- The original New Zealand version ran 108 min. Peter Jackson then cut 9 minutes from the film for the international release. (he has mentioned that the 99 min. cut is the one he prefers.)
- The original ending included a final ship sequence in which Pauline, stranded on the dock, watches Juliet and her family sailing away. The camera cuts to Pauline, then pans back to reveal her alone on the dock with her mother's bludgeoned body at her feet. The screen fades to black and we hear Pauline scream "No!" before the epilogue appears.
- The region 1 uncut DVD includes many new scenes not included in the video, including a scene right before the Port Levy, Easter scene in which the Hulmes and Pauline sing "How Much is that Doggie in the Window". Followed by a more fleshed out beach scene in which Mrs. Hulme refers to Pauline as her "foster" daughter.
- Another scene on the region 1 uncut DVD comes right after the scene where they steal from the Hulmes to make money. They talk about going to Calfornia and meeting all their "saints." Seconds later another scene is present in which Pauline and Juliet are at a party in which Mrs. Hulme is playing tennis with Bill Perry and the girls play a prank by hurling a rock into a pool near an old couple getting them wet. Then in the next scene Bill Perry is moved into the Hulme residence. The girls then discuss Bill and Mrs. Hulme and Juliet promises that Mrs. Hulme will not leave Mr. Hulme. The next scene includes Mr. Hulme being fired from Canterbury college, followed by a scene where Mr. Hulme cries as Mrs. Hulme and Bill flirt off-screen.
- The film earned a 'U' (unrestricted) rating for TV only in Chennai (South India) with some cuts to certain scenes.
- Pauline and Juliet taking off each others' clothes ending up half-naked while laughing.
- Juliet coughing up blood.
- A fantasy sequence of a man being decapitated off-screen.
- Pauline having sex with John.
- Pauline imagining her doctor getting stabbed through the chest by a clay knight from behind.
- Pauline and Juliet in a bathtub.
- Juliet climbing on top of Pauline kissing and lying down together.
- Pauline and Juliet killing Pauline's mother including the sight of her bloody face.
- And the last shot of Pauline shouting "No!".
- An extended version of Pauline's "The Ones That I Worship" poem includes several brief scenes different from the theatrical release. When the Borovinian Nicholas is murdered by Diallo, there is a split-second shot of his clay body cut in half. Immediately following this is an extra, omitted verse of the poem where Pauline and Juliet are shown dressed as Borovinian princesses. They toast with glasses of wine, then transform into clay models of themselves.
