The Mexican captain interrogating John Grady was described by McCarthy as being effeminate and effete. He (the captain) was referring to Jimmy Blevins' not having pubic hair (hair on his genitals). That is why an embarrassed John Grady said "I wouldn't know anything about that. That don't interest me." As I recall, the captain 'colored' (blushed) at John Grady's remark. This could mean that the captain was juxtaposing the assertion that the Blevins was a murderer but not yet in puberty. It also could demonstrate that the captain had a sexual interest in Blevins, or both. (answer provided via MCCarthyite)
