Earlier this month, Kevin Smith revealed that he “lost a bet” to his frequent collaborator Jason Mewes and as a result had started writing the script for a third Jay and Silent Bob movie (following Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and Jay and Silent Bob Reboot). On the latest episode of the Fatman Beyond podcast he hosts alongside writer Marc Bernardin, Smith talked a bit more about the movie we’ll call Jay and Silent Bob 3 for now, saying that he’s working to take the script in unpredictable directions. He also said this Jay and Silent Bob movie might be the next film he makes!
Smith told Bernardin and the fans in attendance, “I’ve been working on not just finishing up (The 4:30 Movie), but working on the next one. I’m writing – I didn’t think I would do it for a long time, but I...

Ming-Na Wen, who voiced Mulan in Disney’s animated feature of the same name, is set to narrate a new documentary titled “Pencils Vs Pixels.”
Co-directed by Bay Dariz (“Hypochondriac”) and Phil Earnest, “Pencils Vs Pixels” is a celebration of 2D hand-drawn animation.
The documentary, which will have its world premiere at Annecy International Animation Film Festival next week, will explore the Disney-led 2D animation boom of the late 1980s and early 1990s which was soon eclipsed by the dawn of computer animation. But, as the film shows, a resurgence of 2D animation suggests there is still hope for the medium.
The documentary features interviews with the great and good of the animation world including Pete Docter, John Musker (“The Little Mermaid”), Tony Bancroft (“Mulan”), Jorge R. Gutiérrez (“The Book of Life”), Seth MacFarlane (“Family Guy”), Glen Keane (“Beauty and the Beast”), Tina Price (“Hercules”), Lorna Cook (“Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron...

(The following article contains spoilers for "Clerks III." Please proceed with caution.)
When "Clerks: The Animated Series" debuted on ABC in the year 2000, fans of Kevin Smith's 1994 breakout film had many questions. The first one may have been, "Why did ABC cancel the show before airing all six episodes in their proper order?" Actually, the first question was probably, "Why did ABC agree to do a 'Clerks' show in the first place?" But at some point after that, the fanbase likely wondered if the cartoon was considered part of the View Askewniverse canon or not. Now, 22 years after Dante and Randal's stint on prime time television, they finally have an answer: Kind of.
After the events of the show weren't referenced in the 2006 sequel "Clerks II," Smith has finally acknowledged the ongoing adventures of New Jersey's favorite clerks in his movies thanks to "Clerks III." In the...

In Kevin Smith’s debut feature “Clerks,” way back in 1994, the indie filmmaker told a story of two workaday twentysomethings whose lives were so tragically limited that they not only revolved around retail work, but when the characters did consider life’s big questions and mysteries, their lack of personal experience also left them searching for deeper meaning in pop culture ephemera like “Star Wars.”
Smith was a young filmmaker, naive cinematically but painfully, sometimes embarrassingly earnest in his commitment to capturing the lives of foul-mouthed losers who fill their days with crass sexual humor and existential malaise. Nearly 30 years later — and 16 years after “Clerks II” found his title characters trapped in the same old rut — he’s back with “Clerks III,” a film which doesn’t plumb popular culture for the meaning of life. Instead, it searches for that depth within the original “Clerks” and Smith’s own life story.

This script wasn’t even supposed to be here today! Or any day, really. At the premiere of Clerks III, writer, director and Southwest Airlines extra baggage Kevin Smith offered some details about how the movie almost turned out.
In what Kevin Smith called “a movie about dealing with grief”, the original Clerks III script opened during Hurricane Sandy, which pummeled Smith’s home state of New Jersey (and others) in 2012.
“Dante and Randal were locked in a jail because the original version of Clerks III was the opening of Jay and Silent Bob Reboot where the cops come in and bust Jay and Silent Bob.”
Once the gang is released from prison for safety reasons, they find their beloved Quick Stop has been destroyed. To cope, Randal goes to the movies but the picture he wants to see hasn’t been released yet, prompting him to “[build] a lean-to version of Quick Stop,...

Exclusive: CBS All Access is developing The Multivorce, an adult animated TV series created by Kirker Butler (Family Guy) and Scott Mosier (The Grinch), I have learned. It hails from Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment and CBS TV Studios.
Described by sources as Marriage Story mixed with Rick and Morty, The Multivorce is a half-hour animated comedy about the Gundersons, a seemingly normal American family: mother, father, three kids dealing with the complicated realities of divorce. However, instead of the kids having to spend every other weekend at their father’s shitty bachelor apartment across town, they spend every other weekend with their warrior queen mother in her very exciting (and often very dangerous) kingdom somewhere in the Multivorce.
Butler and Mosier executive produce with Kapital’s Kaplan and Dana Honor.
Mosier produced his first movie, Clerks, at age twenty-one with writer-director Kevin Smith. He went on to produce Smith’s Mallrats,...

Last night's Veep was a format-breaking episode presented as the long-gestating documentary Selina's daughter Catherine had been filming all season. It not only detailed the results of the electoral tie-breaker vote in the House of Representatives, but cast new light on a lot of events we had witnessed earlier in the season. I spoke with Veep showrunner David Mandel about how and why they pulled off the documentary episode, coming up just as soon as I make a call from an elementary school classroom... You set up Catherine doing the documentary early in the season. Did you know then that it would become the frame for a whole episode? David Mandel: Yeah. It's a little chicken and the egg, in terms of which part came first. I think I was partially inspired by some of the episodes like the testimony episode, and the interview episode they've done in the past.

A review of tonight's Veep coming up just as soon as I remember to check for lead... Veep only did eight episodes in its first season (a pattern HBO seems to be employing with most of its new comedies these days), but in every year since, the ninth episode has been a special one(*). Season 2 gave us "Running," where Selina got high on pain meds and said too much about her future election plans. Season 3 had "Crate," with the amazing Selina/Gary bathroom scene.(*) Last year offered up the format-busting "Testimony," which was framed as raw footage of the staff being interviewed about the data breaches. (*) Julia Louis-Dreyfus chose "Running" and "Crate" as her (winning) Emmy submission episodes in those years. (Last year was "Election Night," and — barring something extraordinary in the finale — I'm assuming she'll go with "Mother" this time, with an outside chance of "Congressional Ball." "Kissing Your...

In a surprise announcement, Doha-based beIN Media Group has acquired 100 percent of Miramax, it was announced Wednesday. Selling shareholders include Qatar Investment Authority and Colony Capital. Business is expected to continue as usual despite the change in ownership, according to one insider. The deal marks the latest chapter in Miramax’s storied history. Founded by brothers Harvey and Bob Weinstein, the company became synonymous with the budding independent film scene of the ’90s thanks to movies like “Pulp Fiction” and “Clerks.” It eventually became a formidable awards contender each year, releasing Best Picture winners such as “The English Patient” and.

A couple of years ago The Weinstein Company and Miramax reached a deal that would allow TWC to move forward with sequels to some of their older titles. Unfortunately, nothing really came of that deal and it seemed as if we would never see follow-ups to some of our favorite films. This week, however, things look to be picking up again. With new capital and new investors, several of these long-gestating projects are finally going to head into production.
First up will likely be Rounders 2, which is making a bit of headway. In fact, it appears that Matt Damon is going to reprise his role, if Harvey Weinstein is to be believed.
“I’ve discussed making ‘Rounders 2′ with Matt Damon and I would say that’s going to be instantaneous,” the mogul declared. “The guys [writers David Levien and Brian Koppelman] have a great idea, a way to make it more international where you start the card game in Paris,...

The Weinstein Company and Miramax have agreed to a multi-year, co-production, co-distribution deal that reunites Harvey and Bob Weinstein with the onetime powerhouse company they built, sold for millions to Disney, and reluctantly lost after an ugly divorce from Disney.
Under the new deal, the two companies will collaborate to develop film, television, and stage projects based on some of the most popular properties in the Miramax library, including Good Will Hunting and Flirting With Disaster.
“This is an amazing opportunity to reunite us with the company named after our parents Miriam and Max,” Harvey and Bob Weinstein said in a statement.

While the idea of movies being spun-off and developed into TV shows seems to be a recent and growing trend, Harvey Weinstein had seen this coming years ago. You might not remember, but way back in 2011 it was revealed that he had struck a deal with the new owners of his old studio Miramax, to develop the properties there into sequels and TV shows. That meant titles like “Shakespeare in Love,” “Bridget Jones’s Diary,” “Swingers,” “Clerks,” “Shall We Dance,” “The Amityville Horror” and "Rounders" were all on the table to be played with, so to speak. And hell, just this past spring Robert Rodriguez announced another Miramax title—"From Dusk Til Dawn"—was headed to a TV series. Now another movie from the Miramax catalog is going to the small screen. Deadline reports that James Mangold's "Cop Land" is now being developed for a TV series over at Starz.

It's bizarre to see news that Harvey Weinstein is teaming up with Disney for a project, and a children's book adaptation at that. And apparently no one is more surprised than Harvey Weinstein. In a press release that announced that Weinstein and Disney would be collaborating on an adaptation of the children's book Artemis Fowl, the head of the Weinstein Company was up front about how strange it all seemed: "If you would have told me five years ago I would be producing a project with Disney I would have thought you were crazy,. In case you've forgotten about the bad blood between the mega-powerful producer and the mouse-eared company, back in 1993 Disney bought Miramax, the company that Weinstein had founded with his brother Bob and had by then already turned in an independent film icon with releases like Clerks, sex, lies and videotape and The Crying Game. We’re about to move on to the second round for The Scorecard Review’s ongoing question … Best Year of Movies?

Here are the complete details …
What year had the best movies? It’s a simple question, right? No. You’re wrong. How could you think that it’s simple? How do we break it down? Does every movie count? What year do we start? Settle down. I’ve figured it out.
To decide what year has the best movies, we’re starting with 2010 and working backwards 32 years. Why 32? Because then we can put it in a bracket just like the Ncaa Final Four. For each year,...

For each year, Tsr has listed seven notable films. The key word is notable. Well, actually films would be the key word, but you get my point. Yes, you should consider any and all movies from a given year. I just gave you a reference to some of the key movies in a given year. Why seven? Well, we do Top 7 lists, so that’s why we’ve helped you out with seven suggestions from that year.

Billy Bob Thornton is officially in talks to reprise his role in Bad Santa 2 for The Weinstein Company.
In December, The Weinstein Company hit a deal with Disney-owned Miramax for sequels to a number of major catalog titles including Bridget Jones’s Diary, Copland, From Dusk Till Dawn, Swingers, Clerks, Shall We Dance, The Amityville Horror, Rounders, Shakespeare In Love and of course, Bad Santa.
Thornton made mention of deal at a panel for his SXSW closer, the Willie Nelson documentary The King of Luck but there are still plenty of details to be worked out.
(By the way, The King of Luck, a new documentary about Willie Nelson, received its world premiere last night (March 19) at the South by Southwest festival in Austin Texas — Billy Bob Thornton was a close friend of country music legend Nelson and he made it himself.)
A Weinstein Company spokesperson confirmed to TheWrap:...

Over at Vulture, art critic Jerry Saltz talks about the censorship at the National Portrait Gallery, and ultra-conservative art critic Jed Perl 's protest against the New Museum for exhibiting the Wojnarowicz video. Perl suggests that the New Museum engages in censorship by not showing every artist. Like any gallery could do that.

George Clooney is set to step into Gravity, the space disaster movie that reportedly has some very racy scenes. The price tag on the movie has required a marquee star to jump start production since Robert Downey, Jr. dropped out, and Clooney has the juice.

The ruffled feathers between Miramax and The Weinstein Company seem to have been smoothed, with the news that the two entities are set to embark on a newly reinvigorated beautiful friendship. What that appears to mean immediately is sequels, and lots of them. First out of the gate, if all goes to plan, will be the further adventures of Bad Santa, Shakespeare in Love and Rounders, with Bridget Jones, From Dusk Til Dawn, Swingers, Clerks, and The Amityville Horror all also mooted for future instalments. Scary Movie, Scream and Spy Kids are all continuing to lumber on as franchises already, with Scream 4 arriving earliest on April 15, 2011.The slew of familiar names has to do with the Weinsteins only controlling "library" titles under the new arrangement. Miramax's CEO Mike Lang enthused that "We are thrilled to work with Harvey and Bob Weinstein. There is no better partner to build on these great films,...

As if Dimension’s preponderence for sequel after sequel after Dtv sequel wasn’t bad enough, now it seems Miramax and The Weinstein Company are getting in on the act too, with sequels confirmed for Bad Santa, Rounders and Shakespeare in Love. There’s also talk of sequels to some of my favourite movies series – Clerks, From Dusk Till Dawn and The Amityville Horror.

If we revisit the score cards ... there's been one great From Dusk Till Dawn flick, one crappy one, and one okay one; and there's really never been a good Amityville movie except for Part II, which is delightfully sleazy. So can more sequels fix the problems both of these franchises have? We shall see!

Now, after a failed attempt to buy Miramax back, the Brothers Weinstein are returning to the company they founded… sort of. Hollywoodnews.com: Are you ready for the further adventures of a smitten Shakespeare? How about more card-shark games with the “Rounders” crew?
That seems to be the intention of Miramax films, which today announced a partnership with The Weinstein Company to produce sequels of popular films from the Miramax library. “Shakespeare In Love,” “Rounders” and “Bad Santa” were tapped as the first films to receive the sequel treatment, though “Copland,” “Swingers,” “Clerks” (which already has a sequel!) and “From Dusk Til Dawn” also were mentioned.
More from the release:
“We are very close to these films and the new management of Miramax also feels that we are in the best position to create sequels that are at once worthy and compelling in their own right,” stated TWC’s Harvey and Bob Weinstein. “We look forward to working with Mike and his team on getting these films...

It was sort of heartbreaking earlier in the year when The Weinstein Company failed to purchase Miramax back. It would have been a homecoming of sorts for both companies, and it promised a return to form for Miramax after struggling through the latter part of the 2000s with fewer titles (and far less edge). The two companies have announced the next best thing – a long-term partnership. Unfortunately, that partnership is built upon producing and releasing a blight on the cinematic community. The two companies plan on releasing sequels to long-forgotten titles. Unnecessary sequels are planned for Bad Santa, Rounders, and Shakespeare in Love. There’s something harmless about seeing Billy Bob Thornton back in the Santa suit, but do they expect to nab Matt Damon and Ed Norton back? Do they plan on getting Gwyneth Paltrow back into drag? Those aren’t necessary components, but without those main actor ties, the...

A horror comedy titled Ghost Trek is set to begin shooting a pilot on December 10th. Now, don't be mislead by the title which could be thought to possibly portray a mad ghost haunting the inhabitants of the Enterprise. No, it's about the paranormal underworld and deals in the genre of reality TV. Sounds interesting. Take a look at the release below for more details.
From the Release:
Ghost Trek is a comic horror series pilot based on a paranormal reality show. Ghost Trek follows the Paranormal Underworld Detective Society (Puds) as they investigate haunts across the U.S. and abroad between tanning beds, babes, body-building, and bong hits – all the while risking life and limb confronting the undead.
Notable appearances in the Ghost Trek television pilot are Gia Allemand (ABC’s The Bachelor, Bachelor Pad) recently cast as “Ava Gardner” in Gianni Russo’s $70 million biopic produced by Paramount,...

It’s hard to believe it’s actually happened, but it’s sort of been a long time coming. After surviving a slacking market and budget cuts for this long, Disney has officially shut down Miramax Films. Known for it’s focus on arthouse films, Miramax was founded in 1979 by the Weinstein Brothers, Bob and Harvey, giving several filmmakers the financial nudge needed to make their marks.
The now defunct studio will always be remembered for helping bring films like Clerks, Reservoir Dogs and Boondock Saints to audiences, but not without it’s share of controversy. However, the studio also remains a legendary Oscar powerhouse, evoking memories of the old studio system in it’s run of consecutive Academy Award outings that included The Piano, The Crying Game, The English Patient, Shakespeare In Love and Chicago.

It sprang to life in 1979 as the brainchild of bullish movie producers Harvey and Bob Weinstein, and was named after their parents, but after a slow death from thousands of cuts, Miramax was officially closed today by Disney.During its early years, the Weinsteins scrappily kept the ship afloat, shoved boundaries and helped bring the world the likes of Sex, Lies And Videotape, Clerks, The Piano, Reservoir Dogs, The Crying Game and The English Patient.Rumours of the Weinsteins' bullying tactics and hard demeanor were rife, but they certainly seemed to have a keen eye for talent and an understanding of how to channel that into success. Though it was bought for $70 million by Disney in 1993, the brothers continued to run Miramax with an enviable level of creative control, and pushed their already legendary Oscar-hunting style to new heights with the expanded funding offered by the Mouse House. Miramax Films was born in the late '70s, the child of Harvey and Bob Weinstein. The brothers, chilling in Buffalo, had produced a number of rock concerts over the years, and in 1979 (using their parents' names Miriam and Max) they used their cash to create Miramax Films and feed their love of cinema. The projects that would follow included The Thin Blue Line, Sex, Lies, and Videotape, Pulp Fiction, and Clerks. In 1993, they sold the company to Disney, and in 2005, they left their fully grown company to create a new shingle -- The Weinstein Company. Now they want their baby back?
According to Deadline Hollywood, London sources have told the site that Harvey wants to buy Miramax back from Disney, and is already working towards that goal. Since Disney isn't doing anything with it, assumption suggests that this should be able to move forward. Harvey has already grabbed Miramax...

If you haven't seen the T-shirts being given out to the crew for "Toy Story 3," you're definitely going to want to check out director Lee Unkrich's posts today. They're must-sees Disney and Pixar fans. I almost gave him Twitter Pic of the Day status, too, but Kevin Nealon's shot with Sarah Silverman in a headlock edged them all out. Furthermore, I couldn't pick just one side of one of the shirts to spotlight.
I've also got a nice memory of actor Henry Gibson, who passed away yesterday, thoughtfully tweeted by actor Michael McKean. You can check that out at the top of the Twitter-Wood rundown today, along with a David Slade "Eclipse" tweet, a TwitPic from Peter Facinelli out in the forest, and a note about Tom Arnold's bachelor party. Last week, we posted a story about how 1984 was the best movie year ever when it comes to films you actually want to watch on a rainy day playing hooky from work. Movies like Ghostbusters, Bachelor Party, This is Spinal Tap, Footloose, and The Terminator. Movies that were the exact opposite of the highfalutin' offerings from 1939 -- the year critics always cite as the greatest Hollywood vintage of all time. Don't get us wrong, there were some decent high-brow movies from 25 years ago, too, like Amadeus and The Killing Fields. But mostly we were talking about movies that were, you know, fun. And while some of you agreed with us about 1984's greatness, others were outraged. Apoplectic. Even concerned for our sanity. Some even made cases for other "greatest years". And we listened. That's what we do. So now, we've tallied up your nominees and narrowed it down to your...

Usually we see animated cartoons as a separate entity from live-action movies, or else they spawn a major movie event or franchise. This would be the case with G.I. Joe, which opens this Friday, August 7 in theaters nationwide. However, there are a select number of memorable animated television series that were based on a live-action movie. Having broke the mold in that sense, we decided to come up with our list of the Top Ten Animated Series Based on a Movie. Each of these animated series garnered various levels of success and popularity from various eras on TV nostalgia.

Actor Jason Mewes - famed for his portrayal of stoner Jay in many Kevin Smith movies - is facing a choice between drug-rehabilitation or a spell behind bars. Mewes, 28, appeared before a New Jersey judge who issued the stark choice, after giving himself up on Tuesday and pleading guilty to violating his probation stemming from a 1999 heroin conviction. Clerks star Mewes had been issued an Apb in December 2001 for failing to show up for a court appearance as part of his probation agreement, which had permitted him to carry out his probation in Los Angeles. Other violations include failing to meet with his probation officer, take the required drug tests and undergo counseling, lying to the court, and crossing state lines without permission. And Superior Court Judge Michael D. Farren has now issued the long-haired New Jersey native to enter within 10 days at Discovery House, a drug rehabilitation facility based in Marlboro. He also forbade him from leaving the state until Mewes completed the program. Following Tuesday's guilty plea, the actor left the courtroom without talking to reporters, according to the Associated Press. However, in Mewes' defense, his attorney Peter O'Mara blamed his client's latest legal drama on a "miscommunication" between probation officers in California and Jersey.

Comedy Central has acquired five off-network series, including sketch-comedy cult favorite The Ben Stiller Show, which aired for one season on Fox in 1992-93. Stiller is the only non-animated program in the group, which includes Dilbert, Gary & Mike (both from UPN), Clerks (ABC) and Undergrads (MTV). The cartoon quartet will rotate inside a new late-night programming block starting next month. "We want to rebuild the animation block we had before," said Bill Hilary, executive vp and general manager at Comedy Central, referring to the network's past pairing of Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist and The Critic. "Our audience really loves this genre."...
