The secondary characters in "Trash Detail, Front and Center" are very interesting. The ex-NBA player 'Happy' Hairston stars as a thug as does Otis Day, the singer from "Animal House". Additionally, in a small role as a clerk, Lauren Tewes ("Love Boat") appears as well.
This story is about a homicide unit which is getting a lot of heat from the Captain. He blames them for an upsurge in murders and demands something be done. While it takes some time, using normal police tactics, they manage to catch a gang who have recently been doing a lot of holdups....and killing anyone who gets in their way. In the end, however, they get little in the way of thanks and their Lieutenant is fed up.
The episode is about police tactics but mostly about politics and working with little in the way of thanks. I'm not sure how realistic this is, though it sounds exactly like my job when I was a teacher....folks high up the chain of command expect HUGE results and then blame you when you actually try to do something to make a difference! A good but frustrating episode to watch.
