Exclusive: As his acclaimed comedic thriller Hit Man approaches its June 7 release on Netflix, filmmaker Richard Linklater may have identified his next project, as sources tell Deadline that he’s in development on a film called Blue Moon.
Taking its name from the 1934 ballad written by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, the film follows Hart as he attempts to save face while celebrating his former partner Rodgers’ great success on the night of his musical Oklahoma!‘s Broadway opening. While it’s believed that this will end up being Linklater’s next film, that’s not entirely clear at present.
We’re told that Robert Kaplow — co-writer of Linklater’s 2008 film Me and Orson Welles — penned the script for Blue Moon and that Linklater will produce the project alongside his manager John Sloss.

When the universe offers a sign — and the sign comes straight from the lips of Nicolas Cage — you can’t ignore it.
That, in essence, is how 31-year-old guitarist Ben Katzman found himself on Survivor. The paperwork sat on his desk, but Katzman was racked with doubt. He’d already lost everything once: his band, his record label, his DIY community. Going on reality television seemed like a potential career suicide. Which is where Cage comes in.

The Hit Man star takes aim as her career levels up
Adria Arjona knows just how scary it can be to meet your heroes. One of her all-time favourite movies is School Of Rock, and when she first met Richard Linklater, not even the relative safety of a Zoom call could save her. “My hands were sweaty,” she admits to Empire. “I was really trying to play it cool and that lasted for about ten minutes.”
After a series of supporting turns in genre fare, crime dramas (True Detective), and recently as the forthright Bix in Andor, the 31-year-old actor is stepping into fresh territory with Linklater’s romcom HitMan. Alongside Glen Powell, she stars as Madison, a housewife with a controlling husband who falls for the contract killer (Powell) she hires to take him out. The only problem: her new boyfriend is actually working undercover for the police as a fake hitman.

One of the downsides of streaming’s cord-cutting era has been how hard it is to stumble on a great movie midway through. You know the joy of which we speak. After a long day at work or school, a moment to unwind turns into discovering one of your favorite flicks, that one you’ve probably seen a hundred times, is playing right now on cable. And wouldn’t you know it, you’ve come across it right at your favorite bit.
Before you know it, you spend the next 90 minutes catching up on a film you already have half committed to memory. It’s a perhaps uniquely dated phenomenon, but a great one for those of us who have entire personal libraries of movies that we may never have seen from beginning to end. I spent years, for example, convinced Con Air started with Nic Cage enunciating, “I said...

In 2004, a little movie called Napoleon Dynamite came out and quickly became The cult movie of the decade. It made the director, Jared Hess, a hot ticket, and for his follow-up, he opted to team with Jack Black for a luchador wrestling comedy called Nacho Libre. In it, Black plays Ignacio, a cook at an orphanage run by monks in Mexico, who idolizes luchador wrestlers, even though the sport is forbidden within the monastery. When the church runs out of the funds needed to feed the many orphans they take care of, Ignacio decides to pursue his dream of being a wrestler to raise money for the kids.
Too bad he sucks as a wrestler.
In this pretty hilarious little comedy, Black delivers perhaps his greatest physical performance as Ignacio transforms into the legendary wrestler Nacho Libre. While it’s become a somewhat forgotten film, it’s worth noting that...

Miranda Cosgrove is recalling an interaction she had with a young iCarly fan that didn’t necessarily go as expected.
During an appearance on Wednesday’s episode of Live With Kelly and Mark, host Kelly Ripa noted how the 30-year-old actress and singer had “not changed very much” since her debut acting role in 2003’s School of Rock at age 9.
“I do sometimes [get recognized],” Cosgrove said in response. “It’s funny because there was a moment when a lot of young kids didn’t really know who I was because [iCarly] hadn’t been on for a while. Then, Netflix got the show and they started playing the old seasons.”
The Mother of the Bride actress went on to recall an encounter she had with a young fan during a recent Target shopping trip.
“There’s a little boy just kind of looking at me in the toy aisle. He kept looking up at me.

The School of Rock may be back with Black.
In an interview with Joe, Jack Black was asked about his 2003 hit film, School of Rock. He raised hopes when he responded, “I’m ready.”
“I wish there’d be a School of Rock 2: Electric Boogaloo, he said, giving a shout-out to the 1984 sequel to Breakin’, titled Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo.
For the uninitiated, in School of Rock, Black played Dewey Finn, a substitute teacher who enlists some misfit students to form a rock band. The film later inspired a Broadway musical adaptation
Black has teased a sequel before, but has always backed away from his comments in later interviews, so fans shouldn’t get hopes too high. Any sequel would have to have the original rock students assume the role of parents, since they are largely in their 30s now.

In 2003, popular actor Jack Black found himself in the middle of the scandal of the century. He managed to squirm his way into a prep school under false pretenses, committed the misdemeanor of impersonating a teacher named Ned Schneebly for the sake of acquiring a little rent money, and led the students to an epic battle of the bands performance that we're still talking about over two full decades later. It was a whole big thing.
Obviously, "School of Rock" went down in history as one of Black and director Richard Linklater's finest moments, not to mention its impact on the ensemble of incredibly talented child actors, all of whom actually played their respective instruments in the film. In short, it was the pop-culture event that inspired a whole generation of kids to embrace their inner punk-rock anarchists, eventually leading to a Broadway musical adaptation and even a short-lived Nickelodeon series.

Jack Black recently told the news outlet Joe, while making the press rounds for “Kung Fu Panda 4,” that he is more than ready to make a sequel to “School of Rock,” the 2003 comedy classic that was directed by Richard Linklater and written by Mike White. Black has stayed close with his younger co-stars over the years, but a movie sequel has never gotten off the ground. “School of Rock” was adapted into a hit Broadway musical, but perhaps it’s time to get the band back together on the big screen.

Jack Black is totally down for a School of Rock sequel.
More than two decades after the beloved musical comedy, directed by Richard Linklater, premiered in 2003, the actor-comedian recently told Joe that he’s “ready” to reprise his role as energetic musician Dewey Finn.

Jack Black has officially expressed interest in making a School of Rock sequel, or as he quickly dubbed it, “School of Rock 2: Electric Boogaloo.”
Speaking with Joe, the Tenacious D frontman and Kung Fu Panda star lit up at the idea of returning to his School of Rock character Dewey Finn, though had one request should the project ever take shape — the involvement of original writer and White Lotus creator Mike White.
“Mike White wrote the first one, and he’s a genius,” Black said. “We’d have to have Mike White back in the saddle. But he’s real busy right now with White Lotus, the best show on TV.”
As Black pointed out, White is indeed quite busy with HBO’s The White Lotus. The show’s anticipated third season — which is to take place in and around Koh Samui, Phuket, and Bangkok, Thailand — is currently slotted for a 2025 release.

"Kung Fu Panda 4" topped the box office over the weekend, managing to overtake last week's champion "Dune: Part Two." Make no mistake, nobody is crying for Denis Villeneuve's sci-fi epic as the sequel managed to stay atop the charts internationally over the weekend. But with the latest entry in the "Kung Fu Panda" franchise, Universal has yet another animated hit on its hands. More than that, the movie's success out of the gate has cemented Jack Black's status as an unquestionable movie star capable of putting butts in seats.
The latest from DreamWorks Animation pulled in $58.3 million over the weekend, easily giving it the number one spot over "Dune" ($46 million). It's impressive for a few reasons. For one, pre-release expectations had Black's return as Po the panda pulling in less than $40 million. So the fact that the film outperformed expectations en route to a chart-topping performance is...

Skadoosh! One week after Jack Black and Kyle Gass’ 20-second clip where they animatedly performed “Baby One More Time” by Britney Spears went viral on multiple platforms, the duo — known together as Tenacious D — have put out a longer recording of the song.
Dropped on Black’s social media accounts, the minute-and-a-half-long track is accompanied by a music video that was shot at the Kung Fu Panda 4 premiere in Los Angeles. The full, three-minute version of the song is now on Spotify.
In the video, Black wears a black and white panda-inspired suit, dances and does karate moves with various members of the Kung Fu Panda cast and crew, including Awkwafina, Bryan Cranston, James Hong, Ke Huy Quan, along with his friend Gass. Kung Fu Panda star Po also makes several appearances. Black, of course, puts his own hard rock spin on the song, a vocal style he became known...

The Kung Fu Panda universe has earned an unparalleled level of respect and commendation from fans ever since it was first launched on the big screens in 2008. And inevitably enough, a major credit for this skyrocketed fame goes to none other than Po’s voice actor, Jack Black. Thanks to his immaculate animated voice-acting skills, viewers got roped into the saga like wildfires in Savanna.

That being said, when Jack Black was initially offered this fan-favorite role, he wasn’t all too sure about taking it on. After all, jumping from the live-action genre to the animated one isn’t the easiest, especially when it is the lead character that you have to voice. But amazingly, DreamWorks actually used one of Black’s own masterpieces to convince him to voice the beloved Dragon Warrior!

Jack Black’s Po will take on his most formidable villain yet, Viola Davis’ Chameleon, in Kung Fu Panda 4. The film will hit theaters in a few days but the critical reviews of the film are out after its premiere at the AMC 14 Theater at The Grove in L.A. The largely positive reviews prove that Po & team have managed to impress the viewers a fourth time. However, we believe that Jack Black may not return for the future Kung Fu Panda sequels.
Jack Black’s Po and Awkwafina’s Zhen in Kung Fu Panda 4
As believed earlier, the Furious Five have a limited role in the film. It might be the last time fans get to hear the voices of the likes of Angelina Jolie and Jackie Chan. The future sequels are likely to be voiced by a new young cast.

Video game movies have come a long way in the last several years, with the likes of "Sonic the Hedgehog" and "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," among others, making great strides. As a result, many Hollywood studios are turning to the gaming world in hopes of finding the next great big-screen franchise. With a title like “God Save Texas, “ a new three-part docuseries inspired by an acclaimed piece of nonfiction carrying the same name and authored by Lawrence Wright, one might think this particular program will unquestionably take a harsh look at the Lone Star State, focusing solely on its flaws and a bleak viewpoint as it looks to the future. There’s no doubt that Texas has, time and again, been mired in a barrage of controversial moments throughout the past 178 years of its existence as the 28th United state, but under the direction of Texas natives Richard Linklater, Alex Stapleton and Iliana Sosa (“What We Leave Behind”), here three specific Texan sticking points are touched upon extensively, each handled well individually but when joined together paint a fascinating picture of how far Texas has come and how far it has yet to go.

Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny released from Shout! Factory on February 13th, 2024.
Jack Black is among my favorite comedic leading men. The first film I ever reviewed was School of Rock for my high school newspaper. His physical delivery is unmatched, and he’s able to make nearly every character, no matter how absurd, feel relatable and approachable. Despite my adoration for the man, Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny had evaded me for eighteen long years. Now, thanks to the fine folks at Shout! Factory, that’s all changed.

I was twenty-years-old when Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny released to theaters. That’s seemingly the perfect age for an R-rated comedy comprised of utter silliness and rock-and-roll.

Jack Black has been in his fair share of hit movies over the years, from "School of Rock" to "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" and everything in between. The man has been a bonafide movie star for decades. But even the biggest stars have to suffer a misfire every once in a while and, for Black, one of his biggest misfires was also a very personal endeavor. 2006's "Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny" brought the rock duo of Jack Black and Kyle Gass to the big screen with initially disastrous results. Yet, time has been kind to the film as it has become a true cult favorite.
Black recently spoke about the film's legacy in the latest issue of Total Film magazine. The actor described "Pick of Destiny" as his baby. Not only because it's the only movie he wrote personally, but because it was based on an emotional truth,...

It's been 14 years since Illumination entered the movie scene with "Despicable Me," and in that time, the film series has become the highest-grossing animated franchise ever. It has done so on the back of catchy tunes, memorable characters, a fun story of a villain accidentally (and reluctantly) finding redemption, and also the cultural phenomenon that is the Minions.
After the second movie in the franchise, we've also seen a new spin-off movie in between each new "Despicable Me" film that's centered on the Minions and their adventures before they met their best friend and overlord Gru. Now, after a seven-year absence, Gru is finally back -- and this time, he encounters an even greater challenge than when he tried to steal the moon. Now, he's a father.
That's right, following the monumental success of "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," Illumination is taking the "Shrek" route with Gru and the Minions by giving Gru a family.

The opportunity to see a Sundance Film Festival premiere is unlike anything else. The anticipation and mystery that approaches each opening credit is unmatched and it is what makes the festival, now in its 40th year, so special.
Most Sundance films have the stereotype of being very heavy in subject matter. For instance this festival I have seen films centering around suicide, body dysmorphia, religion and even the Holocaust. So it’s not often you leave a Sundance film with the statement, “Dang! That was so much fun!”
Well tonight, I left a theater with a smile on my face and a sense of enjoyment that took me quite by surprise.
A very familiar Sundance face, Richard Linklater, returned to the Utah Festival with Hit Man, his latest film that he directed and co-wrote with the film’s lead actor Glen Powell. The two have combined to create a sure-fire...

However, the loss of one exciting film does not mean 2024 will be short of great animated movies. In its place will be cartoons to meet the needs of every type of moviegoer, from franchise continuations to adaptations of beloved works to new entries. One of the most exciting movie releases of 2024 just got its first trailer. "Hit Man," the latest film by acclaimed indie director Richard Linklater (the man responsible for "School of Rock") received near-universal praise when it screened at film festivals in the fall of last year, and now audiences can finally get a taste of what the fuzz is about. Turns out, a lot of it may just be the chance to see Glen Powell dressing up in a lot of silly outfits. You know what, though? We're fully in.
"Hit Man" sees the latest collaboration between Powell and Linklater after "Everybody Wants Some!!" and "Apollo 10 1⁄2: A Space Age Childhood," and this time they also co-wrote the script together, based on the 2001 Texas Monthly magazine article of the same name by Skip Hollandsworth (who also wrote the article that inspired Linklater's "Bernie" as well as co-writing that screenplay...

Not every movie — indeed, almost no movie — was meant to be turned into a musical. But the trend of doing so has become more common over the last two decades, and when you see a movie-to-musical transformation that really works, a surprising alchemy occurs. It can feel as if that story was always made to be told through song and dance; when you think back on the non-musical version, it can now seem like it’s missing something. That’s the sensation I’ve had at movies-turned-Broadway-musicals like “Hairspray,” “School of Rock” (built around Andrew Lloyd Webber’s greatest score in decades), and even “Back to the Future”.
The same dynamic works, in a clever if less spectacular way, in “Mean Girls,” the movie adaptation of the 2018 Broadway musical version of the classic 2004 screen comedy. Will the new movie replace the original film in anyone’s affections? That might depend on how old you are.

Mike White’s acclaimed comedy drama The White Lotus will soon commence production on season three, the cast has now been confirmed.
Mike White has one of the most eclectic filmographies in Hollywood. From his days as an indie darling in the late 1990s when he penned films like the terrific Chuck and Buck, The Good Girl and Orange County, to big budget blockbusters like Richard Linklater’s School Of Rock, before returning to smaller fare like Year Of The Dog and Brad’s Staus. He then turned to television, scripting two seasons of Enlightened starring Laura Dern.
In 2021, White created what has become his most acclaimed work, The White Lotus, which has amassed a plethora of Emmys across its run so far, both for White’s writing and Jennifer Coolidge’s performance as Tanya McQuoid.

The Jack Black-headlined School Of Rock has been moved from a PG to a 12A by the BBFC. More here…
It’s fairly well known that over time, the British Board of Film Classification – the BBFC to its chums – changes the certificates that it previously awarded to films. After all, times change, attitudes alter, and society becomes more resistant to levels of cussing, fruity stuff and violence that previously saw 15 and 18 certificates dished out.
As such, we’ve seen films such as Die Hard and Aliens reclassified as 15 from their original 18 certificates. But also, on the other side of things, we occasionally see tougher ratings dished out for films. Watership Down – thank god – is no longer a U in the UK, and those who’ve seen the film may well wonder how it got the softest possible rating in the first place. Meanwhile, as we chatted about here, The Empire Strikes Back...

Even if you walked away from "The Super Mario Bros." disappointed in the flimsy story, there's one element that succeeded in spite of the movie's shortcomings: Jack Black as the diabolical villain Bowser. The "School of Rock" star brought his magnificent voice to the spike-shelled bad guy who has always been tormenting Mario, Luigi, Peach, the Mushroom Kingdom, and beyond. Black even got to belt out a ballad about Bowser's love for Peach in a scene-stealing musical sequence that is easily the best part of the entire movie. Now, he's gearing up to join another promising video game movie.
