DVD Playhouse—November 2011
By Allen Gardner
Tree Of Life (20th Century Fox) Terrence Malick’s latest effort is both the best film of 2011 and the finest work of his (arguably) mixed, but often masterly canon. A series of vignettes, mostly set in 1950s Texas, capture the memory of a man (Sean Penn) in present-day New York who looks back on his life, and his parents’ (Brad Pitt, Jessica Chastain) troubled marriage, when word of his younger brother’s suicide reaches him. Almost indescribable beyond that, except to say no other film in history so perfectly evokes the magic and mystery of the human memory, which both crystalizes (and sometimes idealizes) the past. Like Stanley Kubrick’s 2001, this is a challenging, polarizing work that you must let wash over you. If you go along for the ride, you’re in for a unique, rewarding cinematic experience. Also available on Blu-ray disc.

Chicago – Hardcore fans will know why they decided to release a box set of “Farscape: The Complete Series” in November 2011. The fan favorite was created by The Jim Henson Company and there just happens to be a little Disney movie coming out next week that hopes to return Kermit, Fozzie, and the rest of the gang to international prominence yet again. What about Crichton, Aeryn Sun, and Ka D’Argo? In all seriousness, this unusual tie-in to “The Muppets” may not appeal to many fans of the sure-to-be blockbuster but it will hit its target audience like a freight train. With hours of special features and remastered transfers, it’s a great HD set.
Blu-Ray Rating: 3.0/5.0
The new retrospective documentary about this beloved sci-fi series — “Memories of Moya: An Epic Journey Explored” — will probably be enough for most hardcore fans of the cult hit to pick up the box...

While many film viewers are flocking to theaters to see James Cameron's latest technical triumph, Avatar, some of us prefer to spend the holiday season avoiding the mania and cozying up on the couch, instead.
Topping our wish list this year is Farscape: The Complete Series, which was recently released on DVD. Included are all 88 episodes and 15 hours of bonus footage including the behind-the-scenes special, "Farscape Undressed," which has never been available before now. Farscape is a series that never gets old, and I relish the excuse to watch it again.
Another full series that's recently come available is Stargate Atlantis. While occasionally terrible, Atlantis was usually great, and Joe Flanigan and David Hewlett were great anchors to the show, and are as much fun to watch as you remember.
The fifth season of Lost is also available on Blu-ray, just in time to snap up and watch in...

I’ve always been a huge fan of the Muppets, so the concept of Farscape intrigued me from the start. After all, this is Muppets in space way before Muppets From Space. What’s not to love about that? Luckily, I wasn’t disappointed.
The 26 disc set - released 10 years after the show began - follows John Crighton, an astronaut who accidentally enters a wormhole and finds himself in another galaxy far, far away. Of course, this isn’t just any galaxy. Nope, this galaxy happens to be one in which a huge war is being waged, and John (Ben Browder) finds himself right in the middle of it. While John is trying to figure out what the hell is going on, the ironically named Peacekeepers make things very hard for him and his newfound friends. Among these allies are the lovely Aeryn Sun, D’Argo, Rygel XVI (both a...
