The latest round of Outlander spinoff casting includes an Easter Egg for a subset of the book-loyal fandom.
Starz on Wednesday announced the addition of four roles to the forthcoming prequel, Blood of My Blood. Among them: Watchmen‘s Sara Vickers in the part of Brian Fraser’s mother (and, therefore, Jamie Fraser’s grandmother). The character is a housekeeper in the Lovat household, which is good and all, but we’re super into how she’s also named after someone many devotees of author Diana Gabaldon will recognize: Davina Porter, who narrates the audiobook versions of Gabaldon’s Outlander book series.

In the near future humanity is doomed and our options are being determined by AI simulation – unfortunately for us, the AI doesn’t seem particularly bothered if we survive
This intriguing sci-fi thriller is a throwback to the kind of cerebral teleplays and low-budget movies that flourished in the 1960s: ripe with gloomy lighting and dystopian pessimism, but with barely enough money in the budget to pay for more than two sets. Think On the Beach from 1959, or Seconds from 1966 – but then lower your expectations because it’s not anywhere in their league. But it’s not bad, and the subject is timely.
The time is a couple of decades in the future, and humanity has accepted that we’ve messed up the planet beyond repair. The only answer is to start colonies off-world, starting with the moon. Helping to sow these seeds for the future is an AI called...

Outlander‘s upcoming spinoff Outlander: Blood of My Blood has already begun casting some familiar characters, which poses a big question: Will the new series include Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan)? In a universe that involves time travel, it seems like the door could certainly be open to the possibility, but considering this will be an original story not previously shared by author Diana Gabaldon, there’s no source material to reference for such Easter eggs. Blood of My Blood will chronicle the love stories between Claire’s parents Julia Moriston (Hermione Corfield) and Henry Beauchamp (Jeremy Irvine) in World War I England as well as Jamie’s parents Ellen MacKenzie (Harriet Slater) and Brian Fraser (Jamie Roy) in the 18th-century Scottish Highlands. Outlander may be gearing up for its endgame, but the franchise is far from over.
Outlander: Blood of My Blood was ordered into a series and is officially in production.
But the series will differ slightly from the initial plan, and we’re sure the passionate fans of the franchise will welcome the changes.
When the show scored a formal pickup, it would be a prequel following Jamie’s (Sam Heughan) father and mother, Brian Fraser and Ellen MacKenzie.
While they will both remain in the mix for the new series, we’ll also be delving into Claire’s (Caitriona Balfe) past thanks to the introduction of her parents, Julia Moriston and Henry Beauchamp.
Interestingly, the original series has kept details about Julia and Henry under wraps, thanks to Claire’s limited memories of them.
Claire has few memories of her parents on Outlander

The original Doughtlander may not be over, but Outlander: Blood of My Blood hopes to close the gap.
For sure, it will be taking over where Outlander leaves off, even if it explores a story long before Jamie and Claire were figments of their parents' imagination.
Here’s what we know bout Blood of My Blood Season 1 so far.
What is Outlander?
It’s best to start with what we know, which is what came before. Outlander is based on a series of books by author Diana Gabaldon.
Outlander is a time-traveling love story between 20th-century (married) nurse Claire Beauchamp Randall Fraser and 18th-century Jamie Fraser.
When visiting the ancestral home of her husband, Frank, Claire stumbles through the rocks at Craigh na Dun, which takes her back in time.
Unable to easily find her way back, the sassy lady leans on handsome laird Jamie for protection, and soon, they are in love.

What do you get when you combine Pierce Brosnan, Nick Cannon, and some people called Jamie Chung, Hermione Corfield, Rockmond Dunbar, Rami Jaber, and Mike Angelo? A massive flop, apparently. In a way, it's a shame "The Misfits" bombed back in 2021. The film made a meager $1.5 million on a reported budget of $15 million, but despite the abject box office and even worse reviews, it was at least propelled by decent enough intentions.
Director Renny Harlin, who's also overseeing the upcoming "Strangers" trilogy series, grew up in Finland loving Hollywood action movies and thrillers, and managed to accomplish the impossible by breaking into the U.S. film market and establishing himself as a big name director. Films such as "Die Hard 2," "Cliffhanger," and "The Long Kiss Goodnight" helped cement his standing, but he also proved he had a penchant for horror by directing movies like "A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master,...

Two experimental films executive produced by Steven Soderbergh — Eddie Alcazar’s Divinity and Godfrey Reggio’s Once Within a Time – join Neon’s anticipated Cannes Palme d’Or winner Anatomy of a Fall in theaters today, a bit of counterprogramming on a weekend dominated by Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour.
Divinity, about a dark and creepy future populated by bodybuilders hooked on an elixir for eternal life, “was always made for the theater,” said Alcazar. “But it’s kind of a roll of the dice of what a distributor wants to do with it.” Utopia, which acquired the black-and-white romp — set mostly in a mansion on a desert that looks like the moon — after its Sundance premiere (see Deadline review), opens Divinity at Regal Union Square in NYC, expanding to Los Angeles next week, with a national rollout on 11/3.
There will be opening-weekend Q&As with Alcazar, Soderbergh, star Stephen Dorff and DJ Muggs.

Pierce Brosnan and Tim Roth are among the actors cheapening their reputations with half-baked tale of noble robbers in caricatured nation of ‘Jazeristan’
This film is the utterly mirthless equivalent of someone who takes you out to dinner, buys a terrible meal, keeps cracking rubbish jokes and then pokes you in the ribs every 10 minutes as they repeatedly ask (without listening for an answer): “Isn’t this fun? Isn’t this fun?” No, it is not fun. Not even in a so-bad-it’s-good way.
A roster of talent that has either seen more glorious days – director Renny Harlin, stars Pierce Brosnan, Nick Cannon and Tim Roth – or are about to have their careers mildly blighted by association – younger cast members Jamie Chung, Hermione Corfield, Mike Angelo and Rami Jabar – are assembled for a half-baked heist plot set in, as someone describes sneeringly, “some country called Jazeristan”. There’s a wild rage against the backdrop of amazing landscape in an adaptation of John MacKay’s novel about a sex assault in a crofting community
This Scottish period drama is “inspired” by true events and adapted from a novel by John MacKay, who says he based his book on something told to him as a boy: a story about a newborn baby found floating in the sea near his grandparents’ house on the Outer Hebrides. It struck me watching the film that it must really inspired by thousands of true events unrecorded by history: of women being raped and keeping silent out of fear – afraid of being blamed or not believed at all. Otherwise, it’s a heartfelt, nostalgic film with traditional, almost old-fashioned, storytelling, and acting that feels a bit stiff in places. Though there’s nothing inhibited about the wild beauty of the Hebridean landscape photographed by cinematographer Petra Korner.

Given the challenges the film industry has faced across the last year as a result of the pandemic, with cinemas closed globally, and films being screened primarily into living rooms, never has the value of an audience felt more essential. With that in mind, we should also put some value on the aforementioned audience’s opinions, too, and when it came to the recent Edinburgh International Film Festival, the watching faithful had one award to vote on, the prestigious Audience Award. This prize went to Richie Adams’ quietly powerful, and moving period drama The Road Dance – and it’s a more than deserving of this accolade.

The Scottish island melodrama, which is set against the backdrop of the start of the first World War had its world premiere at the festival, which screened 86 in person films to a total audience of 12,000.
Richie Adams, director of The Road Dance said: “When I first learned of our acceptance to the festival, I was ecstatic. Eiff is such a prestigious festival, and where better to launch a Scottish film than Edinburgh. It was wonderful to be with some of our cast and crew at the world premiere and getting the chance to see everyone’s hard work pay off on the big screen. It’s a huge honour to win the...

This feature debut from American director Richie Adams is firmly in the tradition of the likes of Catherine Cookson and Barbara Taylor-Bradford, although the novel source material here was written by a man, John Mackay, which unfortunately shows in its inability to truly get under the skin of its heroine. It has the well-made but familiar feel of a Sunday evening drama on ITV or the Beeb - a slot that it could well find itself occupying at some time in the future, especially after taking home the Audience Award after its Eiff world premiere.
Set in the run up to the First World War on the Hebridean Isle of Lewis, the story takes place in the tiny coastal village of Garenin. It is here that Kirsty Macleod (Hermione Corfield) lives on a croft with her mother (Morvern Christie) and sister Annie (Ali Fumiko Whitney) since the death of her.

It’s an awfully long way from Louisiana to the Isle of Lewis in Scotland’s Outer Hebrides, but for Richie Adams, it was a journey worth taking. The American filmmaker, previously best known for U.S.-set indies “Of Mind and Music” and “Inventing Adam,” has made the most expansive, ambitious film of his career in “The Road Dance.”
Appropriately having its world premiere at the Edinburgh Film Festival, the film is a sweeping rural melodrama centered on first love, the horrors of war and patriarchal oppression in a small Scottish village some years before the First World War. The change of pace has unleashed a burst of creative energy in Adams, who has two new features — an adaptation of the nonfiction book “Mr. Townsend and the Polish Prince” and an original screenplay, “Pedro Pan” — written and, in his words, “ready to go.”

Had “The Misfits” been made 22 years earlier — say, in the sweet spot between James Bond globe-trotter “The World Is Not Enough” and the release of Guy Ritchie’s “Snatch” — chances are, audiences would’ve had a pretty good time watching “Die Hard 2” director Renny Harlin’s idea of a cutting-edge heist movie. “The Misfits” stars Pierce Brosnan as one of half a dozen not-so-petty criminals who team up to knock off a for-profit prison in Abu Dhabi, where the guy who built it (Tim Roth) has been stockpiling blood money for terrorists in the form of well-secured gold bars.
But this is 2021, and Harlin — who peaked with “Cliffhanger,” bombed with “Cutthroat Island” and has been treading water ever since — is still making movies for ’90s sensibilities. Even the idea of a team of rule-breakers who pool their talents (all of which seem perfectly suited for breaking the law) to...
