose most of us take it for granted.

John Beresford Tipton : There are some men who can't do that. Every day, they realize the great value of life and fight for it.

[Tipton hands an envelope to Anthony]

John Beresford Tipton : Our next millionaire.

[Anthony accepts the envelope, smiles, and bows]

  • Michael Anthony : [to the viewers]  My name is Michael Anthony and until his death, I was Executive Secretary to John Beresford Tipton, a multibillionaire, who had the strange hobby of giving away $1,000,000. One million dollars, tax-free, to an individual who had never met him, who indeed had never heard of him. This is Silverstone, John Beresford Tipton's 60,000-acre estate. Mr. Tipton was a man of amazingly wide interests - so wide that one never knew what to expect when called into his presence.

  • Michael Anthony : [to the viewers]  Dr. Joseph Frye was a young, small town doctor who was just beginning to establish a practice. Six days a week, from 6:00 in the morning till after dark, he and his wife, Julie, worked in the office of their rented house on Third Street. Sometimes it was 9:00 before the last patient was gone, and even then, there might be latecomers.

  • Michael Anthony : [Anthony knocks on he front door of the Frye's house. Julie answers]  Good evening. Is the doctor in?

Nurse Julie Frye : Yes, he is. Did you have an appointment?

Michael Anthony : No, I'm not a patient, but it is most important that I see him.

[Dr. Frye appears from the next room]

Michael Anthony : You're Dr. Frye, aren't you?

Dr. Joseph Frye : Yes, I am.

Michael Anthony : Dr. Joseph Frye?

    Dr. Joseph Frye : Yes.

Michael Anthony : [Opening his briefcase]  My name is Michael Anthony. I have something for you.

    [Displays check]

    Michael Anthony : A cashier's check for $1,000,000, tax-free.

Dr. Joseph Frye : For me?

[Julie looks at the check as well]

Dr. Joseph Frye : Well, you made a mistake. I'm an MD, not a psychiatrist.

Michael Anthony : I know who you are, Dr. Frye.

    [Holding up check]

Michael Anthony : And this is yours.

    Dr. Joseph Frye : Mine?

Michael Anthony : [Retrieving document from his briefcase]  For that reason, I must ask you to sign this agreement...

Dr. Joseph Frye : Well, what did I do? I mean, why me?

Michael Anthony : I can't tell you that, Doctor. The money is yours to do with as you will, if you will sign this agreement not to reveal to anyone, except your wife, and she already knows, the amount you received or the circumstances under which you received it.

Dr. Joseph Frye : [Reading the pledge]  'or the money will be reclaimed.'

Nurse Julie Frye : If that's all I have to do for a million dollars, I'll sign, too.

Michael Anthony : [Chuckling]  That won't be necessary, Mrs. Frye.

[Dr. Frye signs and Anthony returns the document to his briefcase]

Michael Anthony : Thank you and good luck, Doctor.

    [Prepares to leave]

Dr. Joseph Frye : Good luck? What do you call this?

    [They shake hands]

Dr. Joseph Frye : Thank you, Mr. Anthony. Bye, bye.

Michael Anthony : [to Julie]  Bye, Mrs. Frye.
