Legendary Japanese actor-director Takeshi Kitano returns to the Croisette for the first time this year since 2010, when his film “Outrage” competed for the coveted Palme d’Or. And while “Kubi,” Kitano’s latest directorial effort, may premiere out of competition at the 76th edition of the Cannes Film Festival this month, The Film Stage still think it’ll be a festival highlight.

French star Julie Gayet (The Perfect Mother) is among an ensemble cast to have has assembled for revenge thriller Outrage alongside Adelaide Kane (The Purge), Jay O. Sanders (The Day After Tomorrow), Clemens Schick (Andor), and Manuel Cauchi (13 Hours).
The now-completed feature directorial debut from French-American filmmaker Mathieu Bonzon, Outrage will be screening at the European Film Market in Berlin, where Film Mode Entertainment is handling global sales.
“We’re excited to be working with the talented Mathieu Bonzon on his feature directorial debut,” said Film Mode’s Clay Epstein. “This is a tight thriller with a fantastic twist, and we can’t wait for audiences to join in on the fun.”
Outrage takes place in a secluded French château, where a group of international media and political personalities gather for a private dinner party. Beneath the glitz and glamor lie dark conspiracies between an extremist group and a burgeoning news media company.

In the last decade, there has been a flourishing of films in which ageing heroes demonstrate that there is more than petanque and bingo in post-retirement life. Franchises like “Red” and “The Expendables” satisfy the collective desire to stay active and fit and never get old, and are also a vehicle for recycling old and beloved stars. But Kitano’s old bad guys of his “Ryuzo and the Seven Henchmen” are more “amiable losers” than their Hollywood heroic counterparts.

Ryuzo is a non-affective grandfather, with a turbulent past as a member of a Yakuza “family” who is not ready yet to stay calm and sit on an armchair. When not terrorizing the children of the neighborhood and insulting his daughter-in-law, Ryuzo spends his time wearing a “wife-beater” vest showing off his gang tattoos in plain sight and training with the bokken (the wooden katana) under...

Now that the film schedule has been announced, and Ive discovered that my day-early departure means I will only miss ‘Burnt By The Sun 2: Exodus’ of the films I was definitely keen to see, I have a better idea of the films showing, and have come up with the ten most important films showing at this year’s 63rd Cannes Film Festival.
The list is by no means definitive, and is of course influenced most heavily by Western films (and English languages ones even more heavily), which I hope is forgiveable by the fact that they are most likely to hit our screens.
So here they are in no particular order:
10. The Tree
Director: Julie Bertuccelli
Starring: Marton Csokas, Morgana Davies, Charlotte Gainsbourg
Synopsis: After the sudden loss of her father, 8-year-old Simone shares a secret with her mother Dawn: her father whispers to her through the leaves of...

This is likely to be my last preview of this nature before I take off for the 2010 Cannes Film Festival on Monday morning, but seeing how it includes first look photos at several of the higher profile films at the festival I didn't think I could pass up the opportunity to share.
Unfortunately the images I received were not high resolution so I have put them together as best as I could to give you the best look at each and not distort the images. I've also included the date the first screen at the festival and hopefully (if all goes right) I'll have reactionary coverage soon after the credits for each. Stay tuned and enjoy...

Another Year, the new film from festival favourite Mike Leigh, has reportedly been inked into the Cannes 2010 programme, ahead of tomorrow's official launch
One film is a dead cert for this year's Cannes film festival: Ridley Scott's Robin Hood, which has already been announced as the opening night gala, screening out of competition. Now, ahead of tomorrow's Paris press conference in which festival director Thierry Fremaux will firm up the rest of the festival's line-up, film sites are abuzz with speculation as to the other key titles.
Today, Variety confidently reports that Mike Leigh's Another Year, which stars Jim Broadbent and Imelda Staunton, has been confirmed, as has Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's Biutiful, a Spanish-language drama starring Javier Bardem.
Other hotly-tipped titles include Fair Game, Doug Liman's spy thriller starring Sean Penn and Naomi Watts, which Variety reports screened earlier this week for Fremaux and his selection committee,...
