- A precocious orphan from Central Asia comes to America to find his long lost mother. Along the way he befriends a down on his luck small time hustler, and together they set in motion a daring scheme to solve all their problems. However, things don't go according to plan.

The world of myths and folklore eventually conflict with the harsh reality of the world of adults, who are faced with their own personal problems and dilemmas.

- The Lake tells the story of a little girl named Jyldys who lives with her family in a village by the Issyk-Kul. Her life is harsh. Her peers make fun of her because she rarely talks and often stays in her own world. The only comfort she finds is in the company of an old wise man, Temirkul, who once was her father's teacher. Ever since Temirkul's own daughter drowned in the lake he holds onto the old legend about fish that embody the souls of those who are gone. The lake is truly sacred to him. When his wife dies, he has the idea to lay her body in the lake instead of burying her in the ground. Jyldys' father on the contrary is dedicated to old traditions and calls his former teacher's ideas insane. He believes the only way to help him is to pledge his own land to organize a proper funeral for his deceased wife.
- Single commander of a student dormitory intimidates inhabitants with her authority. She is quite opposite in relation to her secret daughters and dreams of having a husband. But once there is a man in her life the world collides.
- The film tells about the life and tragedy of the Kyrgyz village, it focuses on simple young guy. Being expelled from his native village, he takes away the daughter of a local lord ("bai" in Kyrgyz language) with him, but is overtaken and beaten almost to death. He was destined to find himself and his fate, in order to reunite his people again.

The loan sharks harass the family, even to the point of writing "home for sale" on the exterior of their house. To the couple, every second is urgent, but their conversations are concise; their actions plain. With occasional silences and pauses, the film indifferently watches the couple's pressing circumstances, and paradoxically such indifference adds to the tension. Driven to a dead end, each makes the best choice for themselves. Yet ironically their choices are incompatible, and this irony shows the present state of Kyrgyzstan.

Kubat finds himself torn between his overwhelming desire to save the sick writer's life and the pressure to help his kin.

Despite most villagers not liking him, Azat repairs the family home and repays the money his father owed. One day, Choro, who was imprisoned because of Murat, arrives and the most important question about Murat's will is decided.

But she discovers that the latter has a mental disease. Then the baby arrives...
- Malsat, a famous professional Kök Börü player gets expelled from a champion team for refusing to play on an injured horse. Upon returning to his native village, he finds out that his villagers' land is in danger. He decides to assemble a team from non-professional players and participate in the country's most prestigious Kök Börü Championship Cup.

Shima, Kycha and Baton belong to the third category, and use a stretch of fallow ground to smuggle goods in their home-made four-wheel drive. Pati bumps into the threesome soon after her arrival in Dzhabana, when she recognizes her freshly stolen camera in the hands of its new owner: Baton. Pati strikes up an ambiguous relationship with the gang. She joins their tours as an observer at first, but soon takes a more active part. Then Shima comes up with a scheme to smuggle a stolen luxury vehicle: a cross-border wedding procession with the bridal couple in the limousine and Pati playing the bride. But the exhilaration of playing cops and- robbers vanishes abruptly when they discover they are to take back home a small package with content lethal enough to tear the group apart. One member of the gang is only interested in the money, another longs to be on the right side in the eternal struggle between Good and Evil. And involvement in that confrontation can be fatal, whatever the eventual outcome.

Father, a computer science teacher and a former alcoholic, is trying to establish a new life. But his father is not satisfied with his position in this village, because now he is a "heap-kuyo" - this is how the Kyrgyz speak unflattering words about a man who lives with his native wife ... Eldiyar, every day, goes to a stop and waits for a bus coming from the city - he waits for his mother to return. And every day the bus arrives without mom. And only after leaving the bus, Eldiyar goes to play with the rest of the guys. And then one day, my mother gets out of the bus. Eldiyar is beside himself with happiness. But he still does not know that his mother came to say goodbye to him, perhaps forever. Azamat is forced to fight every day with his cousin uncle, the father of Eldiyar, for an unfair accusation of arson of hay. But he also cannot reveal the true culprit, his friend, because then he will get even more. The intertwined lives, the thirst for profit, the pride and other problems of adults slowly and imperceptibly begin to affect children's destinies, leaving a bitter taste of wormwood. The smell of wormwood in every Kyrgyz and Asian is associated simultaneously with a bitter taste and a tremulous sense of childhood.
