Renée Zellweger will don the English accent for the revisit to Bridget Jones’ world. In the upcoming fourth movie in the franchise, Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, the plot is said to “pick up with Bridget in her early fifties, as she navigates the challenges of modern life while juggling the responsibilities of motherhood.” Along with Zellweger, returning players from the past films are set to include Hugh Grant, and Emma Thompson.
Variety has now reported that the new installment has added some notable names to the cast. Isla Fisher will be joining the comedy along with Nico Parker (How to Train Your Dragon), Josette Simon (Anatomy of a Scandal) and Leila Farzad (Black Mirror: Joan is Awful). Actor Nathan Fillion has been the lead in several hit shows, with one of his most popular projects being Firefly. The show has been canceled for years, and yet Fillion is still recognized by the series to this day. However, he also starred in the hit series Castle, attracting a new legion of fans. But which one does he think brought him the most popularity?
Nathan Fillion was constantly recognized for ‘Firefly’ and ‘Castle’ Nathan Fillion | Michael Ansell/Getty Images
It’s easy to see why Fillion would be recognized for Castle. The show was a hit on the network series ABC during its original run. But surprisingly, Firefly might’ve rivaled Fillion’s Castle fame even at the peak of the show’s run. Firefly only lasted for one season from 2002 to 2003. Whereas Castle had a long eight-season run.

10. Remember Me (2010)
Robert Pattinson’s Remember Me remains a serious romance drama for the vast majority of its duration. A troubled rich kid falls in love with a NYPD Detective’s daughter; they go through a lot together and admit their feelings to each other… And then, out of absolutely nowhere, he dies in the 9/11 attack. The end. Seriously?
9. Lucy (2014)
Scarlett Johansson's Lucy explores the classic “people are only using 10% of their brains” scenario. Thanks to the experimental drug, a drug mule gains access to many skills and knowledge… Fast-forward: she evaporates, meets the first human, sees the Big Bang, and stores All Knowledge Ever on a bloody Usb, of all things.

Monday’s episode of The Voice — and the end of Season 25’s Playoffs — served up a painful reminder that sometimes it’s not enough to be “cute as a button.” Chance the Rapper and Reba McEntire had to shrink their teams of five contestants apiece to just three each. Along the way, some promising singers were cut (although, to be honest, none that I was as sorry to see go as Anya True and Mafe last week). Which six acts were the last put through to the Lives? The Veil is another example of why we are in the golden age of brilliant female characters on screen. These strong, smart, and cunning female characters own the screen and set them ablaze. It just so happens that many can be found on FX. A network that celebrates edgy and innovative storytelling, with great female roles at the series center.
Often, these roles subvert female stereotypes. You have Anna Sawai’s brilliant performance in Shōgun, one of the greatest roles in television history, who gives a thoughtful, sumptuous, and cunning performance. Then, last year, in A Murder at the End of the World, Emma Corrin brought to life one of the most complex characters on television in recent memory.

Hugh Grant has been expanding on his career beyond his famous rom-coms, having starred in last year’s special effects-laden big-budget films Wonka and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. Grant will be returning to his popular franchise with Renée Zellweger for the recently announced upcoming fourth film in the Bridget Jones movies, Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy. The plot is said to “pick up with Bridget in her early fifties, as she navigates the challenges of modern life while juggling the responsibilities of motherhood.”
Grant recently spoke with the publication People as he teases the next installment in the series. The English actor stated,
It is very moving as well as funny. It’s partly based on Helen Fielding’s experiences of bringing up two children by herself after her husband died. And so Bridget is bringing up two kids and wondering whether she should ever go back to dating.

It’s finally happening! Renée Zellweger, Hugh Grant, and Emma Thompson are returning for another chapter in the Bridget Jones saga with Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy. Universal Studios and Working Title are the studios, with Michael Morris, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Leo Woodall (The White Lotus) joining the cast.
Inspired by Helen Fielding’s popular novels and a previous column she wrote as the title character for The Independent, the Bridget Jones film series revolves around Zellweger’s Bridget Jones, a hapless single woman lost in love who explores a complex web of relationships. The series began in 2001 with Bridget Jones’s Diary, followed by the sequels Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason and Bridget Jones’s Baby, debuting in 2004 and 2016. The trilogy was a surprising box office banger with $760 million worldwide in ticket sales.

It lasted only one season, but fans still mourn the demise of the sci-fi/western Firefly. As much as we love watching (and rewatching) the series, sometimes it's not enough.
Are you longing for a little more Captain Tight Pants? Want to see Zoe quietly kick some adversary's butt? Wishing you could revisit the Hero of Canton?
Well, we can't bring back Firefly -- oh, how we wish we could! -- but we can tell you where you can tune in to see the cast now.
If you can't get enough of the crew of the Serenity, read on to find out where you can see them now.
Ron Glass - Shepherd Derrial Book
Shepherd Book was the preacher with a cryptic past who boards the Serenity and befriends its crew. We loved Book's warmth and acceptance of his other crew members while still being able to hold onto his faith.

"Star Trek" was the undisputed king of sci-fi television in the 1990s, but it lost that crown in the 2000s; prequel series "Star Trek: Enterprise" ended the franchise's reign with an abbreviated four season run (2001 to 2005). Different shows won the hearts of online fandom, including two contemporaries of "Enterprise" — "Futurama" and "Firefly."
The legacy of "Firefly" far outlasted its 14 episode run; fan demand led to the creation of the finale movie "Serenity" in 2005. Meanwhile, "Futurama" enjoyed a respectable 72 episode run from 1999 to 2003, but enduring popularity has revived it twice, first from 2007 to 2013, and again for a new season which premiered this summer. Short length doesn't mean a show will be forgotten, especially when the Internet can sustain a fandom like never before.
As detailed in "Star Trek" oral history book "The Fifty Year Mission" by Edward Gross and Mark A. Altman, these three shows intertwined in an episode of miscommunication and Hollywood office politics.

Science fiction fans remember the last four months of 2002 as a blessed but bedeviled time. "Firefly" became a 14-episode phenomenon, dead in the water before the season ended, but eternal in the hearts of its viewers. Their passion managed the impossible, reviving the show for a big-screen send-off in "Serenity" and several canonical comic book miniseries. To this day, crafters knit their own loving reconstructions of Jayne's remarkably orange hat. A Malcolm Reynolds -- or five -- can be found at any Sf convention, or recreated in video games by players aiming to misbehave.

The first two seasons of the commercially successful Sweet Magnolias ended with a tinge of drama. This Netflix Original, in the first and second seasons, established several characters for the viewers, and it helped in creating a world set in the small town of Serenity in South Carolina. The people are genuinely nice, and they seem to be God-fearing and act in the best interests of the people around them. There are only a handful of antagonists that add spice to the rather mundane lives of the townspeople. The overarching plot of the show revolves around three independent women who are best friends and stand by each other. Season three, just like the last two, brings to you the same women and their lives going forward from the incident that shook them up at the end of the season two finale. Creator Sheryl J. Anderson brings back the over-the-top, sugar-coated...

Sweet Magnolias happens to be one of the top romantic dramas that revolves around a town and its residents. The show introduced a plethora of characters and helps us comprehend how Helen, Maddie, and Dana Sue become integral parts of their lives. Serenity, South Carolina—the name exudes peace, and that is exactly what the townspeople want. The three leads of Sweet Magnolias run the show in Serenity, and they happen to be the nicest souls. It will be interesting to see what kind of problems they will be facing with the third season of the show.
The second season ends with Ryan proposing to Helen because he thinks she is still pining for him. The truth here is that she is not sure if she wants to be with him. Erik, her current boyfriend, was by her side when she went through a miscarriage and has been instrumental in her feeling better ever since.

Whenever you see features about television shows that were cancelled too soon, there’s a good chance that Firefly will be part of the list. Dropped by Fox in 2002 after only 11 of its episodes aired (out of 14 that were filmed), the show had a devoted following that only grew after it was cancelled. Incredibly strong word of mouth, followed by strong DVD sales, resulted in the show being given a chance for a proper farewell: the movie Serenity, which was released in theaters in 2005. Nathan Fillion, who starred in both Firefly and Serenity (and has gone on to even greater fame with Castle and The Rookie) has always had a soft spot in his heart for Firefly, and he told us he was incredibly grateful that he and the other cast members were given one last chance to play their characters in Serenity. It's been a little over a year since Sweet Magnolias Season 2 aired on Netflix, and we really miss our TV friends.
Almost every character exhibited major cliffhangers, leaving the fans anxious and speculating for months.
The wait is almost over. Sweet Magnolias Season 3 premieres on Thursday, July 20. What do we want to see the most when it returns?
These are some of our must-haves for the drama series, including closure for several of the cliffhangers and more developed romances and friendships.
Did any of your wishes make the list?
Helen Makes Her Choice
On Sweet Magnolias Season 2 Episode 10, Ryan proposed right as Helen and Erik became more serious.
In some ways, this triangle is fascinating since Ryan was Helen’s first love, and she’s loved him her entire life and wants this relationship to work, but now she’s in a mature relationship with Erik, who sees the woman she’s become.

Welcome back to Serenity, y’all! Sweet Magnolias, Netflix’s soapy drama about a trio of friends in a small Southern town returns to the streamer for its third season on July 20. The theme for the upcoming 10 episodes? “New relationships and new challenges,” which are “good for the soul,” as Maddie (JoAnna Garcia Swisher) says in the official trailer for the upcoming 10 episodes.

Maddie, Helen (Heather Headley), and Dana Sue (Brooke Elliott) are ride-or-die besties. Whatever drama is happening in their lives, they can count on being able to pour out their troubles to each other during their weekly margarita nights.

You're probably breathing out a huge sigh of relief right about now.

Netflix is finally headed back to Serenity. Sweet Magnolias Season 3 is coming to the streaming service this July, and it sounds like there is plenty of drama in store for Maddie, Helen, and Dana Sue.
‘Sweet Magnolias’ Season 3 premieres July 20 JoAnna Garcia Swisher and Heather Headley in ‘Sweet Magnolias’ Season 3 | © 2023 Netflix, Inc
Season 2 of Sweet Magnolias premiered in February 2022. That season ended on something of a cliffhanger, with Cal (Justin Bruening) getting arrested following an altercation at Sullivan’s, Ryan’s (Michael Shenefelt) surprise proposal to Helen (Heather Headley), and the shocking revelation that Maddie’s (JoAnna Garcia Swisher) ex Bill (Chris Klein) was Isaac’s (Chris Medlin) father. Plus, Dana Sue (Brooke Elliott) reunited with her estranged husband Ronnie (Brandon Quinn).
The finale also introduced a mysterious woman from Dana Sue’s past. The stranger slashed Dana Sue’s tires and accosted her daughter Annie (Anneliese Judge). But who...

Fans who watched "Firefly" when it aired on Fox for its one and only season must feel really justified these days. The network aired the episodes out of order and canceled the show before the entire season had aired, and yet its appeal is undimmed all these years later. Watching it now, it's almost comical how they could have missed how brilliant the series was. Sure, there are some things in the 2002 space Western that didn't age well, including the alleged actions of its creator Joss Whedon. Still, it created a whole new version of the quippy patter conversation style that went beyond what Whedon's "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" gave us.
The show has gained cult status over the years, with fans called Browncoats gathering at conventions some two decades after "Firefly" premiered and the release of the 2005 film "Serenity," which essentially served as the series' second season. "Firefly" references...

Based on the short-lived but incredibly beloved cult TV series "Firefly," Joss Whedon's 2005 film "Serenity" is saddled with pretty complicated mythology. Set in the 26th century, a distant solar system has been largely terraformed, and those living on the planets closest to the sun live in bliss under an all-powerful organization called the Alliance. A viewer will get no points for guessing that the Alliance isn't entirely good, and that there is a great deal of corruption at play. Also, crime and poverty still exist on some of the solar system's outer worlds, to the point where they look a lot like the Wild West, with characters on horseback and high-tech trains that speed through dusty mesas.
The main characters of "Serenity" are the brown-coated crew members of the title ship, a craft populated by former Rebels and malcontents who have turned to smuggling to survive. Fans of "Firefly...

Joss Whedon's and Tim Minear's 2002 sci-fi series "Firefly" was, for many years, held up as the ur example of pop culture-related missed opportunities. The show lasted only 14 episodes and aired from September to December. Despite being aired out-of-order, "Firefly" accrued an enormously passionate cult following, likely following Whedon over from his other successful shows "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and its spin-off, "Angel." When "Firefly" was released on DVD, its cult audience expanded as fans were now able to see the arc of the series presented properly. Eventually, "Firefly" gained enough cultural traction to warrant a follow-up feature film, 2005's "Serenity." The film was meant, according to fan scuttlebutt, to be the show's unmade second season condensed into 119 minutes. Since 2005, "Firefly" has remained in the realm of board games and tie-in comic books. Since the ousting of Whedon for alleged bad behavior on various sets, demands for a reboot...

A remake of Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo may be on the way at Paramount Pictures, with Robert Downey Jr. at its center and Steven Knight writing its script.
Vertigo was originally produced by Paramount back in 1958, and according to Deadline, Hitchcock’s estate favored the studio for handling the new production. The original film starred James Stewart as John “Scottie” Ferguson, a former police detective who has developed a fear of heights and vertigo. After leaving the force, Ferguson is hired by an acquaintance to follow his wife and investigate her strange behavior. It was the first movie to use the dolly zoom, an effect that distorts perspective, mimicking Ferguson’s disorientation.
In the upcoming iteration, Downey will take on Stewart’s starring role, as well as produce alongside his wife, Susan Downey, and John Davis and John Fox. It’s not the only period remake Downey’s been involved...

Never tell “Star Wars” the odds!
Things are moving faster than a Mos Espa podrace over at Lucasfilm. On Wednesday, we wrote that heavyweight writer-producer Damon Lindelof and his new partner (padawan?) Justin Britt-Gibson had walked away as writers of the upcoming (and untitled) “Star Wars” film. The project, currently more shrouded in more mystery than Emperor Palpatine, is set to be directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, a “Ms. Marvel” vet and director-producer on a long list of documentaries.
But the Kathleen Kennedy-led production shingle has found its new scribe. Steven Knight, the writer-director of Tom Hardy vehicle “Locke” and creator of “Peaky Blinders,” is currently suiting up to travel to that galaxy far, far away. The British Knight has also written the screenplay for the Steven Frears film “Dirty Pretty Things,” the David Cronenberg film “Eastern Promises,” and the underrated Robert Zemeckis spy thriller “Allied.”

Science fiction TV shows have a shorter shelf life than cryptocurrencies and social media influencers. What gives? It's not that complicated: big budgets + low ratings = cancellation. Hey, those space-age sets and costumes, alien makeup, and CGI aren't cheap. Meanwhile, passionate fans may sign petitions by the thousands, but ratings are what matters, and those fanbases are too small to impress execs trying to court advertisers.
Given the economics of television, it's not shocking TV studios routinely dump pricey sci-fi shows in favor of the newest "Big City Cop Show" procedural. To be honest, it's surprising sci-fi shows get made at all. Yep, it sucks, but that's show business. While it's easy to explain why most sci-fi TV shows get canceled, the reasons for some cancellations are downright baffling. These include sci-fi shows that were dropped despite decent ratings, canned with fully completed seasons, or even dumped after inspiring hunger strikes!

On March 12, 2023, Ruth E. Carter won her second Academy Award for her work on the costumes of "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever." It was Carter's second Oscar win after 2018's "Black Panther," making her the first costumer in history to win Academy Awards for a movie and its sequel. Her wins are both well-deserved. Extrapolating from the fictional country originally found in the pages of Marvel Comics, "Wakanda Forever" constructed the clothes and uniforms worn by the citizens of a high-tech central African nation that, thanks to their access to a rare miracle metal and an equally rare super-powered flower, allowed them to advance centuries beyond the rest of the world. Carter designed the clothes for Wakandan royalty, the royal guard, and the country's civilians. She also had to evoke Wakandan funerary rights, as the film opens with the funeral of the original Black Panther. Carter has said that Wakandan dress...

For all the allegations of his behavior that have surfaced in recent years, it's hard to deny the impact that Joss Whedon had on Hollywood in his prime. Whedon was pretty much a master of ensemble pieces before he was tapped to write and direct "The Avengers" in 2010 — but "The Avengers" was much bigger in scale compared to "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Firefly" or "Serenity," the TV shows that put him on the map in the '00s.
Shortly before "The Avengers" released in 2012, Whedon spoke to Den of Geek about the challenges of writing the film. One of the bigger hurdles came in uniting so many different characters, each who'd headlined their own respective projects and existed in wildly different worlds. "You don't try to make anybody else's movie," Whedon explained. "Jon Favreau's going to do a thing, [Kenneth Branagh] is going to do a thing. I'm going...

"Firefly" premiered on Fox in 2002 and soared for 11 glorious episodes before crashing and burning due to network meddling and gross ineptitude. Three unaired episodes were included on the subsequent DVD release, bringing the final episode tally to 14. The series was briefly resurrected with the 2005 film "Serenity," which concluded the narrative in a satisfying enough fashion. For diehard Browncoats — the moniker super fans have given themselves — the series has an outsized hold on our hearts despite its criminally shortened lifespan. As the theme song says: "You can't take the sky from me (us)."
Though "Firefly" is an ensemble, Captain Malcolm Reynolds (Nathan Fillion) is the protagonist and its best character. He is the catalyst for most of the dire situations the group finds itself in, but his heart is in the right place. For Mal, life is simple: Find a job, see to your crew, and keep flying. Writing for one or two main characters can be difficult, but when your TV show or film has an ensemble cast playing lead roles, it is infinitely more challenging to balance them all. Joss Whedon has had to do that more than once. Whedon, of course, is responsible for projects like "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" "Angel," "Cabin in the Woods," "Firefly," its sequel, "Serenity," and "The Avengers."
Even for a writer whose ensemble work has been praised (and reexamined as on-set standards are reevaluated and allegations about his behavior emerge), making sure each character gets their due and plays a role was a difficult prospect. Whedon spoke about this in an interview with Den of Geek back in 2012, right before the release of both "The Avengers" and "Cabin in the Woods." He called balancing this sort of thing a "nightmare," and it's easy to see why that might be.

As someone who only got into "Bob's Burgers" within the past year, it was wonderful to see the Belchers make the leap to the big screen with "The Bob's Burgers Movie." Unfortunately, the film underperformed at the box office, raking in about 34 million against a 38 million budget, which means that any chance of a sequel, at least theatrically, has probably been nipped in the bud. It's a shame, really, as the 2022 feature, while certainly flawed, settled in nicely among the other animated feature adaptations such as "The Simpsons Movie" and "Beavis and Butt-Head Do America."
What "The Bob's Burgers Movie" lacked in a consistent musical rhythm, it made up for with a delightful and hilarious hometown adventure with Bob (H. Jon Benjamin), Linda (John Roberts), Tina (Dan Mintz), Gene (Eugene Mirman), and Louise (Kristen Schaal). Fan campaigns can be a powerful thing, and one of the most successful ones came in the form of the 2005 film "Serenity," which served as a follow-up to the cancelled-too-soon Joss Whedon series, "Firefly." Long before the cries for a "Snydercut" ever hit the internet, there was a fan movement to get answers following the cancellation of "Firefly" after only one season. Unlike the fan campaign that managed to get "Star Trek" back on the air after a wobbly first season in the 1960s, the "Firefly" fan campaign earned them a different reward: a big, bold action-adventure movie directed by the series' showrunner himself, Joss Whedon.
"Firefly" was a story about scrappy survivors and outcasts, and the theme song's chorus, "you can't take the sky from me," became the mantra of the fandom, who called themselves "Browncoats" after the series' rebel faction who had lost their universe-wide war. Whedon took...

"Resident Alien" star Alan Tudyk has had a number of memorable roles throughout his career. In terms of movies, long-time fans look back fondly on the parts he played in "Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story," "A Knight's Tale," and "Tucker & Dale vs Evil." He even had that memorable guest spot on an episode of "Frasier" as the new owner of Kacl that Dr. Crane takes under his wing. Although, his most beloved role to date is probably still the fun-loving pilot Hoban "Wash" Washburne from Joss Whedon's "Firefly" and its feature film sequel "Serenity."
However, to many members of his modern fanbase, Tudyk is likely more known for his voiceover work. Part of the reason why "The Strangers" has endured as an effective horror movie is that we've all had that feeling of being home alone at night, yet it still feels like there's something else watching us from the shadows. After 85 minutes of homebound terror, the words "because you were home" make all of the preceding violence sound so hauntingly meaningless. A couple on the rocks is thrust into a harrowing night of survival for no other reason besides that their lights were on.
It wasn't until a decade later that a sequel came to theaters with "The Strangers: Prey at Night," which /Film's Chris Evangelista called a "schlocky slasher showcase." Rather than rehashing the hopelessness of Bryan Bertino's 2008 home invasion thriller, the follow-up from Johannes Roberts saw the human prey actually landing a few blows in against their stalkers, and living to see another day. Now the clocks have gone back, it’s high time to stay cosy at home while watching Netflix.
Every month, a wide selection of titles are removed from the service without much warning.
This is why certain movies and TV shows suddently disappear from your watchlist.
So , to avoid surprise, here is a list of everything being removed in November (including its first ever original series).
Nb: The Independent compiled this list with help from What’s on Netflix.

Though writer-director Joss Whedon may not be who we thought he was, there is no question that his television shows remain widely loved and celebrated. This is especially true of the imaginative sci-fi Western "Firefly," which aired for only 11 glorious episodes in 2002. Most fans wouldn't see the remaining three episodes until the series came out on DVD in 2004. Fox bungled this one, pure and simple.
Fans mourn what might've been the way Independents look back on the Unification War, but there's no profit to be had in wishing things were different. "Firefly" gave us 14 wonderful episodes before flying off quietly into that good night. At least there was a form of closure in the 2005 film "Serenity," and the story goes on in a series of graphic novels. As the theme song says, "You can't take the sky from me."
With that in mind, this piece means to sort the wheat from the chaff.

The great Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu said, "The flame that burns twice as bright burns half as long." Most people think Tzu was talking about the importance of conservation and avoiding burnout. He could just as easily have been referring to the beloved sci-fi television show "Firefly," which graced our screens for 14 sublime episodes, briefly returned via the 2005 film "Serenity," and was never heard from again. Some things are simply too pure for this world.
Browncoats everywhere know the best thing about "Firefly" is the characters. The crew is a group of disparate castoffs, many of them lovable losers of a kind. Yet, they are all wonderfully unique and perfectly cast, bringing the witty and often surprising dialogue to life.
There are no bad "Firefly" characters. If all was right with the Verse, this would be a nine-way tie. However, by their very definition, rankings put somebody first and someone last.

It's difficult sometimes to know when something is over. Much like relationships, TV shows can wear out their welcome, taking too long to realize that it's time to say goodbye. Other series are cut down in their prime, stopped before they could even truly get started, with their potential never fully realized. "Firefly" is an example of the latter, just another casualty of Fox's itchy trigger finger, canceled after only 11 of its 14 episodes had aired back in 2002. Centering on a motley crew of smugglers traveling the 'Verse in the spaceship Serenity, no one could've predicted the space Western would gain any traction through DVD sales, let alone enough to warrant a feature film continuation. Even after the 2005 release of "Serenity," viewers still hoped for more and "Firefly" has enjoyed a rich life beyond television in both comics and novels.

Human beings have a natural resistance to change. Every time anything in someone's life is thrown off course, from their daily routine to their preconceived notions about the world, people find themselves either adjusting or resisting. The numerous instances of anti-progressive thought that can be seen in society today (especially that coming from cisgendered white men) are proof positive of this continual phenomenon, and thus the arts — being the bastion of cultural commentary that they are — react accordingly.
Olivia Wilde's second feature as a director, "Don't Worry Darling," is the latest in an increasingly large wave of socially conscious horror and genre pictures. While some of the pitfalls of this trend can certainly be seen in the film, its themes of feminism and misogyny combined with its surprisingly compelling ambiguity makes it a more fascinating experience than its tabloid-style press tour would indicate.
