Pete Kozachik, a visual effects and stop-motion artist whose work on acclaimed animated films by Tim Burton, Henry Selick and others brought recognition and an Oscar nomination, died Sept. 12 at his California home in the Bay Area following a years-long battle with aphasia and primary progressive aphasia. He was 72.
His death was first announced on Tucson’s NBC affiliate station Kvoa. Kozachik attended high school and college in Tucson, and his brother Steve Kozachik is vice mayor of the city.
While best known for his Oscar-nominated work on 1993’s The Nightmare Before Christmas, directed by Selick and produced by Burton, Kozachik launched his career in 1984 on the sci-fi film Dreamscape starring Dennis Quad. In ’86 he was the visual effects camera operator on the notorious Howard the Duck, going on to build a solid roster of credits in the late 1980s and early 1990s, including Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home,...

Like most people, I have a great reverence for Brendan Fraser. I have no qualms admitting "Encino Man" is one of my earliest comfort films, as is "Airheads," and I'm a staunch defender of his performance in Henry Selick's "Monkeybone." Yes, I too would also "honk if I'd rather be watching the 1999 cinematic masterpiece 'The Mummy' starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz," upon seeing the viral SuperYaki bumper sticker in the wild, but I can also sing the dolphin song from "Bedazzled" by heart. Brendan Fraser is a performer I have loved for so long I cannot remember when he wasn't one of my favorite actors. Knowing that this multi-faceted performer has won the Oscar for Best Actor feels like something worth celebrating with the same intensity as watching the underdog team win the Super Bowl, but Fraser's win comes wrapped in the violent, grotesque embrace of Darren Aronofsky's "The Whale.

There was a time when it seemed like you could set your watch to a new Brendan Fraser hit movie coming out every couple of years. But after a great run in the 1990s, the star of "George of the Jungle" and "The Mummy" had a curious box office disaster appear out of nowhere.
Heading into the new millennium, Fraser had just wrapped the action spectacular "The Mummy" which grossed more than 155 million, and the supernatural romantic comedy "Bedazzled" which raked in more than 90 million worldwide. And just when it looked like anything he touched would turn to box office gold, "Monkeybone" happened.
Twentieth Century Fox shelled out 75 million and teamed Fraser with "The Nightmare Before Christmas" director Henry Selick for a strange dark comedy that blended animation and live action. But production and promotion gaffes plagued the film from the start. The movie ended Fraser's impressive run of profitable hits,...

By qualifying for Best Animated Feature, A24’s “Marcel the Shell with Shoes On” became the first stop-motion/live-action hybrid to enter the Oscar race. Now it could make history as the first hybrid nominee. If nominated along with “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” — the favorite in the category — and Henry Selick’s “Wendell & Wild,” this would be another milestone for the technique, tying the record for most stop-motion Best Animated Feature nominees set in 2013, when “Frankenweenie,” “ParaNorman,” and “The Pirates! Band of Misfits” all vied for the award.
“What constitutes animation as it relates to the Oscar qualification is an important discussion,” director Dean Fleischer Camp told IndieWire. “We got to show the process. What some people don’t understand is how animated it is. They think it’s a stop-motion character and some objects composited into a live-action world. Elon Musk has a plan to “destroy the bots” of Twitter…but that doesn’t mean he can tame the trolls. In the same week that Elon Musk announced Twitter would be charging to become and remain verified and earn that precious little blue checkmark, users have started effectively exposing the faults in a rather curious and comical way.
The problem arises in that Twitter users desiring the coveted blue checkmark could pay for one, pass themselves off as celebrities and cause general havoc on social media. As reported by The New York Times, “Mr. Musk’s new Twitter Blue subscription service, which will give subscribers the check mark next to their username, is aiming to begin on Nov. 7 in the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, according to internal documents seen by The Times. Subscribers would not need their identities authenticated to get the check mark, the documents suggested.

In the same way that people often call all forms of disposable paper tissue "Kleenex" or medical adhesive bandages "Band-Aids," Tim Burton has permeated the subgenre of spooky animated films so deeply, he is often misattributed as the director of films actually helmed by Henry Selick. A lifelong animator, Selick's directorial debut was "The Nightmare Before Christmas," a now-classic stop-motion animated musical dark fantasy filled with memorable characters that have since adorned just about every merchandisable product available at Hot Topic stores. The story was based on a three-page poem of the same name by Tim Burton, who had broken onto the scene with the stop-motion short film "Vincent," featuring horror icon Vincent Price.
Burton had approached Selick about turning his poem into a feature film for Disney, but after the company deemed it "too weird," he was fired by Disney and went off to direct the highly profitable "Beetlejuice" and "Batman.

Although he had a few roles under his belt already, Brendan Fraser became a massive movie star in 1999 thanks to "The Mummy." The film launched him to superstardom — Fraser portrayed a tough goofball with a glorious mop of hair, a chiseled jaw and had a terrific sense of humor. Plus, he was a genuinely compelling performer. The actor continued to work steadily, but the charm of "The Mummy" was hard to match again.
A few years later, the actor disappeared from the limelight; he had to put his career on pause due to a series of issues. Among other things, Fraser had to undergo several surgeries due to performing stunts and couldn't work at full pace again (discussed in more detail below).

The only other actor who has spent more time in a makeup chair than Doug Jones might possibly be his "Hellboy" co-star Ron Perlman. A look back at both actors' respective filmographies fids a litany of creatures and nonhuman characters that often require a lot of fur, tendrils, and other creative prosthetics. It's a credit to both men that they have been able to provide expressive and empathetic performances through enormous silicone headpieces and masks that often block out their hearing and vision.
Jones in particular so often plays creatures that it's a rare treat to see him without makeup. Jones currently plays the gentle Kelpien Capt. Saru in "Star Trek: Discovery," and has previous played a clown in "Batman Returns," kangaroo people in both "Tank Girl" and "Warriors of Virtue," a yeti in "Monkeybone," the Silver Surfer in "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer," and several notable creature...

Stop-motion filmmaking auteur Henry Selick is back in action with his first feature since "Coraline" — the Netflix film "Wendell and Wild," based on the unpublished book he co-wrote with Clay McLeod Chapman. The man who gave us "The Nightmare Before Christmas," "James and the Giant Peach," and "Monkeybone" joined forces with maverick filmmaker Jordan Peele on the project, just before Peele became an Oscar-winner and changed the horror game forever with "Get Out."
"Wendell and Wild" is about an angry young Black punk 13-year-old girl named Kat ("Ironheart" and "This is Us" star Lyric Ross) who crosses paths with the two titular demons who need her help escaping the hellish underworld and crossing over into the land of the living. Pairing up Selick with Peele seems like a no-brainer for a successful horror story, but before the success of "Get Out," the combination was still a risk. According to a...

Despite his status as an icon of animation, it's weird to think that Henry Selick hasn't directed a movie since 2009's "Coraline." That isn't for a lack of trying on his part -- projects like "The Shadow King" were started, but eventually died out during development for some reason or another. Because of this back-and-forth from production to cancellation, it's nice that Selick is finally returning to the director's chair, and with the help of Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele, nonetheless.
Back in April 2022, /Film and other outlets were invited to the set of "Wendell & Wild." The film, which centers around the titular demon brothers (Key as Wendell and Peele as Wild) trying to get a young girl named Kat (Lyric Ross) to summon them into the human world, is slated to stream exclusively on Netflix this October. When it comes to stop-motion animated features, Henry Selick is in a league all his own. The acclaimed director of beloved films like "The Nightmare Before Christmas," "James and the Giant Peach," and "Monkeybone," is back with his first feature since "Coraline" -- the Netflix film, "Wendell and Wild." Based on Selick and Clay McLeod Chapman's unpublished book of the same name and from a script co-written by Selick and Jordan Peele, "Wendell and Wild" sees two titular demon brothers trying to convince a 13-year-old girl named Kat to summon them back into the land of the living. In the five years since his directing debut on "Get Out" in 2017, Jordan Peele has gone from one half of a beloved comedic duo to someone whose mere involvement with a project is immediately one of its biggest selling points. So it is with "Wendell and Wild," a stop-motion animated feature that marks the return of "The Nightmare Before Christmas" helmer Henry Selick in his first directorial effort since 2009's "Coraline," with Peele serving as both a co-writer and producer on top of lending his voice to the film.
"Wendell and Wild" reunites Peele with his "Key and Peele" co-creator Keegan-Michael Key as the voices of the titular characters, a pair of wily demons who convince 13-year-old human Kat Elliot (Lyric Ross) to help them enter the Land of the Living so that they might wreak havoc down upon our world. HBO Max is continuing to pull from Warner Bros.’ incredible back catalogue of movies, with August bringing a huge number of new titles to the streaming service. With over 130 new pieces of content, the list of upcoming arrivals encompasses classic films of all kinds, from Oscar winners to comedies, horrors to family pics and, of course, tons of blockbusters.
A highlight for many users will probably be the glut of Batman films coming to HBO Max at the start of the month. It’s August 2020 and that can only mean one thing: HBO Max is about to enter Lovecraft Country.

Brendan Fraser seemed on the verge of being a major movie star in the late 1990s. But it never came to be. We look at why…
I remember going in to watch 1994’s Airheads at the cinema, at the time tempted to do so more by the name of Michael Lehmann on the end credits than Adam Sandler and Brendan Fraser above the title. Steve Buscemi’s presence helped too, of course. But Lehmann had, after all, come to the project off the back of the unfairly maligned Hudson Hawk, and also, this is the man who gave the world Heathers. Can’t grumble with that.
I’d not seen Brendan Fraser on the big screen before, although even by this stage, he’d earned some currency. Encino Man – California Man in the UK – had overcome savage reviews to prove a decent hit. School Ties, that I...

It’s been nine years since Rose McGowan saw herself on a now-infamous cover of Rolling Stone magazine — airbrushed, posing alongside her “Death Proof” co-star Rosario Dawson, the two naked women covered only by bullets — when she decided to leave Hollywood.
“I was like, ‘Holy god, what have they done to you,'” said McGowan in a conversation with SeriesFest’s Randi Kleiner, which was part of Ifp Film Week in Brooklyn.

McGowan said seeing the cover was the moment she decided to disengage from Hollywood after 15 years as a successful actress. Once in a while she’d show up “at some weird red carpet, where they’d make me look like a Trump beauty pageant winner” — but McGowan says those high-profile events were simply cover, while she was hard at work on a number of...

Chicago – The season finale of TNT Network’s “The Last Ship” was this previous Sunday (Sep. 11, 2016), and as finales tend to do, there were surprises. One of these shocks was the death of the character Roberta Price, the regional leader of the Deep South. The actress who portrayed her, Lucy Butler, was a surprised as anyone else, and talked to HollywoodChicago.com regarding the transition.
“The Last Ship” is a popular action-drama show on TNT, and has been renewed for Season Four in 2017. The premise is in the title, when a worldwide epidemic has wiped out 80% of the world’s population, a lone naval destroyer floats with 218 souls on board, working on a cure. “The Last Ship” features Eric Dane as Captain Tom Chandler, Rhona Mitra as Dr. Rachel Scott and Adam Baldwin as Captain Mike Slattery. Lucy Butler portrayed tough-as-nails regional director Roberta Price on the ship, a politician with an agenda.

If you haven’t thought of “Monkeybone” in a while, allow Rose McGowan to refresh your memory — and reveal the movie it could have been. The actress, who co-starred in the fantastical 2001 comedy alongside Brendan Fraser and a slew others, took to Instagram to describe how the critical and financial failure could have been something else entirely had its original director not been fired.

“The movie would’ve been incredible (at least the underworld part) if the men at 20th Century Fox (the suits) hadn’t fired the director, a true artist, Henry Selick 1/2 the way through filming,” she says, calling his dismissal a “profoundly stupid move.” She notes that Selick had already directed “James and the Giant Peach” and later went on to make “Coraline,” both of which she calls “tremendous pieces of work.

Chicago – Thomas Haden Church has the recognizable name, and a long career of character roles in comedy and drama. His laid-back persona gets a bit more intense as a conflicted father in the new film “Max,” about a military dog who comes home to an uncertain future with a grieving family.
What may look like a standard family film is actually an exploration of the mourning and the healing process, and the waste of war. Church is Ray Wincott, an early 1990s “Desert Storm” veteran, who sees his son Kyle (Robbie Arnell) follow in his Marine Corp footsteps to the Afghanistan conflict. One of the Kyle’s duties is to care for Max, a German Shepard who sniffs out bombs in the region. When Kyle is killed in action, Max is sent back to the Wincott family to get over his companion’s demise, but will only respond to Ray’s other son,...

Henry Selick will direct A Tale Dark & Grimm.
The Nightmare Before Christmas director has joined FilmNation's live action adaptation of Adam Gidwitz's book, reports Screen Daily.
The film will be based on the retellings of the most dark and disturbing of the Grimm Fairy Tales.
"I remain completely enraptured by Adam Gidwitz's marvellous book A Tale Dark & Grimm," said Selick.
"It's a hilarious, deeply inventive tale about survival in the world of fairy tales and what it takes to forgive one's parents."
Selick has also worked on Neil Gaiman's Coraline, James and the Giant Peach and Monkeybone.
He entered a four-film deal with Disney and Pixar in 2010, but the contract was terminated before the first movie was completed.
Selick has most recently been working on The Shadow King, which was originally intended to be one of his Disney films.

The brilliant Henry Selick is to take on A Tale Dark & Grimm...
Henry Selick is one of the planet's most underappreciated movie directors. Given that he's directed Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas, the wonderful James And The Giant Peach and the flat-out brilliant Coraline, you'd think that news of a new project of his would be reason to bring out the marching band. But sadly, news that he's taking on Adam Gidwitz's A Tale Dark & Grimm appears to have been met with not too much noise. Thus, we intend to make some.
Selick actually has two films on the go at the moment now. The first is The Shadow King, a stop motion project that was in development at Disney, but has now been picked up by K5 International. Selick has written the script for this one too, a story of a...

Henry Selick is primarily known for his work in the field of stop-motion animation, having previously directed features like Coraline, James and the Giant Peach and The Nightmare Before Christmas, but now, for the first time since 2001's Monkeybone, the filmmaker is ready to dive back into the world of live-action. According to Screen Daily, Selick is now attached to direct A Tale Dark & Grimm, a new feature based on the book by author Adam Gidwitz and illustrator Hugh D'Andrade. A twist on some the most beloved classic fairy tales, the book follows Hansel and Gretel as their go from their own Grimm tale to eight others. Along the way they must face off against witches, dragons and demons, and in doing so learn the real truth behind the myths. Selick has co-written the screenplay with writers John W Mann and Jon Gunn. Said the director in a statement, "I...

Filmnation has set Henry Selick (Coraline, The Nightmare Before Christmas) to direct A Tale Dark & Grimm. Based on Adam Gidwitz' book of the same title, A Tale Dark & Grimm is said to be just as funny as it is scary. It's about two kids who leave their own dark fairy tale and find themselves in eight other equally scary stories - it highlights just how gruesome the original fairy tales were written. Selick helped adapt the screenplay along with Jon Gunn and John W. Mann (the writing duo also wrote the upcoming movies B.O.O., Magic 8 Ball and The Nutcracker).
While Selick is best known for his animated work (including James and the Giant Peach), he has directed a live-action movies before - the Brendan Fraser-starrer Monkeybone.
Interesting, the illustrator for the book, "A Tale Dark & Grimm" said he was instructed to make the artwork "Coraline-ish.

With his resume, cover letter, jelly beans and copy of "Monkeybone" in hand, Brendan Fraser is off to win the hearts of his fans via Kickstarter. Or at least he is in this new video from The Onion. America's Finest News Source is once again taking aim at the crowdfunding site. Kickstarter's track record -- some with happy endings (we're looking at you, "Veronica Mars" and Zach Braff), others not so much -- has made it one of the web's most buzzed about sites, not to mention an easy target for publications like The Onion. Case in point, their latest faux-news story, starring a dumbed down Brendan Fraser with a regrettably small grasp for how crowdfunding operates. The story follows Fraser's misguided media blitz as he attempts to fund a nameless, plot-less project that he promises will be "a good, fun movie." Were the project real, we only hope it...

Brendan Fraser needs USA to start airing "Encino Man" more often ... because his expenses outweigh his income by so much ... he's in the red each month to the tune of $87,320.01 ... TMZ has learned.Fraser filed docs in Connecticut recently as part of an ongoing battle with his ex-wife to lower his alimony payments, which currently sit at $50,000/month. To prove his financial situation ain't what it used to be, Fraser listed his monthly income and expenses .... and it's not pretty.

Henry Selick really doesn't get the credit he deserves. Most people still seem to think that Tim Burton directed The Nightmare Before Christmas, and Selick's other films (which have been strong, other then the abysmal MonkeyBone) didn't have the impact that they should have. Despite the fact that stop motion films usually do decent business, Disney canned Shademaker, his next planned project. He isn't taking that lying down, though, because he's now working on a film called The Shadow King, and what we've seen has been awesome.

"The Guilt Trip" is a far cry from working choreography on "The Flintstones." Nothing against the John Goodman not-really-a-classic, but it's remarkable that Anne Fletcher, director of "The Guilt Trip," is even in the position to direct films that don't, you know, include dance sequences.
After a career in choreography -- working on a wide range of films, from "Boogie Nights" to "Monkeybone" -- Fletcher directed the dance-themed, Channing Tatum-starring film, "Step Up." Her next move was key ... or, as Fletcher puts it, she "would have been screwed" if her next directing gig had been another dance movie. It wasn't; the box-office success of "27 Dresses" led quickly to the behemoth that became "The Proposal," a film that Fletcher calls her "gold ticket."
Well, that golden ticket has led her to Barbra Streisand and Seth Rogen.

In 2010 it was announced that Henry Selick, the beloved director of “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” had left Laika Studios, the Portland, Oregon-based animation studio run by Nike co-founder and chairman Phil Knight. Knight had hired Selick back in 2002 to help transition the studio from Will Vinton Studios (home of the California Raisins, among others) into a 21st century powerhouse. Selick’s first animated feature, the gorgeous “Coraline,” was released in 2009, but just a year later Disney and Pixar came courting and Selick packed his bags. Things have been quiet for a little while but some details have started to emerge about his Pixar project, while Disney has signed him on to a highly coveted property.
First, the Pixar stuff – when Selick was hired by Pixar, many thought it would simply be the studio’s stop-motion animation division, housed on the same sprawling campus as Pixar proper. But Selick has control...

Arrow Video have released details of their forthcoming DVD release of the highly regarded, but little seen (at least uncut) slasher starring Caroline Munro (Maniac), Slaughter High and Blu-ray release of the former video nasty directed by the Texas Chainsaw Massacre’s Tobe Hooper, The Funhouse – both of which are released this month.

Not every movie can be a hit, and some blockbusters offer far more than their big budget and failure to dominate the box office might suggest. Here's our look at ten fascinating failures...
There are blockbuster movies that fail for good reason. Jonah Hex, Town & Country, Catwoman - they deserved their fate, really. In fact, there are films that made bucketloads of cash that didn't deserve their success, too. You can probably name a few of them quite easily.
But what we're interested in here are the blockbuster movies that struggled to make an impact, yet have something about them that makes them worthy of discussion many, many years later. Some of the films we're about to discuss are outright box office flops. Some simply didn't meet commercial expectations. All of them, to some degree, disappointed the studios that backed them.
Some of these aren't, all in honesty, particularly good.

Brendan Fraser, to me, is a complete Hollywood mystery. He's got as many flops and he does blockbuster successes, and there's no real pattern to them. Just when you've given him up for dead again, after another Dudley Do-Right or Monkeybone, he strikes back with another Mummy film or Journey to the Center of the Earth. And yet, like few actors who have managed five $100 million movies, it seems we know very little about Fraser. He's Canadian. He seems like a really nice guy. And he has a terrible agent. He also seems like less an actor than a place-filler, although I've always enjoyed him in his comedic roles (Blast from the Past, Encino Man and even Bedazzled.
And just as we were about to give up on him again after the failures of the terrible Extraordinary Measures and Furry Vengeance, Fraser now has four movies in the works, including...

Our favorite actors come and go as newer and younger stars replace them. This process happens every 10 to 20 years, while some actors continue to hold on strong well into their death. What we’ve got for you is a list of actors and actresses that were huge in the 1990s, but that are now ever hardly seen, and what movie killed their career. The list of actors and actresses we have for you below appear in random order, as the amount of “Fail” in each one of them is too great to rank.
Tom Sizemore
This guy was huge in the 1990s, no doubt. If you can think of a big movie from the 90′s, Tom Sizemore was probably in it. Since many of us have forgotten about the dreadful live-action/stop-motion animated movie Monkeybone, you may not remember that John Turturro was the voice of the titular mischievous monkey. Thankfully, he's now putting his vocal talents to much better use as Disney has revealed via SlashFilm that the actor is voicing a pivotal character in this summer's Pixar sequel Cars 2. Though he's had plenty of experience with transforming cars, this time Turturro will be dealing with a slew of race cars as he'll be voicing Francesco Bernoulli, an Italian racecar who becomes Lightning McQueen's chief European rival. More video below! Here's your first look at Francesco Bernoulli voiced by John Turturro in Cars 2: Francesco grew up in the shadow of the famous Monza race course in Italy where he and his friends would sneak onto the track and race the famous Pista di Alta Velocita bank turn.

Until 2009’s Oscar-nominated Coraline, director Henry Selick had problems finding a story worthy of his groundbreaking, immaculately realized stop-motion animation. The storyline was the weakest part of his directorial debut, The Nightmare Before Christmas; 2001’s Monkeybone struggled to find a consistent tone or a proper emotional center. And between the two, he adapted Roald Dahl’s children’s book James And The Giant Peach, gleefully experimenting with form and style, but producing a film that’s more quaint curiosity than anything else. Dahl’s morbid dryness has always been difficult to adapt to the screen, and the directors ...

Is it sad that writing "lost," the word, this week causes me to pause for five seconds? It's written on my shirt right now, and I'm not even having positive or negative pausing, it's just wasting time. Hell, I don't think about Jesus on Christmas this much. What the hell is wrong with me?Also, I have some "Journey to the Center of the Earth 2" news for you, but I'm guessing you Care very little. Why? Because the Brendan Fraser of "Gods & Monsters" and the first "Mummy" flick is gone. I'd even take the "Monkeybone" Fraser over "Furry Vengeance" Fraser. The worst part about losing Brendan, a Fraser I could watch (take That Kelsey Grammer!) is that he's surrounded himself with other people who have embraced mediocrity for money. Brendan Fraser may not return for Warner Bros’ 3D sequel to Journey to the Center of the Earth. Instead the studio is moving quickly to rework the story centered around Josh Hutcherson who played Fraser’s nephew in the original.
According to Deadline, Fraser’s schedule is a potential issue, especially since WB is already jumping into pre-production on the follow-up for a September 25, 2011 release. He’s also loyal to Eric Brevig who will not return to direct due to his continuing work on WB’s live-action/CGI hybrid film Yogi Bear.
Instead the studio is eying director Brad Peyton who recently finished the sure-fire instant classic Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore (converted to 3D, of course).
Would anyone honestly lament the loss of Brendan Fraser? I understand he’s a more “bankable” star than Hutcherson, but I was under the impression the original is more about the...

The Brendan Fraser disaster opened with a Monkeybone-like $2 million on Friday to land in fifth. At least some people still have standards. The top-five ahead.
