- An investigator is asking Mrs. Gubbins about a William Foster, who was a friend of her stepson Jimmie; both are listed as killed in action during the Great War. It is Armistice Day, 1918, and the war is over. Who should be strolling down the street but Jimmie Gubbins, Bill 'Jones', and another man who has lost his memory. They are ghosts, as the official records list them as dead and not as escaped P.O.W.s. Jimmie's mother is not happy to see that Jimmie is still living, as she has been spending the death benefits, but she is happy to see Bill, as there is a large reward for him. No one knows much about the third one, 'Spoofy', except that he can steal anything at any time. That gets everyone into trouble.—Tony Fontana <tony.fontana@spacebbs.com>
- Immediately after the announcement of the Armistice, British soldiers, friends Jimmie Gubbins and Bill Jones, thought to having been killed in action in having gone missing in action, report to the British War Office in London after escaping from a concentration camp to collect their pay, only to learn about they officially being listed as dead and thus needing to provide proof of their identities. Along the way, they picked up a third shell-shocked soldier who does not know who he is but instinctively has survived by stealing anything and everything he could get his hands on, they as such calling him Spoofy. Going back to civilian life, Bill confesses to Jimmie that he, really William Foster, enlisted in the army under the alias to escape prison time in the US for his criminal activities. As such, he doesn't want to contact his British girlfriend, artist Ann Gordon, in not wanting her caught up in his legal troubles. However, Bill and Jimmie discover that Ann has been living in the same rooming house as Jimmie's stepmother, an amateur fortune teller, the house owned by the family of Jimmie's naive girlfriend, Peg Woofers. What they don't know is that opportunistic Mrs. Gubbins, who has been living off Jimmie's death benefits and thus is not too happy to see him, has discovered that an American detective is offering a £1,000 reward for information as to the whereabouts of Bill Jones aka William Foster, she determined to get the reward money. Her problem is that she can't remember the name of the detective and has lost his contact information. Things only get more complicated for this collective with Spoofy's latest theft.—Huggo
