When Sayid approaches Hurley with the radio he has modified, Hurley is reading the manuscript "Bad Twin" by Gary Troup. Gary Troup is the man who was sucked into the airplane turbine engine shortly after the crash.
The song Hurley and Sayid hear on the radio station is "Moonlight Serenade", recorded by the Glenn Miller Orchestra. Miller, besides a musician, was also a U.S. Army Major. On December 15, 1944, he and two other officers traveled from London to Paris and their plane simply disappeared.
Lost is known for its frequent direct and subtle references to Star Trek (1966). This particular episode was even directed by a former Trek actor/director: Roxann Dawson of Star Trek: Voyager (1995) fame.
