With its list of May 2024 releases, Amazon Prime Video is giving us the kindest gift of all: cougar Anne Hathaway.
May 2 sees the premiere of The Idea of You, a romantic-comedy that features Hathaway as a 40-year-old mom finding romance with a 24-year-old boy band singer (Nicholas Galitzine). One of the most distinct characteristics of the new Apple TV+ series “Sugar” is the way it cuts scenes from classic Hollywood films into its present day story of detective John Sugar (Colin Farrell). While the technique is novel, if not experimental, the connections being made are clear: Sugar is a cinephile obsessed with old Hollywood movies, while creator Mark Protosevich’s neo-noir series is steeped in the tropes of these 1940s and 50s black and white films.

It was more than a little heartening to see Roger Corman paid tribute by Quentin Tarantino at Cannes’ closing night. By now the director-producer-mogul’s imprint on cinema is understood to eclipse, rough estimate, 99.5% of anybody who’s touched the medium, but on a night for celebrating what’s new, trend-following, and manicured it could’ve hardly been more necessary. We love this Fritz Lang western even though it’s not particularly good; only in hindsight do we realize that the brilliant director’s intentions may have been compromised. High-key lighting does Marlene Dietrich no favors, but she scores good scenes performing with Arthur Kennedy (revenged crazed cowpoke) and Mel Ferrer (tranquilized gunslinger). Lang fans will be impressed by the gaudy, over-bright restored Technicolor, and we can always blame Howard Hughes.

Around this time, several productions emerged that seemed to mirror the success of “The Untouchables”. “First Shot” was to follow a few years after this, but in the same year came “The Big Heat” also produced by Tsui Hark and starring Waise Lee. All three are set in different periods, but feature a similar narrative around police corruption and a small team of straight cops that refused to succumb. The latter of the three is the finer piece of work but whilst this production is flawed it is not without merit. Kirk Wong is probably not talked about a lot in modern circles. Whilst he doesn’t have the visual flourish of a peak John Woo, or the intensity of a Ringo Lam, his work always has, for the most part, a polish that other contemporaries lack.

Hey, "9-1-1: Lone Star" fans. Welcome to another new week of 9-1-1: Lone Star spoiler scoops. In this particular spoiler session, we're going to tell you about a few scenarios that will be playing out in the next, new episode 12, which is set to hit the airwaves next Monday night, May 10, 2021. Thanks to the lovely people over at Fox, we were able to get a hold of a couple of new, official teaser descriptions for the new episode 12. They put out a press release for it. So, that's what we'll be going over in this article. Let's do it. First thing's first, Fox's new episode 12 press release let us know that episode 12 is officially titled, "The Big Heat." It sounds like episode 12 will feature some very interesting, intense, dramatic, possible action-filled and emotional scenes as Owen is suspected of arson. Exploitation films were thriving in the ‘70s, and everything was excess. Why have one naked woman when you could have four, or settle for one onscreen flaying when clearly several are in order? Maybe watching Mansion of the Doomed (1976) you’d be content with a single case of eye transplant surgery instead of the six offered? Well, you’d be wrong. This is a film that leans heavy on the nihilism and nastiness of the times, with nary an existential answer yet plenty to talk about.
Doomed seems to be the key word in the title that permeates nearly every frame; other titles include Eyes, Massacre Mansion, and The Terror of Dr. Chaney, with the latter perhaps being the most apropos considering the moral dilemma lies completely on his shoulders. As part of a new series, one of our writers finally catches up with the cinematic classic they’ve somehow missed. Today, Stuart Jeffries watches Fritz Lang’s pioneering sci-fi epic
It’s Freddie Mercury’s fault. When he and his lavishly coiffed backing band released Radio Gaga in 1984, the video used footage from the 1927 German expressionist film, Metropolis. Superimposed over Fritz Lang’s visionary cityscape were the foursome in a flying car. Later in the video, they performed a gig before the film’s downtrodden masses. Not many cinematic classics could survive such brutal repurposing. For me, Lang’s film got tainted by association with Queen’s song – one that, ironically enough, became part of the very radio blah it ostensibly indicted.
I’ve always loved the films noirs the German emigré made in Hollywood after the war: The Blue Gardenia, While the City Sleeps, Beyond a Reasonable Doubt.

After several years in television and the release of three romantic comedies including “Seven Years Itch” (1987), Johnnie To comes up with his first Action Movie “The Big Heat”. The extremely rare movie, famously known for its DVD release that falls short in terms of synchronization and subtitling, holds the blueprint of many later films of the director.
“The Big Heat” centers around the policemen John, played by Waise Lee also known as the bad guy from “A Better Tomorrow” (1986) and “Bullet in the Head” (1990), who has to solve the murder of his former partner before he can retire. Like many other of To’s heroes John has a disability. Due to a nerve damage, his hand is temporarily paralyzed.

When WarnerMedia shuttered the classic and foreign film streaming service FilmStruck four months ago, it acknowledged that while the streaming service had a “loyal fanbase, it remains largely a niche service.” The Criterion Collection was nearly half of FilmStruck’s full library in partnership with Turner Classic Movies. But while TCM’s library survives on TV and in WarnerMedia’s upcoming streaming service, The Criterion Collection was an unfortunate casualty.
But on Monday, The Criterion Collection relaunched as an independent, standalone service, The Criterion Channel — and the company is just fine with it being “niche.”
“As idealistic as it sounds, the business is if we really do our job well, we think we can make something sustainable,” Criterion President Peter Becker told TheWrap. “We don’t have to prove that we’re somehow going to be a Netflix killer or something like that in order to be sustainable to survive.

What does an abundantly talented woman have to do to get an Oscar around here? Annette Bening is 0-4 when it comes to winning an Academy Award in the acting categories. If it were up to her fans, there would a law in place that would put an end to this insanity. She might not always choose well when it comes to picking projects – if you haven’t seen 2000’s “What Planet Are You From?,” consider yourself lucky. Of course, it was probably criminal that her performance in 2016’s “20th Century Women” didn’t make more of an impact.

Escaping from Nazi Germany after turning down Joseph Goebbels for the position of Director of the German Cinema Institute, Lang came to Hollywood where he directed numerous film noir classics like Scarlet Street and The Big Heat. The Woman in the Window was made the year before one of his biggest American hits, Scarlet Street.
The Woman in the Window stars Edward G. Robinson as Professor Richard Wanley, perhaps the most unlikely middle-aged man ever to be hit on by a beautiful woman.

Born 94 years ago today, Lee Marvin rose through the ranks of movie stardom as a character actor, delivering mostly villainous supporting turns in many films before finally graduating to leading roles. Regardless of which side of the law he was on however, he projected a tough-as-nails intensity and a two-fisted integrity which elevated even the slightest material. Born February 19, 1924, in New York City, Marvin quit high school to enter the Marine Corps and while serving in the South Pacific was badly wounded in battle when a machine gun nest shot off part of his buttocks and severed his sciatic nerve. He spent a year in recovery before returning to the U.S. where he began working as a plumber. The acting bug bit after filling in for an ailing summer-stock actor and he studied the art at the New York-based American Theater Wing.

"Tell me how I look?" "You look beautiful." Sony Pictures Classics has debuted the new official Us trailer for the festival favorite Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool, which has played at the Telluride, Toronto and London Film Festivals to some great reviews. The film tells the story of Academy Award-winning actress Gloria Grahame, as played by the ever-so-talented Annette Bening. It mainly focuses on her passionate romance with a much younger movie star named Peter Turner, as played by Jamie Bell, and it's based on Turner's actual memoir. The full cast includes Julie Walters, Vanessa Redgrave, Kenneth Cranham, Stephen Graham, and Frances Barber. Grahame starred in The Big Heat, It's a Wonderful Life, In a Lonely Place, and Oklahoma!, and won the Oscar for her role in The Bad and the Beautiful. This still looks great, worth a watch this fall. Bening and Bell leading the way with outstanding performances.

I tell you it’s rough out there on Frisco Bay, especially when you say the word ‘Frisco’ within earshot of a proud San Francisco native. This Alan Ladd racketeering tale could have been written twenty years earlier, but it has Warner Color and the early, extra-wide iteration of the new movie attraction CinemaScope.
