From Disney darling to pop star, Dove Cameron's career has undergone quite the evolution since she began acting in her early teens. The versatile actor's earliest fans grew up alongside her as she played identical twins "Liv and Maddie" for four seasons on the hit Disney Channel show. But Cameron's professional acting career began even earlier, when she memorably guest-starred in two episodes of "Shameless" as Holly Herkimer, a young woman who was interested in Lip Gallagher (Jeremy Allen White).
Cameron's early work in "Shameless" and "Liv and Maddie" showed off the actor's range. Right from the start of her career, it was clear she could pull off comedic and dramatic roles, just as she could pivot between family-friendly fare and more daring projects. In recent years, she's continued to challenge herself as an actor with roles in B.J. Novak's directorial debut, "Vengeance" and Hulu's comedic...

In 1977, Robert Plant expressed his desire to record with Stevie Nicks. Fleetwood Mac was at the height of their fame, having recently released Rumours, and Plant, like many others, found Nicks fascinating. The trouble was, he had a hard time remembering her name. The two singers never did work together, but their writing styles prove that they would have been great partners.

In 1977, Plant spoke to Interview Magazine. When discussing the music he listened to at home, he mentioned wanting Nicks to sing with Led Zeppelin.
“Uh, I like Little Feat, Fleetwood Mac — obviously,” he said. “That little lady ought to come and sing on one of our albums. If she were to come sing on one of our albums — it would…What’s her name? — Stevie…”

When “RuPaul’s Drag Race” launched on Logo a decade ago, it was watched by so few people that the inaugural run was later lovingly dubbed “The Lost Season.” But as the years and seasons of that reality competition series went on, its popularity grew exponentially and its influence subsequently spread over other parts of the entertainment industry — from a sketch on “Saturday Night Live,” to seeing the queens who had come through the competition guest star on scripted television shows including “Playing House” and “Room 104,” to having drag performers become integral talent on the big screen.
“It’s this whole new economy and business that has come out of this show — and an economy and a business that are shining a light on artists that are heroes,” “Drag Race” executive producer Randy Barbato told Variety last year. “It’s not an easy gig, being a drag queen.”

Songwriter Linda Perry jumped at the opportunity to work with Dolly Parton on the movie “Dumplin.'” Initially the prolific musician was hired to recreate one of the country legend’s classic tunes and possibly write an original one, “but as soon as I got in the door,” she reveals, “I was like, I’m doing a whole album, baby. I don’t care what you guys want, but this is going to be Dolly Parton’s next album.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Perry above.

Based on the bestselling young adult novel by Julie Murphy, “Dumplin'” centers on Willowdean (Danielle Macdonald), a plus-size teenager whose mother (Jennifer Aniston) was a former beauty queen. She enters the Miss Teen Bluebonnet pageant as a protest, which inspires more nontraditional contestants to compete.

Dolly Parton is the type of celebrity who, the more you find out about her, the more impossible it is not to admire her.
The iconic singer-songwriter has not only been making music since the 1960s when she burst on the scene with her debut album, Hello, I'm Dolly, but she's also dabbled in being an actress, record producer, and philanthropist (her charity donated its 100 millionth book in February). On top of all that, she's also an incredibly savvy businesswoman, which means she's maintained ownership over most of her own songs over the last few decades, which is what allowed her to lend her music to Netflix's latest rom-com hit, Dumplin'.
The film follows the story of Willowdean Dickson (Danielle Macdonald), a "self-proclaimed fat girl" who decides to regain her confidence by entering the beauty pageant run by her thin, judgmental mother (Jennifer Aniston) in her small Texas town.

If you would've told me that a movie about a beauty pageant would end up being one of 2018's most empowering movies, I probably would've had a good laugh. Women prancing around on stage in bathing suits, getting scored for their appearance? Thanks, but no thanks. Fortunately my ideas about the entire process were completely flipped by Dumplin', a dazzling comedy-drama with a Dolly Parton-themed soundtrack so good I could cry. (Full disclosure: I did cry multiple times while watching. No shame.)
The adaptation of Julie Murphy's New York Times bestselling Ya novel was brought to the screen by writer Kristin Hahn, which led to her longtime friend Jennifer Aniston joining the film, and soon everything else - including singer-songwriter and all-around queen Dolly Parton's involvement - fell into place. As seems to be the case so often these days, Netflix has once again produced a breakout comedy movie with sharp humor alongside a heartwarming story. The story of a young woman protesting her mother's beauty pageants, Dumplin' has quickly become the latest in Netflix's lineup of smart, sweet comedies. Although the movie tells a complete story itself, we're already wondering what the odds are of getting a sequel? After all, we can always use more movies like this in our lives!
Although Netflix, as per usual, hasn't commented one way or the other yet, Dumplin' does seem like a likely candidate for a sequel. The biggest reason? It's based on a Ya novel by Julie Murphy that already has a sequel, Puddin'. Murphy's second book switches the focus from original protagonist Willowdean Dickson to her lovable classmate Millie Michalchuk, who ends up crossing paths with mean girl Callie over...

“I’m not the Dalai Lama, but I’ll try to offer up a few words of advice,” Dolly Parton chirped in her 2008 single “Better Get to Livin’,” before doling out exactly the brand of wholesome, no-nonsense wisdom you’d expect from the indefatigable country queen: If you keep your head up, keep moving forward and say the odd little prayer, life will more or less work out fine.
It’s no surprise that “Better Get to Livin'” features prominently in “Dumplin’,” a film as big on homespun heart as it is short on the letter ‘G,’ and one that certainly places Dolly and Dalai on more or less the same spiritual plane. The singer may not star in Anne Fletcher’s lovable self-help comedy — about a plus-size, Parton-worshipping teen who shakes up her small Texan community by entering a local beauty pageant — but from her integral narrative presence to...

Nearly a decade after “The Proposal” made over $160M at the domestic box office — the Sandra Bullock- and Ryan Reynolds-starring charmer still ranks as the seventh highest-grossing rom-com of all-time — director Anne Fletcher is going the route of so many successful filmmakers before her: she’s stopped relying on studio gigs to carry her career. Between her new Netflix feature, “Dumplin’,” and a burgeoning television career, Fletcher has stayed nimble as ever, emblematic of an industry that so often forces its creators to evolve quickly.
After the monstrous success of “The Proposal,” the kind of box office juggernaut that made so many portend that the studio rom-com wasn’t dead after all, Fletcher helmed two more studio offerings (Paramount’s “The Guilt Trip” and Warner Bros.’ “Hot Pursuit”). Australian actress Danielle Macdonald first caught the attention of Hollywood with a star-making turn in Geremy Jasper’s 2017 Sundance hit “Patti Cake$,” which cast her as an unlikely heroine saddled with a baked good-based nickname yearning to break free from expectation and convention by using her unexpected skills in rap to shine. She’s trying something similar in Anne Fletcher’s “Dumplin,'” in which she is set as an unlikely heroine saddled with a baked good-based nickname yearning to break free from expectation and convention by using her unexpected skills in beauty pageants to shine. And yet Fletcher’s Netflix film offers a new glimpse at Macdonald’s evolving talent, allowing her to blend Ya convention with genuine heart in the mother-daughter dramedy.

If your guilty pleasures expand to include Hallmark-style sentimentality this time of year, you might consider adding “Dumplin'” to your viewing lineup. It has nothing to do with the holiday season, but it’s wrapped as neatly as any gift you might find under a Christmas tree.
Though directed by rom-com vet Anne Fletcher and written by producer Kristin Hahn (“The Departed”), this modest dramedy — which is being released simultaneously in theaters and on Netflix — is a far better fit for the small screen. But a big heart and strong cast go a long way towards elevating its prosaic approach.
Most of the credit goes to the two leads, Jennifer Aniston and Danielle Macdonald, who play a markedly mismatched mother and daughter. Aniston’s strenuously meticulous Rosie was, as she’ll happily remind anyone who asks, 1991’s Miss Teen Blue Bonnet. This might not seem like much to us,...

As sweet, corny, and comforting as your grandma’s creamed corn, “Dumplin’” may not be a balanced meal of a movie, but it’s an enjoyably carb-y binge. Based on Julie Murphy’s Ya novel, director Anne Fletcher’s gentle comedy is a Southern charmer, all set to the songs of Dolly Parton.

Dumplin' doesn't nail its mother-daughter drama, but delights with its Dolly Parton-fueled story of female friendship & self-acceptance.
Dumplin', Netflix's feature film adaptation of Julie Murphy's bestselling book, shows its adaptation strings in its tale of the smalltown beauty pageant wedged between a mother and daughter, but soars in its depiction of adolescent girl friendship.
Dumplin' is the story of a clever, self-aware Texan teenaged girl named Willowdeen (Danielle Macdonald). Struggling to connect with herself and her beauty pageant-obsessed mother, Rosie (Jennifer Aniston), in the wake of her Aunt Lucy's (Hilliary Begley) death, Will enters the Clover County Miss Teen Bluebonnet competition as a form of angry protest against the fat-shaming culture she and her Aunt Lucy have had to endure for their entire lives.
Directed by Anne Fletcher from a script by Kristin Hahn, Dumplin' mostly refuses to fall into "tragic fat girl" tropes, which is one of the film's greatest strengths.

It's not often that Jennifer Aniston takes on a role that makes us kind of hate her a little bit, but Dumplin' seems to be her chance to change that.
The Office Christmas Party actress stars in the upcoming Netflix dramedy, based on the New York Times bestselling book by Julie Murphy, which follows an outspoken, curvy, Dolly Parton-obsessed teenager named Willowdean (Danielle Macdonald) as she navigates life under the rule of her overbearing pageant queen mother (Aniston) in small town Texas. In an act of protest against her mother's never-ending stream of pageants and disapproval, Will decides to enter her mother's local Miss Teen Blue Bonnet competition, which in turn encourages other contestants in town to do the same. Macdonald's comedic timing as she delivers lines like "I'm not the Joan of Arc of fat girls" already has us hooked.

The original song Dolly Parton co-wrote and sang for the Netflix film “Dumplin’” is called “Girl in the Movies,” about a teen who dreams of being on the silver screen. It’s not autobiographical: Growing up, the country-pop superstar never envisioned herself as a movie star… and she never really saw herself as one in the decades since, either, despite some significant evidence to the contrary in the 1980s.
“I didn’t long to be a movie star. I just wanted to be a star,” she says. “I always figured it would have to do with my music. I kind of became one in a little sort of a way, with ‘9 to 5’ and ‘(The Best Little) Whorehouse (in Texas)’ and ‘Steel Magnolias.’ And now we’re getting ready to do a sequel to ‘9 to 5’ after 40 years. Anne Fletcher (“Step Up,” “27 Dresses,” the massive box office juggernaut that was “The Proposal”) is getting back behind the camera with an all-new indie offering: “Dumplin,'” based on the well-received Ya novel by Julie Murphy.
“Dumplin'” follows Willowdean, the daughter of Rosie, a former beauty pageant queen who now runs the local Texas pageant. To get back at her (very different) mother, Willowdean and her friends ban together to join the pageant and presumably throw it into disarray. What begins as a prank for Willowdean suddenly turns into her leading a group of misfit teenagers into the vicious realms of pageantry. The film is reportedly “music-driven” and in the realm of “Bring It On” and “Pitch Perfect.”
