Actress Scarlett Johansson finally escaped our long-running photo gallery of the greatest living actresses to never receive an Oscar nomination. And she did it in grand style by picking up two for her 2019 films “Marriage Story” and “Jojo Rabbit.” Just recently, Kirsten Dunst had been in our gallery for years and then earned her first Academy Award bid for “The Power of the Dog.” Emily Blunt was finally nominated for “Oppenheimer” years after winning her first SAG Award for “A Quiet Place.”
In 2014, “Friends” star Jennifer Aniston looked like a lock to receive her first Academy Award nomination for “Cake,” following citations at the Golden Globes, SAG, and Broadcast Film Critics. Yet on Oscar morning, the Emmy-winner was left out. Aniston’s “Friends” costar and fellow Emmy-victor Lisa Kudrow found herself in a similar situation when she received an Independent Spirit Awards nomination for “The Opposite of Sex” yet came up short at the Oscars.

Fans of Judy Blume’s “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret.” had to wait more than 50 years to see the classic children’s novel transferred to the big screen, but their patience was finally rewarded this spring. Written and directed by Kelly Fremon Craig (“The Edge of Seventeen”) and featuring such A-listers as Rachel McAdams and Kathy Bates, the faithful film adaptation boasts an awe-inspiring Rotten Tomatoes critics score of 99% and was even described by its source’s author in a “Today” interview as “better than the book.” As the 2024 movie awards season begins, its best shot at a Golden Globe nomination lies with its 15-year-old star, Abby Ryder Fortson, who would be the fifth youngest contender in the history of her category.
At this point, Fortson is hovering directly outside of Gold Derby’s predicted six-person Best Comedy/Musical Actress lineup with the support of just over a quarter of our oddsmakers.

Christina Ricci should be considered a potential surprise Emmy winner in the Best Drama Supporting Actress category for her terrific performance as Misty in “Yellowjackets,” created by Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson. The gripping 10-episode first season with two parallel storylines— one, a high school girls soccer team struggling to live in the Canadian wilderness after a plane crash, and two, those survivors decades later navigating their way through the world as adults — was a critical hit for Showtime this past year. The series netted seven Emmy Award nominations, including Best Drama Series and Best Drama Actress for Melanie Lynskey as Shauna, but Ricci is the clear stand-out in an outstanding ensemble cast. As Lorraine Ali says in The Los Angeles Times, “Ricci [kills] in ‘Yellowjackets,’ figuratively and literally.” Why might Christina Ricci win the Emmy? Below are my top four reasons.

Before Christina Ricci starred on Showtime’s Yellowjackets as Misty Quigley — an eager-to-please high school equipment manager turned crafty and cunning nurse — she made her first foray into television as a guest star on David E. Kelley’s legal dramedy Ally McBeal.
Twenty years ago, Ricci appeared in seven episodes of the Fox show’s fifth and final season as Liza Bump, a cutthroat lawyer who faces off in court against the attorneys of the Cage & Fish firm and ends up marrying Greg Germann’s Richard Fish in the series finale. The actress already had a healthy film career at that point, with her iconic role as Wednesday Addams in The Addams Family as well as performances in Casper, The Opposite of Sex and Sleepy Hollow. And she did it in grand style by picking up two for her 2019 films “Marriage Story” and “Jojo Rabbit.” Will Kirsten Dunst be the next lady to leap off this gallery into an Academy Awards nomination soon? She has been receiving rave reviews for her latest film “The Power of the Dog” from Jane Campion.
Also in our photo gallery, we include Emily Blunt, who won her first SAG Award in 2019 but also still couldn’t gain attention from Oscar voters. She took home the trophy in the supporting category for “A Quiet Place” but also had a potential bid as a lead actress for “Mary Poppins Returns.”

One of the most iconic movies to come out in what many critics have hailed as the best year for movies in modern times, 1999’s “The Matrix” was not just an unexpected box office hit, but an awards favorite as well. The science-fiction classic won all four of the Academy Awards for which it was nominated: Best Film Editing, Best Sound, Best Sound Editing, Best Visual Effects. Its four total awards at the 2000 ceremony placed “The Matrix” just one behind the night’s biggest winner, Best Picture champ “American Beauty.”
Times have changed in the 22 years since “The Matrix” arrived: the film’s groundbreaking effects almost seem quaint when compared to some recent winners and nominees in the Best Visual Effects category — to say nothing of the fact that dial-up internet was a key reference point for its vision of a digital world. But now, 18 years after the original film...

Series by Christopher James looking at the 'Gay Best Friend' trope
Doesn't it look like these two crazy, beautiful kids would make a cute couple? Think again.Another week, another 1998 comedy about the relationship between a woman and her gay best friend starring a cast member of Friends. You have to love a specific subgenre. While Lisa Kudrow and Martin Donovan traveled across the country to find Christina Ricci in The Opposite of Sex, Jennifer Aniston stayed in New York in a more familiar genre -- the romantic comedy.
As the title The Object of My Affection suggests, Aniston falls in love. Unfortunately for her, the titular role is her new gay best friend, a first grade teacher played by a baby-faced, charming Paul Rudd. Wendy Wasserstein’s adaptation of the Stephen McCauley book of the same name uses genre tropes to sand some of the thorny elements of the premise.

A series by Christopher James investigating the 'Gay Best Friend' trope
Martin Donovan stars as Bill Truitt, a kind teacher whose life is torn apart by his half-sister (Christina Ricci)
In this column, we haven’t really looked at many movies that were written or directed by queer people. You don’t have to be gay to include a gay best friend in your film. If that were a prerequisite, we would have so much less gay representation onscreen. But something magical does happen when queer people tell queer stories. It changes and affects the DNA of the movie. Take for example this week’s choice, The Opposite of Sex, written and directed by Don Roos. There’s a daring and unflinching energy to the film that can only be described as inherently queer. This allows the movie to take large swings that don’t always connect. It’s emboldened...

Greatest 20 living actresses never nominated for an Oscar, including Scarlett Johansson, Emily Blunt
With the debut of teaser trailers for “Marriage Story” from Noah Baumbach, actress Scarlett Johansson is once again in the conversation for a possible Oscar nomination. She will also have the anticipated film “Jojo Rabbit” later this awards season. If she gets a bid, it would surprisingly be her first ever in a career filled with contenders such as “Lost in Translation” and “Girl with a Pearl Earring” plus her blockbusters including “The Avengers” franchise.

Christina Ricci knows people judge her. She grew up in the public eye as the Goth girl, the alternative chick, the youthful indie darling. For her, those tacit critiques just provide the excuse to execute another hard turn.
“I’m a natural contrarian. So anytime someone tries to tell me what I am, I immediately change and I’m something else,” she said. “I can’t help it; I’m a total asshole in that respect. I never give people that. The 27th season of “Dancing with the Stars” is coming up this fall, and the results are in from our recent casting poll, so pay attention casting directors! These are the female celebrities our readers would most like to see on the show for its upcoming 27th season.

Hello and happy Monday, everybody - Jason from Mnpp here with another round of our "Beauty vs Beast" series! This week we're turning our eyes to the 20th anniversary of Don Roos' The Opposite of Sex, which is tomorrow. The film came out on May 22nd 1998, and all good gays (and gay-adjacents) have been quoting Christina Ricci's surly sexpot DeDee and Lisa Kudrow's snide spinster Lucia ever since. But what if I told you you had to choose??? That's not a hypothetical - I am actually asking you to choose. Right now!

If your first instinct upon seeing the title “The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society” is to say, “Well, that’s a mouthful,” rest assured that Mike Newell’s film has you covered, for a secondary character does the very same. Indeed, pretty much everyone in this crumbly oatmeal biscuit of a movie does and says exactly what you’d expect of them: based not on the logic of real life, of course, but the cozy conventions of umpteen twee heritage Britpics before it. For Sunday-afternoon comfort-viewing purposes, it’s no problem that “Guernsey” — which follows the post-wwii escapades of a winsome London writer (Lily James) on the eponymous isle — doesn’t stray from its inevitable course as a town-versus-country love triangle. That it offers no surprises as a nominal wartime mystery, however, is rather more bothersome, particularly as what should be a perky trifle trudges past the two-hour mark.

While the Independent Spirit Awards snubbed “Lady Bird” director Greta Gerwig, this doesn’t rule her acclaimed semi-autobiographical film out of the running for Best Picture. In the 32-year history of these awards, the top prize has gone to four films that didn’t have a corresponding bid for Best Director. (See the complete list of Independent Spirit Awards nominations.)
In 1991, Stephen Frears‘ “The Grifters” won Best Picture even though he was not nominated. It also claimed Best Actress (Angelica Huston). The prize for directing that year went to Charles Burnett for “To Sleep with Anger,” which was the big winner at that year’s ceremony taking home Best Actor (Danny Glover), Supporting Actress (Sheryl Lee Ralph) and Screenplay.

On October 22, after reading Glenn Whipp’s incendiary James Toback investigation in the La Times, Becky Wahlstrom scoured her journals. A veteran actress whose credits include “Joan of Arcadia” and “Mad Men,” she was 23 when she wrote a seven-and-a-half page entry on August 13, 1998 that described meeting Toback at the Beverly Hills Hotel for approximately five hours the night before.
Ostensibly, it was an audition for his film “Black and White”; Toback requested the meeting after seeing her deliver two lines in Don Roos’ “The Opposite of Sex.” She went to the audition without sides; she loved the idea that Toback liked to build his roles around his actors, a philosophy she embraced while studying at the Piven Theatre Workshop in Chicago.

As filming wraps on the Lily James-led Guernsey (aka The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society), two official images from the project have been released of the 1940’s based British production with James leading the charge as journalist Juliet Ashton.

The British production of Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows’ best-selling novel, carries one of the oddest titles of recent times, and has Four Weddings and a Funeral and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire’s Mike Newell at the helm of the Don Roos (Marley & Me, The Opposite of Sex) adapted screenplay.

On January 27, Christina Ricci will make her debut as nm1541232 autoZelda Sayre[/link] Fitzgerald on Amazon's new series Z: The Beginning of Everything, a fictional account of the flamboyant socialite who swept F. Scott Fitzgerald, one of the literary geniuses of the 20th century, off his feet.
“I would never be cast in this part,” Ricci says frankly about playing Fitzgerald on the series, which she not only stars on but co-developed and produces. “With this, I created my own opportunity because this is not a part I would’ve been cast in in a million years.”
Although parts may have beckoned toward a more traditional leading-lady rise to stardom early in her career, Ricci, now 36, has come to terms with the fact that she didn’t fit into that role. “I am not considered a romantic lead by traditional standards,” she says. “I've never been cast in a rom-com or a romance or anything like that. The transgender family drama “New People” is currently in development at Freeform. “The Opposite of Sex” director Don Roos is attached to write and executive produce the series based on the book “Becoming Nicole: The Transformation of an American Family” by Amy Ellis Nutt. Both the series and the New York Times bestseller are inspired by the true story of a transgender girl, her identical twin brother and their ordinary family’s extraordinary journey to celebrate the uniqueness in all of us. The script deal follows last summer’s “Becoming Us,” the unscripted series following the Lehwald family, whose father recently came out as transgender.

The Independent Spirit Awards recently announced their list of nominees and, if past years are any indication, they likely include at least one or two future Oscar winners.
Leading this year’s Spirit Awards is director Todd Haynes’ lesbian romantic drama set in 1950’s New York, Carol, which earned six nominations including best director for Haynes, best adapted screenplay for Phyllis Nagy, and acting noms for stars Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara.
Last year, four of the five major winners at the Spirits ended up with Oscars, as Julianne Moore (Still Alice, lead), Patricia Arquette (Boyhood, supporting), J.K. Simmons, and Birdman (best picture) all went on to win in their respective categories with the Academy.
2014, however, was a bit of an anomaly in terms of the Spirits decisions coinciding with the Academy’s. Yet, one category that remains a strong predicting factor for Oscar speculators is screenplay,...

All week long our writers will debate: Which was the greatest film year of the past half century. Check here for a complete list of our essays. Just one glance at the Oscar nominees for 1998 might make it seem less a questionable choice for “best year in film” — and more an insane one. Instead of a 1974 – The Godfather II, The Conversation, Chinatown, Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, etc – or even a 1994, where Shawshank, Quiz Show, and Pulp Fiction lost to Gump – you choose a year where the Oscars would allow Roberto Benigni to climb atop both the figurative and literal chairs of the Shrine? Fine, step away from the Oscars. Would you still celebrate a year that saw not one, but two movies about asteroids threatening the Earth? A year that saw such scars carved across cinematic history as Patch Adams, My Giant, Stepmom, and Krippendorf’s Tribe? It bears repeating: Krippendorf’S Tribe?...

While there’s always something stirring about one Marvel project or another, there’s one property that’s been suspiciously quiet as of late. It’s been a good six weeks since we’ve had any news on their troubled title, Ant-Man. Even then, it was a straw-clutching report about Evangeline Lilly’s haircut.
Now, however, we have something a bit more exciting, as THR reports that Weeds star Martin Donovan has joined the cast. As secrecy surrounding the pic is paramount, there’s very little they can reveal about who it is he’ll be playing. In fact, this is all they would offer:
Donovan’s role is being kept under wraps, but sources say it is pivotal to the story.

Los Angeles, Jan 19: Actress Christina Ricci, who plays a murderer in "Lizzie Borden Took an Ax", said that she was very exhausted after shooting the murder scenes for the film.
Ricci had to hack up bodies with an axe for the film, which is about a religion teacher accused of killing her parents, reports contactmusic.com.
"My arms got tired because the axe was heavy. You film scenes from a million different angles, and for every take I did 12 chops with the axe. My arms were ripped for about two days after. I didn't like getting fake blood in my hair though," Bang Showbiz quoted Ricci as saying.
The 33-year-old has earlier featured in films like "Buffalo '66", "The Opposite of Sex" and "Sleepy Hollow".

The overlooked greats of the year 1998 come under the spotlight in our list of its 25 underappreciated movies...
Dominated as it was by the financial success of two giant killer asteroid movies, gross-out comedy hit There's Something About Mary and Steven Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan, 1998 proved to be an extraordinary year for cinema.
Okay, so history doesn't look back too fondly on Roland Emmerich's mishandled Godzilla remake, and Lethal Weapon 4 was hardly the best buddy-cop flick ever made, despite its handsome profit. But search outside the top-10 grossing films of that year, and you'll find all kinds of spectacular modern classics: Peter Weir's wonderful The Truman Show, John Frankenheimer's rock-solid thriller Ronin, and Terrence Malick's The Thin Red Line.
Then there was The Big Lebowski, the Coen brothers' sublime comedy that has since become a deserved and oft-quoted cult favourite.

During the summer of 1998, one of the two multiplexes in my modestly sized hometown devoted one of its sixteen screens to limited release films throughout the entire season. They showed a range of small, non-mainstream narrative works from that surprisingly indie-rich summer, including Darren Aronofsky’s Pi, Vincent Gallo’s Buffalo ’66, Wayne Wang’s Chinese Box, James Toback’s Two Girls and a Guy, Don Roos’s The Opposite of Sex, Whit Stilman’s The Last Days of Disco, Neil Labute’s Your Friends and Neighbors, and Mr. Jealousy, a film that almost nobody remembers Noah Baumbach made. Despite their nearby availability, I saw approximately zero of these films. I was thirteen years old, and my parents maintained their strict no-r policy. But it was enough for me that the names of these films showed up in the local paper, and that I saw their posters displayed through smudged plexiglass outside the box office as I bought...

Everyone I’ve talked with who’s involved in the show’s production talks about the big part the location plays in the series, and I agree. Do you ever think of The Truman Show (1998)? I really and truly loved it in 1998 naming it 'The Best Film of the Year!' to anyone who would listen. (This was in my pre Film Experience days of course... though it's hard to remember such a time).
My Top Ten Of 1998 - Unranked
Bulworth (Warren Beatty) Celebration / Festen (Thomas Vinterberg) Gods and Monsters (Bill Condon) High Art (Lisa Cholodenko) The Idiots (Lars von Trier) Living Out Loud (Richard Lagravenese) The Opposite of Sex (Don Roos) The Thin Red Line (Terence Malick) The Truman Show (Peter Weir) Velvet Goldmine (Todd Haynes)
...with Central Station and Shakespeare in Love just outside the top ten though I'm always considering reinstating them. They were both once on the actual list (The Idiots and the Malick I saw a little later). I haven't seen any of them...

Most know Dan Bucatinsky as James Novak on the extremely addicting ABC hit Scandal, but if you really knew everything else he does during his "free-time" you would realize he's just as busy as Olivia Pope. Starting off as just an actor in L.A., Bucatinsky soon became a writer, author, and a producer after meeting a certain friend. During a recent interview with him, Bucatinsky opened up about his hectic (but exciting) schedule and working with his business partner Lisa Kudrow.

Dan Bucatinsky is a very busy man. The actor, writer and producer is currently playing a recurring role in ABC's Shonda Rhimes drama "Scandal" as James Novak, a former political journalist whose return to work has caused some serious, potentially administration-shaking conflicts for his husband Cyrus (Jeff Perry), the White House Chief of Staff. Off screen, Bucatinsky serves as a consulting producer on Rhimes' other current TV series "Grey's Anatomy" and, along with his spouse Don Roos ("The Opposite of Sex"), works on and sometimes appears in his producing partner Lisa Kudrow's web series-turned-Showtime comedy "Web Therapy." Bucatinsky's also written a book about his experiences becoming a father with Roos, the memoir "Does This Baby Make Me Look Straight?" Brace yourselves. This list of the Top 100 Greatest Gay Movies is probably going to generate some howls of protest thanks to a rather major upset in the rankings. Frankly, one that surprised the hell out of us here at AfterElton.
But before we get to that, an introduction. A few weeks ago we asked AfterElton readers to submit up to ten of their favorite films by write-in vote. We conducted a similar poll several years ago, but a lot has happened culturally since then, and a number of worthy movies of gay interest have been released. We wanted to see how your list of favorites had changed.
We also wanted to expand our list to 100 from the top 50 we had done previously. We figured there were finally enough quality gay films to justify the expansion. And we wanted to break out gay documentaries onto their own list (You'll find the...

One of Hollywood's most respected young actresses, Christina Ricci has been acting on the big screen since the age of ten, making her screen debut in Mermaids alongside Cher and Winona Ryder. This was closely followed by the release of family hit film - The Addams Family (1991) and its sequel, The Addams Family Values (1993).

Winner: Judi Dench, Shakespeare in Love (also won Nsfc & BAFTA)
I'm actually fine with this win (from the nominee pool, I mean) though I'm aware many internet dwellers are very anti-Shakespeare in Love
Nominees:
Kathy Bates, Primary Colors (Chicago, Bfca & SAG winner) Brenda Blethyn, Little Voice Rachel Griffiths, Hilary & Jackie Lynn Redgrave, Gods and Monsters (Spirit & Globe winner)
So that supporting shortlist was essentially one extended cameo (Judi), three normal size supporting roles (Kathy, Brenda, Lynn) and one co-lead title character (Rachel). My feeling is that it's a dull list even...

Since then, he's appeared in films such as The Opposite of Sex, Insomnia, and The Portrait of a Lady, in addition to recurring roles on television shows like 'Boss' and 'Weeds.' Clearly not one to limit himself, Donovan recently fulfilled his lifelong ambition to write and direct a feature: the result is Collaborator. The indie film veteran flawlessly transitions between writer, director, and actor to create this enthralling tragi-comedy. Collaborator follows famous playwright Robert Longfellow (Donovan), whose most recent works have been widely panned by critics and fans alike. Discouraged and unhappy with his marriage, Robert retreats to his childhood home in California to look in on his elderly mother. As...
