C. Thomas Howell in Side Out (1990) is now available on Retro VHS Blu-ray from Mill Creek Entertainment. It can be ordered Here.
Check out this trailer:
It’s an endless summer of fun when C. Thomas Howell and Peter Horton hit the beach at Malibu in this high-spirited tribute to the California lifestyle.
The sizzling sands of Malibu set the scene as Monroe meets a beautiful marine biologist and is recruited to play California’s hottest new sport, professional volleyball. Soon he’s competing against the big boys (played by pro-circuit stars Sinjin Smith and Randy Stoklos). But it’s only when Monroe teams up with Zack Barnes (TV’s “Thirtysometing’s” Peter Horton), the original “King of the Beach,” that he learns just how much fun success – and teamwork – can truly be.
Side Out stars C. Thomas Howell, Peter Horton, and Courtney Thorne-Smith

The Nora Ephron-directed romantic comedy Sleepless in Seattle turns 25 today. For Gary Foster, who first read the cross-country romantic comedy as a Jeff Arch spec script and fought for three years to keep its vision intact in the usual creative collisions of star-driven studio films, here provides an illuminating look at how a good spec evolved into a terrific movie.
On a hot Saturday afternoon in 1990, I sat down on a small couch in our baby daughter Kayla’s room to read a script entitled Sleepless in Seattle. Dave Warden, an agent representing a new writer named Jeff Arch, had submitted it to my company. I give most submissions 25 pages, and if I’m not in by that point, I put it down and pick up the next. That afternoon, I never noticed the 25-page mark. I zoomed right past it, drawn into this story about a widower, who...

Mark Ruffalo had a take-your-kids-to-work-day while filming Thor: Ragnarkok in Australia.
The 49-year-old actor -- who portrays Bruce Banner/The Hulk in The Avengers and Thor films -- shared with Et's Cameron Mathison during a junket for the comic book sequel that moviegoers may spot his three kids, Keen, 16, Bella, 12, and Odette, 9, in one of the scenes.
"I don't know if you can see them ...but they were in the car in the party scene where Thor (Chris Hemsworth) is taking [Bruce] Baner (Ruffalo) around this crazy new place," he revealed. "They were in that scene, they were dressed up as Dr. Seuss characters basically. They were on set all day."

I don’t know if you’re anything like me, but I can often spend hours upon hours trawling through iTunes looking for new movies to buy… Usually I’ll randomly come across a title I haven’t seen in years and use the “Cast & Crew” links to make my way down the rabbit hole to the more obscure side of Apple’s digital movie service.
Now whilst many will decry that iTunes is a terrible VOD service due to Apple’s desire to lock its audience to their platforms, if you have an Apple TV or iPad be aware – there are some truly obscure films hidden away in the depths of the vast collection of movies. Some of which have been made available in the UK for the first time since VHS and a Lot that have been added to the service in their original uncut form!

The party has gotta end sometime ... and for the sport of volleyball, it's Lights Out ... so says C. Thomas Howell -- who starred in one of the most famous volleyball movies ever! Howell -- who starred in "Side Out" twenty five years ago -- was leaving Lax when he told us the sport bit the dust in the '90s ... along with Walkmen and pagers. Btw, Howell's "Side Out" co-star Peter Horton went on to...

Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield see your Zooey Deschanel and Joseph-Gordon-Levitt adorable singing video, and raise it with German.
The "Amazing Spider-Man" stars -- and rumored Bf/Gf -- got together to record a promo for a German television channel? A German movie theater? A Tumblr devoted to swoon-y things and awesomeness? Who's To Say?! What matters is that this happened and it's cute and you're going to watch it and clutch your heart (or an imaginary strand of pearls) and send it to all your friends. Maybe even make a Gif! It's Friday, after all, and you've had a long week.
Starring Garfield and Stone, as well as Rhys Ifans, Martin Sheen, Sally Field and C. Thomas Howell ("Side Out," represent!), "The Amazing Spider-Man" is out in theaters on July 3. Marc Webb -- the man responsible for giving the world Zooey and JoGo in the first place in "(500) Days of Summer" -- directs.

"Cross my hooker heart of gold"
The last episode of Reven8e wasn't the most exciting, and basically set up the next story arc, which will focus on Toe (The Original Emily) and Net (New Emily Thorne), but this week's episode was filled with soapy goodness, thanks to the complicated "relationship" of Tyler and Nolan, and a couple of surprising turn of events.
Toe has decided to stick around for a while, much to the chagrin of Net, and ingratiates herself in Jack's life (it's easy when you can rock a bikini the way she does). Net pays her a visit, and tells her in no uncertain terms that she can't stay. Toe responds, "I don't remember asking for your permission."
Things go from the sublime to the Wtf? when Net decides that her only option is to contact her ... Japanese mentor Satoshi. Wait ... what? He disguises himself as a...

The aim here is not to nitpick or criticize. It is simply to indulge in affectionate thought experiments and tangents related to movies that I have enjoyed over the years. What are the unspoken motivations, the unexplored avenues, and the seemingly insignificant details that lie between the frames? Oh, and if you have not seen the movies I write about in this column, you are a little behind the times, but I offer a spoiler warning regardless.
Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade
"That belongs in a museum!"
Per Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, this was a mantra and fervently held sentiment for cinema icon Indiana Jones from a very young age. If we are to take Indy's beliefs based on presented actions, archaeological artifacts belong in spaces where they are available for public viewing, appreciation, and education. I can only assume that this was a value instilled by his father,...

One of the worst-kept movie secrets in recent memory concerns who will be the villain in Sony's new 'Spider-Man' reboot - everyone and their brother has already guessed that it's going to be The Lizard. Websites like The Wrap were reporting that Rhys Ifans had been cast as Dr. Curt Connors (The Lizard's secret identity) back in October, but actor C. Thomas Howell has now made it even more official with a recent appearance on the Retroradio podcast.
Howell, a stalwart of '80s fare like 'Side Out' and 'The Hitcher,' has been cast in a small role in Marc Webb's 2012 film. Hit the jump for the actor's update on the project.

I grew up watching movies. Unfortunately for me, and my job, it wasn't a rich resume of epic adventures and award-winning fare. It was a collection of retro nostalgia, horse racing, weekly Friday night movies to see the mainstream fare, and anything by C. Thomas Howell. Yes, I think between '85-'95 I saw everything with Ponyboy. My favorite, of course, being Side Out.
In reflection, I'm sure the myriad of terrible B movies and fluff fare is the reason I have such a deep appreciation for cult films. Like any parent-kid relationship, you're taught a set of values, you apply them with your own tastes, and then the parental units recoil. I'm sure they never thought that a childhood with Arsenic and Old Lace would inspire later years with David Lynch, Bruce Campbell, and The House of Yes.
But it was also a very particular affair. At first it...
