International sales agent Incredible Film has secured global distribution rights to “Amsterdamned II,” the sequel to Dick Maas’ 1988 cult classic, “Amsterdamned.” Veteran Dutch actor Huub Stapel reprises his role as detective Eric Visser, who once pursued a serial killer through the Dutch canals three decades ago, as he is brought back from retirement by a revelation that shakes him to his core. In the sequel, also directed by Maas, Visser and fellow detective Tara Lee fight against an evil that threatens them and the city of Amsterdam.
The film is a coproduction from the Netherlands’ 2CFilm and Parachute Pictures and Belgium’s Potemkino. Production is set to begin later this year, with release scheduled for 2025, in time for the city of Amsterdam’s 750th anniversary.
Daniëlle Raaphorst, CEO of Incredible Film, said: “Three decades ago, the chilling horror ‘Amsterdamned’ gripped audiences around the world. Now, we are delighted to be representing the sequel.

For a community of die-hard, genre-loving film fans who grew up crouched over tiny glass TV screens, the holy grail has arrived. Some of the cult film world’s most influential (and most obscure) releases, projected large and loud, on an IMAX screen the size of a building.
Bristol’s new(ish) Forbidden Worlds Film Festival returns for a second year, from 18th-21st May, with a frankly ridiculous line-up of big-screen treats. Three strands that very much speak for themselves: Creature Creators (stop-motion pioneers and practical effects wizards), Video Shop Archives (old school cult classics), and Michelle Yeoh (nuff said). Kicking off with a Stan Winston double-feature on opening night, showcasing Winston’s iconic effects work in The Terminator, before a rare theatrical screening of his directorial debut Pumpkinhead, Forbidden Worlds is really going there with unusual, one-off events.

Moloch opens in 1991 as a young girl feeding a mouse is frightened by the sounds of what sounds like an extremely violent attack in the room above her. Soon blood is raining from between the floorboards and pouring down the walls onto the terrified girl.
Thirty years later, Betriek is now grown up and has a daughter of her own, Hanna (Noor van der Velden). It was Betriek’s grandmother that we heard being killed in the prologue. Her father Roelof was traumatized by her death and still drunkenly waits for the killer to return. Her mother suffers from an unknown illness that subjects her to what seems to be seizures. Add in the death by heart attack of Hanna’s father and...

(And it's going to be called... Dick Maas: The Documentary) In my home country of the Netherlands, there are plenty of people and filmmakers who are interested in creating genre entertainment, but the industry is generally loath to support them. "Don't try to be Hollywood" is often the advice given to people. It is therefore almost a miracle that we do have one director who has been making genre films for over 35 years, often with financial success and international acclaim. His name: Dick Maas. You may know him from films as The Lift, Amsterdamned, Saint, or his recent creature-feature Prey (reviewed here), which was considered his biggest flop until it suddenly started breaking records a few weeks ago in China, with over a million...

Amsterdamned, The Lift and Sint director Dick Maas returns to Dutch cinema screens this Halloween season with his latest piece of crowd pleasing fun Prey (Prooi). And what's next in a career that's seen the director terrorize his home town with killer elevators, killer Santas ad a killer diver lurking in its canals? A killer lion, of course. Maas' Prey turns a big cat loose on the streets of Amsterdam and it's one hungry kitty. Throw a one legged, wheelchair bound hunter into the mix and you've got a recipe for fun. We shared the teaser for this one a while back but with theatrical release coming in just a couple weeks the full trailer is now also available. Check it out below!...

Dick Maas (Sint, Amsterdamned, The Lift) has released the first teaser for his lion-loose-in-Amsterdam movie, Prey. And it looks super fun! Do you need to know more than that? The teaser teases that the lion has already run 26 miles in one night. His "hobbies" have something to do with people. Is he seeking revenge? Does he want justice for past crimes by humanity? I have no idea, but I'm eager to find out. Prey is due in October. Have a look below....

[Updated with English subtitled trailer.]Dutch maverick Dick Maas (Amsterdamned, The Lift) has an enormous success last year with his 80s throwback slasher film Sint. Released on these shores as Saint, the film is a bloody romp that reimagines Saint Nicholas as a villain riding through Amsterdam looking for bloody revenge and it broke box office records when released in The Netherlands before rolling out to great success on the festival circuit worldwide. And now Maas has reteamed with his Sint producer to create Quiz, a darkly comic thriller.A famous gameshow host is being harrassed in a restaurant by a strange man who claims to have kidnapped his wife and daughter. A morbid game ensues in which the gameshow host turns out to be the candidate. The...

Anyone disappointed by the brutally curt but otherwise impressive Rare Exports wrapping up just as it was getting going will be appeased by Saint's full-throttle approach to yuletide action. Cult Amsterdamned director Dick Maas pulls out all the stops to deliver an unashamedly trashy treat; he's even unafraid to put child characters in real peril, via a midway orphanage inferno that proves all bets are off. The film might not feature the actual Santa Claus, but the uniquely Swedish mythology makes for a refreshing change, and there are...

Dick Maas, probably best known in the horror community for his classic 80s films The Lift and Amsterdamned, is back behind the camera for another fright flick that takes a beloved religious figure and turns him into something… evil in Saint (Sint). The celebration of Saint Nicholas on December 5th is the most important tradition in Maas’ home country of the Netherlands, where he is held as the embodiment of virtue and generosity as he brings presents and joy to children every year. Only this Saint isn’t so saintly…
St. Niklas, a bishop fallen out of grace in the Middle Ages, travels with his gang of robbers and thieves, raping, plundering and killing through the countryside. When villagers take the law into their own hands and murder the bloodthirsty bishop and his thugs by setting their ship on fire, Niklas vowed revenge. Now every time there is a full moon on December 5th,...

Before settling in with the crazy seasonal import from The Netherlands called Saint, you need some basic information ... if you're American, that is: 1. Saint Nicholas and Santa Claus are not the same person. 2. Saint Nicholas is allowed to kill children whenever a full moon happens to fall on December 5th. 3. Saint Nicholas takes great pleasure in his work. A certifiably insane piece of holiday horror from prolific filmmaker Dick Maas (Amsterdamned, The Lift, Killer Babies), Saint (aka Sint) is a slick, sick, and unapologetically twisted concoction of horror, action, and (of course) comedy. Fans of the nasty stuff will find a bunch of gruesome kills, the action junkies will get two or three...

I unfortunately missed filmmaker Dick Maas while he was in town to promote Saint at the Tribeca Film Festival but he was kind enough to answer some questions via email. Here.s what he had to say:
Could you please introduce yourself and tell us a little about Saint?
Hello MovieGeeks, my name is Dick Maas and I.ve been making movies for the past 30 years, mostly in Holland. I.ve made comedies, like the Flodder series and Killer Babes, action flicks like Amsterdamned and horror/thrillers like The Lift, Do Not Disturb, Down and recently Saint.
Saint is a thriller/horror about the St. Nicholas legend. St. Nicholas is the biggest yearly celebration in Holland. It takes place on the 5th of December. Children put their shoes in front of the chimneys and when they were not naughty in the past year, they find them filled with presents the next morning.

"At first it was about neighborhood," begins Eric Hynes in the Voice. "Then it was about stars, parties, and supersizing. But finally, for its 10th incarnation, the Tribeca Film Festival (April 20-May 1) seems to be about movies. Gone are the superfluous, attention-sucking Hollywood premieres (Tom Cruise on a Jet Ski, anyone?), and few are the big-name, low-quality vanity projects. Several years into a vital slimming of the slate — the fest topped out at 176 films in 2005; this year, it's a manageable 93 — Tff remains New York's largest film survey."
To celebrate Tribeca's 10th, we're running a retrospective of some of the best films the festival's shown over the past decade here at Mubi. Happy viewing.
"A notoriously uneven assemblage of titles, Tribeca aspires toward something like a mini Toronto, but despite, in recent years, bringing such important films as Jia Zhangke's Still Life and Mohammad Rasoulof's The White Meadows...

Just hear those sleigh bells jingling, ring ting tingling too. Come on, it’s lovely weather for a sleigh ride together with you…It’s going to be that time again: Christmas, or if you’re from Holland, on December 5th it’s the Sinterklaas tradition (Sinterklaas-avond – here). If you’re rogue Dutch filmmaker Dick Maas, you’re sick of this crap and that my friends is the fuel behind Saint (Sint), his new horror film about the Sinterklaas tradition.
The film darkly and humorously distorts the popular traditions of Sinterklaas and portrays him as a ghost who murders large numbers of people when his annual celebration night coincides with a full moon. It’s not unlike many of our own Yuletide slashers as seen in Christmas Evil and Silent Night, Deadly Night, and director Dick Maas takes some time away from the Tribeca Film Festival to talk with Killer Film about the film,...

Haddonfield. Crystal Lake. Springwood. Woodsboro. What do they all have in common? These quaint little havens were terrorized by a slasher instantly removing them from any tourist destination guide. And unfortunately, you might have to add Amsterdam to that list (sorry four-twenty, fiends) because St. Nicholas is coming to town in the Dutch horror film Saint and he's ready to carve up the community with a lethal, golden staff and his army of decayed, armed assistants (Black Peters). Saint is the latest horror picture from filmmaker Dick Maas, whose previous credits include The Lift (later remade as The Shaft starring Naomi Watts and directed by Maas), Amsterdamned , Killer Babes and a Young Indiana Jones Chronicles episode set in Transylvania. Released last year...

Got a hankering for a new anti-holiday cult hit and a love for eighties style splatter comedy? Well then, Dick Maas has the movie for you.
The latest from the director of Amsterdamned and The Lift is Sint - a lovely little piece that posits that jolly old Saint Nick isn't so jolly after all and that he doesn't give a damn whether you're naughty or nice, he wants to kill you either way.
With the Dutch release fast approaching a new TV spot has arrived, check it below.

Dutch director Dick Maas has recently gotten in the news due to his upcoming supernatural slasher-flick "Sint" featuring an evil Saint Nicholas as its improbable villain.
But improbable villains are almost par for the course when Mr. Maas makes a genre movie: his action thriller "Amsterdamned" featured a mutant scuba diver and the horror film which got him famous back in 1984, "De Lift" featured a maliciously malfunctioning elevator.
Yes, an elevator.
Then again, as Adam Ant used to sing "ridicule is nothing to be scared of" but plenty of people are scared of elevators, or at least creeped out a bit by them. Taking this cue, Dick Maas based his story more on Italian nightmares and less on technical feasibility, crafting a gorgeous film which may have had a ludicrous premise yet was at times truly scary. Make no mistake: "De Lift" was The Dutch "event" movie of that year...

I admit it. Christmas is my favorite holiday. I love presents, the whole family thing, decorating trees, and demon incarnations of Santa Claus that conduct wholesale butchery of children. I mean, I know I'm not alone in that, right?
Right?
Shit.
Anyway, the "bloody massacre during the holidays" genre has been sorely lacking since the days of Silent Night, Deadly Night (Santa's Slay and . Well thankfully, those wacky Dutch have found a way to fill that hole, with the upcoming Sint, synopsized thusly:
"Saint Nicholas is not the good-hearted children's friend as people think he is. In reality he is a cruel bloodthirsty bishop who, whenever there's a full moon on December 5, will try to slaughter as many children as possible."
And you know what? I'm kind of digging the trailer (even though the subs aren't great and sometimes kind of hard to read). But I like the atmosphere, the...

How do you think conservative culture warriors that rant and rave every year about the so-called "War on Christmas" are going to react when they find out about this new wave of dangerous Santa movies coming out of Europe and Scandinavia of late? For that matter, how do you say Silent Night, Deadly Night in Dutch? Just say Sint, I suppose.
Opening this December in the Netherlands is Sint, a horrifying new spin on the legend of St. Nick from Dutch director Dick Maas (The Lift, Amsterdamned). His take on the man we know as Santa has him galloping on a horse and giving the Jason Voorhees treatment to everyone he deems naughty (i.e., anyone unfortunate enough to cross his path).
