A classic-style whodunit
Ninochka30 April 2009
Warning: Spoilers
This is a quite good crime series set in modern StPetersburg. The friendship / romance relationship between Masha (a tough and beautiful public prosecutor) and Vinokurov (a brave policeman) may remind you Booth and Brennan from the Bones. The personal stories of characters from the prosecutor's office and policemen are shown in an entertaining, sometimes humorous, sometimes serious way. The crime stories themselves are quite captivating, sometimes with a touch of mysticism (e.g. "A Stranger's Cross", "Saturday, 3 PM", "Playing the Victim"). Anna Kovalchuk is definitely better as a prosecutor than as the Bulgakov's Margaret. This series made Emilia Spivak (the pretty, bitchy, know-it-all lawyer Zhenya) a star. I recommend it to everyone who enjoys classic-style crime stories like MURDER, SHE WROTE, DIAGNOSIS MURDER, COLUMBO or BONES.

Sustains Interest Throughout Seasons!

My husband and I came across this series by chance, even though we love Ada Staviskaya productions (Mentovskiye Voyny is one of her most famous and best work() and even searched for her work at one point but, somehow, missed this one. All I have to say that this is quite a find and we enjoy every episode to the fullest. Each case occupies 2 episodes, with an overall continuity and development with the cast. This is a pretty standard format; however, I wish that the outside overall plot were developed in more detail. The writing is intelligent, the dialogue and characters are alive, clichés are thankfully avoided. Bottom Line: A great crime series; make an effort to watch it.
