HBO broadcast its first women’s boxing bout, between Kali Reis and Cecilia Brækhus, in 2018. Just six years later, Reis is one of the stars on HBO’s “True Detective: Night Country,” where she plays Detective Evangeline Navarro alongside Jodie Foster. That could very well be the first time any HBO lead was first seen on the pay cabler in a boxing match.
“What’s really great about this whole journey is that things that are so far fetched are like not impossible in some part of my brain that understands that it’s a possibility,” Reis tells Variety‘s Awards Circuit Podcast. “And I think that’s one of the many things that keeps me grinding so hard.”
In the series, Reis plays Evangeline Navarro, a half-Dominican state trooper in Ennis, a fictional town in rural northern Alaska. Reis spoke to the Awards Circuit Podcast about her interpretation of...

Editor’s note: Deadline’s It Starts on the Page features standout limited or anthology series scripts in 2024 Emmy contention.
HBO’s True Detective came back after a five-year break with the franchise’s first female protagonists, played by Jodie Foster and Kali Reis, and its first female creator, Season 4’s writer, director, executive producer and showrunner Issa López.
When it came time to wrap True Detective: Night Country‘s mystery about the murder of the eight men from the Tsalal Arctic Research Station, López made a provocative decision about the fate of Evangeline Navarro (Reis) who went on walkabout on the ice that may – or may not – have resulted in her death.
“I very carefully crafted this as an ink block test for you to discover yourself as an audience member,” she told Deadline in February.

“Monk” is the epitome of the classic blue-sky show. Its mysteries are gripping, but the show’s characters are inviting — always giving viewers a reason to laugh. That’s still the case with Peacock’s reunion movie “Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie.” And yet, there’s something surprisingly dark about the state of obsessive-compulsive detective Adrian Monk when we catch up with him, post-pandemic.
“At this point we find Monk is really in a in a dark, dark place,” star Tony Shalhoub tells Variety‘s Awards Circuit Podcast. “He’s in a deep hole. His team is not really close by and he’s kind of lost his purpose. And (exec producer) Andy (Breckman) presented this idea that Monk was entertaining thoughts of suicide. It hit us hard in the beginning. We thought, ‘geez, we’ve gone dark in the show before, but not this dark!'”

Within the past week, Jennifer Jason Leigh (“Fargo”) lost and then regained her first place position on our Best TV Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actress Emmy odds chart. She is being given a run for her money by small screen newcomer Kali Reis (“True Detective: Night Country”), who maintained general frontrunner status from May 9-12 and is still our experts’ pick to win, as has been the case since May 3.
A week ago, Reis was also our editors’ predicted winner, but they have since gravitated back toward Leigh. Based on the forecasts of 2,400+ Gold Derby users, both women currently have 6/1 odds in their race, with their closest competitor being Aja Naomi King (“Lessons in Chemistry”) at 15/2.
The temporary toppling of Leigh occurred three weeks after “Shōgun” overtook “Fargo” in the Best Limited Series race. Since then, the consensus among our readers has been that the latter show’s best shot...

The only person who knows for certain what happens to Detective Navarro at the end of HBO’s True Detective: Night Country is Kali Reis herself.
“I have my own interpretation for Navarro, but I have not shared that with a soul,” Reis shared during the Deadline TV Contenders panel for the series.
Reis was joined by her co-star Jodie Foster, as well as showrunner Issa López, to discuss Night Country. While the ending may seem quite ambiguous, López assured that there is “an answer,” if audiences look close enough.
“I think that if you look very carefully, very carefully at the show and follow the lines very carefully, there’s an answer to what we saw at the end,” she told the audience. “But again, there’s a space for where your heart wants to live…and what you need to get out of it.”

“True Detective” season four, officially titled “True Detective: Night Country,” has returned the HBO crime series to its former glories after seasons two and three disappointed. This entry follows Jodie Foster as a police chief investigating the vanishing of eight men in the spooky, fictional town of Ennis, Alaska.
One of many things, along with the eerie town and Lovecraftian seasoning, that makes this series so excellent is its cast. Two-time Oscar-winner Foster is joined by a trio of other veterans — Christopher Eccleston, Fiona Shaw, and John Hawkes — plus a pair of newcomers: former boxer Kali Reis and rising star Finn Bennett. Bennett plays police Officer Peter Prior, the son of Hawkes’ Captain Prior, and he turns in a nuanced, memorable performance. Critics have agreed, too, he makes the strongest impression amongst the series’ supporting cast.

“True Detective” is back with a bang thanks to an electric fourth entry in the franchise from Issa López, who injects the crime series with darkness, humanity, and intrigue. This fourth edition of the HBO hit follows Jodie Foster as a police chief in the fictional town of Ennis, Alaska. She leads an investigation into the disappearance of eight men from a research station. Seasons two and three of “True Detective” weren’t received as rapturously as the first season, starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, but numerous critics have proclaimed that this fourth entry is as good if not better than season one.
Katie Rife (IGN) opined: “‘True Detective: Night Country’ is the best season of the series since the original. The horror sequences are especially good, and creator Issa López thoughtfully engages with the Alaska location without sacrificing the intrigue of a good detective story.”

“True Detective: Night Country” had all the ingredients necessary to rope in viewers. It was the first new season of HBO’s Emmy-winning crime anthology in five years. It was also the first to feature women as its protagonists. And it marked two-time Oscar winner Jodie Foster’s first foray into television in nearly half a century. But what made this latest season truly notable was the breakout and Emmy-worthy performance delivered by Kali Reis — in only her third acting role — as Evangeline Navarro, a determined but haunted Alaskan trooper investigating a mysterious homicide and struggling with her past and her culture.

Now that “True Detective” is renewed for a fifth season and “Night Country” creator Issa López is returning to oversee it, many fans are wondering if the HBO series will continue to go the anthology route or possibly feature the return of “Night Country” characters played by Jodi Foster and Kali Reis. Foster weighed in on a possible return while speaking to Variety On the Carpet presented by Directv at the 2024 Oscars. Foster is a supporting actress nominee for “Nyad.”
Unfortunately for fans who loved watching Foster’s Chief Liz Danvers, it sounds like Lopez will be sticking with the anthology route for “True Detective” Season 5. Foster told Variety’s Marc Malkin that her time on the show was “one and done” and “it’s an anthology.” Asked if she’s coming back, Foster said point blank: “No.”

True Detective staging a comeback both creatively and in the ratings wasn’t on our bingo card for 2024.
HBO on Thursday confirmed that it has picked up True Detective Season 5, mere days after the conclusion of True Detective: Night Country.
The series started in 2014 with Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson in the lead roles, scoring rave reviews and high viewership.
One year later, the franchise imploded with a season featuring Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, Taylor Kitsch, Kelly Reilly, and Vince Vaughn.
At that point, it seemed the series was dead… only to get another reprieve in 2018 with Mahershala Ali as the lead.
The reviews were decent, but it didn’t succeed as much as its predecessors. The franchise went dormant again… until Jodie Foster agreed to appear on True Detective: Night Country.

The smash hit success of “True Detective: Night Country,” the fourth season of the HBO anthology series, is paving the way for “True Detective” Season 5, we’ve learned today.
Variety reports that “Night Country” creator Issa López (Tigers Are Not Afraid) will stay on board to lead the fifth season under her new overall deal with HBO.

“True Detective” has been renewed for Season 5 at HBO. Issa López, the creator of “True Detective: Night Country,” will helm the fifth season under her new overall deal with HBO.
The renewal comes as little surprise, given the success of “Night Country,” which saw Jodie Foster and Kali Reis star in the fourth installment of the HBO anthology series. Per HBO, the season is the most-watched installment of the show to date, with 12.7 million cross platform viewers. The season finale on Feb. 18 was the most-watched episode of the season, drawing 3.2 million viewers across HBO and Max. That represents a 57% increase over the show’s premiere viewership in January.

In a new Instagram post, Pizzolatto addressed the fans hating on “True Detective: Night Country” by creating a post for them to channel their anger in the comments section. Pizzolatto wants fans to stop spamming his other, non-“True Detective” related posts with outrage, so he created one post that could...

Kali Reis is responding to True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto after repeated passive-aggressive comments against the fourth season of the HBO anthology series.
Pizzolatto created the franchise for the premium cable network, with the first season starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. The fourth season, titled True Detective: Night Country, stars Reis and Jodie Foster and is the first season without Pizzolatto’s involvement, although he is still credited as an executive producer of the drama.
Night Country recently wrapped its season and now ranks as the most-watched season of the franchise that started in 2014. Although the show created by Issa López has enjoyed good ratings and positive reviews, franchise originator Pizzolatto has thrown shade throughout the series’ run.

Original “True Detective” creator Nic Pizzolatto is once again making headlines for seemingly bashing the show’s fourth season, “True Detective: Night Country,” which was the first not to be created by Pizzolatto himself. “Night Country” hailed from Issa López, who directed and co-wrote all six episodes. Pizzolatto was still an executive producer on the show, but he distanced himself from “Night Country” during its run and generated significant backlash after reposting criticisms of the finale to his Instagram story.
Pizzolatto did not provide any personal commentary on the “True Detective: Night Country” finale. Instead, he chose to share negative reactions from other people who slammed the new season as “disrespectful and insulting” and a “hot mess.” He reposted several fans who were outraged with the finale and its “lazy, nonsensical” resolutions and claimed that Lopez had “butchered” his original writing given the connections between “Night Country” and the first season of “True Detective.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for True Detective: Night Country Season 4, Episode 6, “Part 6.”] True Detective: Night Country delivered its final chapter and with it the closure of another case, but is there room for more in the future? After introducing Season 1 connections to Night Country‘s Alaskan-set story, True Detective teased possibilities for a crossover, but would the stars return for a second case? Kali Reis who plays Detective Evangeline Navarro says, “Navarro has gone through the ringer, man, leave that woman alone,” with a laugh. “No, I think it was meant to be what it is,” Reis clarifies of the story showrunner Issa Lopez set out to tell. “I mean, you could go off and explore each character. You can explore who they were before all this s**t hit the fan, so to speak. You can explore way back. You can explore [the far] future. True Detective: Night Country winked and nodded to the HBO crime anthology’s original iteration all season long. But perhaps never more overtly than in the finale, which conjured up the franchise’s most indelible phrase: “Time is a flat circle.”
In the sprawling episode, viewers finally learn the answers to some of the biggest mysteries littered throughout Night Country, including this big one: What question should we have been asking all along? Turns out, it’s not “Who or what killed these men?” But instead: “Who knows who killed Annie K?”
By the end of the finale, it’s revealed the two cases are completely linked: The scientists killed Annie in an act straight out of Lord of the Flies, and Annie’s community — many of them women who worked at the research station — rose up and killed the scientists in kind. The women explain their actions in a...

“True Detective: Night Country” reached 2.7 million viewers with its third episode on Sunday night, which notably aired in competition with the NFC championship game. This marks a 5% increase compared to the previous episode.
The season has now seen two consecutive weeks of growth, as Episode 2’s 2.6 million viewers on Jan. 22 marked a 28% improvement from the premiere’s 2 million viewers. (These numbers come from a combination of Nielsen’s measurement of linear viewers on HBO’s cable channel as well as streams on Max through each episode’s first night of availability). Additionally, these episodes continue to grow on Max: Episode 1 jumped from 2 million to 7.5 million viewers after one first week and now sits at 10.7 million viewers, while one week of streaming availability for Episode 2 boosted it from 2.6 million to 8 million viewers.
Thus far, “True Detective: Night Country” is outpacing “Succession” Season 4 and “The White Lotus” Season 2, HBO’s most recent comparable titles.

Viewership of “True Detective: Night Country” saw a 28% increase with its newest installment on Sunday night. After the season premiered with 2 million viewers last week, Episode 2 reached 2.6 million viewers.
These numbers, which combine Nielsen’s measurement of linear viewers on HBO with first-party data from HBO regarding streams on Max through each episode’s first night, represent success for “Night Country,” which is the fourth installment of “True Detective.” For comparison, the majorly acclaimed fourth season of “Succession” premiered in with 2.3 million viewers — while enjoying the benefit of concluding its third season more recently while “True Detective” has been off the air for five years —then dipped down to 2 million with its second episode. Season 2 of “The White Lotus,” which more closely matches “True Detective’s” anthology style, premiered with 1.5 million viewers, and while data is unavailable regarding Episode 2, Episode 6 set a then-series high of 2.3 million viewers, which “Night Country” has already surpassed.

Why are they piled on each other? Why are their eardrums bleeding? Why are they naked, and why are all their clothes so neatly piled nearby? And how on Earth is one of them alive?
These are all valid questions when gazing upon the frozen murder tableau at the heart of True Detective: Night Country. First discovered at the end of the season premiere, the pile of corpses (with one living body in the lot) that opens the show’s second hour stands out among the gnarliest images in the True Detective franchise’s history — and this is the same show that brought forth the Yellow King of Carcosa.

What do we know about Raymond Clark? We know he’s a scientist at the Tsalal Research Base in Ennis, Alaska. We know, thanks to his online bio shown last week, that he studies paleomicrobiology with a focus on “understanding the molecular basis of colonization and infection by Staphylococcus aureus.” We know he was the only person with his own room at the research facility, and we know that he was wearing the late Annie K’s parka in a photograph taken at that base. “I started writing it during the lockdown, and I was listening day and night to Billie Eilish,” Lopez told Indiewire on Monday following the show’s Sunday premiere. “Billie’s irony and melancholy and poetry informed a lot of what was happening in the series. And then that particular song,...

[This story contains spoilers from the season four premiere of True Detective: Night Country.]
Within its first major sequence, True Detective: Night Country loudly and proudly bellows its mission statement: “Shake it up, baby!”
The fourth season of the HBO crime anthology series comes from a brand-new team helmed by director Issa Lopez, with stars Jodie Foster and Kali Reis taking on the titular detective duties. A new lineup of talent on and behind the screen absolutely shakes up the True Detective formula, offering something that feels entirely new, while also providing a bone-chilling narrative that feels most aligned with the Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson-starring first season.
Emphasis on “chilling,” too, considering the premise of Night Country is that it’s set in an Alaskan town in the throes of an all-nighter. The sun is setting for the winter months, and in the midst of the perma-dark permafrost, an evil lurks.

True Detective finally returns with a new chapter as Night Country kicks off on HBO beginning Sunday, January 14. Taking on the lead roles for this Alaska-set season are veteran actor Jodie Foster and up-and-coming actor Kali Reis. While Foster is no stranger to the spotlight, Reis has only been acting onscreen since 2021. Playing detective Evangeline Navarro, she is sure to capture viewers’ attention with her gripping performance. A member of the Seaconke Wampanaak tribe, Reis was born and grew up in Rhode Island as a member of the Indigenous community. Growing up, Reis began training and had a successful amateur career by the mid-2000s with accolades including the 2007 Rocky Marciano Championship, the 2007 NYC Golden Gloves, and the 2006 New England 154 Championship.

The fourth installment of HBO’s True Detective series is poised to be the spookiest yet. Set in the remote town of Ennis, Alaska, Night Country follows former partners Liz Danvers and Evangeline Navarro as they investigate the disappearance of eight researchers from a remote facility. The pair have a tense past, not only with each other, but with others in their small town.
True Detective: Night Country marks Jodie Foster’s first television appearance since the ’70s – not counting her handful of voiceover and narration guest roles in the ’90s and early ’00s – though certainly not her first time starring in a thriller. Foster is joined by a number of other talented actors, including Kali Reis, Fiona Shaw, and Christopher Eccleston.
Here’s everyone you need to know in True Detective: Night Country, and where you’ve seen them before.

“True Detective: Night Country” Review – Issa López’s Gripping, Genre-Bending Season Sets a High Bar
Showrunner/Writer/Director Issa López makes a drastic departure from the previous three seasons of the noir crime series “True Detective” by relocating the setting to Northern Alaska at the start of Polar Night, launching “True Detective: Night Country” with a scene that hails straight out of horror. This inciting event set at an arctic research station, complete with knowing winks to The Thing, sets the atmospheric tone for a compelling, intense season that easily sets a high bar for the series.
Investigating the mysterious and sudden disappearance of the research station’s inhabitants, with no trace left behind save for a woman’s tongue found beneath a desk, is gruff Ennis police chief Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster). It’s the precise type of event that a small town like Ennis isn’t accustomed to handling, making the already acerbic Danvers all the pricklier and more frustrated. That’s never...

Looking back, 2014 was truly a different time: Obama was in office, skinny jeans still reigned supreme and “True Detective” established itself with an unabashed emphasis on masculinity. Three years earlier, Ryan Murphy had revived the anthology series with “American Horror Story,” but it took the imprimatur of HBO, massive movie stars and a “serious” genre like crime to give the format real prestige. In pairing Matthew McConaughey with Woody Harrelson on a journey through the bayou, creator Nic Pizzolatto elevated some of that genre’s clichés and left others intact — including a marginal presence for women, crowded into bit roles as wives and villains to make room for portentous monologues and four-minute tracking shots.

At 60 years old, Jodie Foster has gracefully accepted her new place in the industry as a mentor, offering her wisdom as a seasoned veteran to the next generation of actors navigating Hollywood.
“The part they don’t tell you when you turn 60 is that it’s so much fun because it’s not your time anymore. It’s someone else’s time, and the best part of getting older is realizing that you actually have something to give back. You have something to contribute, to help support other people’s performances, and to help spur other voices that haven’t been heard before,” said Foster.
It’s a sentiment her “True Detectives” co-stars echoed on the red carpet on Tuesday night (which comes days after Foster’s comments regarding Gen-z’s work ethic made headlines), telling Variety that they earned a master-class in acting from the “Nyad” star.
