Based on the TCM showing of the film there were two jump cuts both during fight scenes. The first is near the end of the Boxer martial arts demonstration in the ballroom scene. It occurs as one of the Boxers with his sword over his head runs at the other two men. The second is when the foreign contingent sabotages the Chinese munitions storehouse. A man jumps from the roof the munitions storehouse to disable a Chinese guard soldier. It happens right as he karate chops the soldier in the neck. It is not clear if these are in the original film or were introduced later because of a bad print or other unknown reason.
Ava Gardner's character is named Baroness Ivanoff. However, Russian women who are or were married use the female form -ova at he end of their name. The character should have been named Baroness Ivanova.
Despite many weeks of campaigning in the Chinese countryside, all units in the relief force arrive in spotless uniforms.
When Maj. Lewis, Robinson and Shiba sneak out to destroy the arsenal during the Chinese victory ceremony, when Shiba runs up the earthwork of the arsenal the ground flexes, revealing it to be hollow.
At the end, Maj. Lewis is joined by Sir Arthur on top of the wall. Lewis asks Sir Arthur, "What time is it?" Sir Arthur replies, "5:30 a.m." But the sun is directly overhead.
When the Chinese army use a large cannon to bombard the legation compound , the little orphaned Chinese girl runs back in the temple she just fled where a large Buddha statue sits to save a little boy. As they run from the temple it blows up and a large rectangular stone comes crashing down behind them but bounces off the ground several times revealing it is a lightweight material not a massive stone.
When Maj. Lewis is retrieving the message from the empress, there are large, fluffy clouds in the back ground. In the next scene six seconds later, they are gone.
The British legation has a substantial military band as seen at the beginning of the movie with the raising of the Union Flag and at the end. The duties of a military band assigned to an embassy was perform at embassy functions. Consequently the British Legation would not have used a Chinese orchestra to perform British/European music at the British Ball, especially music well within the capacity of any British service band.
At the beginning, the German band plays Deutschland Uber Alles, which was not adopted by Germany until after World War I. Germany at that time used the anthem Heil Dir Im Siegerkranz, whose tune is that of God Save The Queen, while Austria-Hungary used the Deutschland tune for its anthem, Gott Erhalte Franz Den Kaiser.
Some of the Chinese words shown in this movie are simplified Chinese, while simplified Chinese were created on 1955, over half a century later than the Boxer Rebellion.
The rifle used by the US Marines in the film is a .303 Lee Enfield British rifle (the "Long Lee Enfield" Mark 1* model introduced in 1899). Contemporary photographs show the US Marines guard of the US Legation in Peking during the Boxer Rebellion using the 6mm M1895 Lee Navy rifle - a much harder-to-find item for movie armorers.
When the flags are shown being raised over the legations at the beginning of the film, the US flag shown has 43 stars. That flag was in use for only one year, 1890-91. By 1900, the year of the Boxer Rebellion, two more states had been added, the last being Utah in 1896, and thus also two more stars.
When the Boxers are coming over the wall, there is a brief scene of US Marines manning a machine gun. That machine gun is a water-cooled Browning M-1917. This was introduced in 1917 during WWI, hence it's nomenclature. This film is set in 1900. US Marines *did*, in fact, have and use machine guns during the siege. But these guns were Browning-Colt M-1895 machine guns, which were distinctly different from the gun shown.
In the opening prologue scenes inside the legation compound the shadow of the top of the camera can clearly be seen passing over a large bass drum in a military band as the camera cranes up marring what is otherwise a very complicated shot covering several areas of action with no cuts.
Captain Hanley's rank displayed on his uniform is that of Lieutenant.
Gerald, the soldier tended by the Baroness, tells her he is from Manchester, England. However, his accent sounds more London area and certainly not Northern.
