"We make the rules now, all four of us. We'll be a family of 'Mountain Men' in no time." Samuel Goldwyn Films has debuted an official trailer for an indie off-the-grid thriller titled Manifest West, from filmmaker duo Joe Dietsch & Louie Gibson. The film is intriguing coming-of-age story told through the eyes of a young girl whose family spirals out of control after they decide to live off the grid. It had its world premiere at the Mammoth Film Festival, where it won Best Genre Film, earlier this year. The film stars Annet Mahendru, Milo Gibson, Lexy Kolker, Michael Cudlitz, and the comedian Tim Heidecker (giving a very serious performance this time). This starts out so nice and uplifting, the story of a family trying to make a life on their own in the woods - reminds me of Captain Fantastic. But then things quickly get intense and twisted and dark,...

Manifest West Trailer: Tim Heidecker Is Continuing To Broaden His Horizons With The Serious Thriller
As wonderful as the advancements in technology have been for a multitude of reasons, the inability to ever truly go off the grid often leaves lingering existential and downright dystopian feelings. The newest film from Samuel Goldwyn Films, "Manifest West" sees a family attempt to leave the world behind, becoming self-sufficient and living off of the land. Unfortunately, this isn't the age of manifest destiny and the problems that existed before don't magically wash away with a change of zip code and a refusal to send children to public schools. The coming-of-age film from Joe Dietsch and Louie Gibson centers on a family that grows increasingly violent after moving into the wilderness, told from the perspective of a young girl watching her family fall apart through her very eyes.
Annet Mahendru and Milo Gibson star as the parental figures, with Lexy Kolker as the film's main protagonist. In a bit of inspired casting,...

Exclusive: Samuel Goldwyn Films has acquired North American rights to the drama Manifest West, starring Lexy Kolker (Shooter), Annet Mahendru (Father Stu), Milo Gibson (Under the Stadium Lights), Tim Heidecker (Spin Me Round) and Michael Cudlitz (Clarice), slating it for release in theaters and on digital platforms this fall.
The film from writer-directors Joe Dietsch and Louie Gibson (Happy Hunting) is a coming-of-age story, told through the eyes of a 10-year old girl whose family moves off the grid into untamed North American Wilderness. It’s their attempt to establish normalcy, to thrive off the land, and escape the pressures of modern society. But the family has its own internal pressures building, and you can’t escape what’s going on in your own household, no matter how far you move up a mountain.

So, you might have started watching Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein's Freaks on Netflix because hey, who couldn't use some escapism in a sci-fi thriller these days? It's X-Men meets Stranger Things meets broad social commentary! Suffice to say, there are a lot of high concepts laced within the narrative, and the movie subverts our expectations in major ways. If you're wondering what the heck just happened after viewing Freaks, we've got you covered with a thorough, spoiler-y breakdown of the film's biggest twists.
Let's take it back to the beginning. The movie starts by parsing out the relationship between seven-year-old Chloe (Lexy Kolker) and her father Henry (Emile Hirsch). Chloe's lived inside an abandoned house her entire life because her dad's afraid of what the outside people might do to them. Whenever she disobeys him, he locks her in a closet. While skimming Netflix's latest releases, you might encounter a Canadian movie called Freaks, which has already been surrounded by a ton of buzz. Directed by Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein, the film's twisty trailer offers a promising sci-fi thriller story centered on a young girl who discovers the outside world after spending her life inside a shabby house. It's certainly a mindbender, with an absorbing lead performance from newcomer Lexy Kolker, as well as support from a solid cast that features Emile Hirsch and Bruce Dern. If you're keen to learn all the relevant (and spoiler-free!) details of Freaks before adding it to your Netflix queue, read on.
Basically, Freaks follows a 7-year-old girl named Chloe (Kolker), whose disturbed and controlling father (Hirsch) locks her in a run-down house to keep her safe. Chloe longs for the outside world and her mother, although her father, who strangely bleeds from his eyes,...

Seven-year-old Chloe never leaves her ramshackle suburban home unless under the watchful eye of her paranoid father. Instead, he trains his daughter to adopt an assumed identity if she’s ever separated from him, or to hide in a well-provisioned panic room if he should not return from one of his infrequent forays outside. However something clearly isn’t quite right with this weird family dynamic and Chloe is determined to find out what exactly lies outside the door her father is so frightened of.
I originally saw Freaks way back in February at Frightfest’s Glasgow event and since then the film has been percolating in my brain and given that it’s out now on DVD and Blu-ray it’s the perfect time to revisit the film and confirm my suspicions…...

Directors Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein's Freaks portrays the story of 7-year-old Chloe (Lexy Kolker), who lives in both fear under her father's (Emile Hirsch) protective and paranoid control, and fascination of the outside world, where Abnormals create a constant threat - or so she believes.
When a mysterious stranger (Bruce Dern) offers her a glimpse of what's really happening outside, Chloe soon finds that while the truth isn't so simple, the danger is very real.

Caught between her protective father and the outside world she's forbidden to explore, seven-year-old Chloe is stuck in her own eerie fairy tale in Freaks, the new sci-fi film from Adam Stein and Zach Lipovsky. With Freaks now in theaters from Well Go USA, and its score now available digitally, we caught up with composer Tim Wynn to discuss creating the unique theme for Chloe, collaborating with Stein and Lipovsky (after their previous work on the Disney Xd series Mech-4X), and the instruments he used to create the music of Freaks.
Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, and congratulations on your score for Freaks! How did you get involved as the composer for this film?
Tim Wynn: Thanks, I really appreciate it. I am very excited about Freaks being released in theatres. I met Zach and Adam, the writer-director team behind Freaks, while working on Disney’s Mech-X4.

Universal Pictures has acquired the rights to a new family adventure film project called Outside The Box. The film is said to have fantasy elements with the tone of the movies made by Steven Spielberg’s Amblin banner in the 1980s.
The film comes from Adam B. Stein and Zach Lipovsky, who are behind the upcoming sci-fi thriller Freaks. They will write and direct the film, but unfortunately, we don’t have any plot details to share with you at this time.

Freaks is a first rate sci-fi thriller about a Chloe (Lexy Kolker), a 7-year-old whose father (Emile Hirsch) may be too paranoid for his own good. Science fiction on a budget can be tricky sometimes to properly pull off. There are countless instances where not having the required resources can compromise an otherwise extravagant vision. However, there are also plenty of times where working without a ton of money can lead to extra creativity. Here, with Freaks, the small budget actually is a boon to the project. Focusing in on the quartet of main cast members, as well as the unseen implications of the concept, leads to a truly engaging experience. Whereas the X-Men franchise has gone off the rails as it got more and more expensive, this little film is actually far superior, for a fraction of the price tag. Taking place after an unseen but often mentioned cataclysmic event, the world now has a number of “freaks” in it, dubbed “abnormals” by the government and hunted down/imprisoned, when they’re not just out and out killed.

Emile Hirsch and Lexy Kolker in Freaks Photo: Fantasia Film Festival
The story of a seven year old girl, Chloë (Lexy Kolker), whose father tells her that she should never leave their home or bad people will kill her, Freaks is a rollercoaster ride of a movie that keeps building on its high concept premise and taking the viewer to unexpected places. It enjoyed a rapturous reception at Frightfest Glasgow earlier this year and recently screened at the Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal. I arranged to speak to co-directors Zach Lipovsky and Adam B Stein whilst they were there.
Primarily a three-harder, the film also stars Emile Hirsch as Chloë’s father and Bruce Dern as the mysterious ice cream man who lingers outside their home in his truck. It’s a film that criss-crosses genres and has multiple layers of story. I start by asking how this complicated set of ideas came together.

"Look what you've done!" "I saved us!" Well Go USA has debuted the second official trailer for an indie sci-fi thriller called Freaks, which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last year and played at the Sitges Film Festival. This indie superpowers film is very similar in concept to Room, but if the kid trapped inside actually had special superpowers - which she doesn't really know about. Chloe is locked in her home by her protective father, but when Mr. Snowcone lures her out, she discovers a whole new world and learns more about her special powers and how they can be used. Lexy Kolker plays Chloe, with a small cast including Emile Hirsch, Bruce Dern, Amanda Crew, and Grace Park. Emile Hirsch takes “overprotective father” to the next level in Freaks, a curious sci-fi thriller that reveals very little in its first trailer. Are you ready for some old-fashioned scares before the summer closes out? Following its world premiere at last year’s Tiff, Well Go USA Entertainment has unveiled the first intense trailer for Freaks, set for an August release. Directed by collaborators Zach Lipovsky and Adam B Stein, this psychological sci-fi bending thriller conveys the story of seven year old Chloe (Lexy Kolker) who has been locked in an abandoned house by her paranoid father (Emile Hirsch), protecting her from unseen horrors in the process. She is eventually persuaded into leaving her home by the mysterious Mr. Snowcone (Bruce Dern) discovering a bizarre and threatening new world seemingly unlike our own.
Jared Mobarak wrote in his review, “The film ultimately expands to encompass a worthwhile mythology with ample sequel potential…Fantasies and dreams crafted by a seven-year-old girl’s imagination give pause because the results of such interludes have a lasting effect on the future.

Here’s an unsettling trailer for an upcoming sci-fi thriller called Freaks. The film stars Emile Hirsch, Lexy Kolker (Shooter), and Bruce Dern, as well as Amanda Crew and Grace Park.
The trailer shows us a world where either the world has gone mad, or the man inside this house has. The man is played by Hirsch, and he is looking a little nutty. It’s hard to tell if he is paranoid or using safety precautions. He keeps the house pretty locked down and has a daughter he is trying to protect from the outside world. We don’t really know what is wrong out there, but it is pretty intriguing.
Here’s the synopsis:

A chintzy yet well-intentioned slab of socially conscious science-fiction, Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein’s “Freaks” is a familiar tale of super-powered outcasts who are forced to hide their gifts from the rest of humanity, but the appeal of this derivative slop is all in the telling. The fun here — and there is some decent fun to be had — has nothing to do with the story, and everything to do with how patiently the filmmakers let us in on its secrets. In other words, “Freaks” is undercooked red meat for “Westworld” superfans, Reddit sleuths, and anyone else who tends to engage with genre entertainment as though it were a puzzle for them to solve.
For others, however, this low-budget “X-Men” clone may feel more like an exasperating 104-minute audition for whatever franchise superhero fare its makers are clearly hoping to be hired for next.

Buyers are putting down their Momofuku cookies and handing over the cash, as film sales are in full swing at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Saban Films and Neon, who have made waves this past year by acquiring several titles at previous festivals, each secured deals, while usual players Sony Pictures Classics, Magnolia, Focus Features and Netflix have also picked up some titles.
While “Wild Rose,” arguably one of the hottest titles for sale at Tiff, has been snatched up by Neon, there are still various hot films up for grabs. For example, Natalie Portman’s “Vox Lux” still has no distributor, neither does Elisabeth Moss’ “Her Smell.”

Directed by Adam Stein and Zach Lipovsky, Freaks effectively proves that you don’t need an overstuffed budget to create thrilling and innovative science fiction stories for the big screen, with the duo instead relying on a well-crafted and character-driven script, as well as some cleverly utilized digital tricks, never allowing any budgetary constraints to get in the way of their ambition as filmmakers looking to make their mark. Suffice to say, Freaks is the real deal, and features a trio of impressive performances from Bruce Dern, Emile Hirsch, and relative newcomer Lexy Kolker, who more than holds her own against her older cast mates.
Freaks introduces us to the world of the “Abnormals” (or “Freaks” for those who are a little less sensitive when it comes to labeling people who are different than others), a sizable portion of the population who have developed certain psycho-kinetic abilities, which understandably scares...

Exclusive: An all-night auction has resulted in Well Go USA taking English-speaking rights to Freaks for a deal in the $2 million range. Directed by Zach Lipovsky & Adam Stein from their script, the film is a genre-bending psychological thriller described as Room meets Monsters and underscores Well Go’s aspirations to elevate to the tastemaker space that distributors like Neon, A24 and Bleecker Street reside in. The film will get a theatrical release.
Freaks made its premiere Saturday night at the Toronto Film Festival.
Lexy Kolker plays a bold 7-year-old girl whose paranoid father (Emile Hirsch) teaches her to be afraid of the world, or even leaving the house. She bolts when he’s dozing and runs smack into an odd ice cream salesman (Bruce Dern) who entices her into his truck and introduces her into a dangerous world that is haunted by the threat of freaks that look normal but are markedly different.

If the word out of Venice and Telluride wasn’t enough, the first four days of the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival has made it very clear: This is a dazzling fall festival season.
Bradley Cooper’s “A Star Is Born” has the look of a big hit and an awards contender. Damien Chazelle’s “First Man,” which premiered in Venice but had a spectacular IMAX debut on Sunday afternoon in Toronto, could be the same. Alfonso Cuaron’s “Roma,” which doesn’t officially bow at Tiff until Monday, is surpassingly intimate and enormously powerful, and seized the conversation on Saturday at Tiff when it won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival.
Throw in a solid batch of other films, including Paul Greengrass’ gripping “22 July,” Dan Fogelman’s surprisingly dark “Life Itself” and Karyn Kusama’s alternately drained and brutal “Destroyer,” and the fact that nothing became an unexpected...

It’s weird to think about a movie like Push today — an under-appreciated, much-maligned sci-fi that I’d argue is a lot better than the legacy it’s been given. The X-Men and Spider-Man trilogies had completed by the time it was released and Iron Man just hit theaters the year before to usher in what would become the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And yet here was a smaller-scale, original piece centering upon a group of mutants that could exist outside the realm of built-in fandoms. Perhaps that which made it special at a moment in history on the cusp of becoming inundated with superhero sagas was its downfall. IP proved more important to studios and audiences alike than opening minds to something different. I hope Freaks doesn’t suffer the same fate.
