“Candyman” dominated every platform in its first weekend on premium VOD. Available for $19.99, the Universal horror movie aligned with standard studio strategy to debut on home platforms after its third week of theatrical play. It still ranked #4 in theaters, falling only 26 percent.
Nia DaCosta’s update of the 1993 horror classic displaced the studio’s own “F9” ($19.99), after an expanded edition returned the widely seen sequel to #1 across all charts last week. The worldwide top grossing film of 2021 is now #2 at both Vudu and Google Play, and #3 at iTunes.
The strength of “Candyman” took #1 on Vudu’s full week chart, even though its release covered only three days of Vudu’s listing period. Of the 17 different films on the three VOD charts, 10 are PVOD titles ($19.99 or higher) and fill 23 of the 30 total slots.
Four PVOD films made all three charts: “Candyman,” “F9,” “Black Widow” (now reduced to $19.99), and “The Suicide Squad,...

Last week, three studios made major announcements that suggest Premium VOD income isn’t enough to prioritize it over other platforms; this week, the VOD charts suggests a drop in the momentum toward home viewing options. This may be temporary, with “Candyman” (Universal/$19.99) scheduled for release September 16, but Disney will present the rest of its 2021 movie slate as initial theatrical exclusives. Universal placed “Halloween Kills” day-and-date on Peacock October 15, and Paramount announced that it would replace chairman and and CEO Jim Gianopulos with the more Paramount+-friendly Brian Robbins, currently head of Nickelodeon.
Warner Bros. provides same-day HBO Max access for its theatrical releases, but James Wan’s “Malignant,” a $40 million-budgeted horror film, mustered only 735,000 viewings (per Samba TV’s estimate). Clint Eastwood’s “Cry Macho” this weekend and next month’s “Dune” should do much better. Disney’s “Free Guy,” just announced for September 28 PVOD, should also find high interest.

For almost the entire running time of this movie, we have no idea what it is about. What is it trying to say? What sort of story is it trying to tell? I’m “biast” (pro): love Rosamund Pike
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
In my head I’m calling this film What Is This I Can’t Even: The Movie. It works at least as well as the blandly generic and not even really apropos Return to Sender, which describes a tiny section of the second act that then resolves itself and has no further bearing on the story. In fact, the bearing it does have on the story hardly makes any sense at all, not on the level of plot, character, or theme. Not that the plot, characters, or putative themes make any sense on a whole-movie level,...

Josh Lucas stopped by the Bravo Clubhouse for an appearance on Watch What Happens Live on Thursday, and he didn't shy away from a question about his best onscreen kiss. "I gotta agree with Jennifer Lopez, who I heard was here and said it was me," Josh said, echoing what Jennifer told Andy Cohen during her appearance on the show last June. As it turns out, the kiss was for a hot scene that was left on the cutting room floor. "We did this movie called An Unfinished Life with Robert Redford and Morgan Freeman, and we have a phenomenal sex scene in a car that was so good, I guess it was cut out," he said while showing off his signature smirk. The writer-director uses Cannes press conference to say that the Us has lost its way since the second world war, and that rampant development must be controlled
Robert Redford today accused the Us of losing its way in the years since the second world war. Speaking at the press conference for his new film All Is Lost at the Cannes film festival.
"Certain things have got lost," said Redford. "Our belief system had holes punched in it by scandals that occurred, whether it was Watergate, the quiz show scandal, or Iran-Contra; it's still going on…Beneath all the propaganda is a big grey area, another America that doesn't get any attention; I decided to make that the subject of my films."
Redford, now 76, also had critical words for the Us's never-ending drive for economic and technological development, which he considers has been a damaging force.

Being a teenager is hard. We.ve seen examples of it time and time again, both on film and in real life. Teenagers in broken homes have it even worse, as we.ve also seen on film a bunch of times. So in order to stand out in the crowd, a movie that centers on this kind of storyline has to pull some tricks to be heard above the din. I.m not sure if the above trailer for As Cool As I Am does that exactly. The film is adapted from the 1994 novel by Pete Fromm with a screenplay from Virginia Korus Spragg (An Unfinished Life), and Max Mayer (Adam) directing. Sarah Bolger (The Moth Diaries) plays Lucy Diamond, a teenage girl who suddenly finds herself reaching maturity just as her parents, played by Claire Danes (Homeland) and James Marsden (Robot and Frank), are losing theirs. Apparently the deal...

Twelve years ago, HBO put to screen a miniseries that was one part Television event, one part historical drama, which had the considerable backing of executive producers Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks and the hype of being something of a spiritual successor to their highly acclaimed war film Saving Private Ryan. Through ten one hour long episodes, essentially using TV as a medium to explore a vast and epic journey through the Second World War that would simply be impossible to map on the big screen, and with Stephen E Ambrose’s critically acclaimed non-fiction book as source material and a huge cast representing a collective of real world heroes, one of the most ambitious storytelling exercises the small screen has ever mounted was brought to life. The result was much fanfare, both critically and among the masses, a recurring trope that continues to this day, and the fledgling start...

When we saw that "Salmon Fishing In The Yemen," the latest from director Lasse Hallstrom had been added to the Tiff slate, we didn't go out of our way to find time to see it. Many foreign directors dream of making it in Hollywood, and after breaking out with My Life as a Dog Sweden's Lasse Hallstrom certainly did, directing What’s Eating Gilbert Grape? Something to Talk About, The Cider House Rules, Chocolat, An Unfinished Life, Casanova, The Hoax and Dear John. But his last, Hachi, went straight to video in the U.S. and did middling business overseas; the market is unforgiving now for his stock-in-trade, heart-warming dramas. Thus Hallström is returning to make his first feature in Sweden in 24 years. Iron Man 2 may still be sitting pretty atop the chart, but the real winner is Chris Morris's jihadist comedy, which enjoyed the highest site average of all the new releases
The winner
A comedy about British-born suicide bombers starring Riz Ahmed and Fonejacker prankster Kayvan Novak is by no means a sure thing at the UK box office. Hence, executives at Four Lions' backers Optimum posted messages of excitement and relief on Facebook over the weekend as the impressive numbers came rolling in: £609,000 from just 115 screens.
The site average of £5,292 was the highest of all the new releases, and double most of them. The result also compares favourably with the most obvious reference point: In the Loop (debut of £469,000 from 104 screens), released by Optimum in April 2009. The films share two writers – Jesse Armstrong and Simon Blackwell – and boast directors with reputations for edgy TV. But whereas Armando Iannucci...

She’s 40 years old going on 8, a womanchild who has desperately wanted a baby for years, goes through the enormous expense and preparation of having herself inseminated with donated sperm, and yet knows absolutely nothing about childbirth. He’s a preposterously perfect man -- a gorgeous, buff, smart, sensitive successful entrepreneur whose “fatal flaw” is his lack of a college degree... oh, and just happening to enter her life literally moments after her insemination. Together, they are the least suspenseful rom-com couple in ages, perhaps ever: of course they’re going to end up together, but The Back-up Plan barely offers them any roadbumps along the way. It isn’t even particularly pleasant watching the undeniably physically attractive and (usually) charismatic Jennifer Lopez (An Unfinished Life) and Alex O’Loughlin (Whiteout) as these two ridiculous people.

The last time MTV News caught up with Corey Haim in July of 2007 he seemed by most accounts to be in a pretty good place. Everything is relative of course. Haim wasn’t exactly on top of the world. But he was back in the public eye, and for the first time in a long while he was clearly relieved it wasn’t related to bad news.
He was promoting “The Two Coreys,” a show that A&E was calling a reality/hybrid at the time. The truth is whatever it was, it certainly captured a fair amount of the reality of Haim and Feldman’s oddball relationship. Inextricably linked since their heyday in the '80s, the two were forever wrestling with what they meant to each other. Throughout my interview with Haim he called Feldman both a brother and a backstabber. I’d accuse him of playing up...

This is some interesting casting. The Playlist found a new quote from Johnny Depp (at BangShowbiz) where he talks about a new project he's involved in with Swedish filmmaker Lasse Hallström (who last directed Dear John as well as Chocolat, An Unfinished Life, and many other films). Apparently Hallström has cast Depp and his real life girlfriend Vanessa Paradis, who last starred in a French comedy called L'arnacoeur (or Heartbreaker in English), in his new film called My American Lover, about the story of French feminist philosopher, writer and theorist Simone de Beauvoir and American novelist Nelson Algren. "It's called My American Lover," Depp said. "Vanessa plays the French feminist Simone de Beauvoir and I play her lover Nelson Algren who is real macho." The Playlist thinks this is an adaptation of de Beauvoir's book "A Transatlantic Love Affair: Letters to Nelson Algren," which is a collection of correspondences sent...

Review in a Hurry: From sensitive, boring director Lasse Hallstrom (The Shipping News, An Unfinished Life) comes a love story featuring Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried as the two most perfect people ever. This is undeniably appealing at first, no matter which lead you find more attractive, but a horribly contrived third act displaces our empathy with its conveniences. The Bigger Picture: John (Tatum) is not only a super-handsome Special Forces man with a sculpted physique, but also an endearingly clumsy and sensitive dork in matters of love. Savannah (Seyfriend) isn't just a drop-dead-gorgeous blonde who loves skintight clothing, but she also builds houses for the homeless while on spring break, and dreams of...

When it comes right down to the bare essentials, the nitty-gritty facts of what makes a movie work for an audience on the most basic level, it always boils down to emotions. Good horror movies scare us, good comedies make us laugh, some movies make us feel good, some make us sad – whatever the emotion is, if the audience truly experiences that emotion through the film, that film has succeeded.
Swedish director Lasse Hallstrom is not my favorite filmmaker, but that doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy his movies. If the name doesn’t ring any bells, I am sure his career as a Hollywood director will. Hallstrom is known particularly for his often emotional, somewhat sentimentally-driven films, usually adapted from popular books, such as Cider House Rules, Chocolat, and What’S Eating Gilbert Grape? Personally, I’ve found his best work to be An Unfinished Life.

This weekend Sony's "Dear John" opens with Channing Tatum, Amanda Seyfried and Richard Jenkins in starring roles. Sony Pictures distributes the eagerly anticipated release helmed by Lasse Hallström ("The Hoax," "Casanova," "An Unfinished Life). The romantic drama is screenwritten by Jamie Linden ("We Are Marshall") based on the novel by best-selling author Nicholas Sparks. There are a decent amount of images added as well as plenty video clips including interviews with stars and filmmakers. The tells story of John Tyree (Channing Tatum), a young soldier home on leave, and Savannah Curtis (Amanda Seyfried), the idealistic college student he falls in love with during her spring vacation.

#1 James Cameron to redo “The Fantastic Voyage”
Now don’t be getting too excited because there’s no news that Cameron will direct the project but Variety does report that Cameron is producing the film and from what I can gather, the project (and a few more to follow) is an effort to make use and money from the expensive technology he spent years prepping for Avatar. It’s a great opportunity to remake this sci-fi classic but with “Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem” writer Shane Salerno on board to adapt the original story, I can’t say I’m all that excited.
#2 Natalie Portman starring in “Pride Prejudice and Zombies”
This seems like an odd pairing but Portman does have the looks for period drama though I’m not sure what possessed her to agree to a period piece about a man searching for love amidst a zombie outbreak. Portman...

Deborah Lurie, the composer who recently scored the Tim Burton-produced animated fantasy movie 9 based on themes penned by Danny Elfman, is doing the original score for Dear John. This is the new film from Swedish director Lasse Hallström, who previously worked with Lurie on An Unfinished Life, a film where Lurie replaced a rejected score by Christopher Young. I don't believe I have ever reported the nominees for the International Film Music Critics Association before, but in the spirit of covering more award season news than is probably necessary I figured, "What the hell?" The nominees listed below make up the fifth annual International Film Music Critics Association Awards for Excellence with Wall-e receiving the most nominations including Film Score of the Year, Best Score for an Animated Film, Best Film Composition (for "Define Dancing") and Composer of the Year for Thomas Newman. The other big nominee is Danny Elfman who received the most individual nominations this year with seven: Composer of the Year; Film Score of the Year and Best Documentary Score for Standard Operating Procedure; Best Drama Score for Milk; Best Action/Adventure Score and Best Individual Cue for Wanted ("Success Montage"); and Best Fantasy/Science Fiction Score for Hellboy II: The Golden Army. The International...

Jennifer Lopez's latest film premiere was marred by angry animal activists in New York on Wednesday when protestors staged an anti-fur demonstration outside the screening. People For The Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) members hurled abuse and held up posters outside the An Unfinished Life premiere. The posters featured images of animals slaughtered for their fur with the slogan 'Here's Another Unfinished Life.' Lopez incurred the wrath of PETA earlier this year when she featured fur designs as part of her new Sweetface clothing line.

Latina beauty Jennifer Lopez is set to tour for the first time ever - five years after she began her singing career. The actress-turned-singer began her pop career in 1999 with her debut album On The 6, featuring tracks produced by her then-boyfriend Sean 'P Diddy' Combs and the hit singles "If You Had My Love" and "Waiting For Tonight." Lopez is ready to throw herself back into music again after making a string of films Jersey Girl, An Unfinished Life and Shall We Dance?. She enthuses, "I think I'm going to be doing my first tour. I've been talking about it for a long time but I always get sidetracked because of the movie things. This time I'm really going to try and get out there."...

Lasse Hallstrom is in negotiations to helm the Fine Line Features drama Harry & Caresse. The film, based on a script by Andrea Berloff, is inspired by the true lives of Harry and Caresse Crosby, who influenced the Paris literary scene in the 1920s. The project follows the couple's relationship through drugs, sex and endless parties all in the name of creating art. Hallstrom will also produce along with Leslie Holleran, his partner in LaHa Films. Michelle Weiss, Jonna Smith and Swanna MacNair are overseeing the project for the studio along with Fine Line president Mark Ordesky. Hallstrom, who earned an Oscar nomination for his work on The Cider House Rules, most recently directed the 2001 Miramax drama The Shipping News. He also helmed the upcoming Miramax drama An Unfinished Life, which stars Jennifer Lopez and Robert Redford and is slated for release next year. Hallstrom is repped by UTA.

Jennifer Lopez, in the midst of her own real-life engagement to Ben Affleck, is nearing a deal to slip on another engagement ring for a starring role in the New Line Cinema comedy Monster-in-Law. Lopez is in early negotiations to star in the project, which centers on a girl who's set to marry the perfect guy until she meets his mother, the world's worst mother-in-law. New Line outbid several studios for the rights to the Anya Kochoff-penned script in February. The project is being produced by Benderspink and overseen at the studio by New Line production execs Richard Brener and Magnus Kim. Lopez has two projects hitting theaters in the coming months, including the Revolution Studios drama Gigli and the Miramax Films romantic comedy Jersey Girl. She also appears in the upcoming Miramax drama An Unfinished Life opposite Robert Redford, the Miramax romantic comedy Shall We Dance? opposite Richard Gere and the Columbia Pictures thriller Tick Tock. Lopez is repped by Endeavor, Handprint Entertainment and attorney Barry Hirsch.
