Exclusive: Mamie Gummer (True Detective), Caitlin FitzGerald (Succession) and Candice King (The Vampire Diaries) are set as leads in We Were Liars, Prime Video’s series adaptation of E. Lockhart’s YA novel We Were Liars, which hails from Julie Plec, Carina Adly MacKenzie, Universal Television and Amazon MGM Studios.
This marks a reunion for King and Plec. King was a series regular on Tvd, co-created and executive produced by Plec, and recurred/guest starred on two offshoots created/executive produced by Plec, The Originals and Legacies, reprising her role as Caroline Forbes. MacKenzie also was a writer-producer on The Originals.
We Were Liars is a tragic love story and an amnesia thriller set on a privately owned island off the coast of Massachusetts. It centers on the wealthy, seemingly perfect Sinclair family, who spend every summer on their private island. Gummer, FitzGerald and King play the three Sinclair sisters.

The Best Limited Series/TV Movie Writing category has 111 submissions on the 2023 Emmys ballot, giving us six nominees this year. With the same number of nominees last year, they were “Dopesick” (“The People vs. Purdue Pharma” by Danny Strong), “The Dropout” (“I’m in a Hurry” by Elizabeth Meriwether), “Maid” (“Snaps” by Molly Smith Metzler), “Station Eleven” (“Unbroken Circle” by Patrick Somerville), “Impeachment: American Crime Story” (“Man Handled” by Sarah Burgess), and the winner “The White Lotus” (Mike White).
What makes last year interesting is that half of the shows in the category were not nominated for Best Limited Series, something that perhaps could repeat itself to a degree with this year’s potential nominees. Another thing of note is that almost all of the top contenders this year that had the option to submit multiple episodes only went with one, preventing any possibility of vote-splitting.

For the third year running, Annecy’s artistic residency program accompanied three selected projects on a six-month adventure, beginning with a three-month script workshop before moving to Annecy’s Papeteries Image Factory for a similar bout of tailored mentorships and visual experimentation. At the end, the filmmakers launch their development titles at the MIFA market.
“Often when filmmakers start a project, they are expected to advance too quickly, without the necessary time for reflection and experimentation,” said coordinator Géraldine Baché. “They have to rush into production because time is money, so we wanted to give them that time, to offer three months to come and explore, to test things and find a kind of visual identity for their project.”
These are the three projects from this year’s selection.

Patrick Somerville, creator of the HBO series “Station Eleven” and the Netflix show “Maniac,” was among a slew of Hollywood writers to weigh in late Monday after the Writers Guild of America went on strike, saying the union’s negotiating points firmly lined up with reason — and the studios knew it.
“We’re going to do this because our guild is strong enough to do it,” said Somerville, who had changed his Twitter ID to “Strikerick Somverville” in an apparent writerly flourish. “The ask is level-headed, and even they know that we’re right. Collective action is the one place they can’t win.”

Nearly eight months have gone by since we heard that Mary Elizabeth Winstead (10 Cloverfield Lane) was set to star in the sci-fi thriller Ursa Major with Xochitl Gomez (Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness) – but now Deadline has revealed that Winstead had to drop out of the project due to scheduling conflicts. Taking over the role that had previously been assigned to Winstead is Jessica Biel (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2003).
Twin brother directors Jonathan and Josh Baker are at the helm of Ursa Major, working from a screenplay written by Colleen O’Brien, Katie French, and Station Eleven creator Patrick Somerville. That trio crafted the story of Charlie (Biel) and Natalie (Gomez), a mother and daughter pair of survivors trapped on a harsh Earth-like planet. Jessica Biel (“The Sinner,” The Texas Chainsaw Massacre) has been set to star alongside Xochitl Gomez (Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness) in the upcoming sci-fi thriller Ursa Major, Deadline reports today.
The thriller hails from twin brother directors Jonathan and Josh Baker (Kin) and is scheduled to head into production this fall.
Ursa Major takes place “on an Earth-like planet, where a mother (Biel) and daughter (Gomez) fight for survival while hiding from a group of relentless hunters. With the added threat of an imminent and deadly storm, Natalie — now a teenager — begins questioning her mother, Charlie, about who they really are, how they got here, and what they need to do to survive.”
Based on that premise and the team behind it, it feels safe to assume there will be surprises and potential twists in store for the mother and daughter as they attempt to evade their pursuers.

A deadly virus that wipes out most of the population; a scarcely inhabited post-apocalyptic world; a man traveling with a young girl he's just met (and accidentally adopted). I'm talking, of course, about the sensational HBO series — not the one that's currently taking Sunday nights by storm — but the one that dropped on HBO Max last year. "Station Eleven" is a miniseries following a small group of survivors, whose lives are connected in unexpected ways. We see their stories told through time, from the crumbling days of society to the new worlds they create in its wake. At the center of it are two people: Kirsten (a role shared by Matilda Lawler and Mackenzie Davis) and Jeevan (Himesh Patel), two strangers who find each other before everything falls apart. Unable to abandon the little girl he meets just when the world is ending, Jeevan sticks by Kirsten and heads to...

Danielle Deadwyler’s 2022 was quite remarkable. The actress received some of the year’s best reviews for her performance in “Till,” which garnered her recognition from the Screen Actors Guild Awards and Critics Choice Awards among other citations. But it’s arguable her best performance came in another project: The HBO Max limited series “Station Eleven.”
Based on the book by Emily St. John Mandel, “Station Eleven” is an apocalyptic story about how the survivors of a catastrophic flu pandemic that kills off 99 percent of the world’s population rebuild in the aftermath. Deadwyler’s character, Miranda, is a key figure in the mythos: she’s the author of the graphic novel “Station Eleven,” which in the story plays a huge role in humanity’s future. Written by Patrick Somerville, “Station Eleven” moves through numerous time frames, allowing even characters like Miranda an opportunity to shine – and the result is...

Gael García Bernal stopped by The Hollywood Reporter‘s Studio at Sundance, presented by Heineken Silver and Origin Spring Water, to discuss his new film Cassandro. The movie, directed by Roger Ross Williams, tells the true story of the homosexual “exótico” wrestler Saúl Armendáriz, who created the famous eponymous wrestling character and rose to international stardom.
While in the Sundance Studio promoting Cassandro, Bernal was asked about his role as Arthur in the criminally underrated HBO literary adaptation Station Eleven, based on the graphic novel by Emily St. John Mandel, and whether we might see him in a rumored second St. John Mandel television project developed from her 2020 novel The Glass Hotel.
“That would be incredible, no?” he responded. “That would be lovely.”

This story about “Till” star Danielle Deadwyler first appeared in the Awards Preview issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
You may well find that you can’t quite shake the haunted look in Danielle Deadwyler’s eyes in “Till” or forget about her anguished cries of grief. As Mamie Till-Mobley, whose civil rights activism was born from the blood of the brutal murder of her 14-year-old son Emmett, Deadwyler is masterful, bringing nuance to a woman whose pain was unimaginable and whose resolve to make change from her tragedy was unrivaled. To step into such a role was nothing if not intimidating — and while the actress didn’t hesitate to take the job, she knew it also required some caution.
“There was a need to give it utter and complete attention and reverence,” Deadwyler said. “I couldn’t rush the way you sometimes read scripts. You know that it is...

The Directors Guild of America rolled out the first round of nominations for their annual awards, consisting of the Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Television, Commercials, and Documentary categories for projects from 2022. Tomorrow, the guild will announce its full film nominations, including its lauded First Feature.
The DGA Awards are voted on by over 18,000 members of the guild. The 2022 nominees include TV series broadcast between March 1, 2022, and December 31, 2022. Voting for the awards occurred between December 9, 2022, and January 6, 2023.
First question: Did members of the Director’s Guild watch any TV dramas this winter? The Dramatic Series field is stocked with long-time DGA favorites in Vince Gilligan, who snagged a nomination for “Better Call Saul’s” final season, Jason Bateman, who earned his third nomination for “Ozark,” and Ben Stiller, who won for “Escape at Dannemora” in 2019. Each December, acclaimed television series from the previous 12 months are discussed in the form of “best of...” lists. In these, the same shows are usually bandied around – some deserving (Better Call Saul), others not so (we won’t name names).
Often, though, several key titles are omitted – not because they aren’t any good, but because they haven’t been widely seen. This is understandable; after all, there’s an increasing amount of television to wade through every week.
Perhaps this is why these lists are skewed towards the high-profile releases – the ones that happen to be right there when people browse Netflix or whichever streaming service they have. But the fact remains, there’s a goldmine of under-the-radar shows out there to discover.
In the past year, all of the below deserved more love.

I’ll admit: Even as a professional television critic, I had to look up what cable or streaming service released “The Porter” this year. The CBC original series from Arnold Pinnock and Bruce Ramsey landed two Film Independent Spirit Award nominations Tuesday morning, and in order to be eligible, a TV show “must be available [in the U.S.] via network, basic cable, pay cable, pay television, pay-per-view, interactive cable, broadband, or digital distribution through streaming platforms.”
So where did the organization’s nominating committees dig up a series with only seven reviews on Rotten Tomatoes? BET+!
As a fan of television, not just a critic, these are the kind of nominations I love to see — and you should, too! Not only is the awards machine a duplicative endeavor, where the most popular picks get spotlighted so often it’s easier to tune them out than recognize why they’re winning this time, but...

Patrick Somerville, showrunner of HBO Max’s limited series Station Eleven, has addressed the issue of shows disappearing from the Warner Bros. Discovery streamer.
“TV world is very weird right now,” the writer and producer noted in a social media thread that highlights the topic from a creator’s perspective.
It follows the HBO Max slate review that led to shows such as Westworld, The Nevers and Love Life being pulled from the streamer as well as the cancellation of shows such as Minx, which had been renewed for a second season.
Somerville said that a DVD of his Paramount TV Studios-produced series was now available even if the creative team had been “caught off guard” by its appearance.
“The only way to really ensure shows remain available is that they generate too much interest (and completion) for anyone to justify removing them,” he tweeted. “If you take anything from this thread,...

Film Independent announced the TV nominations for the 2023 Film Independent Spirit Awards on Tuesday morning, with four shows in particular leading the pack. ABC’s beloved comedy “Abbott Elementary,” FX’s critical darling “The Bear,” the HBO Max limited series “Station Eleven” and the acclaimed Apple TV+ drama “Severance” scored the most nominations of any show with three each.
The Apple TV+ series “Pachinko” won the Best Ensemble award.
New this year, as with the film nominees, is a switch to gender neutral acting awards with the Best Actor and Best Actress categories replaced by a 10-nominee Best Lead Performance in a New Scripted Series award. In addition to this change, a Best Supporting Performance in a New Scripted Series award has been added to honor performances outside of the leading roles.
The 38th Film Independent Spirit Awards will be held on March 4, 2023, in Santa Monica. Check out the film nominees here.

Yesterday, news broke that Damon Lindelof, co-creator of hit shows like “Lost” and “The Leftovers,” was working on a new “Star Wars” feature film, to be directed by Oscar-winning documentarian and “Ms. Marvel” director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.
Now TheWrap has confirmed that Justin Britt-Gibson will co-write the screenplay alongside Lindelof. In addition, other new details have emerged about what the project is and how Lindelof is developing the story.
According to a report in THR, a writers’ room was convened shortly after Star Wars Celebration, the all-“Star Wars” convention that was held in Anaheim, California, across the street from Disneyland earlier this year. The writer’s room was held for two weeks in July and included participation from Lindelof’s “Leftovers” collaborator (and “Station Eleven” creator) Patrick Somerville; “Obi-Wan Kenobi” consulting producer Rayna McClendon and Andy Greenwald, creator of the short-lived but deeply brilliant USA series “Briarpatch,” which had the...

Us "Star Wars" fans have been waiting patiently for any word on what is next for the saga. We're getting a ton of "Star Wars" stories on Disney+ and we can be thankful for all the Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni work there, but what made all of us fall in love with this particularly fascinating galaxy are the movies.
Patty Jenkins's "Rogue Squadron" movie has been delayed to the point where nobody's sure if that's gonna happen anymore and Rian Johnson's proposed spin-off trilogy still shows signs of life from time to time, but hasn't made any real progress since it was announced. So, what will the next step for theatrical "Star Wars" be?
Well, on Sunday we found out Damon Lindelof's long-rumored stab at a "Star Wars" film was moving along and that there was a director attached. That director is being pulled from the Disney family: "Ms.

It was reported over the weekend that Damon Lindelof was writing a new Star Wars movie which will be directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (Ms. Marvel), and now THR has a few more details to share.
Sources told THR that the new Star Wars movie would take place after the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. They add that although it won’t be a continuation of the Skywalker Saga, it could feature some of the characters who appeared in The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, and The Rise of Skywalker. There are plenty of characters who were underused in the Sequel Trilogy, even some of the main ones, so this could prove a great opportunity to revisit them.

The secret Star Wars movie project that is being led creatively by Damon Lindelof was thrust into the open Sunday night when it was revealed that Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, who directed two episodes of Ms. Marvel, was on board as helmer.
The project has been in the works for months, and while Lindelof is getting the Wookiee-sized share of attention, thanks in no small part to a pedigree that includes co-creating TV sensation Lost and shepherding the acclaimed HBO series Watchmen, he is by no means the only person involved in the project.
In fact, if Lost and Watchmen, as well as The Leftovers, another beloved series Lindelof created, have shown anything, it’s that one of the writer’s chief talents is picking gifted collaborators.

Timing, in a sense, was both against and on the side of "Station Eleven" when it premiered in December 2021. Created by Patrick Somerville and adapted from Emily St. John Mandel's 2014 novel of the same name, the HBO miniseries centers on the outbreak of a deadly flu virus. Over the course of one fateful chilly night, those lucky enough to avoid being infected barricade themselves in their homes with whatever supplies they can find. Meanwhile, power grids crash and planes plummet to the ground outside.
For many, a series about a pandemic was understandably the last thing they wanted to watch two years into our own global health crisis. But for others, "Station Eleven" offered a cathartic viewing experience, namely because the show isn't really about a virus wreaking havoc on the planet. Instead, much of the series takes place either right after the outbreak begins or 20 years later when...

Exclusive: Television executive and producer Erynn Baldwin, most recently founder and CEO of the storytelling app Lugu, has joined Brian Grazer and Ron Howard’s Imagine Television as Vice President. In her new role, Baldwin will be responsible for bringing in new projects and developing series across comedy and drama.
Baldwin will be joining the television team which includes SVP James Seidman, VP Natalie Berkus, and Director of Development Nicole Scott, across a strong slate of projects.
“Erynn is going to be an incredible addition to the Imagine team,” said Kristen Zolner, Head of Imagine Television. “She is an excellent executive, who cultivates strong relationships with her creative partners through her curiosity and passion for storytelling.”
Baldwin launched Lugu during the Covid-19 pandemic. She built the app, which helps users create and share their life story, after seeing that there was no simple way for her grandmother to capture her legacy in the digital age.

Where do you go after the unthinkable has happened? It's a question people in the real world have been trying to answer as they've navigated the pandemic for the past two years. It also speaks to the heart of "Station Eleven," an affecting HBO miniseries based on Emily St. John Mandel's 2014 post-apocalyptic novel of the same name.
In a plot that hits more than a little close to home after 2020, "Station Eleven" centers on a deadly flu pandemic that wipes out much of the world's population, bringing society to its knees. However, where a franchise like "The Terminator" tends to focus more on the battle to cancel the apocalypse, "Station Eleven" is much more concerned with what comes after, when those who survived have to figure out how to start living again in this strange new world.
Among the characters at the heart of "Station Eleven" is Kirsten, who's...

It’s been written in the stars that two stand-out comic book character actors will come together for Ursa Major, an upcoming science-fiction thriller from the Baker Brothers. Xochitl Gomez (Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness) and Mary Elizabeth Winstead are joining forces for the new project as a mother and daughter duo fighting to survive.
Jonathan and Josh Baker direct Ursa Major, featuring the story of Charlie (Winstead) and Natalie (Gomez), a mother and daughter pair of survivors trapped on a harsh Earth-like planet. As a deadly storm heads toward the planetoid, the duo avoids encroaching elements, crazed hunters, and more. While Natalie has always trusted her mother, she’s beginning to question the strategies they’ve used to survive and thinks it might be time to change who leads the charge.

The creators and star of the HBO Max series Station Eleven became worried about releasing a show about a pandemic during the second year of the Covid pandemic. However, creator Patrick Somerville, director Hiro Murai and star Himesh Patel focused on the limited series’ hopeful message.
“We just tried to stay true to our initial conceit, which was to make this pandemic show about intimacy and people, and not be about despair,” Murai said at Deadline’s Contenders Television: The Nominees award-season event.

Train rides have proven to be a mixed bag for Himesh Patel.
In HBO Max’s Emmy-nominated limited series “Station Eleven,” Patel’s character, Jeevan Chaudhary, is on an outbound Chicago train when his physician sister calls to inform him of a lethal virus seizing the city. It’s a sobering conversation — one made all the more surreal by real-world events — that forever changes the course of Jeevan’s life. He heeds her warning to prepare for the worst, becoming one of the few survivors left to forge mankind’s future.
In a twist of fate, Patel was aboard a train on Emmy nominations morning, headed to visit his parents in London, when his phone lit up with messages. This time, good news was waiting. He had been nominated for lead actor in a limited series, the sole thespian among the ensemble to be recognized.

One of the biggest surprises on Emmy nominations morning showed up in the Best Limited/Movie Writing category when “Impeachment: American Crime Story” got nominated, a season that many pundits were clearly underestimating, as lead actress Sarah Paulson also nabbed a bid. This category is especially stunning in that half of these six shows are not nominated in the program category, despite most of them being predicted in this race. That said, as far as potential winners, the two nomination leaders, “The White Lotus” and “Dopesick,” will be battling it out to see who comes out on top.
Here are Gold Derby’s current Best Limited/Movie Writing Emmy 2022 racetrack odds:
“The White Lotus” (Mike White) – 10/3 odds
“Dopesick” (“The People vs. Purdue Pharma” by Danny Strong) — 4/1 odds
“Station Eleven” (“Unbroken Circle” by Patrick Somerville) — 5/1 odds

“Succession” dominated this year’s Emmy nominations with 25 noms — including a record-breaking 14 in the acting categories, the most ever for a series. But beyond the upcoming Season 4, HBO/HBO Max chief content officer Casey Bloys said there’s no report yet on how much longer the show will continue after that.
“Those questions, ‘How many more seasons do you want to go and do you have the story to tell?’ We always will defer to our showrunners,” Bloys told Variety on Tuesday afternoon, still on a high after HBO and HBO Max scored a combined 140 nominations — a new record for the company, beating out a singular HBO’s 137 nods in 2019. “So that is really for [creator] Jesse Armstrong to decide. He wanted to break this season, the fourth season, and then see how he was feeling. I think he’s currently deciding what he wants to do. I don’t think...

There are 110 submissions on the 2022 Emmys ballot for Best Limited or Anthology Series or Movie Writing, resulting in six nominees. As a reminder, last year’s winner was “I May Destroy You” (Michaela Coel) and the other nominees were “The Queen’s Gambit” (Scott Frank), “Mare of Easttown” (Brad Inglesby) and three episodes from “Wandavision”.
The low number of entries in this year’s Best Limited/Movie Writing category can be attributed to the fact that all the top contenders have submitted only one or two episodes from their series when given the option. Danny Strong, a previous winner for “Game Change” in this category a decade ago, entered the “Dopesick” finale, “The People vs. Purdue Pharma.” Other programs that submitted their final episodes were “Maid” (“Snaps”) and “Station Eleven” (“Unbroken Circle”) by their respective showrunners Molly Smith Metzler and Patrick Somerville, which is not a bad method given that seven...

“Deep Dive” is a in-depth podcast and video essay series with the stars and creative team behind an exceptional piece of filmmaking. For this spring edition, the IndieWire Crafts team partnered with HBO Max to take a closer look at the limited series ”Station Eleven” with creator Patrick Somerville, star Mackenzie Davis, and nine key members of the creative team behind the series finale “Unbroken Circle.”
Endings are hard for any television show, but at times the odds of “Station Eleven” pulling off a satisfying conclusion seemed about as low as, well, surviving a global pandemic that wipes out 99 percent of the world’s population. There is an episodic nature to the series: Instead of stringing out one single story over 10 hours, creator Patrick Somerville and team explore the lives of a far-flung ensemble impacted by a deadly flu virus. “Station Eleven” skips freely through time, from the first hours...

“It is about what really matters to us when everything’s gone and that is art and love,” declares Matilda Lawler about the young teenager she portrays on “Station Eleven,” the HBO Max limited series set in the aftermath of a fictional catastrophic pandemic that wipes out most of civilization. For our recent webchat the wise-beyond-her-years 13 year-old actress adds, “I love that it was such a hopeful story.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

At the beginning of HBO Max’s Station Eleven, Jeevan Chaudhary (Himesh Patel) attends a performance of King Lear in which the lead actor suddenly drops dead during the show. In the chaos that ensues, he takes under his care child actor Kirsten Raymond (Matilda Lawler) with the intention of returning her home to her parents. However, when he gets a call from his doctor sister informing him that a deadly flu pandemic is rapidly spreading across the globe, Jeevan springs into action with Kirsten by his side — but must act calmly to avoid frightening the young girl. Showrunner Patrick Somerville reflects on an important scene from the pilot in which Jeevan and Kirsten’s connection is solidified.
“It’s been verified for the audience that there’s an emergency,” Somerville says of this scene in the parking lot of a Chicago supermarket.
