The story begins with an armed robbery of a supermarket. While the police are able to capture two of the for crooks, the final two are old pros and choose to take hostages to help them escape. The officer in charge, Pete Gerard, knows the department's policy is NOT to allow kidnappers to leave with their victims. However, Gerard recognizes that these two are professionals...and they know the law and how to get away. He also feels in his gut that the pair WILL kill the hostages. So, he lets them go...and the remainder of the show is about capturing these two.
To assist them in their investigation, an ex-detective (Gary Lockwood), Red Avery, helps out Gerard and Panelli (Ron Masak). Since losing his left arm, Avery has been working as an insurance investigator. Despite this, he's amazingly capable in a pinch...perhaps TOO capable. What exactly does this mean? This is a very good and tough episode. I particularly liked a few of the unexpected twists...making it a show with a few surprises...as well as one big laugh. Overall, one of the better episodes of season 4.
