- The Simon brothers are called in to assist A.J.'s idol, legendary private detective Sam Penny, who is hell-bent on recovering a fortune in diamonds that were stolen thirty years ago.
- A.J. and Rick were at a restaurant when the owner is killed. And while they didn't actually see the incident, they saw a man standing over him with the weapon. The prosecutor whom they know, who is using the case for exposure, is determined to see the man convicted. But they eventually realize the man may be innocent and the prosecutor also knows it but is apparently using them to get someone else.
- Rick poses as a patient in a mental hospital in order to protect a brilliant scientist with multiple personalities.
- When a well-known food critic is found dead, it looks to be accidental but AJ suspects murder because he was drinking California wine. Rick and AJ go undercover as cook and waiter at a prestigious restaurant to learn the truth.

- When a man who's going through a messy divorce hires Rick and A.J. to locate a man who could give vital testimony, they find him bring him to court, he testifies and his wife's alimony suit is dismissed. Later they learn that their client and the man they were hired to find were in cahoots so that he wouldn't have to pay his wife a divorce settlement. When they are unable to prove their client's collusion and Brown tells them to let it go. They decide to turn Brown's cousin Lucky a con man who's just been released from prison. Brown warns them that Lucky is not to be trusted and after they approach him, he is approached by some people whom he owes money to and offers them what he's going to get from Rick and A.J.'s plot.
- Jerry Orbach gives a classic performance as a talk-show host closely modeled on Morton Downey Jr. -- a highly conservative, highly combative man who whips his audiences into frenzies (all pre-staged to attract viewers). The host actually has a smart, brave side which he tries hard to conceal -- but he saves Cecelia's life when both of them are menaced by a stalker. When a fight breaks out in the studio during a taping (exactly mirroring a fight on Geraldo Rivera's talk show the very day before this episode was broadcast) someone in the overhead lighting grid takes advantage to start blasting away at the host with a huge revolver. A.J. and Rick identify the stalker and start hunting for him as he goes over the wall into an adjacent empty studio, but can they stop him before he kills the talk show host, who also went next door?
- Rick and AJ are asked by their favorite prosecutor Janet to keep Frankie safe until her grand jury testimony. Frankie, a compulsive gambler, knows the workings of mobster Sid Castle's operation but her addiction may prove fatal.
