Today on Tool Time, Tim demonstrates the WRONG way to use a router. You see, there are only two ways of doing something: the right way and Tim's way. Following that hullabaloo, Tim tries to get Al to help him install a satellite dish over the weekend, but Al opts for a nice, quiet weekend alone... helping Lisa the tool girl install a bookshelf. At home, as Tim eagerly anticipates the delivery of his surplus satellite dish, Jill informs him that she's going to have a gentleman caller. Strictly professional. His name is Rondall, an instructor from a job search seminar Jill attended and then they had coffee, and she was nice enough not to tell Tim about any of it. Finally, the dish arrives, and it was half the size of a football field. How will Tim ever get it up on the roof? While he struggles to figure that out, Rondall shows up. While Jill goes to get a splinter out of Mark's finger, Tim and Rondall are left alone to chat. Basically, he doesn't think much of Tim or his show, and seems a little on the stuck-up side. He calls Tool Time "funny", but I don't think he meant "ha-ha" funny. So while Jill and Ron-dull work on her resume, Tim shares his feelings with Wilson, who helps him see that he's actually jealous of this know-it-all who dared to call him funny.
He spies on them from outside, and gets suspicious when he hears Jill laughing at one of Rondall's jokes. It was one of those jokes that really isn't funny, unless you were there. When Rondy goes out to get some notes from his car, Tim tries to point out to Jill that he's trying to hit on her. He even searches the man's jacket and finds breath-mints and cigarettes. That's when Rondall comes back in, turning the situation very awkward. Despite his doubts, Tim goes on with installing the satellite dish...that's right, I forgot all about that, while Jill and Rondy-dondy work in peace. Get this: he invites her out to lunch, first with his prestigious colleagues, and then remembers they're out of town, but invites Jill to dine with him alone instead. All the while, Tim hangs upside down off the roof to spy on them, eventually falling off and dangling by a rope. It turns out his suspicions were right all along. Rondall WAS hitting on Jill, while claiming it was her sending him the signals. She quickly ejects his clueless butt out of the house and goes out to tell her hanging husband he was right. Eventually, Tim does get the satellite dish installed, and the Taylors settle in to watch all 200 of their new channels. But wouldn't you know, there was nothing on...except opera.
During the credits we see Tim sanding the hell out of a table, and I mention this because for some reason during a recent syndicated run, that was played during the closing credits of various episodes. I have no idea why, but then it's syndication, who can explain it? As for Satellite on a Hot Tim's Roof, besides having a great title, I have to say that there really wasn't much story or plot to this one. The only memorable thing that happens is Tim dangles off the roof. I guess they could have gone all out and shown him falling off repeatedly, but that could get old pretty fast. It's such a standard, basic sitcom fare about a guy moving in on another guy's wife and there's some awkwardness and misunderstandings, and that's about it. It's dull to say the least, but at the same time, it isn't a bad episode. It's still worth seeing, at least once.
