Mr. Southard was a decorated veteran of three wars (WWII, Korea and Vietnam), and served as a member of the Underwater Demolition Team, or Frogmen as they were called, for the majority of his naval service. The US Navy assigned him to the movie set so the producers could achieve authenticity for the film. He appears on screen several times in the "ocean shots" as a double for the stars. He married the former Shirley Berry of Birmingham and was the father of four children. He passed away due to heart failure on 19 December 1995.
