The Top 7 artists on “American Idol” Season 22 each performed twice on Sunday, May 5 — a dance song and an Adele song — with audiences voting live coast-to-coast for their favorites. (Read our minute-by-minute recap.) “I see dead people.” It’s one of the most memorable lines in modern cinema history. Back in the summer of 1999, everyone and their dead grandmother was saying those words in hushed tones, imitating young Cole Sear, the haunted protagonist of The Sixth Sense (watch it Here), which was as big of a cultural phenomenon as the movies had seen in years at the time. Thanks to an effective trailer, a word-of-mouth buzz that could not be ignored, the overall high quality of the product itself and, of course, that shocker of an ending, The Sixth Sense was one of those rare things at the cinema: a movie you simply could not miss, unless you didn’t mind being left out of the conversation completely. And most of the success was thanks to that one very compelling admission: “I see dead people.”
But that now infamous line almost wasn’t in the original script.

The 10 Things I Hate About You cast probably didn’t know it then, but the actors in the 1999 teen rom-com would get their breakout role. In the 25 years since its release, 10 Things I Hate About You has become a cult classic and a career highlight for its actors.
On the surface, 10 Things I Hate About You doesn’t sound like a recipe for success. A William Shakespeare play reworked into a teen comedy featuring a cast of mostly unknown actors? Critics didn’t fall head over heels for it in 1999, but the movie’s appeal has grown over time and attracted new generations of fans (even if sequel plans failed). And if the 10 Things I Hate About You cast was unknown then, now there is no mistaking the talent of stars like Julia Stiles, Heath Ledger, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

We feel like we’re on cloud nine listening to this Kellyoke cover.
On her talk show’s musical segment this week, Kelly Clarkson performed a piano-backed rendition of Katy Perry’s hit, “Wide Awake.”
Accompanied by Musical Director Jason Halbert, the singer slowed down the Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection ballad and performed the Perry favorite acoustically, showing off her stellar vocal range.
This isn’t the first time that Clarkson paid homage to Perry. Just last year, the musician sang a version of another Teenage Dream classic, “The One That Got Away,...

10 Things I Hate About Julia Stiles
I hate that her idgaf attitude was not present in more 90s teen rom coms.
I hate that I totally forgot about the movie Save The Last Dance.
I hate that she doesn’t get the respect she deserves.
I hate that I thought she was in that movie Swimfan.
I hate that she got stuck doing generic rom coms.
I hate that her character in the Jason Bourne franchise never got a spin-off.
I hate that I really haven’t seen much of her later work.
I hate that she tricked me into liking Shakespeare as a teen.
But most of all, I hate the way I don’t hate her – not even close, not even a little bit, not even at all. Oh, and I hate that I don’t know what the heck happened to her?
So let’s find out: Wtf Happened to.

M. Night Shyamalan's thirty-year-plus career has gone through many highs and lows — from rising to prominence as an innovative auteur to becoming a parody of himself with a string of unsuccessful studio sludge, then experiencing a comeback through the lo-fi horror genre. Whether he's viewed as a critical darling or a critical punching bag, Shyamalan continues to deliver suspenseful stories that delve into the darkest, most emotional corners of the human psyche.
After his masterpiece "The Sixth Sense" thrust him into the spotlight, Shyamalan became synonymous with supernatural thrillers that deliver a gobsmacking twist, turning the world of the film completely upside down. But soon these astonishing final revelations became an expectation that not every film was able to deliver, even becoming ridiculously absurd.

M. Night Shyamalan is back in the spotlight, with a brand-new film that is making waves. His movies have a history of causing controversy, mostly due to their shocking finale twists — but unlike many of his contemporaries, the director rarely relies on blood or gore in order to get attention. While many of Shyamalan’s movies have earned a PG-13 rating, the director recently revealed that there’s one film that very nearly got an R rating. In fact, he ended up having to cut one specific sound effect in order for the film to receive the more widely-accepted PG-13.

The following post contains spoilers for nine M. Night Shyamalan movies, including "Knock at the Cabin."
Many casual fans don't know this, but "The Sixth Sense" wasn't M. Night Shyamalan's first feature film. It was his third, after "Praying with Anger" and "Wide Awake," but it defined his reputation as a maker of eerily quiet, slow-paced thrillers with a "Twilight Zone" vibe and (usually) big twists at the end. Initially, this formula was so successful that some began referring to Shyamalan in the same sentence as Steven Spielberg, but then he took some bigger swings — without the twists — and things didn't work out so well. So, after being humbled by big-budget disappointments like "The Last Airbender" and "After Earth," Shyamalan went back to basics, making films with lower budgets, more suspenseful plots, and yes, big twists. Of late, he's taken to adapting books and actually changing the endings, surprising readers...

M. Night Shyamalan got his start in Hollywood working with Harvey Weinstein, whom in a new THR interview he calls the industry’s “biggest monster.”
The “Knock at the Cabin” writer-director was scooped up by Miramax following the success of his 1992 film “Praying With Angels,” followed by his 1998 feature “Wide Awake” under the studio. Yet Weinstein’s work methods proved to be a “personal hell” for Shyamalan.
“I started so young in trying to make movies and failing, but they were reps. I made ‘Wide Awake’ for Miramax and Harvey Weinstein. I went through my own personal hell being there, but it was trial by fire,” Shyamalan told The Hollywood Reporter. “I didn’t realize it at the time, but I started my career with the biggest monster that ever was. M. Night Shyamalan thought his career was over. In the mid- to late-’90s, he was trapped at Miramax, and his little-seen second film, 1998’s Wide Awake, had been put through the Harvey Weinstein wringer. His dreams of being a working Hollywood director were fading day by day until his reps at UTA found a crack in his otherwise ironclad Miramax contract. The company may have owned his ability to direct, but it did not control his ability to write. So Shyamalan opted to pen the best screenplay he possibly could in order to leverage its demand and escape the clutches of Miramax. That script became The Sixth Sense, and Disney (which then owned Miramax) soon bought the rights with Shyamalan on board as director.

On August 2, 2002, Buena Vista unveiled M. Night Shyamalan’s sci-fi thriller Signs in theaters, where it would go on to gross 408 million as an end of summer hit. The Hollywood Reporter’s original review is below:
Neither the home run he hit with The Sixth Sense nor the bunt single he laid down with Unbreakable, Signs will inspire an enthusiastic following but will probably disappoint the crowd that likes spooky alien space invasion movies to contain more hard-core action and less spirituality. Shyamalan’s name plus a cast headed by Mel Gibson and Joaquin Phoenix ensures a solid opening for Disney followed by steady attendance into September.
After three major studio films and four if you count his second feature, Wide Awake, which Miramax released, it’s clear that Shyamalan can deliver chills. But equally as clear is his insistence upon investing the supernatural with the metaphysical,...

A TikTok star and a formerly homeless singer both stood out and impressed the “American Idol” judges during Sunday night’s auditions round on the ABC reality singing competition.
Shortly before performing Katy Perry’s “Wide Awake,” which earned her the praise of the pop star and a golden ticket to Hollywood, Lady K opened up about some of the hardships that she and her family had endured in recent years after the judges asked how she came to audition.
“It was really hard growing up with a young, single mom with no help,” she explained as the show cut to interview footage of the contestant. “There was a time where my family and I ended up living in a shelter, and my mom, myself and my four brothers and sisters were bound to a dorm. We had to make that work. That was home. I’m the oldest, so...

When M. Night Shyamalan made "The Sixth Sense," it was by no means a guaranteed hit. In fact, some might have considered it a gamble. Shyamalan had just come off directing the 1998 comedy "Wide Awake" which grossed a paltry $282,000 on a $6 million budget (Box Office Mojo).
Still, expectations were high. "The Sixth Sense" had a box office draw in Bruce Willis, a clever script, and the backing of a major studio in Disney's Hollywood Pictures. The gamble paid off, as the film was a massive success, putting Shyamalan on the map with his first of many signature plot twists, making...

“Play” time has begun in Las Vegas.
On Wednesday night, Katy Perry launched her highly anticipated Las Vegas residency at the Resorts World Theater. Aptly titled “Play,” the show is quintessential Perry, who indulged the emotional, the over-the-top, the whimsical, the psychedelic, and even the cheesy over the course of 95 minutes.
The concert — which the artist is referring to as “Perry Playland” — amounted to a giant singalong, which seemed to be exactly what she had in mind. Just one day before opening night, Perry posted a video of the setlist...

Louise Candlish’s best-selling novel “The Other Passenger” is getting the feature film treatment.
Actor-turned-director Joseph Cross has nabbed film rights and plans to direct the movie adaptation. Cross will also produce the film through his company, Moving Image Productions, alongside Lucas Evans. No actors are attached yet.
Candlish’s book, which is a hit in the U.K., will be published in the United States in July 2021 by Simon & Schuster. The logline for the book reads: “Rocked by a traumatic incident on the commuter train, Jamie travels to work by river bus with his younger neighbor Kit. It’s the lifestyle change he badly needs — until the morning Kit doesn’t show up for the boat and Jamie is met at his stop by the police. Kit’s wife Melia has reported him missing and the police say another passenger saw Kit and Jamie arguing on the boat home the night before.

It’s the 20th anniversary of “The Sixth Sense,” a success that took everybody by surprise, including the filmmakers. Writer-director M. Night Shyamalan had made only two films, “Praying With Anger” and “Wide Awake,” which barely made a ripple in theaters. However, Variety reported Aug. 9, 1999, “In a surprise ending to rival the film’s twisty plot, Buena Vista’s supernatural thriller ‘The Sixth Sense’ stunned prognosticators by snatching the weekend box office title from odds-on favorite ‘The Blair Witch Project.’ The Bruce Willis starrer opened to an August record $25.8 million, according to studio estimates.” A month later, Variety declared it the “Sleeper of the Summer,” and said amid all the films with big marketing budgets and the studios’ newfound fascination with internet promotion, “Sixth Sense” had an old-fashioned reason for success: “This film has spectacular word of mouth,” Marc Pascucci, senior VP of marketing for Loews Cineplex U.S., told Variety.

Over the course of three albums, Rayland Baxter has sketched his own picture of lush Americana and oddball folk, singing songs about fishhooks and females along the way. With his latest release, Wide Awake, he presents his own version of classic pop-rock. It’s a sound that’s rich in tone, texture and the unique songwriting of a Nashville native who grew up watching his father, pedal steel legend Bucky Baxter, playing with some of the late 20th century’s most iconic frontmen.

In a fitting manner, M. Night Shyamalan's path to notoriety was full of unexpected twists. With this month’s release of Glass, we take a look at the early years of this contentious filmmaker.
M. Night Shyamalan is a popular filmmaker who has gained notoriety for his supernatural thrillers and the manner in which his films often end with a shocking twist. His breakthrough was the 1999 Bruce Willis-starring thriller, The Sixth Sense. That film seemingly came out of nowhere and impressed both audiences and critics with its wit and the performances of its two lead actors. The film would go on to gross more than a billion dollars at the box office (adjusted for 2019), and would give his career a huge momentum boost which would continue over the course of his next few films, which included Unbreakable, Signs, and The Village. Both The Sixth Sense and The Village would receive Academy Award nominations,...

Rayland Baxter, a smooth-voiced singer-songwriter from Nashville, made a last-minute switch before arriving at Spotify’s Manhattan offices. He’d planned to cover “Terrapin Station” by the Grateful Dead for the Singles Series, but changed course to do “Strangers” by the Kinks instead. Hardly a live-or-die scenario, but a telling detail nonetheless about the way curious way cover songs tend to reveal more about the person doing the covering. And Baxter, who’s just establishing his career, wanted this message to be precise.

Rayland Baxter was ready to get away from the world in the autumn of 2016. In this, the Nashville singer-songwriter was hardly unique, but in the three months that he spent living in an old rubber factory in rural Kentucky, with little more than a mattress, a guitar, and a Wurlitzer, Baxter did something with his political angst: he wrote an album.
“I knew I had a bunch of song ideas that I wanted to start getting going on, and I knew I wanted to go out to some place in the woods.

Parquet Courts’ lead singer Andrew Savage, one-half of the Brooklyn-by-way-of-Texas band’s two-headed leadership, is mad as hell. While on the opposite side of the stage, bandmate Austin Brown is getting wistful. That yin-and-yang of punk and funk – as Savage notes in the opening track to “Wide Awake!,” “Total Football:” “Collectivism and autonomy are not mutually exclusive” – lends itself to the very human dilemma at the heart of Parquet Courts’ fifth album, “Wide Awake!”
Often cited as part of the continuum of downtown New York art-guitar bands — from the Velvet Underground through Television to the Strokes — Parquet Courts are the perfect example of rock miniaturization, refining what they do to a hard diamond for those in-the-know. By enlisting pop wunderkind Brian “Danger Mouse” Burton as their first-ever outside producer, Parquet Courts has opened up its musical palette even more than most recent effort, 2016’s ballad-laden “Human Performance.”

The show is set to begin filming in Toronto this coming Fall for the 2018-19 season.

Turns out America still likes M. Night Shyamalan. The reputation of the former next great hope of Hollywood fizzled out after a string of poorly received films and ill-conceived forays into effect-driven blockbuster fantasy, but now the low-budget thriller Split has proven to be his critical and commercial comeback. The film earned Shyamalan his best reviews in 15 years (since Signs, in other words), as well as one of the largest January opening weekends on record. Exceeding predictions, the movie opened at No. 1 with a $40.2 million box office debut. Given that the movie cost less to make than Shyamalan’s little-seen pre-Sixth Sense feature Wide Awake—the one where Rosie O’Donnell plays a nun—that means it’s already wildly profitable. It helps the thing is damn entertaining.
