In Alexander Payne's recent dramedy "The Holdovers," the Oscar-nominated Paul Giamatti played a grumpy (but charismatic) teacher, largely hated by the student body. It seems that the students of Starfleet Academy are about to hate him even more, as — according to a new report from Variety — the actor has been cast as the central villain of the upcoming "Starfleet Academy" TV series. The Variety report says that Giamatti will serve as an as-yet unnamed recurring antagonist throughout the "Star Trek" show's first season, and that his character will have "a sinister connection to the past of one of the (yet to be cast) cadets." Variety didn't specify if he'd be playing a human or another alien species.
Speculation may now commence. Will he be playing a bitter former professor? An escaped convict and serial killer who just happens to be the father of one of the main characters? A charismatic cult leader,...

Taking on the role of Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation, Patrick Stewart has reprised his role in the numerous shows and movies within the franchise. Despite his longstanding tenure as Picard, Stewart once questioned if there were any new avenues to explore for the character until he was introduced to the 2022 TV series, Star Trek: Picard.

However, before he officially returned as retired Starfleet Admiral Jean-Luc Picard in the show, rumors arose that he could potentially be replaced by his X-Men co-star Ian McKellen. Stewart promptly dispelled these rumors, stating that the series would not have progressed without him.

In the "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episode "The Way of the Warrior", Captain Sisko (Avery Brooks) finds his station being overrun by Klingons. The Klingons claim to be there to defend DS9 from any potential Dominion threats, but it takes the form of harassing civilians and detaining passing ships against their will. Requiring some insight into the matter, Sisko sends for the only Klingon currently serving in Starfleet: Lieutenant Commander Worf (Michael Dorn) from "Star Trek: The Next Generation."
Worf was at a major crossroads in his life. He was, until recently, serving as the chief security officer on the Enterprise-d, but that ship crashed (during the 1994 film "Star Trek: Generations"), and he wasn't sure what his career might look like moving forward. The Klingons wanted Worf to leave Starfleet and join the Klingon Empire, but Worf didn't like the Empire's new war tactics. Ultimately, Worf decided to stay in Starfleet,...

"Star Trek" and "scary" aren't words that are often associated with each other. After all, it's a sci-fi franchise that's more about philosophy than action. "Trek" focuses on optimism and exploration, in a world where humanity has finally put internecine conflicts aside because we realized we are only one speck of a larger universe.
On the edge of the final frontier, though, all types of stories are possible. "Star Trek: The Original Series" began with "The Man Trap," essentially a monster B-movie in space about a salt-vampire with the mouth of a lamprey. In season 2, the series concocted a whole Halloween special with "Catspaw," about two psychic aliens who have constructed a Gothic castle as a trap for the Enterprise crew.
In the 60-ish years "Star Trek" has existed, it has returned to horror regularly enough to call this a trend. As the omnipotent trickster Q (John de Lancie) warned...

Star Trek is one of the most significant and oldest media franchises out there. It has amassed a massive fan base over the years. However, the franchise faced a major setback in 2002 when Star Trek: Nemesis turned out to be a gigantic critical and commercial flop.
Brent Spiner, who played the role of the android Data in The Next Generation series, 4 films, and in the Picard series admitted that Nemesis‘ failure made him feel that the fans are done with Star Trek.

Star Trek: Nemesis was the fourth and the last film with the cast of The Next Generation series. Additionally, it also had Tom Hardy playing the antagonist opposite Patrick Stewart’s lead. Because "Star Trek" is set in a presumably idyllic future -- when war is at an end, money has been removed from the equation, and diplomatic togetherness rules the day -- one will see few open displays of tribalism or jingoism. No one in "Star Trek" can yell about how much they love their country because, functionally, there are no countries. At least not on Earth. Occasionally, Chekov (Walter Koenig) will express pride, or even smugness, about his Russian heritage, but his attitude couldn't be read as "patriotism." Instead, he has become a smaller part of a large human tapestry, now united and working together to explore the galaxy, expand knowledge, and share ideas.
Perhaps ironically, the widespread multiculturalism of the United Federation of Planets is dressed in military uniforms and sails about the heavens in starships armed with phasers and photon torpedoes. "Star Trek" has all the visual trappings...

The final episode of the third season of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" was called "The Best of Both Worlds", and it is often celebrated as one of the best episodes of the series. Notably, the episode ended on a humdinger of a cliffhanger, revealing that Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) had been assimilated by the Borg. Trekkies had to wait until September 24 to see the conclusion.
This two-parter kicked off a long-standing "Star Trek" tradition of ending every season of every show with a notable cliffhanger. The remaining "Next Generation" seasons always left viewers with something to anticipate through the summer. There was an exception at the end of the first season of "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine," which ended on a usual note, but the show's second season opened with an unprecedented three-part episode, so it feels like it counts.

Patrick Stewart was a hard sell for Star Trek: Picard since he believed that Jean-Luc Picard’s arc was finished after Star Trek: Nemesis. However, Alex Kurtzman, Akiva Goldsman, and other creators of the series convinced him to take on the role in the series. He put a lot of consideration into committing to the project, as evident from a list of three conditions he presented to the creators.

Patrick Stewart was determined not to return to the Star Trek universe after his appearance in the film, Star Trek: Nemesis. He conveyed this to Alex Kurtzman when the latter met with him to pitch a series based on his character Jean-Luc Picard. Kurtzman brought along novelist Kirsten Beyer and screenwriter James Duff to convince Stewart that there was a lot to revisit in Picard’s character.

This article contains spoilers for Star Trek: Picard and WandaVision.
“What is grief, if not love persevering?” asks Vision in an oft-quoted scene from WandaVision. The sympathetic synthazoid intended the question as a validation of his partner Wanda’s feelings of despair after losing so much in Avengers: Endgame. But it’s also been a good way to describe the state of Marvel Television since WandaVision finished its single-season run.
When WandaVision debuted on Disney+ in 2021, the show promised an exciting era for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, still then its apparent prime. Not only did the show focus on a fan-favorite, but little explored character, but it also featured a compelling storytelling style well-suited for the television medium. However, what started as a riff on the history TV sitcoms became a standard superhero battle, complete with Vision battling a duplicate of himself.

Tom Hardy loves to keep his social circle small, and during his initial years in Hollywood, he often didn’t engage in small talk with his fellow costars. This was reflected during his time in Star Trek: Nemesis, which remains his first and only appearance in the franchise, as Hardy would spend most of his time in his trailer when the cameras were off.
As a result, his costar Patrick Stewart thought he might never hear of the Venom star again after Nemesis, as the actor hardly communicated with his costars on set.

One of the very few franchises that have been able to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Star Wars since the dawn of the modern science fiction era in cinema is Star Trek and it has been a battle worthy of being dubbed as the Space Race of Hollywood. However, where Star Wars has remained at the top of its game since the advent of A New Hope, the same cannot be said for its contemporary show, The Next Generation.

The cast of the original series, who then came to the rescue, then makes up for a nice story worthy of being regaled for future generations of Trekkies.

The first season of "Star Trek: Discovery" was swift, action-packed, and all over the place. No sooner had audiences been introduced to Michael Burnham (Sonqua Martin-Green) than a war broke out and her captain was killed. Michael was arrested for insubordination and had to travel on board the U.S.S. Discovery on her way to face a court martial. She soon found that the Discovery hosted an expert mycologist named Lieutenant Stamets (Anthony Rapp), and he had discovered a previously undetected universe-wide network of interdimensional spores. He also found that he -- using tardigrade DNA -- could wire the Discovery's engines into this network and teleport anywhere instantaneously. To heck with Trekking. Now we bamf about the galaxy.
To complicate matters, however, the Discovery miscalculates one of its teleportations and winds up in the notorious parallel Mirror Universe, wherein everyone is evil and Earth is an Imperial conquering force.

One of the biggest queens in all sci-fi is returning to the genre she helped legitimize. As much as fans (rightfully) heap praise on icons such as Sigourney Weaver, Carrie Fisher, and Linda Hamilton, may we never sleep on what Michelle Yeoh has done for science-fiction storytelling over the years. She certainly made her mark in Danny Boyle's "Sunshine," while going above and beyond in recent efforts like "Star Trek: Discovery," "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings," and, of course, "Everything Everywhere All At Once."
Now, she's getting ready to do her thing all over again in "Blade Runner 2099," a sequel series long in the works that finally seems to be inching closer to reality. In Jonathan Frakes' 1996 film "Star Trek: First Contact," the U.S.S. Enterprise travels back in time to the year 2063, the year humanity first invented faster-than-light travel and, almost immediately thereafter, made first contact with an alien species. By "Star Trek" lore, the maiden voyage of the Phoenix, the very first warp-capable ship, caught the attention of a passing Vulcan vessel, causing them to change course, land on Earth, and shake hands with humans. It was the franchise's "Welcome to the neighborhood" moment. It also started a massive utopian rebuilding of Earth, as it had just survived several devastating wars. By "Star Trek" creator Gene Roddenberry's estimation, Earth had to almost destroy itself to have a "moment of clarity." After that, the technological, post-war, post-scarcity, post-capitalist utopia could begin.

When J.J. Abrams' 2009 film "Star Trek" was first announced, it caused something of a fanboy firestorm online. "Star Trek" was largely moribund in the 2000s, presenting the franchise's least popular film, "Star Trek: Nemesis" in 2002, and its least popular series (to date) in "Star Trek: Enterprise." The former only made $67.3 million, and the latter was canceled after four seasons. The world had shifted from gentle stories of futuristic diplomacy to colorful, fantastical post-9/11 revenge fantasies.
Then along came Abrams with his declaration that he'd reboot "Star Trek" with a new cast playing younger, hotter versions of characters Trekkies have loved since the 1960s. His new "Star Trek" was to be supra-high-octane, tripling down on action and drama, and actively eschewing the morality, optimism, and cerebral elements the franchise had previously been known for. Questions immediately began to arise as to whether or not that counted as "proper Star Trek,...

Never bet against James Cameron. The man is responsible for some of the best and highest-grossing blockbusters of the last 40 years, and yet every time he makes a new (and admittedly risky) movie, everyone is skeptical about its chances of success. Granted, Cameron himself saying "Avatar: The Way of Water" had to become one of the highest-grossing movies of all time just to break even does sound ludicrous and nearly impossible, but still! Jimmy C delivers.
Of course, hindsight is 20/20, and it is easy to see now that the "Avatar" franchise just prints money, but before 2009 there were plenty of reasons to be doubtful of a brand-new sci-fi movie making that much money. This means that James Cameron faced naysayers, particularly studio execs who thought they knew how to deliver the highest-grossing movie of all time better than the guy who had done it already.

Trekkies who were there in 1994 may remember the incredibly fast turn-around for "Star Trek: The Next Generation." The final episode of the series, "All Good Things..." aired on May 23, and the first feature film adaptation of the show, "Star Trek: Generations," was released in theaters on November 18. In the intervening six months, Trekkies would be able to tide themselves over with ten new episodes of "Deep Space Nine." Even though a seminal TV series in the "Star Trek" universe was coming to an end, there was no drought to suffer through.

As stated in our previous video, there have been a number of different ones, but nothing stood out more than Resident Evil. In 2002, we were graced with the first in this series. It may not have been the critic’s favorite, but it did well enough at the box office to spawn a sequel. The name of that sequel is Resident Evil: Apocalypse (watch it Here). With a title that big, you would think the filmmakers went for bigger, better and more destructive…right? For the most part, yes and they even packed in some surprises for fans of the series. By the third season of "Star Trek: Picard," Data (Brent Spiner) had already died twice. At the end of 2002's "Star Trek: Nemesis," Data sacrificed his life to blow up a massive Romulan warship and save the USS Enterprise-e from danger. In the first season of "Picard," however, a motivated cyberneticist gathered up particles of Data's exploded body from deep space and used them to somehow reconstitute Data's brain with its memories intact. Data's consciousness was kept alive in a database on a faraway android homeworld until Picard (Patrick Stewart) found it. Data revealed that he was quite finished being alive and asked that Picard unplug his consciousness. Picard agreed and Data died a second time.
In the third season of "Picard," however, it was revealed that the cyberneticist, Dr. Altan Soong (also Spiner), had saved a copy of Data's consciousness and shunted it into a brand new android body.

In the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Data's Day", it was revealed that Data (Brent Spiner) had acquired a pet cat. Likely looking through a database of popular pet names, Data chose the name "Spot" for his orange tabby. Spot was played by a series of cats over his tenure on "Star Trek," including Bud Monster, Brandy, Tyler, Spencer, and Zoe. In the episode "Genesis", Spot devolved into an iguana (don't ask), played by a reptile named Willie. Spot, previously referred to as "he" transformed into a female in "Genesis," likely because the show's writers wanted him to have kittens.
Spot appeared in eight episodes of "Next Generation," had a few scenes in both "Star Trek: Generations" and "Star Trek: Nemesis," and was resurrected for a dream sequence in an episode of "Star Trek: Picard." The cat actor for "Picard" seems to have wanted to remain uncredited. It was...

One of the mandates laid out by actor Patrick Stewart prior to the shooting of "Star Trek: Picard" was that the new Trek series not be a reunion special. He didn't want to return to "Star Trek" after 15 years (his last appearance as Jean-Luc Picard was in "Star Trek: Nemesis" in 2002) just to participate in an insufferably teary series wherein the cast of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" tiresomely get back on the bridge of the Enterprise-d and re-do everything they had done on the celebrated 1987 series. By the time the third season of "Picard" rolled around, the series resoundingly broke that mandate.
In the show's first two seasons, however, the showrunners had to innovate. Picard was no longer a starship captain, and his closest allies were not an official Starfleet crew. Indeed, the main characters on "Picard" were all free agents, with most of them actively resentful of Starfleet.

The Oscar-frontrunning “Maestro” was the big winner at the 11th annual Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards (held February 18 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel). Bradley Cooper’s Leonard Bernstein opus took period/character makeup and special makeup effects. This puts “Maestro” in the Oscar driver’s seat (led by two-time winner Kazu Hiro) against “Poor Things,” “Oppenheimer,” “Golda,” and “Society of the Snow.”
Two non-Oscar competitors, “Saltburn”and “Barbie,” split the other wins: Emerald Fennell’s psychological thriller grabbed both contemporary makeup and hairstyling, while Greta Gerwig’s billion-dollar blockbuster snagged period/character hairstyling.
TV winners, meanwhile, were divided among “The Idol” (contemporary makeup), “The Crown” (period/character makeup), “The Last of Us” (special makeup effects), “The Morning Show” (contemporary hairstyling), and “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story” (period/character hairstyling).

It's worth recalling that "Star Trek: Enterprise" is one of the less popular "Star Trek" shows. "Enterprise" debuted in late September 2001, and was set about a century before the events of the original "Star Trek" series. It followed the adventures of the very first human vessel sent on a long-range space voyage, and took place at a time when a lot of familiar "Star Trek" technologies/notions hadn't been invented yet; there were no tractor beams, no shields, no human-safe transporters, and no Prime Directive. "Enterprise" clearly wanted to revive the old-world frontiersmanship so familiar to fans of the 1966 series.
"Enterprise," however, only lasted four seasons; the three previous Trek shows ran for seven years each. The series was canceled in 2005, and, at the time, it seemed like "Star Trek" was pretty much over and done with. Some might credit the show's writing as a culprit for its unpopularity; it...

The third season of "Star Trek: Discovery" threw the titular ship forward in time by nearly a millennium, landing the U.S.S. Discovery in a time that was very much different from the one they left. In the distant future, the galaxy was recovering from a massive unexplained cataclysm called The Burn, wherein every single starship using dilithium crystals (that is: pretty much all of them) exploded at the same time. The Federation was wounded and shrank to an almost nonexistent entity, and a mercurial, widespread crime ring called the Emerald Chain rose in its place. The Emerald Chain was made up of greedy, vicious capitalists who used violence and slavery to keep their economic chokehold on the quadrant.
One of the characters the Discovery met in this future dystopia was Ryn (Noah Averbach-Katz), an Andorian who reluctantly served as a slave overseer for the wicked Osyraa (Janet Kidder...

The character of Dr. Carol Marcus (Bibi Besch) was introduced in Nicholas Meyer's 1982 film "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan." Dr. Marcus had invented a revolutionary terraforming technology called the Genesis Wave which could be fired into a planet and rearrange the entire world's ecosystem to make it livable. In "Khan," the technology was still untested, and Dr. Marcus was searching for a life-free planet -- sans even scant microbes -- to terraform. With her was her bitter son David (Merritt Butrick) who expressed quite openly how much he hated the formalism and military underpinnings of Starfleet. He would rather carry out scientific experiments with his mother in peace.
It would eventually be revealed that Dr. Marcus was an old lover of Admiral Kirk (William Shatner) and that David was actually Kirk's long-lost son. "Star Trek II" was at least partially devoted to Kirk reconnecting with Dr. Marcus,...

Darth Vader is synonymous with "Star Wars." George Lucas dubbing his space-set saga "The Tragedy of Darth Vader" is obvious retroactive thinking, but looking at how much of the story centers around the villain, is he wrong? It's not often that a character can become a mascot and remain scary, either. Yet somehow, the Dark Lord of the Sith pulls it off.
What about the actor behind Vader's distinctive black, armored visage? There's been many over the years, even if you may not be able to place their faces. Vader's face being seen so little adds to his mystique and further cements him as a character beyond any one performer.
Indeed, Vader is usually played by more than one actor in the very same movie; the role has traditionally been divided between the man wearing the costume and the one providing Vader's voice. Across major "Star Wars" film and TV productions,...

The final episode of "Star Trek: The Next Generation," called "All Good Things..." saw Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) becoming unstuck in time, very similar to what happened in Kurt Vonnegut's novel "Slaughterhouse-Five." Picard finds himself in his present, but frequently traveling uncontrollably to a point seven years in his past, just before the first episode of "Next Generation." Then, just as uncontrollably, Picard would be thrown several decades into his future, now a bearded old man wrestling with a brain ailment. Picard's time jumps, it seems, are a test of Q (John De Lancie), the trickster god intent on gauging humanity's moral worthiness for space travel.
The future sequences would likely be most fascinating to Trekkies. Where would the "NextGen" characters be in several decades? Would the Enterprise-d still be in use? Would their careers change? Would the show's main characters remain friends or drift apart? As it so happens,...

In the "Star Trek: Voyager" episode "Hope and Fear", a visiting alien named Arturis (Ray Wise) helpfully translates some coded information that the U.S.S. Voyager had recently discovered on an abandoned communications network. Arturis unexpectedly decodes the location of a nearby empty Starfleet vessel called the U.S.S. Dauntless, an experimental craft that is equipped with a new kind of warp "slipstream" technology. The Dauntless, unbeknownst to the Voyager crew, was sent specifically out to the Delta Quadrant to bring the Voyager crew back to Earth, and Captain Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) is elated.
It will eventually be revealed, of course, that the Dauntless is an elaborate booby trap constructed by Arturis, who had been secretly hellbent on revenge. His species had recently been assimilated by the Borg, and he blamed Janeway for his planet's destruction. About a year earlier, Janeway had allied with the Borg to pass...

As Star Trek fans, we may quibble about certain aspects of the franchise. We all have our opinions about the best captain or the general ethos of the show. But we can all agree on one thing: Star Trek is about boldly going where no one has gone before. It’s right there at the start of the show!
And yet, for whatever reason, Trek producers seem obsessed with going backwards, excavating the years before the adventures of Kirk and Spock on The Original Series. First we got Star Trek: Enterprise in 2001, then the J.J. Abrams reboot in 2009, then Discovery in 2017, and again with the spin-off Strange New Worlds. In fact, until Discovery jumped ahead 900 years at the end of the second season, the franchise had not moved the timeline past 2002’s Star Trek: Nemesis.

This Star Trek: Picard article contains spoilers.
Do you remember how great it felt when Jean-Luc Picard stepped onto the bridge of the restored USS Enterprise-d, with all the members of his senior staff around him and ready for one last adventure? Remember how much better that was than watching Icheb from Voyager get mutilated or watching Picard ride dune buggies in Star Trek: Nemesis? Patrick Stewart does not.
In a recent interview with the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Stewart talked about an upcoming Star Trek movie centered on at least part of the Star Trek: The Next Generation cast. “I heard only last night about a script that is being written, but written specifically with the actor, Patrick, to play in it,” Stewart told host Josh Horowitz. “And I’ve been told to expect to receive it within a week or so.”

Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” led the 11th annual Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Award nominations.
The final installment of the “Guardians” franchise used over 22,500 prosthetics, 500 wigs and 130 facial hairpieces, breaking the world record for most prosthetics used in a film. It was nominated in special makeup effects, period and character makeup and period hair styling. “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” also landed nods for character hair styling and contemporary makeup.
“Barbie” scored two nominations. Notably, neither that film nor “Guardians” landed on the Oscars makeup and hairstyling shortlist. “Golda,” “Maestro” and “Poor Things” were also in the running for guild nominations.
In the television category, “Dancing With the Stars” dominated with five nominations. Six makeup artists were nominated in best special makeup effects due to a tie.
As previously announced, Michael Westmore, the award-winning makeup artist behind “Rocky” and “Raging Bull,” will be honored with the Vanguard Award.

"Star Trek: Enterprise" soldiered on for four seasons, but really, the death knell happened early in season 2. The season's ratings peaked with its fifth episode, "A Night In Sickbay," at 6.26 million — and apparently, that infamous episode drove off potential audiences since the ratings on "Enterprise" never reached those same heights.
This might be why the tail end of season 2 features an obvious ratings stunt (and one that seemed destined to drive canon-obsessed Trekkies up the wall). "Regeneration" features the Borg as the villains. Contemporary promos warned viewers to, "Prepare for Enterprise's first encounter with — The Borg!" and emphasized how terrifying the cyborg hive mind is. The network definitely wanted people to know the Borg would be showing up ahead of time.
Did it work? Well, "Regeneration" pulled in 4.12 million viewers — the highest ratings since "Future Tense" and higher than the season's remaining episodes. But was this short bump worth it?...

There’ll be some happy holidays on Prime Video in December, as the streamer’s seasonal offerings hope to keep the fires warm in your home this month!
As such, there are quite a few new original holiday movies coming to the service. At the beginning of the month, Eddie Murphy stars in Candy Cane Lane. In this film, the Beverly Hills Cop and Coming to America star plays a determined man who is willing to go above and beyond to win the annual Christmas home decoration contest in his neighborhood – even if it means making a very magical deal.
The DC universe will also be getting festive in December thanks to Merry Little Batman, an animated feature that sees Batman’s son, Damian Wayne, stumble upon a villainous plot on Christmas eve, one that may give him a chance to save the day when his dad isn’t around.

We all know the story of Captain James Tiberius Kirk, who for many is Star Trek’s greatest captain. From a humble upbringing in Iowa, he distinguished himself at Starfleet Academy, even winning the Kobayashi Maru. After serving on the USS Farragut, Kirk took command of the Enterprise, the ship to which he returned time and again, even after being promoted to Admiral. After his presumed death aboard the Enterprise-b, Kirk spent time in the idyllic Nexus before returning with his successor Captain Jean-Luc Picard, who convinced him to come to Veridian III and stop the rogue El-Aurian Dr. Soren.
Kirk and Picard defeated Soren at the cost of the former’s life. “Oh my…” said the dying legend as he got a glimpse of the great beyond awaiting him, where no man had gone before.

In Stuart Baird's 2002 film "Star Trek: Nemesis," Tom Hardy plays Shinzon, a human clone of Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), grown in a lab by the dastardly spies in the Romulan Empire. When their clone plot didn't quite turn out the way that they wanted, the Romulans disavowed Shinzon's existence and sent him as a young boy to be enslaved in a Reman mine. The Remans were a cousin species of the Romulans that had been enslaved for many generations. Shinzon would grow up among the goblin-looking Remans, sharing their plight. Perhaps possessed of Picard's knack for leadership, Shizon would eventually lead a Reman uprising against the Romulans. "Nemesis" was the first time Trekkies ever caught a glimpse of the Remans. Shinzon's massive warship, the Scimitar, would be staffed entirely by Reman officers.

From 1994 to 2002, four feature films were made based on "Star Trek: The Next Generation." Generally speaking, none of the four films was terribly well-received. Stuart Baird's 2002 film "Star Trek: Nemesis" currently holds a 38% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while David Carson's 1994 film "Star Trek: Generations" stands with a 48% approval rating. Jonathan Frakes' 1998 film "Star Trek: Insurrection" fares slightly better with a 55% approval rating, while the same director's 1996 film "Star Trek: First Contact" is far and away the champion, with a 93% approval rating. Rotten Tomatoes, of course, is not meant to be a gauge of factual, unassailable quality, but those numbers do pretty accurately reflect a generally accepted popular opinion among Trekkies.
"First Contact" stands out as the best for numerous reasons. For one, it was a film about the Borg, a soulless species of destructive cyborgs that had long been a favorite villain on "Next Generation." It was...

The writers of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" had a whole panoply of characters to work with, but they clearly liked Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) and Lieutenant Commander Data (Brent Spiner) the best. Of the episodes that focus on single members of the ensemble, Picard and Data seemingly had the most, and were usually given stirringly dramatic stories and no small amount of screen time. Picard was an interesting character as he was stern and resolute, and audiences liked to see his unflappable integrity get tested. Data was an interesting character as he was an android aspiring to be more human, despite having no human emotions. Data looked at humanity objectively, and eager Trekkies likely constructed imaginary conversations in their heads as to how they would explain humanity to Data (should they ever meet him).
Spiner's challenge in playing Data was mustering up emotional moments from within the artificial brain of a machine person.
