Low budget but charming comedy
yakikorosu1 December 2007
This charming comedy tracks the lives of several romantic pairs through trials and tribulations. The main focus of the story is a young soldier with a good heart but little ambition and his fiancée, who feels torn when a charming and sophisticated intellectual enters her life and sweeps her off her feet. There are also several side stories, also all dealing with relationships, most significantly the soldier's mother, whose comfortable but unexceptional marriage is threatened when a past love returns to her life. The other stories are mostly there for comic effect, and some, particularly the tale of the elderly man determined to reach his long-lost wife in a very... creative... way, are very funny and even moving. I very much enjoyed the stories, though a weird subplot about a visiting Japanese businessman who acts sort of like a deus ex machina for one story seemed somewhat odd and tacked-on.

The film is very low-budget and simple, film-making-wise, but pretty well acted. The actress who plays Olga does a particularly nice job.

I would recommend it to those interested in a relationship comedy with some serious moments as well. There's nothing really deep being explored here, but there are plenty of charming moments and even some surprises in the resolutions of the stories.

For parents, there is brief partial female nudity in a comedic scene and some implied sexuality and one fight scene towards the end.

Love triangles
tim-vanlaere21 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Emotional rollercoaster, difficult to watch. Recommended if you like drama.

With the bride at the altar, with unwashed hair and still semen in her from the prior night with someone else as her fiancée...

I have a difficult time understanding the moral or "beauty" of the story. But I was recommended it as it was "a movie we grow up with".

It displays men as very replacable, annoying and miserable beings. Where the women are suffering in silence but have not other prospect in life. And make every effort to be noticed and swept up and away at the first shimmering of something else. Without a single display of loyalty and an incredible ability to lie and pretend.

I am trying to find meaning in it, and perhaps there is something as "you only have one love" and "love never dies" - which has been the theme in more of this genre of movies. (where men seem to wander or go astray and come to terms or get their karma coming to them)

But it's the first movie or this era where it's so blatantly open and portrayed explicitly without consequences. And the failed uninteresting loyal male has to accept his fate.

Dedication
EXTSOAK27 April 2024
The movie is in short about dedication and shows it off from different angles and perspectives. The movies distinguishes between dedication, dreaming and intelligence in a quite subtle but noticable manner. I honestly hate the moment of the spoiled richkid getting his wishes over the dreaming hard worker, due to his dedication. That was the main thing you can tell about this movie, the rest of this review is gonna probably just some spaceholder to get to the character minimum requirement of 600 words which now is forced. You can actually stop reading now. The main theme of this movies is dedication.

charming and meaningful comedy

I saw this film and became a fan of the filmmaker astrakhan. A real and poignant comedy.

Shot in St. Petersberg at a time of change and uncertainty, the optimism of "Everything will be OK" and the romantic but real feeling of the film are uplifting.

It's not comedy. Capitalist propaganda of supremacy rich classes under the poors.
posin-9972019 October 2020
The film is typical capitalist propaganda of the 90th for former USSR citizens. The film ground privatization and supremacy of new Russian rich and their rights to take former societal property. The film was shooted from a rich snobs' point of view. All rich persons are lucky, fine, and smart. All poor persons are stupid and losers. All riches are shown as superior in all cases. All poors are absolutely miserable. A beauty chooses a rich and handsome guy, of course.
