Harrison Ford is famous mostly thanks to his “good guy” iconic roles — remembering Indiana Jones and Han Solo will already be enough to confirm it. And he wouldn’t even have had a thought of taking up some radically different role if at some point it hadn’t come to his potential work with legendary Martin Scorsese who’d wanted to see Ford in his 1991’s thriller Cape Fear.
Scorsese, in his turn, became prominent to the world public and got everyone’s accolades (and still does) for his dark-themed, often criminal thrillers that never miss their chance to show some quite explicit violence — the opposite to what Harrison Ford was usually up to.
Cape Fear already existed before Martin Scorsese — the initial film was released in 1962 and is still considered to be one of the best psychological thrillers in cinema history. The plot follows Max Cady, a man that...

If you've seen the trailers, then you know Them: The Scare will surely be unlike anything else on television.
The black horror anthology returns for a second season on Prime Video, with a new story and landscape at the forefront but the same scares the first season evoked.
TV Fanatic was lucky enough to participate in the Them: The Scare press day, where we chatted with series creator Little Marvin and Deborah Ayorinde, who returns to the series in a new role.
While the first season, Them: Covenant, was set in 1953 and followed a black family moving from North Carolina to an all-white neighborhood in Los Angeles, this season takes place in 1991.
The story stays in Los Angeles but changes the timeframe, introducing a new set of circumstances for the new cast of characters.
Little Marvin, the mastermind behind the innovative series, was inspired by many things when creating this universe.

Of all the cautionary lessons that horror imparts, one of the most common warns us never to mess with Mother Nature. Those who are careless or hostile to the environment often meet their demises when Earth retaliates violently in eco-horror movies.
Ecological horror movies explore humankind’s estranged, fractured relationship with the planet, and its characters often find themselves on the defense against nature’s wrath. In celebration of Earth Day, an annual event in support of environmental protection, we’re looking back at some of the best eco-horror movies that remind us to take care of our planet… or else.
Here are ten eco-horror movies to watch this Earth Day.

Veteran director Steven Spielberg’s follow-up to The Fabelmans will be a return to a subject that the filmmaker has history with: UFOs.
Since the release of The Fabelmans at the beginning of 2023, Steven Spielberg hasn’t announced his next project. As is always the case, we know the filmmaker has things cooking away: there’s the remake of Bullitt that looked to be in pole position to be the director’s next film to go in front of cameras. There’s also the Cape Fear TV series for Apple that he’s setting up with Martin Scorsese, not to mention the Ready Player One sequel that he will be stepping back from but still producing.
However, we didn’t know what Spielberg’s next directorial project until now. Variety is claiming that the veteran filmmaker’s next move is to ‘likely make his next project a UFO film based on his own original idea.

It was a very good year for Martin Scorsese when the iconic filmmaker earned 10 Oscar nominations for Killers of the Flower Moon, but the 81-year-old auteur isn’t slowing down. In addition to partnering with Steven Spielberg to adapt Cape Fear for TV and adapting Life of Jesus based on Shūsaku Endō’s 1973 novel, Scorsese is eyeing a Frank Sinatra biopic with Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence reportedly leading the cast.
While a Frank Sinatra biopic based on the life and times of the world-famous crooner sounds like a dream project come true, Scorsese might encounter a sour note on behalf of the late entertainer’s daughter, Tina Sinatra, who controls her father’s estate. Tina is withholding her blessing for Scorsese to move forward with the project, but that hasn’t stopped him from lining up a cast of A-list actors to make it a reality. Martin Scorsese is taking on biopics of both Jesus and a music god: Frank Sinatra.
The Oscar-winning auteur is rumored to be once more developing a biopic based on the legendary crooner — a project Scorsese’s been associated with before — with longtime collaborator Leonardo DiCaprio in talks to portray Ol’ Blue Eyes himself. Variety reported the news. DiCaprio recently starred in Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon,” and also led other Scorsese-helmed biopics like “The Wolf of Wall Street” and “The Aviator.”
Variety noted that Frank Sinatra’s daughter Tina Sinatra controls her father’s estate and hasn’t yet approved a film adaptation of his life story. However, Scorsese is already looking to cast both DiCaprio and fellow Academy Award winner Jennifer Lawrence in the film, with Lawrence portraying screen star Ava Gardner, who was Sinatra’s second wife after Nancy Barbato. Lawrence and DiCaprio co-starred in “Don’t Look Up.

"Killers of the Flower Moon" may have ended with a bittersweet final coda from Martin Scorsese, but the acclaimed octogenarian director clearly still has plenty of future projects on his plate. Variety just broke the news that Scorsese apparently has a Frank Sinatra biopic in the works, and while the filmmaker's reps declined to comment, the outlet claims he has none other than frequent leading man Leonardo DiCaprio in mind to play the lead. The filmmaker's take on the famous crooner's life also reportedly will include a major part for Jennifer Lawrence, who sources say will play Sinatra's second wife, Ava Gardner.
According to the trade outlet, the Sinatra picture isn't exactly a done deal: Variety notes that Sinatra's daughter Tina, who controls the late singer's estate, hasn't given her blessing for the movie yet. Still, studios including Sony and Apple are reportedly interested in the as-yet-untitled film, which...

Mark Twain once quipped, “Age is a case of mind over matter. If you don’t mind it, it doesn’t matter.” When it comes to Martin Scorsese, age certainly isn’t making a difference. After landing 10 Oscar nominations for last year’s historical crime epic “Killers of the Flower Moon,” the 81-year-old director has mapped out his next several projects. Sources say he plans to shoot two films back to back: the first about Jesus, the second a Frank Sinatra biopic.
The Oscar-winning director who helped usher in the Hollywood New Wave of the 1970s is looking to bypass the studio system and independently finance “Life of Jesus,” based on Shūsaku Endō’s 1973 book. He took the same approach with the 2016 drama “Silence” (which also was adapted from an Endō novel). Steven Spielberg was filled with doubts when he was approached to direct Schindler’s List. Spielberg didn’t consider himself mature enough to make a film on the Holocaust, however, he was unwilling to let the opportunity slide. Martin Scorsese was in the running to direct the film at one point. However, Spielberg decided to offer Scorsese a chance to direct the 1991 remake of Cape Fear and decided to helm the Liam Neeson-led film himself.

It’s time for a new episode of the Real Slashers video series, and with this one we’re heading back into the glorious ’80s to look at a film that was released during the slasher boom of 1981: Happy Birthday to Me (watch it Here)! This movie was directed by J. Lee Thompson, whose previous credits included the classics The Guns of Navarone and Cape Fear (not to mention Conquest of the Planet of the Apes and Battle for the Planet of the Apes). It’s Cape Fear meets ‘The Burbs in director John Schlesinger’s Pacific Heights. Although you might be fooled by Hanz Zimmer’s score, which sounds a lot more like you’re watching Sexy Beetlejuice than a ’90s thriller. This is pure irony, of course, considering the film stars Beetlejuice himself, Michael Keaton, as a conman who is six feet from the edge and thinking maybe doing murder isn’t so far down.
For those of you arguing silently in your heads that Pacific Heights is not a horror movie, let me go ahead and agree with you. It’s a pure thriller. But imagine this for a moment; imagine somewhere out there is a fresh-off Batman Michael Keaton, sitting in a dark room twirling both a razor blade and a large cockroach through his fingers like some sort of emo fidget spinner, plotting you and your significant other’s demise.

Robert De Niro is one of the most celebrated actors in Hollywood with films like The Godfather Part II, Taxi Driver, Cape Fear, and Silver Linings Playbook. His collaborations with director Martin Scorsese are considered some of the best films ever created. They played a pivotal role in pushing him to international success. Despite being one of the greatest actors ever, he is also afraid of rejection, but it’s not the rejection from films.

Robert Downey Jr. looks to have Best Supporting Actor locked up after he swept the precursors for his sterling turn in Christopher Nolan‘s “Oppenheimer.” But while Downey Jr. would be more than a deserving winner for his phenomenal performance, the Oscars always throws up a surprise or two on the actual night. Could we see an upset in Best Supporting Actor?
Downey Jr. is nominated alongside Ryan Gosling (“Barbie”), Mark Ruffalo (“Poor Things”), Sterling K. Brown (“American Fiction”), and Robert De Niro (“Killers of the Flower Moon”). Gosling has lots of support for his sublime “Barbie” performance while Ruffalo and Brown also have their backers, too. However, the legendary De Niro could prove to be the closest challenger to Downey Jr. thanks to his iconic career and status.

A lot of really fun movies from the eighties and nineties are tough to get decent copies of. While some of the stories have happy endings, other films seem all but doomed to languish until a niche label like Arrow Video, Kino Lorber, or Unearthed Films gives them the TLC they deserve. So, what’s the title we’re worried is Gone Forever here at JoBlo? A cool little thriller (which I previously wrote up for Best Movie You Never Saw) from 1991 called Ricochet has a pretty impressive pedigree. The movie stars Denzel Washington, John Lithgow, Ice-t, Kevin Pollack and The Bionic Woman herself, Lindsay Wagner, while Highlander’s Russell Mulcahy directs it, is produced by Joel Silver, and is written by Die Hard’s Steven E De Souza. In fact, Ricochet takes place in the same universe as Die Hard, with Mary Ellen Trainor reprising her role as snoopy TV reporter Gale Wallens.

Martin Scorsese was at the Berlinale this week for the first time in a decade. His presence to collect an honorary Golden Bear was a reminder of the festival’s glories of yesteryear.
In decades past, Scorsese touched down in Berlin with major works such as Raging Bull (1981), Cape Fear (1992); Gangs of New York (2003 ), Shine a Light (2008) and Shutter Island (2010). It feels a long time since the event — traditionally one of the world’s great cinema showcases — has attracted such movies. In recent years the studio splashes have dried up.
So have memorable movies from A-list arthouse filmmakers. Scorsese this week sang the praises of the event for the encouragement it had given him as an emerging filmmaker. When you work in Hollywood, but can't write or direct or act or do anything that requires a practical skill ... well, you're either an executive or an agent. This means you probably make more money than most of your clients or the genuinely talented people you employ. This, you'd think, would be enough to get you through the night. But these are (mostly) awful people with awfully large egos. They don't just want money. They want credit for having played (they believe) a vital part in the creation of art. So they exaggerate their role to anyone who will listen (hopefully a credulous reporter). And when that's not enough, sometimes they just flat-out lie.
Erstwhile superagent Michael Ovitz played this mendacious game better than anyone.

It’s not often that a doc about the transformative power of cinema will deliberately use bad clips of the movies it’s talking about, but that’s part of the point of this insightful, sprawling film, corralled by director David Hinton. Though the masterpieces made by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger at the height of their big-screen, Technicolor powers were visually impeccable, their subversive emotional power could still pack a punch through a 16-inch TV screen, even from the most scratched, butchered, and washed-out black-and-white prints.
This is, famously, how the young Martin Scorsese discovered The Archers (as the pairing styled themselves), and in this lengthy discourse he gets to position them both as an influence on his own movies and as unsung heroes in the history of world cinema. There is no denying that Martin Scorsese stands with some of the finest filmmakers that Hollywood has to offer. However, despite having uncountable projects to his name, Martin Scorsese has barely touched the Horror genre with his films.

Now this doesn’t mean that the filmmaker is not into the genre. In fact, there is one film out there that was so full of dread that it became one of Martin Scorsese’s favorites in the genre.

Martin Scorsese was greeted by loud cheers as he alighted from his car at the Berlinale Palast on Tuesday night, and set about signing autographs for the crowd gathered on this cold Berlin night.
The Oscar-winning filmmaker is the recipient of an honorary Golden Bear for lifetime achievement at the 74th Berlinale.
“Marty!! Marty!!” the crowd chanted, as Scorsese posed for photographers before fielding press questions and greeting festival brass, protected from the sharp weather only by his dapper black suit.
Once inside the auditorium, the 81-year-old finally sat down some 25 minutes after arriving, following a long-standing ovation.
Live music from the soundtrack of Killers of the Flowers Moon was accompanied by clips playing on the screen. The fest’s exec director, Marietta Rissenbeek, and artistic director, Carlo Chatrian, offered a few words in recognition of the great director, making Scorsese laugh and seem to all but cry with his daughter Francesca by his side.

In his tribute speech, Wenders described his old friend as “the reigning king of cinema” and said that over half a century of directing, Scorsese had become a trademark, almost brand.
“You could safely go into a movie theatre, sit down and know that with this next Martin Scorsese Picture, that was your your credit formula Marty, you were going to see a masterful film that would markedly define its time, not more not less,” he said.
He recalled how he and Scorsese had first hooked up while attending the Telluride Film Festival in 1978.

Martin Scorsese revealed he is still mulling how to tackle the life of Jesus on the big screen, at a press conference at the Berlin Film Festival where he will receive its honorary Golden Bear on Tuesday evening.
“I’m contemplating it right now. What kind of film I’m not quite sure, but I want to make something unique and different that could be thought-provoking and I hope also entertaining. I’m not quite sure yet how to go about it,” he said.
Scorsese first revealed that he wanted to make a film about the life of Jesus while attending Pope Francis’s Global Aesthetics of the Catholic Imagination conference at the Vatican last May.
A recent L.A. Times article suggested that he had completed a screenplay adapted from the book A Life Of Jesus by Shūsaku Endō, who was also the author of historical missionary tale Silence which...

"Mo Better Blues." "Malcolm X." "He Got Game." "Inside Man." It is always an event when Spike Lee and Denzel Washington team up for a movie, and they always, always deliver. "Mo Better Blues" suffered from being Lee's follow-up to his masterpiece "Do the Right Thing," but its critical reputation has improved significantly over time. "Malcolm X" is probably the second most important (and brilliant) film about race next to "Do the Right Thing." "He Got Game" is an electric-yet-harrowing father-son drama set against the wanton corruption of college basketball. And "Inside Man" is just a plain old pip of a heist movie, one that makes you wish Lee would place his stylistic spin on more straight-up genre stories.
According to Variety, Lee is set to tackle one of the most masterfully crafted cop tales ever made, and you best believe he's re-teaming with Washington to bring it off.

Upon securing a spot in the 2024 Best Supporting Actress Oscar lineup, Jodie Foster (“Nyad”) officially shattered the Academy Awards record for longest span between fourth and fifth acting nominations. Following her two Best Actress wins for “The Accused” (1989) and “The Silence of the Lambs” (1992), she had last been recognized in that category for “Nell” (1995), making for a general nomination gap of 29 years. Coincidentally, she took this particular distinction from fellow “Silence of the Lambs” winner Anthony Hopkins, who waited 22 years between his supporting bids for “Amistad” (1998) and “The Two Popes” (2020).
Previously, the female record for longest wait for a fifth nomination was 12 years, as shared by Julianne Moore and Frances McDormand. Considering gaps between any two consecutive acting nominations, Foster ranks well behind overall record holder Judd Hirsch, whose first and second career notices for “Ordinary People” (1981) and “The Fabelmans” (2023) came 42 years apart. Coinciding with the 50th anniversary of their first screen collaboration (“Mean Streets”), actor Robert De Niro and director Martin Scorsese reunited in 2023 to make “Killers of the Flower Moon,” thus bringing their amount of shared feature film credits to an even 10. Although their latest joint effort constitutes a rare instance of Scorsese employing De Niro’s talents in a supporting capacity, his new role is far from the shortest he’s played for the director, both in terms of actual time on screen and percentage of the total film. Check out our photo gallery in which we rank all 10 of De Niro’s Scorsese-directed performances from shortest to longest.
De Niro worked with Scorsese three times in the 1970s, twice in the ‘80s, and three times in the ‘90s before the duo took a two-decade collaboration hiatus. After De Niro starred as himself in Scorsese’s 2015 short film, “The Audition,...

1986 was an important year for DC Comics. "Crisis on Infinite Earths" rebooted the decades-old continuity, and Frank Miller reinvigorated Batman with "The Dark Knight Returns." Miller's tale depicted an aged Bruce Wayne coming out of retirement to fight the evils of the 1980s, from street gangs to the Cold War to Ronald Reagan. If you've ever wondered what the beginning of dark and gritty Batman was, it was this book.
The next year, DC was relaunching the main "Batman" title for the "Post-Crisis" era, and Miller was the obvious choice to kick it off. The result was "Year One," running four issues from "Batman" #404-407. The book follows Bruce Wayne's early days as a crime fighter when Gotham City was menaced by the mob, not super-villains. Batman refines his tactics through trial and error and slowly wins the trust of James Gordon — not yet a commissioner, but a rare...

Martin Scorsese's "Goodfellas" turns 34 this year. The movie itself spans more than three decades, chronicling Henry Hill's (Ray Liotta) life as an associate in the New York mob — Hill's life story was first told to the public by the nonfiction book "Wiseguy" by Nicholas Pileggi, who co-wrote the "Goodfellas" script with Scorsese.
"Goodfellas" is a cinematic shot of adrenaline, cut with vivacious energy by Thelma Schoonmaker and scored with classic rock to reflect the anti-authority glamour of mid-20th century gangsters. No matter if you watch it in all its sprawling glory or just sample clips, it's enjoyable — nay, irresistible.
Since "Goodfellas" packs so many years into two-and-a-half hours, it has a huge cast. So much time has passed since "Goodfellas" premiered in theaters and left its mark on crime cinema that not all of these actors are still with us. Miraculously, though, quite a few of them...

Robert De Niro has been working in Hollywood for almost six decades now, with eight Oscar nominations to his name and two wins. His most noted collaboration has been with director Martin Scorsese, with whom he has done 10 films, including their latest partnership on “Killers of the Flower Moon,” which was released October 20 through Apple Original Films. In celebration of the western crime epic, let’s take a look back at De Niro’s eight Oscar nominations in 45 years; seven for acting and one for producing.
His first Oscar nomination and victory came on the heels of Francis Ford Coppola’s epic crime film “The Godfather” with the equally successful second installment “The Godfather Part II” (1974), in which De Niro plays a young Vito Corleone, played by Oscar winner Marlon Brando in the first movie. When the remake of Cape Fear was released in 1991, it came from a dream team: Steven Spielberg was its producer (he initially developed the project), and Martin Scorsese directed it. Now, Cape Fear is being developed as a new television series, with both Scorsese and Spielberg on board as producers. Having both men involved certainly bodes well for the project, as both hold a deep passion for the material. In fact, when the ’91 movie was released, Scorsese told us he had some intense discussions about how to make the film work. A third take on the Cape Fear story is happening, with a true crime focus to it. More on the TV project here.
It’s a relatively well known piece of film trivia that when it came to the 1991 remake of the film Cape Fear, it was a project that Steven Spielberg was originally developing to direct.
Around the same time, however, Martin Scorsese was planning to make a film based on Thomas Keneally’s book, Schindler’s Ark. The two would trade projects, Spielberg renaming the latter to Schindler’s List. He’d also remain a producer on Scorsese’s Cape Fear, but took his family-friendly name off the credits.
Now, there’s none of that. We’ve got Spielberg, we’ve got Scorsese, and they’re both executive producing a surprise TV take on the Cape Fear story.

One of Martin Scorsese's finest and most fascinating films is getting new life. Deadline reports that a new TV re-imagining of "Cape Fear" is in the works, with cinema legend Steven Spielberg and TikTok star Martin Scorsese on board in their first TV collaboration. A TV series based on Universal’s “Cape Fear” is in the works with Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg and Nick Antosca.
The show, which is in development from UCP, a division of Universal Studio Group, and Amblin, would mark Scorsese and Spielberg’s first ever TV project together. They executive produce with Antosca, who is also the showrunner and created true crime and horror dramas like “Channel Zero,” “The Act” and “Brand New Cherry Flavor.” Other executive producers include Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey from Amblin Television and Alex Hedlund from Eat the Cat.
Here’s the logline for the “Cape Fear” re-imagining: “A storm is coming for a pair of married attorneys when an infamous killer from their past gets released after years in prison. A tense, contemporary thriller that examines America’s obsession with true crime in the 21st century.”

Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg are heading back to Cape Fear.
The two legendary directors are executive producing a new “Cape Fear” series currently in development, IndieWire has confirmed; one that offers a new twist on Scorsese’s 1991 film with Robert De Niro and Nick Nolte and the 1962 classic with Gregory Peck and Robert Mitchum.
The show doesn’t have a network just yet, but it is a hot property currently fielding bids from several interested buyers, making it the first major TV series auction since the writers and actors strikes ended. Bidding is said to be in early stages.
Nick Antosca is the creator and showrunner on “Cape Fear.” Antosca is developing it under UCP, which is a division of Universal Studio Group, and producer Amblin Television. Antosca is also executive producing alongside Alex Hedlund for their Eat The Cat banner, and Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey will executive produce for Amblin Television.

At one point in time, Steven Spielberg was set to direct the thriller Cape Fear, while Martin Scorsese was attached to direct the historical drama Schindler’s List. Then Scorsese decided to step away from Schindler’s List, a choice that coincided with Spielberg deciding that Cape Fear was too violent for him. So the directors traded movies – resulting in Scorsese directing Robert De Niro and Juliette Lewis to Oscar nominations for Cape Fear and Spielberg turning Schindler’s List into a Best Picture winner. Now Deadline reports that Spielberg and Scorsese are teaming up to executive produce a TV series adaptation of Cape Fear, with Nick Antosca on board as executive producer and showrunner.
Antosca’s previous credits include Hannibal, The Forest, Channel Zero, Brand New Cherry Flavor, Antlers, The Act, Candy, and A Friend of the Family.

In 1991, director Martin Scorsese remade 1962’s Cape Fear, based on the 1957 novel The Executioners by John D. MacDonald, for Steven Spielberg‘s Amblin Entertainment. It appears they’re returning to the IP: Deadline reports that Scorsese and Spielberg have teamed with “Channel Zero” creator Nick Antosca for a new series that’ll take an unconventional approach.
“Cape Fear” marks the first ever TV collaboration for Scorsese and Spielberg, who are executive producing the project from creator, executive producer and showrunner Nick Antosca.
The series is described as a “a tense, contemporary thriller that examines America’s obsession with true crime in the 21st century. In it, a storm is coming for a pair of married attorneys when an infamous killer from their past gets released after years in prison.”
In every iteration of Cape Fear so far, the plot sees a lawyer’s family tormented by the criminal he helped put in prison.
