While we're all enjoying the new season of Doctor Who, led by Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson as the 15th Doctor and Ruby Sunday, it's always a pleasure to take a trip down memory lane. However, not every episode of the show has been all sunshine and rainbows.

From the war in which the Doctor himself played a major role to the deaths of some of our favorite companions, there has been no shortage of heartbreaking episodes. Here are 10 newschool Doctor Who episodes that hurt every Whovian the most.

This Doctor Who article contains spoilers.
Back in 2012, Doctor Who fans freaked out. We’d been told in advance that Clara (Jenna Coleman) would eventually replace Amy (Karen Gillan) and Rory (Arthur Darvill) as the next companion of the Eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith) in series 7 of the show. But fans weren’t prepared for just how soon Coleman would make her Doctor Who debut. Although she wouldn’t officially join Matt Smith in the Tardis until a few episodes later, Coleman first appeared in the series 7 premiere “Asylum of the Daleks” as a seemingly different character named Oswin, who, although she met a tragic end, encouraged the Doctor to remember her.
And now, 12 years later, it looks like Who history is repeating itself. In the absolutely wonderful Steven Moffat-penned episode, “Boom,” the Fifteenth Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) encounters a host of new allies, including a marine named Mundy. For fans of Star Wars: Andor,...

A new chapter in Doctor Who canon history began with the first full episode of the Fifteenth Doctor’s adventures “The Church on Ruby Road.” Series 14 opener “Space Babies” takes the Doctor and Ruby’s travels to the distant future. The adventures that follow will also feature trips to the Swinging ’60s, to the Regency Era, and to faraway planets.
While there will be moments of dancing, sightseeing, and meeting new people and beings, there will also be moments of danger. Whether from villains upset that their plans for domination are being challenged, or from extremes in the environment, there are plenty of things to trigger the Doctor and Ruby Sunday’s fight-or-flight instinct.
Den of Geek interviewed Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson about their character traits, what the Doctor and companion Ruby are most afraid of this season, and the importance of opening the Tardis door to everyone.

Wes Ball is ready to rumble with his upcoming release, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. After the reboot trilogy with Andy Serkis’ Ceasar in the lead came to an end, Ball took on the reigns with new characters and a new story but set in the same (or at least similar) world. This time, instead of Ceasar, we have Noa, a young chimpanzee hunter at the heart of the story, played by Owen Teague.

The movie will be out in theaters this weekend, but it already has a lot of positive responses from critics and industry veterans like Serkis and Matt Reeves. The latter served as the director of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2011) and War of the Planet of the Apes (2017). The reboot series was a huge hit among audiences, and the upcoming movie is...

Doctor Who has a habit of taking a throwaway line and making it into a big deal.
In 60th anniversary special “Wild Blue Yonder”, Russell T. Davies wrote what seemed like a passing joke about Isaac Newton mishearing the word ″gravity″ as “mavity” before committing to the bit and changing the word in the timeline from that point onwards, making the gag not so inconsequential after all.
Mavity isn’t alone in the show’s history. Throwaway lines have been seized upon and expanded over the years, some by the show’s fandom, but also by its writers. What started as world-building, texture or a dramatic beat has become the foundation for a whole new level of storytelling.

Bruce Timm, the visionary behind iconic DC animations like “Batman: The Animated Series”, wanted to make the “Superman: Doomsday” movie a brutal affair to mirror the shocking violence of the original comic storyline.

Timm is one of the biggest reasons behind the huge success of the DC Animated Universe. He worked on a number of animated DC films and is one of the greatest contributors to the comic book movie genre. One of his most well-known works is “Superman: Doomsday”, which he had planned a lot more brutal than the final product was.

It’s always fun to discuss horror novels that Aren’T Stephen King. No knock on the monster from Maine, he’s the master of horror novels over the last, oh I don’t know, 50 years, for a reason but its nice to not have the show be solely dedicated to his adapted works. He says knowing that he makes the schedule and decides what books to cover. See you in May, Mr. King! Funnily enough, the man actually loved today’s subject to the degree that he called it one of 2006’s best horror novels, but more on that in a little bit. The Ruins (watch it Here) was one of those hot properties by an author whose previous work was an instant success with critics, fans, and studio executives that put it to celluloid. The book came out and just two years later we were given a movie...

Zack Snyder is currently one of the most prominent directors in Hollywood, garnering both praise and criticism. While he has demonstrated skills in directing a specific type of film, his work has also faced its share of criticism and it’s not hard to see why. However, it appears that almost two decades before Snyder’s Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice, Batman and Superman clashed in the Dcau because Bruce Timm got very lucky.

Zack Snyder has faced criticism, with some labeling him a ‘hack’ for his film portrayal and perceived fixation on unnecessary themes and biblical imagery. This was pretty much evident in the Dceu film Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice. That said, his version of Justice League released a few years ago proved to be a huge success.

Zack Snyder and Warner Bros. did not part ways in the best possible terms, but they were never supposed to collaborate in the Dceu at all in the first place. Snyder was not WB’s first choice to direct their long-planned Superman movie, which took ages to conceive after Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns. Darren Aronofsky, who directed The Whale, was reportedly eyed for Superman’s revival movie.

Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman was poised to introduce one of the most formidable adversaries to the Kryptonian superhero, Doomsday. The filmmaker’s distinct vision and unwavering commitment to the superhero universe he was creating were evident, with actors like Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, and Gal Gadot embodying their iconic roles precisely.

Eminem paces through a dilapidated office, dressed in all black other than a yellow tie and some yellow accents on his sneakers, in the video for Lyrical Lemonade’s “Doomsday 2.” On the track, Eminem raps about how much “shit with a purpose that matters” but also dissing his longtime foe, Benzino. “Now I got a riddle … What is the opposite of Benzino?” he raps. “A giraffe. ‘Go at his neck,’ How the fuck is that?/How can I go at somethin’ he doesn’t have?” And he keeps going and going.

Warning: contains Spoilers for Doctor Who episode “The Star Beast” and several modern Doctor Who episodes
The internet is still whirring after that explosive first episode of the three Doctor Who 60th anniversary specials, with the return of David Tennant as the Fourteenth Doctor and his beloved ex-companion Donna Noble (Catherine Tate).
There was certainly a lot to take in: “The Star Beast” saw an alien spaceship crash-landing in London, the arrival of the adorably fluffy Meep and sinister, bug-eyed Wrarth Warriors, the return of Unit (the international intelligence taskforce that investigates alien activity), and the very real threat that if Donna remembers who The Doctor is, she’ll die.
We also met Donna’s family, including her husband Shaun and daughter Rose, whom we eventually learn has genetically absorbed some of the metacrisis that threatened Donna’s life, subconsciously giving her some of The Doctor and Donna’s memories.

Back before Season 3 and during Season 4, something seemed to be bringing the Tenth Doctor (David Tennant) and Donna Noble (Catherine Tate) together. Now, for Doctor Who‘s 60th anniversary in November, with Tennant (now the Fourteenth Doctor) and Tate back, destiny is coming for Donna and bringing them together once more. Ahead of the three special episodes, below is what you need to know about Donna Noble, as well as why Tennant returning as the Fourteenth, not Tenth, Doctor shouldn’t have been too much of a surprise. How the Doctor and Donna Met At the end of “Doomsday,” after the Tenth Doctor said goodbye to Rose Tyler (Billie Piper) in a parallel world, Donna, in her wedding dress, suddenly appeared on the Tardis. Sean McNamara’s horror thriller “Vindicta” has been picked up by Paramount’s Republic Pictures. The film rounds up Elena Kampouris, Sean Astin and Jeremy Piven for a story about a twisted serial killer.
Astin previously starred in Season 2 of “Stranger Things” as fan-favorite Bob Newby, boyfriend of Joyce Byers. Next episode? Don’t mind if I do.
The pleasure of rewatching a TV show is in shedding the responsibility of choice and submitting to the lazy river of an old favorite. Bob along its waters, allowing the current to pull you through the awkward early episodes, scandalous cast departures, writers’ strike half-season, all the way to the end – and then, why not? Start all over again. No pressure to choose. No burden of achievement. Just familiarity and comfort. Bob. Bob. Bob.
Until! An episode on the horizon threatens to interrupt your flow. If you just let it happen, you’d be pulled out of your reverie for a full 22 or – worse – 48 minutes. Perhaps it’s bad, or uncomfortable, or has unpleasant associations, or simply makes you feel too much. Either way, you skip it every time. Here are our writers’ nominations.

All good things come to an end, and so has the third season of the CW’s Superman & Lois. After taking the viewers through an adeptly written, emotional roller-coaster of a season that primarily dealt with cancer awareness and the prospect of human mortality, the finale of the third season ended in a massive cliffhanger that saw Superman and Bizarro Doomsday going at each other’s throats on the surface of the moon. Lex Luthor made his presence felt in the last two episodes of the season, and in the fourth one, which has already been confirmed, Man of Steel’s arch-enemy will have more of a substantial role to play. With the possibility of one of the most important comics being adapted in the aftermath of the third season, let’s take a look at all the hinted plot points that can be explored next year in Superman & Lois.

Juice Wrld stashed away thousands of songs prior to his tragic passing in 2019, and now, a collaboration with Cordae called “Doomsday” has been unearthed. Built around a sample of the Dr. Dre-produced Eminem track “Role Model” from 1999’s The Slim Shady LP, it’s the first taste of an album from Cole Bennett’s Lyrical Lemonade.
As behind-the-scenes footage in the music video shows, “Doomsday” isn’t a song that was posthumously stitched together — the young rappers and friends actually traded bars in the recording studio, with Juice Wrld even laying out his vision for the visual treatment. Though Bennett ended up going in a different direction, he includes a preview of what Juice’s concept looked like.

Mikael Marcimain, the Swedish director of hits “Call Girl” and “Gentlemen,” is on track to direct “Devastation,” an epic and horrific tale of survival set in 1867. “Devastation” is one of the first projects developed by Mylla Films, the new banner set up by Jakob Abrahamsson and Patrik Andersson (“Midsommar”).
Mylla Films has enlisted Nordic distributor Scanbox and French boutique genre specialist Alexis Perrin of Rumble Fish as co-producers.
A period piece set in northern Sweden, “Devastation” is penned by Melina Maraki (“The Liberation of Harold Kvist”). There’s a self-defeating argument I’ve often heard used to explain the state of gun violence in this country. It goes something like this: If we couldn’t change things after 20 first-graders were murdered at Sandy Hook, what hope is there now?
I understand the impulse to give in to cynicism and despair. I also don’t think it serves anyone to ignore the facts. It’s true that gun violence has reached epidemic proportions. In 2021, nearly 50,000 Americans died from gun violence, and tens of thousands more were injured...

Following the success of Man of Steel, Zack Snyder was off to the races with his vision of Superman. Warner Brothers looked at him and saw gold. And with Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy having wrapped up, the Batman character was officially free and clear. So they set their eyes on adapting one of the most popular stories in all of comics. A clash so big that other films would tease it just to get a cheap pop. So we’re getting into all the Doomsday building, Lex Luthor slobbering, and Dark Knight murdering in Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
Bringing two titans together on the big screen is anything but an easy process. Warner Brothers decided to bring back their Superman team of Zack Snyder and David S Goyer and sought to make a new film. And while many people expected Man of Steel 2,...

Doctor Who is once more in the loving embrace of Bad Wolf Productions, the only production company to ever send its brand name back in time to paradoxically ensure its own creation. With that, and the shiny new Disney+ revenue flowing in, the word on the street is that Doctor Who is about to try to build its own MCU.

A reboot of Red Sonja spent nearly fifteen years in development hell before going into production last year with director M.J. Bassett (Solomon Kane) at the helm. Before Bassett signed on, the project had passed through the hands of directors Robert Rodriguez, Simon West, Bryan Singer, and Joey Soloway, with Hannah John-Kamen, Rose McGowan, and Amber Heard being considered for the lead role. Today The Hollywood Reporter posted an interesting article about how Red Sonja was able to escape from development hell… and it basically boils down to a director’s enthusiasm for the material and a producer’s desperation to get the movie made.
The 50-something Bassett says she has been borderline obsessed with Red Sonja since her childhood, and “I cursed every time they announced someone else (as director). I kept telling them, ‘When you change again, let me know.’” And they did let her know when Soloway...

Ah, the glory days of early 2000s television, when studios scrambled to capitalize on the success of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Friends," and "Beverly Hills, 90210." Enter The WB's "Smallville," a Superman prequel based on the blue boy's formative years, before he donned the tights, red underwear, and cape. Starring Tom Welling as Clark Kent, Kristin Kreuk as Lana Lane, Michael Rosenbaum as Lex Luthor, Sam Jones III as Pete Ross, and Allison Mack as Chloe Sullivan, the series offered a fun spin on the Superman story and tinkered with iconic characters in a way that made them feel fresh. Lex Luthor, for example, starts out as Clark's best friend and gradually devolves into his comic-book counterpart. At the same time, Superman regulars such as Lois Lane (Erica Durance), Jimmy Olsen (Aaron Ashmore), and Supergirl (Laura Vandervoort) were given makeovers to properly update them for the modern era; ditto...

"Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice" not only featured the titular characters going at it but also introduced a classic DC Comics villain to the big screen. Despite only being the second film in the franchise, Superman (Henry Cavill) battled Doomsday, the monstrous alien life form destined to kill the Man of Steel. Zack Snyder may have pulled the trigger too soon by including the antagonist, but his appearance had been on the filmmaker's mind for quite some time. Long before his theatrical, live-action debut in the ill-fated sequel, Snyder teased the existence of Doomsday in "Man of Steel."
In "Batman v. Superman," Doomsday was a product of Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg) mutating General Zod's body using his own DNA in the crashed Scout Ship in Metropolis. On Krypton, Doomsdays existed before cross-breeding was outlawed by the Law Council, which speaks to how dangerous they are since the same council...

"Independence Day" was not always going to be the title of Roland Emmerich's 1996 mega-blockbuster movie. Over the German director's four decade-plus career, he's been partial to single-word titles like "Godzilla," "2012," and most recently, sci-fi disaster extravaganza "Moonfall." When it came time to tell the story of the mighty resistance to a global alien attack, the title was going to refer to the first offensive and not the Earthlings' counterattack; the studio wanted to call the movie "Doomsday" (not to be confused with Neil Marshall's 2008 post-apocalyptic action picture of the same name).
Bill Pullman stars in the film as one of the great movie Commanders-In-Chief, President Thomas J. Whitmore. It's on Whitmore's watch that the alien warships converge over Earth's major cities and blow most of them to smithereens. Though he's forced to flee to Nevada's Area 51, Whitmore commands a final counterattack with the remaining fighter jets available.

Doomsday is drawing near in the latest installment of HBO Max‘s Doom Patrol.
The trailer for Season 4, which was released Tuesday, Mark Sheppard’s Willoughby Kipling warns: “Something very big and very dangerous is headed our way. Immortus is real, and it’s coming. We are wandering into the literal end of days as we speak.”
The Immortus Project appears to be a looming threat, explained only as the pursuit for immortality. It’s not clear what big bad the Doom Patrol will be facing, but it may have something to do with the DC supervillain General Immortus, who was introduced in the 1950s as an enemy of the Doom Patrol. In the trailer, the group eventually comes to the conclusion that the only way to win is to travel back in time.

It’s hard to explain now, thirty years on, just what a huge event The Death of Superman was. It grew far beyond anything DC Comics could have imagined. It all started with that same old thing in comics, falling sales on the Superman books. There was nothing wrong with the stories or creative teams, they were all very good. I should know because I have practically every issue after all. The problem was with culture. Punisher was big, Ghost Rider was big, Wolverine was big, Batman was getting darker and darker. Superman was just out of step with tastes. So, to get a bit of publicity, then Editor Mike Carlin and his creative teams decided to kill Superman (temporarily of course).

Genre regular Neil Marshall, whose credits include Dog Soldiers, The Descent, Doomsday, Hellboy, and The Reckoning, is teaming up with Alleycats writer Simon Uttley to executive produce and serve as showrunners on the live-action supernatural action series Nightshade. 108 Media is financing, co-developing, and producing the show, with Marshall also on board to direct the pilot episode. In Neil Marshall's suffocating, dismal, gooey 2005 subterranean survival movie, there aren't any masked, stab-happy killers tip-toeing about, nor is there a supernatural curse being passed from one individual to another. The only "trauma" in the film is the very literal kind that exists in its characters' heads. It's the type they can't escape no matter where they go and no matter what they do. Two decades after making his debut with werewolf war movie “Dog Soldiers,” Neil Marshall offers another spin on military-vs.-monsters action in “The Lair,” a semi-return to form that’s energetic if uninspired and increasingly silly. Nonetheless, it represents a bit of a rebound after the disasters of last year’s “The Reckoning” and an unhappy “Hellboy” reboot he disowned. This first issue from Scarlett Prods., the company he founded with star, co-writer and executive producer Charlotte Kirk, gets released by Rlje Films to limited U.S. theaters as well as VOD and digital Oct. 28. Launch on multi-territory genre streaming platform Shudder is planned for early next year.

Near the end of August, it was announced that the long-awaited Red Sonja reboot was filming with M.J. Bassett (Solomon Kane) directing and Matilda Lutz (Revenge) taking on the lead role. In early September, we heard that Oliver Trevena (The Rising Hawk) had joined Lutz in the cast – and Trevena’s character was the only one, other than Red Sonja herself, we ever got a description of. The actor had been cast as Tr’aal, “a gladiator-type warrior who joins Sonja in her fight against an evil emperor”. Unfortunately Deadline reports that Trevena has since had to drop out of Red Sonja due to scheduling issues. They also report that Rhona Mitra of Doomsday and Underworld: Rise of the Lycans is in the cast, but no details about her character have been revealed.

Mortal Kombat Legends: Snow Blind is the third and latest installment of the Warner Bros. animated franchise following Scorpion’s Revenge and Battle of the Realms. And it wastes no time getting right into the bloody action. Literally in the first minute of the film a convoy of vehicles pulls looking like it rolled out of one of the better Road Warrior rip-offs smashes through the gates of a town. The occupants begin slicing off heads, ripping out spines, impaling and incinerating the residents in gruesome detail. King Kano and the Black Dragons have arrived, ironically telling the survivors they’re here to protect them in return for a small tax.
