We know that the MonsterVerse franchise is extremely popular. What started off as a Godzilla and King Kong reboot became a major cinematic franchise that brought the studio a lot of money. In the meantime, a television series – Monarch: Legacy of Monsters – was also launched and became a global hit, with fans eagerly awaiting a new season. The series was co-created by Matt Fraction and Chris Black, and the latter is going to be at the center of this report.
The topic we wanted to share with you is related to an interview between Christopher Rosen and Chris Black, one of the co-creators of the series. The two of them had a talk as part of the GoldDerby podcast and it was so interesting that we absolutely had to report on it.
As you can assume, Rosen and Black talked about a lot of things, but there is a very interesting one that was discussed,...

“Shōgun” is causing a lotta drama — in our Emmy predictions. Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to discuss our updated “Shōgun”-heavy drama picks and “Shōgun”-less limited picks. Plus: Our guest category predictions!
With second and third seasons of “Shōgun” in development, the FX series must compete in drama now instead of limited at the Emmys. The acclaimed epic definitely fortifies the previously weak drama field and became an automatic frontrunner (it’s still in second in the odds behind “The Crown”). How many statuettes can and will it win in drama? Can supporting favorites Elizabeth Debicki (“The Crown”) and Billy Crudup (“The Morning Show”) hold off “Shōgun” fan faves Moeka Hoshi and Tadanobu Asano?
See Experts slugfest: What a Shōgun category change would mean for drama and limited

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we wonder if some old faves can over-perform in comedy.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’re back to laugh again about this year’s Emmys comedy race. This has remained a pretty stable race, so much so that not even FX seems concerned about “The Bear” and its status as the obvious frontrunner. The third season of the show comes back on June 27, after Emmy nominations voting has closed and well before final voting begins. It seems like Season 2 of “The Bear” is so far out in front that it might not even need Season 3 to goose its win potential. That’s maybe bad news for our beloved “Hacks,” which always faced an uphill battle in Best Comedy Series but...

What would benefit from a “Shōgun”-less limited field? And what would be hurt by a “Shōgun”-filled drama field? Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to discuss the FX series’ possible category shift, “Mr. & Mrs. Smith’s” return without the Mr. and Mrs. Smith we know (probably) and more.
Speculation has crescendoed in the past week about “Shōgun” moving from limited to drama, capped off by the report that Hiroyuki Sanada has inked a new deal to reprise his role as Toranaga in a possible second season. FX has not confirmed or denied, but the pieces are coming together for a renewal. If it does go drama, the show would easily become the Best Drama Series favorite, which means we could have a second year in a row of three shows dominating the three genres with “Shōgun” in drama, “The Bear” in comedy and “Baby Reindeer” in limited.

These savvy pundits from major media outlets have chimed in with their predictions, and the majority believe the trophy will go to Meryl Streep (“Only Murders in the Building”). Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’re back to type about the limited series race, which remains fairly top-heavy despite what the odds might suggest. To wit: Netflix smash “Baby Reindeer” is only in fifth place in our odds, even though it’s all-but-assured of being extremely win-competitive in this race and could usurp “Shōgun” in the end as the year’s one true sensation of the year (if the latter doesn’t move to drama as widely speculated this week). You were the earliest adopter of the Netflix juggernaut, which made landfall in Los Angeles this week for a splashy FYC event. The show feels assured of several top nominations,...

Colin Farrell is a what on “Sugar”?! Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to discuss the Apple TV+ show’s big twist, how that might impact its Emmy chances and more.
Stop here if you care about “Sugar” spoilers. Your last warning. Ok. The sixth episode of the noir detective drama revealed that John Sugar (Farrell) is an alien who’s been dispatched to Earth with his alien pals to observe and report on humans. It’s a big swing that’s been divisive among critics and completely changes the show. But does it change its Emmy hopes? The series has been an underdog contender — it’s in 11th place in the odds in drama series — while Farrell has been sitting in third place in the drama actor rankings. Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’re back to our favorite 2024 Emmys genre: drama! I kid, of course, but there is something still dramatic about this year’s drama categories – even as we (I) wait with bated breath to see which limited series blinks and joins the party in these final days, pre-printed FYC ads be damned. For now, we’re all operating on the idea that “The Crown” is the favorite here, but that feels like it’s operating on more vibes than reality. The final season of the Emmy Award-winning series was certainly better received than its preceding season… but it was a far cry from the sweeping fourth season.

“Hacks” is back — and better than ever! Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to discuss the Max comedy’s triumphant return and Emmy hopes.
After missing eligibility last year, “Hacks” dropped the first two episodes of its nine-episode third season on Thursday. Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’ve circled back around to the 2024 Emmys comedy category — a genre we’ve paid little mind to so far because it seems obvious “The Bear” will sweep through the ceremony again. I love being a contrarian whenever possible — or, at least, speaking truth to power and groupthink — but even I’m not here to type about potential upsets, particularly with “The Bear” Season 3 set to debut in June, again, right when academy members are sitting down to vote. But in the interest of keeping things interesting — and because it’s probably now the best continuing show with “Succession” off the air (remember when we had it so good?...

Based on Rebecca Godfrey‘s book of the same name, “Under the Bridge,” which premiered with two episodes on Wednesday, tells the true story of Reena Virk (Vritika Gupta), a 14-year-old who was assaulted by a group of teens, mostly girls, and then murdered in a small town in British Columbia, Canada, in 1997. Riley Keough plays Godfrey, who died of lung cancer in 2022, a week after the show was announced, and Lily Gladstone plays a detective. Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we revisit the still unpredictable drama field.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! It’s Friday and we’ve circled back to the most chaotic genre of this Emmys cycle: drama. That’s fitting, I guess, because, you know, drama! But this remains a field that’s wide open spaces, with a placeholder frontrunner in “The Crown” and then a bunch of new shows vying for attention and older series looking to get on the academy’s series radar for the first time. I don’t know what to make of this, except to wait patiently for one or more of those favored limited series to make the jump here. But until that happens, we must prognosticate with the hand we were dealt.

Will “Fallout” come out on top? Will Emmy voters support “The Sympathizer”? Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to discuss this week’s two new titles looking to crash into the drama and limited categories.
Based on the video game of the same name, “Fallout” is set in a post-apocalyptic world and stars Ella Purnell, Walton Goggins and Aaron Moten. Will it be as successful at the Emmys as last year’s post-apocalyptic series based on a video game, “The Last of Us”? Unlike the HBO drama, which follows the video game storyline, “Fallout” features an original story, putting gamers and non-gamers on equal footing. With a wide-open drama field, the Amazon Prime Video series can definitely land a spot in the series lineup, provided it’s a hit with viewers as expected, but could it go all the way and win?

Unlike the HBO drama, which follows the video game storyline, “Fallout” features an original story, putting gamers and non-gamers on equal footing. With a wide-open drama field, the Amazon Prime Video series can definitely land a spot in the series lineup, provided it’s a hit with viewers as expected, but could it go all the way and win?

Having trouble predicting what will win Best Limited Series at the 2024 Emmy Awards? Let’s consult Gold Derby’s Emmy Experts! These savvy pundits from major media outlets have chimed in with their first set of predictions, and they are divided between five different programs: FX’s “Shogun,” FX’s “Fargo,” HBO’s “True Detective: Night Country,” HBO’s “The Regime” and Apple TV+’s “Lessons in Chemistry.”
As of this writing, a leading four out of our 11 Emmy Experts predict a victory for “Shogun”: Ben Travers (Indiewire), Christopher Rosen (Gold Derby), Clayton Davis (Variety) and Joyce Eng (Gold Derby). The big-budget Japanese historical drama is based on James Clavell‘s 1975 novel, which was previously adapted into NBC’s three-time Emmy-winning 1980 miniseries. Cast members include Hiroyuki Sanada, Cosmo Jarvis, Anna Sawai and Fumi Nikaido.
Two of our Emmyologists — Ray Richmond (Gold Derby) and Thelma Adams (Gold Derby) — instead believe “Fargo” will prevail.

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we discuss the top-heavy Best Comedy Actress category.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’re back to type about comedy — and not the comedy of seeing Tom Ripley try to dodge a runaway motorboat. I’m typing about real comedy… like “The Bear.” Well, Ok, maybe not just “The Bear” since that’s all but assured of winning multiple Emmy Awards in September in a rerun of the 2023 (’24) Emmys we just saw in January. But let’s start there because while we agree with the consensus that the series, Jeremy Allen White and Ebon Moss-Bachrach should all repeat as Emmy winners this year, we’re both against the current tide in the Best Comedy Actress race. Most experts and users predict...

St. Patrick’s Day was last month, but this week is all about the Irish. Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to discuss two highly anticipated shows premiering this week headlined by two of Ireland’s finest actors: “Ripley,” starring Andrew Scott, and “Sugar,” starring Colin Farrell.
“Ripley,” which dropped all eight episodes on Thursday on Netflix, is Steven Zaillian‘s adaptation of Patricia Highsmith‘s “The Talented Mr. Ripley” and stars Scott as the titular con artist who murders and impersonates rich kid Dickie Greenleaf (Johnny Flynn). Shot in black and white by Oscar winner Robert Elswit, the limited series is a more faithful adaptation of the novel than Anthony Minghella‘s 1999 film and is basically an eight-episode showcase for Scott as Tom Ripley tries to get away with murder. After his “Fleabag” snub and a guest nomination for “Black Mirror,” is “Ripley...

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we break down the loaded limited series field.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’ve reached what is maybe my favorite Emmys category of the year. Peak TV is dead and Mass TV is arguably on the ropes, but you wouldn’t know it from the absolutely stacked limited series and TV movie roster. What a time to be alive? There are multiple series here that I’m excited about, too many, in fact, to fit into the five slots for Best Limited Series. But right now I feel pretty good about the shows I do have represented. First in my heart and on my predictions list is “Shōgun,” our favorite “Succession” prequel and just a complete smash. Great crafts, beautiful crafts,...

“The Bear” cooked up a record-breaking 10 Emmy wins for its first season and it feels all but certain that it will nab a bookend Best Comedy Series statuette in September — not to mention go 7/7. “Hacks,” returning for its third season on May 2 after missing last year’s eligibility, and “Abbott Elementary” are second and third in the odds behind “The Bear.” Each also stars the most recent Best Comedy Actress winners, Jean Smart and reigning champ Quinta Brunson, respectively. While “Hacks” Season 3 is yet to be seen, “Abbott” has returned with a bang with its shortened third season, due to the writers’ and actors’ strikes. Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! It’s Friday and we’ve saved the drama long enough. To misappropriate a classic line from one of my favorite comedies for purposes of this column: Are we having fun yet? Once home to “Succession,” “Better Call Saul” and “The Last of Us” among other bangers, this year’s drama category feels somewhat lighter by comparison. There is no real frontrunner, at least in the way we’ve been used to here, so that leaves “The Crown” — three years removed from its Emmy sweep but with a demonstrably less-loved season — and “The Morning Show” at the top of the predictions charts. Will “The Bear” rule the Emmys even harder the second time around? What will succeed “Succession”? Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here with their first Emmy predictions of the season.
It feels like the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards were just yesterday — and that’s because they basically were. The delayed ceremony took place in January and “The Bear” dominated with six awards, including Best Comedy Series, for a total of 10 wins for its debut season. And for Season 2, it will have a shot at pulling a “Schitt’s Creek” by claiming all seven comedy categories at the main ceremony as reigning supporting actress champ Ayo Edebiri has moved to lead. But can she hold off the last two Best Comedy Actress champs, Quinta Brunson (“Abbott Elementary”) and Jean Smart (“Hacks”)? Smart is undefeated for the Max series, which returns with its third season on May...

Is it too soon to think about the 97th Academy Awards? Probably, but we’re going to do it anyway. Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to make their incredibly early predictions for the 2025 Oscar ceremony that will for sure miss the mark.
Unlike last year with lots of highly anticipated titles from legacy and A-list names, including “Oppenheimer,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Barbie” and “Maestro,” 2024 is tad more sparse in that regard. The only incumbent Best Director nominee who is back this season is Yorgos Lanthimos, whose next Searchlight project, “Kinds of Kindness,” is an anthology. Will the academy bite? Speaking of Best Director, Denis Villeneuve is seeking a bid for “Dune: Part Two,” which was bumped from last year to this year due to the dual strikes, after being snubbed for 2021’s “Dune.” With a less stacked field this cycle, can...

“Oppenheimer” expectedly topped Sunday’s Oscars, but the biggest winner may have been BAFTA. Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to break down the winners, losers, Ryan Gosling and more.
After going 0/8 above the line last year and making people doubt its reliability as a precursor, BAFTA not only went 8/8 this year but correctly forecasted all other categories too except visual effects — only because the BAFTAs and Oscars did not nominate each other’s winners. The tightest above-the-line category was Best Actress, which went to Emma Stone (“Poor Things”), who took home her second Oscar in the category. How did she edge out Screen Actors Guild Award champ Lily Gladstone (“Killers of the Flower Moon”)?

Just as Gold Derby predicted, Robert Downey Jr. (“Oppenheimer”) has prevailed at the 2024 Oscars in the category of Best Supporting Actor. Earlier this awards season, the 58-year-old performer, who is perhaps best known for playing Marvel’s “Iron Man,” claimed victory at the Golden Globes, Critics Choice, BAFTA and SAG Awards for his role as Rear Admiral Lewis Strauss in Christopher Nolan‘s biopic about the life of theoretical physicist J.
