After helping to pioneer Italy’s budding giallo genre throughout the 1970s with influential titles like The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, The Cat o’ Nine Tails, Four Flies on Grey Velvet, and Deep Red, Dario Argento took a brief sabbatical from the lurid thrillers to explore supernatural elements in Suspiria and Inferno. When the latter failed at the box office, he made a triumphant return to gialli in 1982 with Tenebrae (sometimes spelled Tenebre; originally released in the US as Unsane).
While his American contemporaries were trying to come up with inventive instruments of death to propel slasher films, Argento was designing more lavish ways to film his kill scenes. Suspiria remains his crowning achievement, but Tenebrae finds the filmmaker bringing his honed visual panache to the giallo sandbox in which he made a name for himself. The result stands not only as one of Argento’s strongest efforts but also a landmark giallo work.

The Italian maestro is back! Yes, Dario Argento, one of Italian cinema’s great horror filmmakers has stepped back behind the camera for Occhiali Neri (Black Glasses), the director’s first movie since 2012’s much-ridiculed Dracula 3D, which is actually based on a script he wrote with Franco Ferrini that was shelved in 2002 when the films original production company, Cecchi Gori, filed for bankruptcy.
Black Glasses sees Rome under siege from a serial killer who has strangled three prostitutes with cello rope. His latest victim is destined to be Diana, a luxury escort who frequents the hotels of Via Veneto. One night, the maniac chases her in his white van and rams her, sending her crashing into another car containing a Chinese family and the young son Chin.

Dario Argento is back, baby. The Italian "Master of Horror" has a decades-spanning career in the horror genre, enjoying especially great notoriety in the 1970s and '80s with his visually striking and exquisitely violent giallo films. From the Animal Trilogy — "The Bird with the Crystal Plumage" (1970), "The Cat o' Nine Tails" (1971), and "Four Flies on Grey Velvet" (1971) — to his Three Mothers Trilogy, consisting of "Suspiria" (1977), "Inferno" (1980) and "The Mother of Tears" (2007), to once-banned Video Nasties "Deep Red" (1975) and "Tenebrae" (1982), Argento's work has influenced modern genre filmmakers from Eli Roth to James Wan. Argento has...

Hello, dear readers! Before those of us in the States get ready to gobble down our Thanksgiving dinners later this week, we have a brand new batch of horror and sci-fi home entertainment releases to look forward to first. One of this writer’s favorite films of all time, Philip Kaufman’s Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) is getting the 4K treatment from Kino Lorber this Tuesday, and Arrow Video is resurrecting both The Snake Girl and the Silver Haired Witch and Phantom of the Mall: Eric’s Revenge on Blu-ray as well (this is also very exciting news in my world). Arrow is also re-releasing a handful of other titles—The Cat O’ Nine Tails, The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, and C.H.U.D.—and the first season of Rod Serling’s Night Gallery is headed to Blu-ray as well.
Other releases for November 23rd include Chupa, Lair,...

Hello, dear readers! We’re back with a brand new assortment of horror and sci-fi home media releases this week, and as we creep closer and closer towards Halloween, there are definitely a handful of titles coming out on Tuesday that would be fun to check out as you get ready for the spooky season. Arrow Video is keeping busy with a handful of releases, including a 4K version of Dario Argento’s The Cat O’ Nine Tails and Blind Beast. And speaking of Argento, Blue Underground is showing Two Evil Eyes - his collaboration with George A. Romero - some love with their 4K presentation of the film. Larry Cohen’s A Return to Salem’s Lot is finally getting a Blu-ray, and if you missed the latest Conjuring film in theaters earlier this year, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It is headed home on multiple formats this week as well.

Prior to the advent of the so-called “eco-vengeance” genre, Italian cinema used animals, or at least the symbolism they naturally encapsulate, in the most disparate contexts, from those coherent with their nature to more unusual and weird derivations. With regard to the singular use of animals in Italian cinema, a reference is certainly owed to Dario Argento’s first films—L’uccello dalle piume di cristallo, Il gatto a nove code, and Quattro mosche di velluto grigio—which were followed by huge commercial success that encapsulated what Argento had learnt from Alfred Hitchcock and the Nouvelle Vague, as well as from the literary heritage of Raymond Chandler, where animals appeared in the titles embodying the characters’ gestures, modus operandi, and personalities—the animal as a metaphor representing the diabolical “human” nature. Although the presence of animals in the titles is often justified, of course, by some narrative solution or gimmick,...

This week on the couch we have James Roday and Jimmi Simpson watching The Cat o' Nine Tails. James is best known as Shawn Spencer on Psych, which recently wrapped up its eight-year run. He just finished his feature directorial debut, a horror-comedy called Gravy. Jimmi is best known as "that guy who you've seen in everything." Some of his recent projects include House of Cards, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and Knights of Badassdom. The Cat o' Nine Tails was only the second film directed by horror auteur Dario Argento. A rather straightforward crime thriller starring Karl Malden as a blind journalist, Cat o' Nine Tails is considered a giallo film, a sort of stylized Italian mystery film that takes its name from the cheap pulp mystery novels of the first half of the 20th century. "Giallo" is Italian for "yellow," and pulp paperbacks originally used cheap, yellow covers.

Though the majority of Dario Argento's earlier films are more or less universally loved by horror fans, not even the biggest supporter of his work can deny that the Italian maestro has lost something along the way.

The film arrives on DVD and 3D Blu-ray on January 28, 2014, via IFC Midnight with SRPs, respectively, of $24.98 and $29.98.
It's been 400 years since Count Dracula's (Thomas Kretschmann; Wanted, Valkyrie) beloved Countess Dolingen passed away, leaving the immortal bloodsucker forever abandoned. But when he discovers that local newlywed Mina...

Veteran actress Catherine Spaak - star of Italian classics like Dino Risi's The Easy Life and Dario Argento's The Cat O' Nine Tails - will star in a new gore movie, The Thousand And One Deaths (Le Mille e Una Morte) directed by Elisabetta Marchetti. The story is about a horror film-maker who decides to explore the world of snuff movies, with real torture and death. Spaak will play the mother of the protagonist while the legendary Sergio Stivaletti - who worked with all the major genre directors of Italy, from Lamberto Bava to Michele Soavi, Dario Argento and Sergio Martino - will take care of the bloody special effects....

★★☆☆☆ In only his second film as director after The Bird with the Crystal Plumage (1970), Dario Argento was determined to demonstrate new facets of his talent, enthusing that The Cat O' Nine Tails (1971) - starring James Franciscus, Karl Malden and Catherine Spaak - would be a different beast to its giallo siblings. Sadly, the only discernible difference between this film and his masterful debut seems to be that only one of them is any good. Events begin abruptly with the saintly Franco Arno (Malden) and his niece overhearing a delicate conversation between two shadowy men in a parked car.

Lucio Fulci, though trained as a doctor, directed costume dramas and sex comedies but made his name in blood-soaked gialli (such as the notorious New York Ripper) and zombie movies influenced by Romero but with a crazy Italian slant (who can forget the zombie vs shark sequence in Zombi 2?).
Fulci could certainly concoct a maelstrom of visual style, tracking, panning and zooming all at once, and fully exploiting the giallo tradition of kinky sexuality, fetishistic extreme close-ups, decadent lounge music and crimson death. One regrettable trope that came to dominate his later gore movies, however, is a tendency to linger lovingly on his prosthetic effects until they not only lost all conviction through over-exposure, but went beyond their narrative point, exactly like the protracted sex scenes of a porno.
Happily, this tendency had not fully manifested itself by the time of Seven Notes in Black (1977), whose nastiest moment occurs right at the start,...

It's been close to a year since we've had any sort of update on Federico Zampaglione's Tulpa, but today we have a few screenshots and more to share on the Italian Giallo homage, which begins a five-week shoot in Rome on March 5th.
First, however, on February 25th Zampaglione will screen the opening sequence of Tulpa in Glasgow at the Film4 Frightfest.
Tulpa is based on a treatment penned by Dardano Sacchetti (The Cat o' Nine Tails, A Bay of Blood, City of the Living Dead and many more masterpieces) and then developed by Federico Zampaglione with Giacomo Gensini.
The film, which promises a lot of extreme gruesome death scenes, is about Lisa Boeri (Claudia Gerini), a rich businesswoman totally devoted to her work. She is alone, without any serious relationship, and while during the day she is almost a cold money machine, at night she becomes another person. Every...

★★★★☆ The third film in Dario Argento's patchy 'animals trilogy', Four Flies on Grey Velvet (1971) is one of the filmmaker's most stylistically satisfying films. Following his astonishing debut The Bird with the Crystal Plumage (1970) and the weak Cat o' Nine Tails (1971), the film has been unavailable for many years due to disagreements with Paramount, with Shameless Entertainment now presenting a near-immaculate restoration to mark the film's 40th anniversary.

Rainer Werner Fassbinder's newly restored Despair (1978) "was one of the hottest tickets in the Classics sidebar" in Cannes this year, notes Dennis Lim in his Los Angeles Times review of the new DVD out from Olive Films, which has also issued Fassbinder's I Only Want You to Love Me (1976). "The relative obscurity of Despair is surprising given its pedigree. It's based on a Vladimir Nabokov novel, adapted by Tom Stoppard, and starring the English actor Dirk Bogarde. Nabokov's story of a Russian émigré, written in the 30s, takes place in Prague. Fassbinder changed the setting to early-30s Berlin, teetering on the abyss of the Third Reich…. Despair is perhaps the most explicit elaboration of one of Fassbinder's recurring themes: the alienation of someone who not only 'stands outside himself,' as Hermann [Bogarde] puts it, but also wants to escape himself and indeed flee the trap of identity altogether.

Dardano Sachetti is a giallo and horror legend. He worked with Mario Bava, Dario Argento and Lucio Fulci on some of their most famous movies. Now the Italian legend has teamed up with an emerging horror director, Federico Zampaglione, to work on a new flick!
We received the press release earlier today and for genre fans this is pretty exciting news. No wonder Zampaglione was keeping his cards close to his chest when we interviewed him recently about his next project.
"The Director of 'Shadow', Federico Zampaglione, has announced that shooting on his new film will begin shortly entitled Tulpa, it will be, according to Zampaglione, "a very bloody and tense Italian thriller with some supernatural elements". Tulpa is written by the legendary screenwriter Dardano Sacchetti, who has worked with all the great Italian horror masters including Fulci, Bava and Argento.

2011 is shaping up to be a great year for Dario Argento fans. Not only are we keeping our fingers crossed that Dario will recapture some of his old magic in his upcoming Dracula 3D, but Blue Underground is bringing the maestro's most classic works to Blu-ray in stunning 1080p splendor.
Fangoria tells us that Blue Underground will bring Argento's 1971 giallo Cat O' Nine Tails to Blu-ray this year alongside the previously announced Deep Red and Inferno. Cat will hit stores later than those others, though, releasing on May 31st.
Fans can look forward to a 1080p HD, 2.35:1 widescreen transfer from the original uncut camera negative, along with DTS-hd 2.0, Dolby Surround 2.0 and DTS-hd mono soundtracks. Extras will be the same as the original Anchor Bay DVD release and the subsequent Blue Underground standard definition re-release:

I know my column on Arrow Video is done, but they keep bringing good news!
Starting with Deep Red in December, Arrow Video have at least six Argento Blu-rays in store for giallo nuts before the end of 2011. They don't all have solid release dates, but they are all in progress. I posted the news and specs on Deep Red a few weeks back, but now we have covers for three more that are on the way!
Rick Melton brings us new custom artwork for Tenebrae, Phenomena (Creepers), and Cat O' Nine Tails. Arrow Video have been dropping artwork on us like crazy, and these are some of the best pieces yet. No word yet on specs or release dates, but I'll update when I get that info. In the meantime, enjoy these cool covers!

Actor Karl Malden, who achieved just about everything possible as an actor, died today at 97. Malden was from a generation of honest, muscular actors. He held his own against Brando in A Streetcar Named Desire and On the Waterfront, anchored over 100 episodes of The Streets of San Francisco and worked with dignity as a pitchman for American Express. ("Don't leave home without it.") Malden hadn't worked regularly since the early '90s, but he remained representative of genuine actors who could embody a wide range of characters, and who found success without matinee idol looks. He was equally committed to his work whether being directed by Elia Kazan (Streetcar, Waterfront), Dario Argento (Cat O' Nine Tails) or Franklin J. Schaffner (Patton). We need a lot more faces and personalities like his, and he will be missed.

The Los Angeles Times has reported that Acting legend and Academy Award Winner Karl Malden has died.
While the versatile actor was most famous for his starring turn in The Streets Of San Francisco and as the man who made "Don't leave home without it" a catch phrase for American Express, he was no stranger to the horror and thriller genres, having appeared in Dario Argento's Il gatto a nove code (1971) aka Cat O' Nine Tails, Alfred Hitchcock's I Confess! (1953), and Roy Del Ruth's 1954 film Phantom Of The Rue Morgue among others.
Born in 1912 in Chicago, Illinois, and raised in Gary, Indiana (birthplace of the recently-deceased Michael Jackson), Malden studied acting at Chicago's Goodman Theatre before moving to New York, where he made his stage debut in 1937. He picked up an Oscar in 1951 for his role in A Streetcar Named Desire, one of many accolades received during his long career.
