ABC's current incarnation of The Wonder Years debuted in Fall 2021, and the first season performed pretty well. Likely because the network had more shows than timeslots, season two was held back until this summer. As a result, there's been a year gap between seasons. Has Wonder Years' audience forgotten about it or, are the viewers out enjoying the summer weather instead of watching television? Will the comedy be cancelled or renewed for season three? Stay tuned. *Status Update Below.

It’s the end of The Wonder Years. ABC has canceled the comedy series — a reboot of the 1988 show of the same name — after a two-season run, Deadline reports. The latest version of The Wonder Years is a coming-of-age story following a Black middle-class family living in 1960s-era Montgomery, Alabama, through the point of view of 12-year-old Dean (Elisha “Ej” Williams). “With the wisdom of his adult years, Dean’s hopeful and humorous recollections show how his family found their ‘wonder years’ in a turbulent time,” ABC added in a logline for the series, which was narrated by Don Cheadle as an older version of the protagonist. Created by Saladin K. Patterson, The Wonder Years also starred Dulé Hill and Saycon Sengbloh as Bill and Lillian Williams, Dean’s parents, and Laura Kariuki as Kim, his sister. Amari O’Neil, Julian Lerner, and Milan Ray played friends of Dean’s — portraying Cory,...

We have some bad TV news to share this Saturday morning.
The Wonder Years has been canceled at ABC, Deadline reports.
The news comes a month after the series wrapped up its second season on the network.
Canceling a series without a pre-planned conclusion is difficult for the cast, crew, and fans, but it's been clear ABC has been considering a future without the series for some time.
Despite soft ratings, The Wonder Years scored a renewal for Season 2 last year and was set to premiere at midseason.
However, the network pushed it to the fall, keeping the show off the air for over a year.
Summer scripted shows were once widespread on the broadcast networks, but nowadays, shows are sent there to burn off produced episodes.
The Wonder Years Season 2 averaged 1.8 million viewers and a 0.21 rating across ten episodes, down 50% in the demo vs. the freshman season.

“The Wonder Years” reboot will not return for a third season at ABC, TheWrap has learned.
The network has chosen to cancel the sitcom starring Elisha “Ej” Williams, Dulé Hill and Saycon Sengbloh, which ran for two seasons. The cancellation comes just over a month after the coming-of-age drama aired the finale for its sophomore season, which saw the Williams family head to Disneyland.

Exclusive: ABC has opted not to proceed with a third season of The Wonder Years. The news comes a month after the reboot of the classic coming-of-age comedy wrapped its Season 2 run on the network.
Originally slated for a midseason return, The Wonder Years‘ second season was pushed to summer, hinting at the show’s potential fate as summer has traditionally been used as a destination for broadcast scripted series that have either been canceled or are likely to be.
The Wonder Years ranks as the lowest-rated and least watched ABC series this summer, behind the network’s unscripted slate. It also would rank last among ABC’s series that aired during the 2022-23 season.
There are no renewal decisions on ABC bubble series The Rookie: Feds and Home Economics and a pickup one on The Good Lawyer pilot. As Deadline reported last month, their fates remain in limbo amid...

This is what an ally looks like! “The Wonder Years” star Dulé Hill celebrated the introduction of a queer character into the Williams family’s 1960s-era world and hopes the storyline will spark conversations and empathy amid renewed anti-drag and anti-trans rhetoric in America today.

Adrienne Bailon and Israel Houghton's love story is one for the books. Similar to fellow celeb sweethearts Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker, Bailon, 38, and Houghton, 51, were friends for years before their relationship turned romantic. "When he got officially divorced and started dating again, I immediately started to set him up with my friends," Bailon told People in 2016. "He didn't think they'd want to go out with him but I told him, 'Don't be silly. You have a great smile, you're successful, you're kind, super witty, funny and smart. Of course, they'll go out with you.'"
Despite Bailon's attempts at finding a match for Houghton, none of the dates were a success. "A while later, we were sitting in the corner together at a party and a friend of ours came up and said, 'You guys have old love,'" Bailon recalled. "My friend told me, 'You have to kiss him.

It’s been almost 35 years since audiences first sat down with the Arnolds, an all-American family living through the turbulent 1960s and ’70s. For viewers of the time, the 1960s still had a magic and allure that appealed to adults. It’s also a great example of why a reboot was worthwhile. For white audiences, that era means one thing, but for Black families the 1960s meant something else entirely. And it’s something creator Saladin K. Patterson isn’t shying away from in the new iteration of ABC’s “The Wonder Years.”
Set in Montgomery, Alabama during the late ’60s, this version of “The Wonder Years” follows Dean Williams (Elisha Williams), a fairly typical middle school student, albeit one whose life is narrated by Don Cheadle as a grown-up version of our young protagonist. Dean’s upbringing is a simple one but considering the time and place, he’s...

The much-anticipated reimagined reboot of “The Wonder Years” debuted on ABC last Wednesday night during Premiere Week. The coming-of-age dramedy, starring Elisha “Ej” Williams and narrated by Don Cheadle, drew in 3.07 million viewers and a rating of 0.6 in the key, ages 18-49 demographic per Nielsen’s Live+Same Day overnight ratings. Though “The Wonder Years” tied as the highest-rated new series debut in the key demo with “FBI: International” and Fox’s new singing competition “Alter Ego,” it did not outscore NBC’s “Chicago” trio season premieres which often dominates its three-hour block. They attracted 6.54, 7.03 and 6.35 million viewers, respectively.
“We want to really take the opportunity to show a part of Black, middle-class life that had not been seen before. Usually, when you talk about the late ’60s, it’s talking about the struggle in the civil rights movement and things like that, that are very valid and a part of our story as well,...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for The Wonder Years, Season 1, Episode 1, “Pilot.”] Although it takes place in the same era (the late 1960s), ABC’s reboot of The Wonder Years is telling a different story from the original as the focus shifts from Kevin Arnold (Fred Savage) to Dean Williams (Elisha “Ej” Williams). While Dean is a bit like Kevin because of his awkward youth, there’s a distinct difference as the series looks at life within Dean’s relatively affluent Black community. The premiere focuses on Dean’s desire to find the place he fits best, a quest that’s harder to achieve than he’d originally thought. (Credit: ABC/Erika Doss) Viewers meet his best friends Cory Long (Amari O’Neil) and Brad Hitman (Julian Lerner), as well as the girl he’s got goo-goo eyes for, Keisa Clemmons (Milan Ray). Now attending class at a desegregated school, Dean has to contend with the attitudes...

The Wonder Years, which originally premiered on January 31, 1988 on ABC, followed a young Kevin Arnold (played by Fred Savage) growing up in a white middle-class family during the late ’60s and early ’70s. With Daniel Stern narrating as a thirtysomething Kevin reflecting on his younger years, the story focused on his childhood in a nondescript suburban neighborhood against the backdrop of the Vietnam War.

In the conversation about seminal television through the years, a show like the original version of “The Wonder Years” always tends to find a way in the conversation. And for good reason. For six seasons, the coming-of-age ABC dramedy followed Fred Savage as Kevin Arnold, a typical suburban American child from a typical suburban American household, as he grew up in his typical suburban town — from 1968 to 1973. The series itself debuted in 1988 and ended in 1993, allowing Boomers to look back with fondness over a nostalgic reminder of their own wonder years, of what it felt like to grow up at that time, awkwardness and all. “The Wonder Years” also connected to the millennial, Nick at Nite crowd who may have been too young to fully get the series when it originally aired but could go back and connect through the power of syndication. Which is why a reboot or reimagining...

The first iteration of ABC’s “The Wonder Years,” which kicked off in 1988, featured a young Fred Savage as a kid growing up about twenty years in the past.
If the revival of the format, now executive-produced by Savage along with Lee Daniels, Saladin Patterson, and Marc Velez, kept that gap, we’d be following a story that took place at the turn of the century, roughly the same territory occupied by Hulu’s “Pen15.” Instead, though, the show keeps its gaze fixed on 1968, meaning that the adult protagonist telling us the story of his childhood is doing so at a distance of more than fifty years.
The remove of distance dulls some sentimentality: This “Wonder Years” seems less interested in nostalgia than in exploring what growing up against history does to one kid. Credit the pilot of “The Wonder Years” 2.0 with this: With brainpower that’s rare for a contemporary network sitcom,...
