If, like me, you grew up reading The Hardy Boys (or Nancy Drew) and The Boxcar Children, and you also have a soft spot for Twin Peaks and other comforting yet disturbing Lynchian dreamscapes, then you should find a lot to enjoy within the quaint and creepy pages of Kris Bertin and Alexander Forbes' Hobtown Mystery Stories Vol. 1: The Case of the Missing Men. The Star Trek universe, cosmic ballet that it is, goes on — in addition to a film franchise reboot from Simon Kinberg, Paramount has announced a new live-action series starring (holy crap) Holly Hunter, titled Star Trek: Starfleet Academy.
Hunter, late of Mr. Mayor and Succession (though she has more credits than we can count), will play the captain and chancellor of Starfleet Academy. "It feels like we’ve spent our entire lives watching Holly Hunter be a stone-cold genius,” said co-showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau (Nancy Drew) of the Emmy and Oscar winner. “To have her extraordinary authenticity, fearlessness, sense of humor, and across the board brilliance leading the charge on Starfleet Academy is a gift to all of us, and to the enduring legacy of Star Trek."...

We horror fans are a highly opinionated bunch. But when you make your career and reputation around the genre – both in music and film – it’s even more elevated. Take Rob Zombie, who has never been one to shy away from his opinions on horror cinema both brilliant and whatever Gus Van Sant was trying to pull with Psycho. Mr. Robert Zombie is certainly no stranger to directing crap of his own, but he definitely has some choice words for some flicks that he thinks can (thunder) kiss off.
Ranking at #1 for Rob Zombie is Dracula 2000, particularly calling out Gerard Butler…even if he can’t remember his name. “This may be the worst movie ever committed to film. I found every single thing about it to be offensive, from top to bottom. You just stare at it in shock…Dracula is a tough character to play, you’ve...

Twenty years ago, Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage’s breakout hit The O.C., about a group of teens coming of age in Newport Beach, premiered on Fox. By the time the 27-episode first season aired its finale in the spring of 2004, the show was the highest-rated drama on TV among adults 18 to 34 and had catapulted its stars — whose characters were affectionately known as the “Core Four” — to massive, near-overnight popularity.
It wouldn’t be the first or last young adult series in the U.S. to generate a cultural frenzy. But the industry ecosystem that birthed and defined zeitgeisty YA shows like it — 22-episode drama series with largely white casts found through in-person auditions — is vanishing. As viewers have increasingly abandoned broadcast and cable TV, the linear networks these shows called home (Fox, The WB, Upn, The CW, MTV and Freeform) have also faced mergers, acquisitions, multiple rebrands or given...

Mystery Inc. rides again! Variety is reporting that the long-running "Scooby-Doo" franchise may be making a leap back to the live-action world, this time courtesy of Netflix. Sources tell the outlet that, unlike past versions of the Hanna-Barbera-created franchise, the new series won't be a comedic mystery but a one-hour drama series. Warner Bros. Television, which has been responsible for other dark teen-centric Netflix shows like "Chilling Adventures of Sabrina" and "Dead Boy Detectives," is set to produce.
Though the deal apparently isn't set in stone yet, the untitled "Scooby-Doo" live-action project is apparently in talks to receive a script-to-series commitment, with the team from Arrowverse maestro Greg Berlanti's Berlanti Productions (which also helped bring the two above titles to life) set to produce. Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg, the creative duo that co-executive produced shows like Hulu's "High Fidelity" and MGM+'s underrated "From," are set to...

Lucas is about to confront a mysterious figure from his past on When Calls the Heart. In the April 28 episode of the Hallmark Channel drama, a woman named Jeanette Aucoin arrives in Hope Valley. And it looks like the character, who is played by Cecilia Deacon, could lead to some trouble for the new governor.
Jeanette ‘causes a stir’ in Hope Valley in the next episode of ‘When Call the Heart’
“We have a newcomer in Hope Valley in season 11 from Lucas’s past. Her name is Jeanette,” Lucas actor Chris McNally says in a behind-the-scenes video for Hallmark (via YouTube).
While this is the first time When Calls the Heart viewers have seen Jeanette, she’s not exactly new to the show.
“She’s been threaded through the story, through various seasons, ever since Lucas’s inception,” McNally explains.
Jeanette’s character has been mentioned several times in past seasons.

Amazon is teaming with Reese Witherspoon and her Hello Sunshine banner to develop a Legally Blonde TV series. Gossip Girl and The O.C. grads Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage are attached to write the TV offshoot, whose premise is being kept under wraps. Schwartz and Savage and their Fake Empire banner, Witherspoon and Hello Sunshine’s Lauren Neustadter, Marc Platt and Amazon MGM Studios are all producing the potential offshoot.
It’s unclear if Witherspoon has any plans to reprise her role as Elle Woods in the potential TV series, which comes as Amazon has been scouring the MGM library to for titles to revive since acquiring the storied studio a few years ago. Now, the Coalition of Asian Pacifics in Entertainment is expanding its focus to the other end of the pipeline. The Cape Showrunners Incubator, powered by Starz’s #TakeTheLead diversity initiative for its inaugural year, will draw upon the nonprofit’s experience in talent development to give upper-level Api TV scribes the mentorship and other resources they need to break through that final ceiling.

New month, new horror recommendations from Deep Cuts Rising. This installment features selections reflecting the month of April 2024.
Regardless of how they came to be here, or what they’re about, these past movies can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.
This month’s offerings include telepathic plants, ecological horrors, and a lot of killer cats.
The Uncanny (1977)
Pictured: The Uncanny (1977)
Directed by Denis Héroux.
The Uncanny is a two-for kind of deal: it works for both National Pet Day (April 11) and Tell a Story Day (April 27). Here we have Peter Cushing‘s character talking at length about the evils of cats, with his three examples fleshing out this singular anthology. And while this film is often mistaken for an Amicus production, it was, in fact, made by The Rank Organisation. However, Amicus co-founder Milton Subotsky was also a co-producer.

Diarra From Detroit is, at various points, a hard-boiled mystery, a quarter-life crisis comedy, a complicated love triangle (that’s occasionally a quadrangle), and an ensemble hangout show about a group of longtime friends. Some of these elements in theory make sense together — though in theory they should not all fit within the same series. But the reason Diarra, which debuted last week on the BET+ streaming service, is among this year’s most pleasant TV surprises is how much it all makes sense when you watch it.

Walker is one of the few shows on The CW from an earlier regime, back when the network catered to younger audiences.
Of course, the series skews older than The CW’s typical series, which probably explains why it survived when the network’s younger-skewing fare like Charmed, Dynasty, Legacies, and Nancy Drew all got the pink slip.
Walker, a reboot of the successful Walker, Texas Ranger, has managed to break through as a reboot because it has brought plenty of contemporary storylines to a format that worked well not so long ago.
As we delve into Walker Season 4, the series is at a tipping point because it will be judged more harshly than some other offerings, such as Wild Cards, which has performed admirably as a co-production.
Plenty of details have emerged about Walker Season 4, but we don’t want you to do all the digging for intel.

“It’s been really interesting to talk about the film in this personal way, because it really was never meant to be so personal,” Elemental director Peter Sohn said at Deadline’s Contenders Film: The Nominees panel Saturday.
“The seeds sort of started,” the Disney/Pixar vet added of his own Korean family story that birthed the Oscar-nominated toon. “And it rippled through the crew, and a lot of our crew members started bringing their own personal lives to it as well.”

Movies and television have been competing for the same audience's time and money since TV was invented, but they've also formed a strange symbiosis. There have been a heck of a lot of movies based on TV shows, and a heck of a lot of TV shows based on movies.
Some of those shows based on movies have been major pop culture milestones, like "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "The Karate Kid," and "Friday Night Lights." And of course a whole lot of been almost completely forgotten, like the sitcoms based on "Dirty Dancing," "Working Girl," and "Animal House."
But one thing these TV shows usually have in common is that they're almost always based on a hit movie. It's not surprising when a blockbuster like "M*A*S*H" or "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids" gets turned into a television series. It's even common for smaller, but critically acclaimed films...

ABC has firmed up its post-strike needs.
The Disney-owned broadcast network has canceled The Rookie: Feds and opted to pass on The Good Doctor spinoff, The Good Lawyer.
Both shows had been on hold since May as ABC, like other networks, took a wait-and-see approach to its needs once both the actors and writers strikes concluded.
With actors poised to join writers back at work in the coming days, ABC now has a firm picture of its schedule for what remains of the 2023-24 broadcast season. The Writers Guild and SAG-AFTRA strikes wiped out the September start and with production expected to resume in the coming weeks, ABC ultimately had no need for a second season of Feds, starring Niecy Nash-Betts. The series, like the already renewed flagship, is a co-production between Disney’s ABC Signature and outside studio Entertainment One.

In just five years, A Haunting in Venice’s Hildur Gudnadóttir has become one of the industry’s most in-demand composers.
In 2018, the Icelandic musician and classically trained cellist scored her first American film, Stefano Sollima’s Sicario: Day of the Soldado, and now, she’s a Tony award away from Egot (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony) status thanks to Joker (2019) and Chernobyl (2019). Gudnadóttir’s evocative strings and wind instruments return to theaters this Friday in Kenneth Branagh’s third Hercule Poirot film, A Haunting in Venice.
Like Branagh, Gudnadóttir grew up in a household that adored Agatha Christie’s crime fiction, and so she jumped at the chance to compose music for the Oscar-winning filmmaker’s latest murder mystery. Based on Christie’s Hallowe’en Party and adapted by Michael Green, Venice picks up in 1947, post-World War II, as a retired Poirot attends a séance that quickly goes awry.

It’s understood that Disney’s plan is to pay assistants who work for banners that have been suspended through the end of the year. Development executives tied to suspended deals will be paid through early October. The Disney suspensions were first reported by Deadline.
