Word of a remake of John Carpenter's 1986 bonkers action flick "Big Trouble in Little China" came out as early as 2015. The remake was set to star Dwayne Johnson, presumably playing Jack Burton, the character previously played by Kurt Russell. Johnson reportedly wanted John Carpenter to be involved in the remake, but the director was never officially invited to anything. "I only know what I read in the papers," he said. Carpenter has been famously indifferent to other filmmakers remaking his movies, once saying that he loves it when it happens, as he gets paid for not having to do anything. Three years later, in 2018, it was announced that the new "Big Trouble" would be a sequel and not a remake, but such definitions have become hazy in a nostalgia-driven marketplace. The film's producer, Hiram Garcia, referred to the new film as a "continuation," rather than a sequel. Po-tay-to, po-tah-to.

Kurt Russell was born on March 17, 1951, in the Los Angeles suburb of Thousand Oaks. He started acting at the age of 12 on various television programs. In the 1960s he was signed to a 10-year contract with Walt Disney, which led to his appearance in many of the Disney films of the era. According to the late Robert Osborne of TCM (via Wikipedia), he became the studio’s top star of the 1970s.
Those Disney appearances did typecast Russell a bit and he would be stuck playing many roles that were somewhat wholesome in nature. He would turn that image around when director John Carpenter (fresh from the surprise blockbuster success of “Halloween”) cast him in the lead role of Elvis Presley in a TV movie called “Elvis!” That television film was really the first time Russell was taken seriously as an actor and it earned him an Emmy nomination. John Carpenter's "Escape From New York" is a cult classic for a reason — it rules. Released in 1981, "Escape From New York" is a down-and-dirty sci-fi action pic in which New York City has become a giant maximum security prison. As bad luck would have it, an attempted hijacking of Air Force One forces the President (Donald Pleasence) to eject from the plane in an escape pod. Guess where he ends up? Yep — NYC, baby! The Big Apple! The militarized government wants to save the President and retrieve a top-secret briefcase he has cuffed to his wrist, but New York is too dangerous to simply enter for your average rescue mission. So the powers-that-be strike upon a simple plan: they force criminal Snake Plissken (Kurt Russell) into doing the job.
Snake, a cool dude with an eyepatch and a whispery voice, has no real choice in the matter: a device...

The 1990s are regularly regarded as the era of the high-concept thriller. In the wake of eighties smashes like Jagged Edge and Fatal Attraction, audiences tended to flock to these kinds of movies, although it’s worth noting they quickly spun off into two different mini-genres. There was the erotic thriller genre, whose queen was definitely Sharon Stone, with movies like Basic Instinct and Sliver, but there was also the so-called yuppie thriller.
These movies often centred around upwardly mobile middle-class couples who wind up in the crosshairs of a maniac who wants to dismantle their lives. Fatal Attraction was arguably the first of these. Still, many more would follow, including Pacific Heights, which featured Michael Keaton in a memorably evil role, Bad Influence (with Rob Lowe), Internal Affairs (which revitalized Richard Gere’s career), Malice, and the great Single White Female. But, of the genre, one of the most effective was 1992’s Unlawful Entry,...

The 80s. It has given us so much in pop culture. From the best Saturday Morning Cartoons, the greatest action figure series of all time, and some of the most quotable movies. You can’t talk about 80s films without thinking of movies like Back To The Future or The Breakfast Club. If someone says, “Goonies never say die,” then you know it’s someone you can hold a conversation with.
The flip side of this is that over the last 40 years (gulp!), society has changed. Somewhat for the better, but there are still downsides. Now, when you look back at some of your favorite 80s films, you might find that maybe they haven’t aged as well as you had hoped. What childhood memories can we ruin by figuring out which 80s movies haven’t aged well?

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters may owe its greatest debt not to Toho, nor even the previous entries in the Monster-Verse, such as Godzilla: King of the Monsters and Kong: Skull Island. No, the most important movie for the new show from Apple TV+ is Soldier. Yes, Soldier, the 1998 sci-flick directed by Paul W.S. Anderson.
Because in Soldier, Kurt Russell played the same character as his son Wyatt, as the latter portrays the 11-year-old version of the lifelong warrior Todd 3465. The duo repeat that feat in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters by playing Lee Shaw at two points in the man’s life. The elder Russell plays Shaw in the present, as part of the research group Monarch, dealing with the revelation of monsters in 2014’s Godzilla. The younger Russell plays Shaw in the 1950s, connecting the series to the golden age of Kaiju cinema.

Radical with Eugenio Derbez built on its smash opening in Mexico to hit no. 5 at the U.S. box office with a super $2.7 million at 416 theaters. The Pantelion/Participant release had delayed its debut Stateside by two weeks to skirt The Eras Tour juggernaut, allowing word of mouth to build for the drama about a dedicated teacher in a troubled Mexican border town.
Priscilla by Sofia Coppola is looking at an estimated $5 million weekend and a no. 4 box office slot in a major week-two expansion to 1,359 screens. The film with Cailee Spaeny as Priscilla Presley and Jacob Elordi as Elvis now has an estimated cume of $5.3 million in one of the year’s best expansions and Sofia Coppola’s second best of her career. Ticket sales were led by a younger female audience — 75% under 35 and 65% female.
Alexander Payne’s The Holdovers from Focus Features, starring Paul Giamatti, grossed $600k on 64 screens.

After October began and ended with two monstrous box office hits, November starts a bit quieter with a few lower-key releases that may have trouble making a significant mark. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
A24 will be releasing Sofia Coppola‘s “Priscilla,” starring Cailee Spaeney as Priscilla Presley and Jacob Elordi as Elvis Presley, nationwide on Friday after a platform release into four theaters in New York and L.A. this past weekend, where it averaged a solid $33k per location. Adapted by Coppola from Priscilla Presley‘s 1985 memoir “Elvis and Me,” the movie shows a darker side to the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll in the toxic and abusive treatment of his younger wife.
Obviously, two things going for “Priscilla” is Coppola’s own popularity as a filmmaker going back to 1999’s “The Virgin Suicides” and more recent films like “The Bling Ring” in 2013, although...

Exclusive: Ahead of its U.S. release on November 3, Eugenio Derbez-starrer Radical is off to a great start in Mexico. The film, which won the Festival Favorite Award when it premiered at Sundance in January, opened last weekend in Mexico, selling 631.7K tickets, outdoing the sophomore frame of Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, as well as that film’s debut the previous session; both in terms of admissions.
Released by Videocine, this was the biggest local-language opening in Mexico since the Covid era began in both grosses and ticket sales. Radical grossed Mxn 43,339,719 ($2.36M) across the October 20-22 frame, which is just slightly under what The Eras Tour brought in across its second weekend. That’s because the Taylor Swift movie is being sold at event pricing with tickets going for Mxn 215 a pop versus Mxn 69 for Radical. The latter also had the highest per-screen average of the October 20-22 session.

While movie remakes are popular across genres (Anyone remember the 2018 remake of Garry Marshall's "Overboard"?), the horror genre is especially susceptible. The genre is unique insofar as its scares endure more than most. Where comedies and action movies, for instance, are inextricably linked to their time of release, a scary movie is a scary movie. With a fresh coat of paint, what was new three decades ago can seem fresh again.
A curious contemporary trend has emerged in which relatively recent titles are remade just a few years after their original releases. Released just 14 years after the first "Cabin Fever," the remake used the exact script as the original. Recently, horror filmmaker Anthony Diblasi released "Malum" in select theaters. "Malum," a remake of Diblasi's 2014 indie "Last Shift," isn't quite a shot-for-shot remake so much as it is a reimagining. With more money and more experience, Diblasi revisits his demonic fable in a new context.

Goldie Hawn thinks the Oscars have gone overboard with the politics.
The “Overboard” actress and Academy Award winner reflected on what she feels is a lack of glamour in modern Oscar ceremonies ahead of the 95th annual awards event this Sunday, March 12.
“It used to be elegant,” Hawn said in a Variety cover story. “I’m not old-fashioned, but sometimes jokes are off-color. And I’m missing reverence. Things have become politicized. I want to see people in awe. I want to see people believing again. I want to see people laughing more in a way that isn’t just at someone else’s expense.”
Hawn, who won the Best Supporting Actress award at the 1970 Oscars, shared that she does “regret” not attending the ceremony. “It’s something that I look back on now and think, ‘It would have been so great to be able to have done that,'” the “Cactus Flower” actress said,...

Strangely, Elvis Presley and Kurt Russell's careers are intrinsically linked. For more than four decades, Russell has been a Hollywood mainstay. With his chiseled chin and rugged good looks, the actor looks like he was born to be a Hollywood A-lister. His performance in 1981's "Escape from New York" put him on the map as one of Hollywood's hottest action heroes. With subsequent films "Silkwood" and "Overboard," Russell would prove he had the acting chops to succeed in any genre.

Despite rubbing elbows with one of the most popular entertainers of the era, Russell would spend the next 16 years toiling away in film and minor television roles, waiting for his big break. Netflix is back with a new bag of holiday offerings to distract you from cooking and wrapping presents, and we’ve got the run-down of the best and worst, although this is an exceptionally good batch of Christmas movies. With that in mind, we’ve done our best to help you find what best suits your holiday vibe, so you know what to curl up with at the end of a long day spent trying to remember how to socialize after three winters’ worth of partying on Zoom.
The below list is ranked from what is, in our opinion, the best holiday treats Netflix is offering to the worst.

Lindsay Lohan is back! Her latest movie “Falling for Christmas” is currently the number one film on Netflix, quickly rising to the top following its November 10 debut. It’s her first major acting role since “Among the Shadows” in 2019. She plays Sierra Belmont, a young and newly engaged heiress who experiences a skiing accident. After being diagnosed with amnesia, she finds herself in the care of the handsome lodge owner and his daughter.
See Lindsay Lohan rocks a classic for her holiday return on Netflix
Chord Overstreet, George Young, Jack Wagner and Olivia Perez are all among the ensemble, but it’s clearly Lohan’s return that sparked headlines and interest in the film. While many cheered for her return, others said she was destined to fail. Lohan definitely shut down the haters, but what are critics saying about the actual movie?

It's that time of year again. It's November, which means we're getting all the heartwarming Christmas movies we can shove into a stocking. As promised this time last year, Lindsay Lohan has returned to acting in "Falling for Christmas." The new rom-com decked in pine boughs and twinkly lights is on the way to Netflix, though you could be forgiven for thinking it was from Hallmark Channel or Lifetime.
In the film, Lohan plays a hotel heiress who dresses up like Nordic Barbie and treats people like dirt. Then she gets into a skiing accident and loses her memory. Taking care of her is the "blue-collar lodge owner" played by "Glee" star Chord Overstreet. Do you see where this is going? Of course, you do. You've seen "Overboard." Amnesia plus a hot-but-not-rich guy necessitates a stuck-up wealthy lady who learns the value of family and love. Plus, he has a daughter,...

Even though Ticket to Paradise may play like pages from its script were ripped right out of the romantic comedy playbook – even to the point of featuring subtle callbacks to fare like the recent unfortunate remake of Overboard to other, more consequential outings of the genre, like Pretty Woman – the tandem of Julia Roberts and George Clooney somehow manages to elevate the film above being just a mediocre offering to something slightly more endearing and entertaining.
In the film, Clooney and Roberts play exes David and Georgia who are on a joint mission to stop their recently college-graduated daughter, Lily (Kaitlyn Dever), from marrying someone she just met on vacation in Bali, Gede (Maxime Bouttier), and throwing away her future as a lawyer. But, of course, they must pretend to go along with the nuptials until they can successfully sabotage the wedding and bring their lovestruck daughter home.

Anna Faris revealed the identity of the director she previously accused of harassment: late comedy helmer Ivan Reitman.
During Faris’ podcast “Unqualified,” the actress said that Reitman “slapped my ass” during production on the 2006 romantic comedy “My Super Ex-Girlfriend” and “yelled” at her on her first day on set (via Deadline). Faris felt “angry, hurt, and humiliated” by the encounter.
“Ghostbusters” director Reitman died in February 2022 at age 75.
“One of my hardest film experiences was with Ivan Reitman,” Faris told Lena Dunham during the podcast episode. “I mean, the idea of attempting to make a comedy under this, like, reign of terror, he was a yeller. He would bring down somebody every day…and my first day, it was me.”
“My Super Ex-Girlfriend” also starred Luke Wilson, Rainn Wilson, Uma Thurman, and Reitman’s daughter, Catherine Reitman, who went on to create Netflix comedy “Workin’ Moms.”

Lindsay Lohan is back and singing “Jingle Bell Rock” once more — but it’s not a direct tribute to “Mean Girls.” This time, it’s for her new holiday rom-com, “Falling for Christmas.” In this movie, it’s less “Mean Girls” and more “Overboard.”
In “Falling for Christmas,” set to hit Netflix this November, Lohan plays Sierra Belmont, the self-described “spoiled daughter of the hotel magnate.” But for her part, she really is trying to change that, openly saying that that’s not all she wants to be remembered for. Flash forward, and she’s being proposed to on top of a mountain — a very snowy and windy mountain.

Eugenio Derbez will explore a lesser-known aspect of Hollywood history with his latest TV project.
The actor and producer (Apple TV+’s Acapulco, How to Be a Latin Lover) will star in and executive produce a comedy with the working title They Came at Night, which is in development at TelevisaUnivision’s streaming platform Vix+. The project is a workplace show about the cast and crew who made a Spanish-language version of Dracula in 1930 — filming at night and using the same sets and costumes as Tod Browning’s English-language version.
“I have not worked in scripted Spanish language TV comedy for well over ten years and was looking for something really special to come back,” Derbez said in a statement. “This story really jumped out at me because it tells the story of Latinos always having to accomplish more with less resources and harder conditions.

In between his mega-hit “Back to the Future” sequels and his Oscar juggernaut crowdpleaser “Forrest Gump,” Robert Zemeckis directed the sublime black comedy “Death Becomes Her,” released to theaters 30 years ago on July 31, 1992. In a summer of mostly safe, audience-friendly comedies like “Sister Act” and “HouseSitter,” “Death Becomes Her” entered the marketplace an oddball piece of dark, absurdist humor that didn’t fit into a clear category. Let’s take a moment and reflect on the “Death Becomes Her” 30th anniversary.

With its list of new releases for July 2022, HBO Max is stepping up its TV game. Not that any entity associated with “It’s Not TV, It’s HBO” would ever not bring the televised goods, but the small screen is of particular consequence this month.
The middle of July is jam-packed with TV goodies like docuseries The Anarchists (July 10), rescued animated project Tuca & Bertie season 3 (July 11), and the latest Nathan Fielder creation The Rehearsal (July 15). The real heavy hitter arrives later on though. Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin premieres on July 28 and will introduce the next generation of the Pll franchise. It doesn’t have a release date yet but July will also host season 3 of the delightful Harley Quinn at some point.
HBO Max’s movie offerings aren’t as deep this month. The Bob’s Burgers Movie (July 12) and We Met In Virtual Reality (July 27) are really the only originals of note.

Getting movies made in Hollywood is never easy. But considering he’s the writer, director and star of the highest-grossing Spanish-language film ever made, it would be fair to expect that the path to high-profile projects would be a bit more straightforward than Eugenio Derbez has experienced.
Derbez, who established himself with Mexican sitcoms in the early 2000s, broke out at the box office in a major way with 2013’s Instructions Not Included, the comedy he co-wrote, helmed and stars in as a playboy who has to suddenly care for his 6-year-old daughter. Buoyed by the success of its 100.5 million worldwide gross, a number that has yet to be topped by another Spanish-language film, the star moved to the U.S. the following year, finally ready to relish the attention he hadn’t previously received during Hollywood dit-downs.

It’s unlikely that anyone was holding their breath for an English-language reimagining of Francis Veber’s 2006 French hit “La Doublure,” a lovable if trite farce in which a porter and a supermodel fake a romantic relationship in order to prevent a PR disaster. But with the help of some doting cultural specificity, a charming cast and sunshiny Los Angeles skies, “Come As You Are” director Richard Wong’s “The Valet” proves that a remake can still be a welcome thing these days, even in a world oversaturated with them.
Written by Bob Fisher and Rob Greenberg (the duo behind the “Overboard” remake), this sweet-natured and good-humored rom-com-with-a-twist should easily find reasonable streaming success upon its May 20 launch on Hulu. This version of the story brings its distinctly “Notting Hill” beats to Tinseltown, where the modest and socially awkward Antonio works as a valet, parking the fancy cars of a...

Arguably, Mexican film and television superstar Eugenio Derbez has already conquered the American market. His 2013 film “Instructions Not Included” is the highest grossing Spanish-language film in the U.S. and grossed 100 million worldwide. He earned a SAG Award as part of the “Coda” ensemble cast, which went on to win the Best Picture Oscar, and he co-starred in the hit action-adventure “Dora and the Lost City of Gold.”
However, the attempts to launch him as a romantic leading man — in 2017’s “How to Be a Latin Lover” and 2018’s “Overboard,” a remake of the 1987 comedy — haven’t exactly lit the world on fire, even if they have been profitable.

Teen queen Lindsay Lohan most famously led Tina Fey’s star-studded “Mean Girls,” and while the fandom is still undying 18 years later, Lohan’s take on her role is very different than you may think.
During a video interview with Vogue‘s Life in Looks reliving her best fashion moments, the “Falling for Christmas” star revealed that she didn’t see her character Cady Heron exactly as the victim of a high school clique, here called the Plastics, played by Rachel McAdams, Amanda Seyfried, and Lacey Chabert.
Instead of playing “damaged” Cady, Lohan hoped to portray head mean girl Regina George, before the role ultimately went to McAdams.
“The story behind me playing Cady in ‘Mean Girls’ is really unknown by a lot of people. I wanted to play Regina,” Lohan told Vogue. “Because I had just come off of ‘Freaky Friday,’ and I really wanted to play like a pretty,...

For some reason, out of the crop of new movies headed to Amazon Prime Video this month, many of them are associated with the 1980s. Not just movies from the Me Decade, although there are certainly a handful of classics from the Reagan era, but also movies that feel like they could have been made in that period – including a creature feature about rampaging dragons and a music-world spoof worthy of the Zaz team.
There’s also, of course, one of Steven Spielberg’s most powerful recent films and a 90s staple too. Either way, this month is best enjoyed with solid access to a time machine of your choosing (DeLorean not required but obviously encouraged).
Die Hard With a Vengeance 20th Century
