Today’s film is the 2002 short Hostage. The film is written by David Carter, Greg Hahn, and Vincent Ngo, and directed by John Woo. It also stars Maury Chaykin, Kathryn Morris, and Clive Owen, and is part of BMW’s series of The Hire short films. BMW recently announced that they would be making a new series of short films, with Gus Van Sant already signed on to do one of the shorts. Clive Owen will soon be seen on the Steven Soderbergh tv series The Knick.

One quick note before we start. I have adjusted the design of this article slightly and you may need to clean your cache or refresh the page to reload the stylesheet in order for it to appear properly.
Rounders and Swingers (Blu-ray) I don't remember the last time I watched Swingers, but I previewed this Blu-ray and was laughing a lot. It's also amazing to see Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau so much younger and so much skinnier and yet their style of acting hasn't changed in the slightest. I wouldn't say Swingers is a must own on Blu-ray, but if you don't have it and do enjoy it, you may want to consider it.
As for Rounders, I have loved this movie ever since first seeing it and it is one I have watched several times, but it...

“God knows I’ve got no complaints about my career… I’ve had a very good time and gotten some very good work done.” Sidney Lumet in 2006.
I was at a conference almost all day yesterday, so I’m a day late on this; I’m sure most, if not all of you, have already heard the sad news.
On Twitter, Spike Lee has been paying his respects to the revered filmmaker who died yesterday at age 86. Spike starts by listing homages to Sidney Lumet’s classic Dog Day Afternoon in Inside Man… specifically, he states, “We all lost a Master Filmmaker yesterday, the Great Sidney Lumet. There could have been no Inside Man without his superb Dog Day Afternoon; There are several Homages to Dog Day Afternoon in Inside Man; The same Actor who delivered Pizzas to Al Pacino did the same to Clive Owen; the Actress who refused...

I love getting IndieWire’s Cannes Wish List. IndieWire's commentary on each film is interesting in and of itself. I find myself remarking "I didn't know that!" at every other entry. My former Tipped for Cannes Report (when FilmFinders was my company) was one of my most popular reports because film buyers and programmers could immediately hone in on their targets. So, in keeping with tradition, I pulled together the list Screen International (Si) and blogger ion (he did a lot of research for this!) published in February just after the Berlinale and am now going to compare it with Iw’s. My links for the title are to IMDbPro and for the contact either to the seller (Isa=International Sales Agent) or the producer.
After this, I will track which of these land in Cannes, which in Toronto, Venice, etc.; which get acquired by whom (to be gathered together...

A sequel to Hancock is moving forward, with Columbia signing writers Adam Fierro and Glen Mazzara to pen the follow-up to the Will Smith superhero movie, which grossed $624 million worldwide last year. The original producing team is expected to return. Plot details are being kept under wraps, though the scribes will work with Smith and director Peter Berg to build on the world hinted at in the first movie. There’s no word if Jason Bateman and Charlize Theron will be part of the sequel. The original starred Smith as a boozy, irresponsible superhero who undergoes an image makeover by a public relations man. It later is revealed that the hero is part of a line of immortal beings who have been around for more than 3,000 years and begin to lose their powers when in proximity to fellow immortals. Fierro spent several seasons as a writer-producer on FX's The Shield...

With the release of Tony Scott's remake to Taking of Pelham 123, I have decided to fill our site with as many posts related to hostage situations in film. Below is one of nine Bmv short films produced for the internet back in 2001. Hostage The Driver is hired by the FBI to help defuse a hostage situation. A disgruntled employee has kidnapped a CEO and has hidden her, demanding $5,088,042. The Driver delivers the money, writing the sum on his hand as instructed by the hostage taker. After he is told that he holds the life of a person in his hand, he is ordered to burn the money. As he complies, the federal agents break in and attempt to subdue the man, who shoots himself in the head before he reveals where the woman is hidden. The Driver then tries to find the hostage before she drowns in the trunk of a sinking car.

John Travolta and Denzel Washington star in this remake of one of my favorites, The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3, a hostage drama set in the NYC subway. But here, the two stars are completely flat, and director Tony Scott focuses on shaky cameras and shiny gadgets instead of New York, and the human drama, and the plot. Hit the clip to get my instant take, taped right after the screening. It's a segment we're calling Rearview Reviews. Have you seen The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 yet? Lemme know what you think!

Zach Braff Retires His "Scrubs": This upcoming season of "Scrubs" will be Zach Braff's last, said showrunner Bill Lawrence at Wednesday's Television Critics Assn. press tour panel. The ABC Studios series arrives this season after seven seasons on NBC. There was no announcement whether this would be the last season of the show, but it will be Braff's. The actor said he would be open to returning as a guest star, and could possibly also direct. "The end of the show will be about J.D. leaving the hospital," Lawrence said. "When you leave, it's about holding on to your relationships." [Variety] Woo Goes for Arthur Comic: John Woo will direct comicbook adaptation "Caliber," to be unveiled at next week's Comic-Con in San Diego. Kathryn Morris has nabbed a role in Paramount Pictures/DreamWorks Pictures' Paycheck for helmer John Woo. Shooting is under way in Vancouver. Morris (Minority Report) joins Ben Affleck, Uma Thurman, Aaron Eckhart and Michael C. Hall in the Dean Georgaris-penned project. Based on a short story by Philip K. Dick, Paycheck is a futuristic tale centering on a man (Affleck) who has part of his memory erased by his employer and begins to find clues to his whereabouts for the past two years. Morris is set to play Rita Dunne, a co-worker of Affleck's character. John Davis, Michael Hackett and David Solomon are producing Paycheck. The project reteams Morris with Woo, who directed her in his BMW Films short Hostage. The actress, who next appears in the Dimension thriller Mindhunters opposite Val Kilmer, Christian Slater and LL Cool J, is repped by Endeavor, Mosaic Media Group's Dave Fleming and attorney Jason Sloan. She also recently filmed the lead role in Jerry Bruckheimer and Meredith Stiehm's drama pilot The Unsolved for CBS from Warner Bros. Television, Jerry Bruckheimer TV and CBS Prods.
