Recently there has been a spate of action movies centered around child trafficking/kidnapping. From Malaysia's “Walid” to Vietnam's “Foggy Mountain”, it's a subgenre taken directly from news headlines and provides plenty of opportunity for emotional drama amidst the carnage. With the imminent release in the west from Film Movement, we get an opportunity to take in another example but one with considerable pedigree. “578 Magnum” was the Vietnamese submission for the 95th Academy Awards for Best International Feature. So the question is, does it live up to the reputation?

After leaving the Special Forces, container truck driver and single father Hùng (Alexandre Nguyen) dedicates his life to raising his six-year-old daughter. But when she gets kidnapped and assaulted, Hùng relies on his martial arts training and combat skills to hunt down the twisted millionaire responsible. His mission of vengeance takes him on a journey deep into the Vietnamese underworld, where he faces off against legions of bloodthirsty gangsters working for one of the world's most dangerous crime syndicates.
From award-winning director Luong Dinh Dung and featuring action sequences by Oh Sea Young (Avengers: Age of Ultron), 578 Magnum was selected as Vietnam's 2023 official Oscar entry for Best International Feature.

It was Dung Luong Dinh’s dream to make an action movie one day. Not only that he fullfilled his dream, he was also invited to present it in the Official Selection Competition of Tallinn Black Nights. “Magnum 578” is a strange customer, and certainly a type of film previously unseen in Vietnam. Back in 2019, Dinh already challenged us with the animal blood drenched drama “Drowsy City” (that competed in the Official Selection as well), which can also be qualified as a film previously unseen, and not just in Vietnam.
We met the director during the festival, and we were lucky that his producer Thien Huong Nguyen was present not only as the translator, but also as a very valuable source of information regarding the film’s production, shooting locations and some technical details.

This time, no poultry was harmed in Dung Luong Dinh’s film which – like his previous one “Drowsy City” did back in 2019 – competes for the Grand Prix in the Official Selection of Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival. Instead of feathers, there are lots of fists and bullets flying in “Magnum 578”, Dinh’s first attempt at a full blooded action thriller that challenged us with the extensive filtering, and literally – the tiniest of violins incessantly vibrating from the opening credits to the closing scene. It would be interesting to find out why the film’s composer Dong-jun Lee thought that it would be a good idea to set the melodramatic tunes to a story full of action, wild chases through the Vietnamese mountains and kung-fu bashings. It’s like having Mariah Carey falsetto-ing through “The Fast and The Furious” on loop.

Stars: Steven Seagal, Jade Ewen, Florin Piersic Jr., Jacob Grodnik, Jonathan Rosenthal, Ovidiu Niculescu, Claudiu Bleont, Troy Miller, Alexandre Nguyen, Andrei Ciopec | Written by Chuck Hustmyre, Keoni Waxman | Directed by Keoni Waxman
When Decker (Seagal), a highly skilled ex-dea agent, crosses paths with Lisa (Jade Ewen), she approaches him with a seductive proposition: help her steal two million dollars from a drug kingpin’s car, guarded by Parisian Police, and share in the bounty. But, even if they outrun the cops, can they outgun the hit squads sent by the furious, sadistic drug lord to reclaim the loot?
From a story written by a former federal agent, Chuck Hustmyre, End of a Gun is yet another collaboration between Seagal and director Keoni Waxman – who, it seems, has become Seagal’s go-to guy when it comes to capturing the movie hard man at his best. Well, unless you count the last effort from the duo,...
