We toe the line sometimes here at JoBlo Horror Originals with what movies we discuss. Some things can qualify for multiple shows like a Black Sheep or a Deconstructing on the same movie. Sometimes there are enough behind the scenes shenanigans to give it a proper Wtf or maybe its adapted from a story. Not today, though. Today is something that reflects the true nature of this show. I know some viewers get bummed when they see some movies, even some of their favorite movies, get covered multiple times, so today’s hopefully different. I’m hoping that today will be a best horror movie that you never saw for most and...

Clive Barker is someone horror fans know and love, someone that can easily be referred to as a Master of Horror. To some, he is more than that. The man has created entire universes of characters in his writing, deep with lore and some truly disturbing elements. Early on, his work became the source of film adaptations, but let’s be honest, they weren’t all exactly successful in bringing his words to the screen. Rawhead Rex was a bit of a mess; Underworld has issues, so why should he trust his Hellbound Heart to anyone else to direct?
And this is basically how Hellraiser (watch it Here) was born. Kinda. There is, of course,...

Dolly Parton grew up in the mountains of East Tennessee, the perfect backdrop for scary stories. She remembers being told her fair share of terrifying tales as a kid. Here are a few of the stories that scared the “Coat of Many Colors” singer.
Dolly Parton | Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images Dolly Parton was scared to get out of bed for fear that Raw Head Bloody Bones would get her
Parton’s mother, Avie Lee, used to tell her kids stories about “ol’ Scratch Eyes” and “Raw Head Bloody Bones” to scare them into getting into bed at night.
“Mama would tell us that Raw Head would get little children who didn’t go to bed when they were supposed to,” Parton wrote in her first memoir, Dolly: My Life and Other Unfinished Business. “Even those among us who were old enough to suspect she might be making all of...

The 1980s were a period of overabundance in culture and films; it’s a period most remember as being colorful, loud, and filled with bright personalities on television and in film. This is an exaggeration created through media for the sake of a glossy reality being depicted. In fact, the 1980s were very… brown. And Rawhead Rex (watch it Here) is basically the cinematic realization, if that makes sense. Let’s explain this:
Most people remember all the colorful fashion, the flashy looks, the pretty people, and horror films like The Monster Squad, Chopping Mall, and even Evil Dead, which were fairly brightly colored horror films with varying levels of the blood being used.

One of the great things about horror movies is that they offer a universal experience. No matter where you go in the world, the same things are considered scary, which is why great horror movies are made all over the world. Today we’re going to be focusing on ones made or produced in Ireland, so if you’re looking for a fright, try one of these out.
The Sleep of Death
The Sleep of Death was released in 1980 and was written and directed by Calvin Floyd. It’s often described as a Swedish-Irish film, thanks to the prevalence of Swedish cast members. The film is based on the 1872 novella The Room in the Dragon Volant and is sometimes called The Inn of the Flying Dragon, in reference to the title of the novella. The story follows a young Englishman called Colonel Gaillard, played by Per Oscarsson, who goes to France to pursue a woman,...

Fireball XL5
It’s always a gratifying feeling when Silva screen produces another title in their successful Gerry Anderson collection. This time around, they have focused on the 1962-63 series, Fireball XL5 (SILLP1595).
The black & white puppet television series followed the missions of Fireball XL5, a vessel of the World Space Patrol in the year 2062. Commanded by Colonel Steve Zodiac, XL5 travels the universe encountering alien civilisations and defending planet Earth from interstellar threats. It was produced, like most other Anderson productions, in Supermarionation, using puppetry techniques that captured the imagination of a generation.
The Fireball XL5 soundtrack has been newly compiled, mastered and designed by the creative and committed team at Fanderson – The Official Gerry And Sylvia Anderson Appreciation Society.
The album features 24 tracks from 16 episodes, including the Fireball XL5 main theme and single version. In the opening theme,...

As a veteran in the world of special effects makeup, Steven Kostanski (who contributed to projects like It (2017), Crimson Peak, Pacific Rim, Resident Evil: Retribution, and more) knows exactly how important great effects are in the world of genre cinema. That much is evident from his previous directorial efforts like Manborg, Leprechaun Returns, and The Void. It’s also a huge component of his latest film project, PG: Psycho Goreman, which features a ruthless demonic overlord brought to life by actor Matthew Ninaber.
Daily Dead recently caught up with Kostanski, and he discussed the inspiration behind both the story and the character of Psycho Goreman, the design process of the film’s titular character, and more. Look for PG: Psycho Goreman in select theaters and on various digital and On Demand platforms starting today, courtesy of Rlje Films.

We’ve had some excellent special editions of Hellraiser from Arrow Video, including recent Blu-rays of the original 1987 Clive Barker-directed movie and its first sequel. The genre specialist distributor are now following this up though with a limited edition steelbook of the whole Hellraiser trilogy, which follows on from “The Scarlet Box” special collection they put out in 2016. We’ll be able to get our hands on the latest collection in January 2020, as well as the chance to claim one of 500 Pinhead statuettes that come with the Blu-ray set.

Back in 1986 Clive Barker was a hot property. His successful, six-volume collection entitled Books of Blood were major international bestsellers, as was his first full-length novel, The Damnation Game. In fact, Barker was one of the early pioneers of the splatterpunk movement in horror fiction, helping to popularize the genre throughout the mid- to late-eighties and into the nineties. Many of his novels and quite a few of his short stories have been adapted for the screen, including Rawhead Rex, originally a short story collected in Books of Blood, Volume 3.
Unfortunately for Barker—and perhaps very fortunate for horror film fans—the first two films made based upon Barker’s work turned out so badly that he not only disowned the films but decided he would direct the next film himself. That film was the seminal Hellraiser (See? Good for us!). The two films Barker, to this day,...

Horror fans don’t need a time-sensitive excuse to indulge in uncanny and unnatural literature, but there’s nothing quite like steeping oneself in a novel of the strange as the October winds blow, bringing half-imagined whispers of phantoms from the pages. Some books evoke this sense more effortlessly—and frighteningly—than others. Here are seven chilly, liminal examples of literature’s power to bring us across the veil.
Books of Blood by Clive Barker: While technically five volumes, Clive Barker’s masterwork of short horror fiction brings the perfect mixture of pulpy violence, grotesque monstrosities, and transcendentally disturbing themes. His tales take the reader through gritty urban wastelands, liminal spaces of decay or transgression, where the rejected pieces of society manage to make a life—and encounter monsters in the process. Particularly poisonous treats include the titular story, a nightmarish diatribe on the roadways of ghosts; “Rawhead Rex,...

In the 1980s, Clive Barker introduced horror fans to a world where pleasure and pain intertwined in Hellraiser (based on The Hellbound Heart), and in that same decade in Books of Blood Volume 3, he created a violent creature known as Rawhead Rex, who jumped to the screen to prey upon a rural town in George Pavlou's 1987 film of the same name. Now, 30 years later, Kino Lorber is bringing Rawhead Rex back to select theaters this summer with a new 4K restoration that will also be featured on a new home media release this fall.
The exact dates for the theatrical re-release and special edition Blu-ray / DVD of Rawhead Rex, as well as the home media release's special features, have yet to be announced, but we'll be sure to keep Daily Dead readers updated as more information is revealed.
In the meantime, we have the official announcement from Kino Lorber below,...

Can We Please Just Get A Comic Book Adaptation Of ‘Jericho’ Already?
And no, I’m not talking about that one TV show. I think they already did a comic of that and that got cancelled too.
No, I’m referring to the video game ‘Jericho,’ written by Cliver Barker. It is seriously gut-wrenching stuff. I mean, it wasn’t a great game. But it would make a hell of a comic book.
Nightbreed #1
Writer: Marc Andreyko
Artist: Piotr Kowalski
Publisher: Boom! Studios
Price: $4 (Digital)
I’m the worst Cliver Barker fan in existence. I’ve literally only read one book by him (‘The Inhuman Condition’ aka ‘Books of Blood Volume IV’) and I’ve seen a grand sum of One movie based on his works: ‘Midnight Meat Train’ (‘Rawhead Rex’ doesn’t count). And yes, this means I’ve never seen ‘Candyman,’ though I’ve listened to the...

Today is of course St. Patrick’s Day, which essentially means that us horror fans are allowed the freedom to do two things, without incurring the wrath of judgment that doing those two things typically incurs; not only do we get to drink all day, but it’s sort of an unwritten rule that we must plop our asses on our couches and watch as many of the films in the Leprechaun franchise as we can possibly endure. A great holiday this one is, to say the least.
That said, if you’ve already seen all the Leprechaun movies, and don’t have much interest in watching them again, then have no fear, because we’ve got you covered. We came up with a list of films to accompany you on today’s couch-riding, beer-drinking escapades, all of which are worthy alternatives to the Leprechaun films.

Fans of horror and extreme music should be familiar with London artist Dan Mumford, whose distinctive artwork has been used in everything from revival movie posters to t-shirts for bands like death metallers The Black Dahlia Murder. I recently chatted with Dan regarding his influences, his art, and his work on the recent rerelease of The Wicker Man.
Your work runs a very broad spectrum when it comes to subject matter, from horror/gore to post-apocalyptic to more portrait-based pieces like “Sisters.” Does any one subject resonate more with you as an artist?
I think it depends on the place I’m in at that time. Post-apocalyptic landscapes and ideas do always excite me with the possibilities of where I can take it, but at the same time its really nice to do something a little more serene and portrait like. I don’t have quite as much interest in...

Beginning in 1984, Clive Barker kicked off his fan-favorite Books of Blood series, which were largely responsible for making him a household name amongst genre fans. Comprised of six volumes in total, each of the books contained five or six tales of horror fiction, and several of those stories have been given the feature film treatment, over the years. Rawhead Rex and Candyman both started out as stories found within the pages of the Books of Blood, and more recently The Midnight Meat Train - which was a part of the original volume - was turned into a movie.
30 years after the release of that original volume, and six years after the release of the movie, The Midnight Meat Train returns in the form of a Definitive Edition hardcover book, which is jam-packed with all-new material, including an afterword written by Barker, a copy of the film's screenplay, never-before-seen photos and...

Chris Alexander has snapped up some of the coolest jobs in horror journalism, and now he's creating cool new ones to take on as well. After a stint writing for Rue Morgue magazine, he moved on to become editor-in-chief at Fangoria, building a résumé between the two that is enough to make the rest of us genre hacks jealous. But then he went and resurrected Gorezone (which he edits), and now, in conjunction with horror/exploitation film legend Charles Band, he's helped create (and edit) Delirium, a magazine devoted to the film catalogs of Empire Pictures and Full Moon. It's with tongue planted firmly in cheek that I talk of jealousy, of course; Alexander is in the position(s) he's in through a combination of talent, hard work and an absolute love of the stuff he's writing about. That love shines through in Delirium #1, a debut issue that's as bold,...

Clive Barker's short story Jacqueline Ess: Her Will and Testament joins the growing list of film adpatations from Barker's anthology novels The Books of Blood. Previous film adaptations include Rawhead Rex, Candyman, Lord of Illusions, Quicksilver Highway, The Midnight Meat Train, Book of Blood and Dread. Toronto-based outfit Raven Banner Entertainment has optioned the story and will produce the film. Barker's Seraphim Films is on board to serve as executive producers. Jacqueline Ess tells the story of a beautiful woman with the ability to horrifically change people's body shapes simply with her mind. Her ability gives her the power to grant men the ultimate sexual experience, albeit one that always proves fatal. It's a story of sex, power, and the extremes that await us at the...

When I was a kid, there were two movies that terrified me as a kid. This wasn’t the creeping dread I felt when I watched Night of the Living Dead or The Twilight Zone. No, this was outright fear, the kind that sends you under the covers, sleeping in a sheen of sweat with the lights on. And maybe it sounds silly but as someone with a highly overactive imagination who lived in the woods, I don’t find it silly at the time. But now when you’re older, you look back and feel stupid about some of the things that terrified you or the film just isn’t that good. The...

Since horror, as a genre, tends to have a smaller viewing audience than action films, romantic comedies, and tear-jerking love stories, it seems like the available titles are at a higher risk for going on manufacturing moratorium. When that happens, fans of the genre frequently turn to eBay bidding wars, scouring pawnshops, and even trying to locate bootleg copies of the title in question for no less than a king’s ransom. Vigilant collectors, such as myself, tend to keep an eye on titles we suspect are at risk for going out of print... for example, Code Red and Blue Underground both tend to have a good number of titles go out of print at any given time. Staying on top of titles destined for moratorium makes the cash one must fork over for a copy of an in-demand title much less painful; often when a film first falls out of production,...

Zombies, vampires and werewolves, oh my! Classic monsters are always a good way for horror filmmakers to go, but sometimes we see more... unique... beasties on the screen. And when they go well (and even when they don't), they're some of the most memorable characters in the genre.
In celebration of the Irish sci-fi comedy film Grabbers, which hit VOD and other digital outlets on July 19 and contains some pretty wild monsters of its own, we've compiled a list of Horror's Top 13 Craziest Monsters!
As always, we'd like to start out with some honorable mentions. Slither and its old school relative Night of the Creeps both gave us a swarm of memorable leech-like monsters. The Host dropped us into an unexpected nightmare on a typical South Korean afternoon with a very unique movie monster. And even though he ended up going mainstream and had his own Saturday morning cartoon, The...

So You Think You Can Dance: 5 Awesome Dance Scenes From Horror Movies
I love horror films. I love watching people getting sliced and diced by a slasher, devoured by the undead, ripped apart by Rawhead Rex… I love it all. But sometimes I just wanna watch people dance. Dirty Dancing? That’s my shit. Fame? You know it! Every once in a while, though, certain horror films catch lightening in a bottle by including an Epic dance scene. And today, I am gonna bring you five of the best!
5) Tanya Robertson in Sleepwalkers
File this one under “Cute as Hell”. I always thought Madchen Amick was completely adorable, and it kind of saddens me that she never really became a bigger starlet in our beloved horror genre. Watch her cut a rug here in the theater lobby while jamming to a pretty awful cover of “Do You Love Me?...

A filmmaker like Victor Salva could be perfect for a new reimagining of Rawhead Rex. Hes capable of bringing gnarly monsters to life without infusing inadvertent laughs to the screen. Hes also terrific with visuals managing some bone chilling night shots while exercising some gorgeous lighting techniques. Thats a great skillset for a recipe of this nature. The whole childtarget issue could propose some issues but thats a discussion for another day...

Years ago, I remember some of my horror fanatic friends casually dropping the name “Rawhead Rex.” I recall thinking that it sounded like some bodily torture technique your brother would use to gain control of the television remote, not unlike an Indian Burn, Purple Nerpal, or Wet Willie. The larger question is, of course, why up until a few years ago I had never seen this movie. Simply put, Rawhead Rex has always gotten pretty shafted with distributions. Now most people know it vaguely as “the film where the monster pees on the priest.” Made in 1986 in the British Isles, Rawhead Rex is based on a short story penned by Clive Barker in his Books of Blood series. Directed by George Pavlou, Rex marks Pavlou and Barker’s second and last collaboration. Their first was on 1985’s Transmutation which Barker has disowned. He also has harsh feelings about Rex, stating...

When Eclipse Comics ended the Tapping the Vein series after the fifth volume, it wasn’t because they’d run out of material to adapt – Vein only scratched the surface of the short stories Clive Barker had published under the Books of Blood title. Eclipse continued to adapt those stories in a series of standalone releases beginning in 1991 and going right up until the company’s closure in 1993.
Eclipse may have jettisoned the title, but their subsequent adaptations shared many similarities with those that had fallen under the Tapping the Vein masthead. Creators from Vein popped up in these releases, most notably writer Steve Niles (who scripted stories in all but one of these releases) and artist John Bolton. The Vein volumes each featured two stories, and two of these new releases did as well (Rawhead Rex was paired with Twilight at the Towers, while The Life of Death and...

Occupy Midian is where the monsters are. But that’s later on down the road. This is the story of a man, an icon to many, a shadow filled with light. A man who created the ultimate shaggy-dog monster film and has been resurrected to cross the countryside unspooling it’s cinematic treasures for the world to see. It was a long road and begins the same way all stories begin … with a man.
That man, is Clive Barker. His work is worthy of study over and over again, for as long as anyone can. His work reaches into a deeper subconscious that others can only dream of reaching. He moves people, he changes people. I remember reading the “Books of Blood,” which was my first introduction to Clive (like most others), and being moved. My eyes pored over every page, soaking in and reveling in every single gory detail.

"Men or money? Whenever I cry it's usually men or money" Since 1987, I have been a huge Clive Barker fan. I collected Coenobium (The Clive Barker fanzine), had all the books and even owned Transmutations and Rawhead Rex. So when I caught wind of Nightbreed, I was crazy excited. I've come across a lot of film that don't get the respect they deserve. Escape from L.A., Slumber Party Massacre II, RawHead Rex, you name it. One film that I was looking forward to a while back was My Soul to Take. This was the first film Wes Craven had made in years, so as you can imagine, I was very antsy for this to be released. Back when producer Charles Band ran Empire Pictures, he made some really high-quality B-movies. Besides Re-Animator (which is probably the most famous of all of them), he made Ghoulies, Troll, Rawhead Rex, Intruder, Prison, From Beyond, and more.
