- THIS SYNOPSIS CONTAINS SPOILERS. After ten years of scrimping and saving, the Amos Sadler family, including wife Emelie, daughter Susan, brother Daniel, and cousin Ridge, have come from the hill country to Dodge City to buy a farm. Upon their arrival they discover that a financial panic back east has caused a run on the local bank and forced it to close temporarily, freezing their life's savings. Although banker Harry Bodkin promises to reopen the bank and repay all depositors, the Sadlers are devastated. As a desperate last measure, Amos, Daniel and Ridge decide to rob the bank, taking only the money that is rightfully theirs. By chance, Bodkin returns to the bank during the break in, where he confronts the three men. In the ensuing fight Daniel is seriously wounded and Bodkin knocked unconscious. As the Sadlers escape, Ridge surreptitiously steals an extra $3,000 for himself. In the marshal's office Festus hears the gunshot and runs to the bank, but the robbers have already fled. Back at the farm, Daniel is in dire straits but Amos is reluctant to call in a doctor. At Emelie's urging Amos brings Doc Adams to treat Daniel's wound. At the same time, Matt arrives to investigate and finds the Sadler family willing to admit the bank robbery with extenuating circumstances. Young Susan makes Ridge confess to stealing extra money. Judge Brooker dismisses the case against Amos and Daniel, but sentences Ridge to five years probation for his part in the crime.
