Exclusive: Comedian and writer Julian Clary (Julian Clary: Live – Lord of the Mince) will play the title role in this festive season’s London Palladium pantomime Robin Hood, with singer and travel show presenter Jane McDonald (Cruising with Jane McDonald) topping the bill as Maid Marion.
The annual Palladium show, now in its ninth consecutive season, has become an eagerly awaited staple in the West End’s calendar. It runs from December 7 through January 12, 2025. Priority booking opens 10 Am (GMT) April 25.
Last year’s production, Peter Pan, with comedy legend Jennifer Saunders making her pantomime debut as Captain Hook, and with Clary playing Seaman Smee, was a sold-out success, playing 56 performances -often two a day – to an audience of more than 123,000 at the 2,200 capacity variety house.
When tickets went on sale, there was a moment when 90,000 people were in the queue, waiting their turn to book seats.

Avatar: The Last Airbender and the Marvel Cinematic Universe are perhaps two of the most talked-about franchises at the moment; the former because the creators of the original show announced a movie being in the works and the latter because Deadpool and Wolverine is due for release soon.

The animated fantasy TV show, which aired for a total of three seasons, from 2005 to 2008, featured an ensemble cast of voice actors. One such actor is Dante Basco, who once opened up about the Marvel/X-Men character he would like to portray.

Jason Isaacs is best recognized for his portrayal of Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter movies. He has been acting for over three decades, appearing in various films, TV shows, and stage productions.
Isaacs voiced the character Zhao in seven episodes of Avatar: The Last Airbender. Nearly eight years later, he returned to the franchise for a cameo appearance as the same character in one episode of The Legend of Korra (set in the fictional world of Avatar: The Last Airbender).

Setting the Stage for Storybrooke’s Charm Let’s take a trip down memory lane to where it all began, shall we? The pilot episode of ‘Once Upon a Time’ tossed us into Storybrooke without a life jacket, and boy, did we swim. This quaint little town, with its secret fairy tale DNA, had us all wishing for a wardrobe change—cloak and dagger style. Introduction of Storybrooke wasn’t just an intro to the characters; it was a full-blown invitation to the ball. And who could resist? Remember when Captain Hook teamed up with Aladdin and Jasmine in ‘A Wondrous Place’? That was...

On June 17, 1972, thieves acting on behalf of Richard Nixon's presidential campaign broke into the Watergate Hotel in Washington DC, the location of the Democratic National Committee headquarters. The group was looking for papers and secrets that would have given Nixon an unfair advantage in the election. Nixon was bafflingly still elected during this kerfuffle and served as president for two more years before enough details about the break-in emerged to warrant his infamous resignation from office. The many, many details of the Watergate scandal have been recorded in innumerable books, documentaries, and Hollywood dramas in the ensuing decades, and Watergate shows are being made to this day; the miniseries "Gaslit" aired in 2022 and "White House Plumbers" in 2023.
The Watergate scandal represented a loss of American innocence for many. It was positive proof that the Republican party was openly corrupt. The scandal was bad enough, but then Gerald Ford pardoned Nixon of all his recorded,...

Dorit Kemsley has made no secret of the fact that she has been going through it on recent seasons of “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills,” after a 2021 home invasion in which armed men threatened her and her two children. On Season 13 of the series, which began on Oct. 25, she’s shown on camera that she’s been struggling in her marriage to Paul “P.K.” Kemsley as a result of his lack of empathy for her, and his seeming refusal to understand her Ptsd. Shortly after the show premiered, In Touch reported that they had split — and the Bravo gossip machine went into overdrive.

The Beatles are so famous they influenced a Pirates of the Caribbean film. The movie includes Paul McCartney singing a song from The Beatles’ Let It Be. Despite the scene’s accuracy to the time period, it feels like a cynical move from Disney.
Paul McCartney sings The Beatles’ ‘Maggie Mae’ in ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’
In Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, The Rolling Stones’ Keith Richards plays Jack Sparrow’s father. The most recent film in the series, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, features Paul as Jack Sparrow’s uncle. It’s basically the same joke, and it’s not any funnier the second time around.
The latter film features an actual Beatles song — sort of. When Paul’s character is first introduced, we hear him sing a snippet of the folk tune “Maggie Mae.” The Beatles covered that folk tune on their final album,...

In Ron DeSantis’ astonishingly pointless vendetta against Walt Disney World, it seems the Florida governor’s favorite insult to use against the corporation is “wokeness.” Ever since former CEO Bob Chapek criticized the governor’s homophobic and transphobic Parental Rights in Education Act — which forbids discussion of gender and sexual identity in public schools — DeSantis and his supporters have repeatedly accused the entertainment conglomerate of “echoing Democrat propaganda,” and engaged in a vicious legal battle over Disney World’s self-governing tax status that’s proved a huge headache for the state.
To hear DeSantis tell it, you’d think Disney World was a paradise for gays, and Mickey himself threw the first brick at Stonewall. That’s hyperbole, yes, but not by much. The reality makes Disney look far less rosy. For starters, Chapek (who has since been fired and replaced with his predecessor Bob Iger) initially stayed mum on...

Steven Spielberg has one of the most impressive filmographies that cinema has to offer. But not everyone’s film resume is flawless, including Spielberg’s.
There’s one feature in his iconic roster of films that the director didn’t enjoy making. But it also turned out to be one of his children’s favorite movies.

Jude Law caused quite a stink on the set of his upcoming film Firebrand by wearing a custom poop-scented perfume to recreate Henry VIII’s supposed stench.
“I read several interesting accounts that you could smell Henry three rooms away. His leg was rotting so badly,” Law said during a press conference for the movie at Cannes Film Festival (via Variety). “He hid it with rose oil. I thought it would have a great impact if I smelt awful.”
For the sake of authenticity, Law sought out a perfume specialist and tried to reproduce the former King of England’s odor, which partially emanated from the leg ulcers he suffered in his final years. “She makes wonderful scents, and she also makes awful scents. She somehow came up with this extraordinary variety of blood, fecal matter, and sweat.”
Though Law initially “used it very subtly,” he eventually went overboard, and “it became a spray-fest.

Hopefully, those May flowers will start blooming soon after the many April (and previous months’) showers. But whatever the weather, Netflix has a solid selection of new movies to watch this month.
Netflix’s May lineup has several bright and joyful animated films as well as more serious stories with light at the end of the tunnel. Tom Hanks’ latest theatrical release “A Man Called Otto” arrives on the streaming service, adapted from Frederick Backman’s book “A Man Called Ove” and following the story of a grumpy old man who struggles to find purpose in life after the death of his wife.
Animated adventures for the whole family include “The Croods” and “The Tale of Desperaux” which teach lessons of bravery in their own ways. For those in the mood for slightly quirkier stories, Jason Moore’s “Pitch Perfect” and “Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events” should do the trick.

David Lowery became an indie film darling with projects like “The Green Knight” and “A Ghost Story,” but he has become equally prolific as a Disney filmmaker. After finding success with his live-action take on “Pete’s Dragon,” he collaborated with the studio again on “Peter Pan & Wendy,” which is now streaming on Disney+. But per usual, his reimagining of the Disney classic was shaped by the more adult-oriented projects that he enjoys.
In a new interview with The New York Times, Lowery opened up about the films that influenced “Peter Pan & Wendy.” He found inspiration in some unlikely sources, including Andrei Tarkovsky’s “Mirror.” He explained that Peter Pan and Tinkerbell’s introduction scenes, where they sprinkle pixie dust on the sleeping Darling children, were inspired by certain levitation shots in the surreal classic.
He was also inspired by some more modern films, including Martin Scorsese’s “Gangs of New York.

Peter Pan has seen as many adaptations as anyone, they come around every few decades, and every now and again one sticks with a generation for a lifetime. The 1953 Disney original certainly had that, as too did 1991s Hook, the film that stuck with me and my generation. Since then the only other adaption that has stuck was the 2003 adaption. The 2003 adaption was another good entry into the legend of Peter Pan, and like the films before, it hooked onto a generation that still love that film today. When a Peter Pan adaptation is done even half right, it finds itself stuck to a generation, it is perhaps a testament to the story J.M. It’s a slow week for new releases, both in theaters and at home. “Are You There, God? It’s Me, Margaret” deserves to be an Oscar contender — let’s get Rachel McAdams‘ supporting-actress campaign started pronto — but you’ll have to leave the couch to see that one. Without venturing to the multiplex, you can catch two favorites from the Oscars’ most recent shortlists and two new movies with very different sensibilities.
This contender to watch this week: “Moonage Daydream”

The film made last year’s Oscar shortlist but was left out when nominations were announced, surprising many who thought this kaleidoscopic profile would be a shoo-in for Best Documentary Feature. Make no mistake, "Peter Pan and Wendy" director David Lowery definitely has an affinity for the horror genre, but he wanted to make sure that the new Disney+ children adventure wasn't as dark as it looked at first glance. Lowery's melancholy supernatural drama "A Ghost Story" starring Casey Affleck wearing a bed sheet is hauntingly beautiful, and his take on the 14th-century Arthurian adventure "The Green Knight" is steeped in some fairly gruesome imagery. The entire tale does center around a beheading, after all.
Of course, the latest adaptation of the classic children's story, starring Jude Law as Captain Hook and Alexander Molony as Peter Pan, is still a fairly lighthearted adventure. But that doesn't mean that Lowery didn't leave a few, shall we say, revolting details in the background for eagle-eyed viewers to catch. Jude Law had a trick up his sleeve to get along with child actors.
The actor played the fearsome Captain Hook in Disney’s live-action adaptation of “Peter Pan and Wendy”, a role which saw him acting alongside the cast of children.
In order to maintain the air of intimidation, he was apparently instructed by director David Lowery to never break character in front of them.

Disney continues its streak of live-action adaptations of its most popular animated characters with Peter Pan and Wendy. We have already got Pinocchio, Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, The Lion King, Maleficent and many more. Some of them were hits, and some of them weren’t. With more on their release slate and even more in development, it seems that it will do Disney good if they slow down. Pinocchio was a failure. Aladdin and Mulan were also harsh setbacks. Considering that these are all beloved characters that we would love to see on the big screen, Disney needs to be more careful before doing so and not spoil it for us. Peter Pan and Wendy is another not-so-convincing live-action take on the popular children’s character. Other than Jude Law’s rendition of Captain Hook, which is brilliant, the other characters fail to make an impression, especially Alexander Molony’s Peter Pan.

Jude Law revealed that he stayed in character as Captain Hook for the duration of shooting the upcoming film, Peter Pan and Wendy, acting “really scary and mean” even towards the child actors on set. But, he made it up to them in the end by finally breaking character and driving an ice cream van onto set for everyone to enjoy.
“It sounds kinda awful,” Law laughed, sitting in the guest seat on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon Thursday night. He explained: “David Lowery, our wonderful director, had the idea of trying [to have the children] not see me when I wasn’t Hook, so I just stayed Hook the whole time… I didn’t want to be talking to a little 6-year-old [as] Jude, and then suddenly be like, ‘Right, you hate me, I’m Hook.’ So, instead, I just stuck as Hook.”

This post contains spoilers for "Peter Pan & Wendy."
As most children, and people who were once children, know, the cornerstone of the world of Peter Pan lies in his connection to Neverland. And though that world can be a beautiful place, there are some villains within it too — namely Peter's infamous rival, Captain Hook. In David Lowery's new Disney live-action adaptation, "Peter Pan & Wendy," viewers get the full story on what ultimately led to their feud, something that audiences don't see in the original 1953 film.
In the original film, all the audience is told is that the two characters are enemies, but we're not given any other backstory. Interestingly enough, it turns out these two are actually, more than anything, frenemies in Lowery's adaptation. Allow me to explain.
The new movie takes us back to Hook's childhood days, when he lived in Neverland as a boy named James.

Plot: Wendy Darling, a young girl afraid to leave her childhood home behind, meets Peter Pan, a boy who refuses to grow up. Alongside her brothers and a tiny fairy, Tinker Bell, she travels with Peter to the magical world of Neverland. There, she encounters the evil pirate Captain Hook and embarks on a thrilling and dangerous adventure that will change her life forever.
Review: In their seemingly neverending quest to refresh their animated IP with live-action remakes, Disney thought they would find luck by bringing auteur David Lowery back after his updated take of Pete’s Dragon to tackle a new Peter Pan feature film. Where Lowery imbued Pete’s Dragon, a less familiar title in the overall Disney canon, with realistic characters and emotionally grounded storytelling, his Peter Pan & Wendy is a rote remake that sticks pretty close to the 1953 original. Jude Law revealed on “The Tonight Show” that he stayed in character as Captain Hook any time he was on the set of David Lowery’s “Peter Pan and Wendy.” The Disney reimagining casts Law as the villainous pirate. To ensure the child actors on set would be scared of Hook, Lowery instructed Law not to reveal his true self until after filming.
“David Lowery had the idea of really trying to encourage them not to see me when I wasn’t Hook,” Law said. “So I just stayed as Hook the whole time, which was an opportunity just to be really scary and mean. Sounds kind of awful. I didn’t want to be talking to a little 6-year-old dude and then suddenly it’s like, ‘Right. You hate me. I’m Hook. I’m Hook.’ So, instead, I just stuck as Hook. As a retelling of both J.M. Barrie’s novel and Disney’s 1953 animated classic, Disney+‘s Peter Pan & Wendy is a mixed bag. But as a retelling via director David Lowery, it’s totally on-brand.
The first half-hour of the 106-minute movie (streaming now on Disney+) suggests a beat-for-beat retread (à la Jon Favreau’s The Lion King), but Lowery’s quirky preferences permit a more offbeat take. And once Peter, Wendy et al reach Neverland, the story takes on new life.

As written by J. M. Barrie in his original 1904 play, “Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up,” the century-old name Peter Pan has always been synonymous with a severe case of arrested development. More expressly, the fear of adulthood, the immature reluctance towards embracing the responsibilities and pains of being a grown-up, unable to gauge the earned rewards of such hardships.
So what could a 21st-century version of such arrested development look like? One that has something to say to today’s grown-ups both mesmerized and puzzled by a fiery younger generation vastly different than them, and today’s kids, being raised by an unprecedented sense of individuality? With “Peter Pan & Wendy,” soulful auteur David Lowery tries to find an answer with mixed results that’s fascinating and refreshing in parts and somewhat wearisome on the whole.

Peter Pan & Wendy takes up again the most classic Disney in, precisely, its anniversary, with one of its most iconic stories.
This time with the appeal of giving us Jude Law as Captain Hook.
Peter Pan & Wendy is a film directed by David Lowery starring Alexander Molony and Ever Anderson.
Peter Pan & Wendy (2023) About the Movie
A perfect opportunity to revisit a classic and make slight modifications to it? Well, that seems to be the idea of Disney and its screenwriters (the film infobox lists no less than ten people on the team).
Peter Pan & Wendy is everything we saw in the 1953 animated version, what we relived with more magic in Spielberg’s Hook and now we return to it with Jude Law playing the bad guy.

The actor’s full-throated performance as Captain Hook is the most distinctive thing in a passable but unnecessary Disney live-action remake
The increasingly rotten trend of turning classic Disney animations into wretched live-action, or photorealistic, remakes looks set to reach its nadir with next month’s release of The Little Mermaid, already a viral nightmare for its horrifying confirmation that adding lips to both a crab and a fish is indeed a crime against humanity. Its looming ugliness does at least help to make this month’s far more hushed release of the inoffensively fine Peter Pan & Wendy seem dreamy in comparison.
It almost seems foolish at this stage to question the necessity of such a thing, given the crushing commercial inevitability of it, but it’s impossible to watch yet another take on Jm Barrie’s impish hero without wondering why we’re here once again. Unlike so many of Disney’s other remakes,...

With “Peter Pan and Wendy,” Disney sets out to bring the boy who refused to grow up into the 21st century — not literally, like those taxing live-action/cartoon hybrids, where computer-generated Smurfs get loose in Manhattan or Tom and Jerry wreak havoc in a high-end hotel. The studio’s latest remake is still set in Edwardian England, the way both J.M. Barrie’s play and the animated feature it inspired were. But the sensibility is very much of the moment, as director David Lowery (who did an admirable job of updating “Pete’s Dragon” for Disney) refreshes the 1953 classic according to contemporary priorities.
In conception and casting both, the new movie presents a diverse and empowered ensemble. The vintage toon’s shameful Native American stereotypes have been corrected. The question you may be asking is ‘do we really need yet another take on Peter Pan? Ever since J.M. Barrie published his book “Peter And Wendy” in 1911 there have been countless film, TV, and stage versions of one stripe or another, starting with silents, and of course NBC’s live musical in the 50’s with Mary Martin, and later versions with Sandy Duncan, Cathy Rigby, and just a few years ago another NBC live attempt at it with Allison Williams. Of course there have been big screen spins, neither quite magical, like Joe Wright’s messy 2015 Pan and Spielberg’s overblown Hook with Robin Williams and Julia Roberts. Up to this moment even Broadway has a new Tony contender in the farcical take, Peter Pan Goes Wrong. But for me the one version that resonates the most, to this day, is the Disney 1953 animated feature classic.

In the summer of 2016, writer/director David Lowery pulled off what feels like a magic trick in retrospect: he made a Disney remake that was actually quite good. His take on "Pete's Dragon" may not have set the box office aflame, but his tender approach to a story about an orphaned boy in the forest with only a mammoth dragon for a friend resulted in a low-stakes but wonderful family adventure. Of course, the major reason why "Pete's Dragon" worked so well as a remake is that it eschewed almost everything aside from the aforementioned logline that's present in the 1977 original, from big musical numbers to con-artist bad guys. And "Pete's Dragon" was able to eschew those aspects because while the original has some fans, it's by no means one of Disney's biggest titles.
The same cannot be said for "Peter Pan & Wendy," Lowery's latest Disney remake, this time...

The first character to appear on screen in the first Disney animated feature film, “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” was not one of the titular characters, but rather the antagonist, known simply as the Evil Queen. The archetypal villain ended up with a screen time total of 12 minutes and eight seconds, over two-thirds of which she spends disguised as an old beggar woman. Although she appears in just under 15% of the film’s running time, the Queen still held the distinction of being the animated Disney villain with the most screen time for 16 years.
The Queen’s screen time record was broken in 1953 by Captain Hook, who is in the 14th Disney feature, “Peter Pan,” for 19 minutes and 56 seconds. Nearly 70 years later, even he has been knocked down a few pegs by other, more prominent Disney baddies, while the Queen has fallen to 20th place. Scroll through our photo...

For those that only know director David Lowery from his mystical Arthurian epic "The Green Knight" starring Dev Patel, it may seem a little strange to see his name attached to another retelling of the classic animated film "Peter Pan." But before the visionary filmmaker made the subdued haunter "A Ghost Story" and Robert Redford's "The Old Man and the Gun," Lowery also remade the 1977 children's fantasy musical "Pete's Dragon" for Disney. Returning to the House of Mouse, Lowery is all aboard for a new take on Neverland with "Peter Pan & Wendy" starring Jude Law in a great bit of casting as Captain Hook.
Peter Pan is so ingrained in pop culture that it can be a challenge to know what parts of the story to include and what aspects to avoid for fear of retelling the same version that audiences already know. To avoid those pitfalls, Lowery...

For Jude Law, getting to play Captain Hook has been a long time coming — and has a special significance for the Oscar-nominated star.
Law walked the carpet at the premiere of his new film, “Peter Pan & Wendy”, at the South Street Seaport Museum in New York City on Tuesday, and he spoke with Et about why playing Hook will have a unique meaning for his eldest son, 26-year-old Rafferty Law.
“I used to play as Hook opposite my son my eldest son, when he was a little boy,” Law recalled fondly. “So we’d kind of already been there together. And for him, it’ll be a really, really special experience, I think, seeing me actually as Hook.”
Law said that, in general, when it comes to choosing parts, “I tend to do the parts for myself, and what I find interesting.”

David Lowery's new film "Peter Pan & Wendy" will be the director's second remake of a Disney animated feature and his seventh feature overall. Lowery previously helmed the remake of "Pete's Dragon," where he turned a whimsical fantasy film into an earthier tale of a boy raised in the woods by a dragon slowly re-assimilating into human society. The dragon was amusing in Lowery's movie, but the director seemed far more interested in the inter-human relationships. Finding real human experiences inside of an outlandish, fantastical world may be said to be a common theme in Lowery's work.
This was also an element of his excellent and contemplative film "A Ghost Story," wherein a bedsheet-style ghost slowly reveals what caused it to start haunting in the first place. It was most certainly the central theme of his most recent film, "The Green Knight," an adaptation of the medieval poem about...

One can almost set their watch to film adaptations of J.M. Barrie's celebrated 1904 play "Peter and Wendy."
The story of the flying elf boy from Neverland and his friendship with a human girl from Earth was such a massive success and left such a strong cultural impact, that sequels and cross-media adaptations began cropping up only a few years after its debut. Barrie himself would turn the play into a novel in 1911, but that wasn't before he had already written two Peter Pan sequels in 1906 and 1908. The first filmed version of "Peter Pan" would be made by Herbert Brenon in 1924.
Perhaps the best-known adaptation, however, came to cinemas in 1953 when Walt Disney Studios released their animated version directed by Hamilton Luske, Clyde Geronimi, and Wilfred Jackson. The iconography from the Disney "Peter Pan" remains entrenched most firmly in the pop consciousness, and it continues to be one of the...

Disney's latest live-action riff on a classic is "Peter Pan & Wendy," a new adaptation of the classic "Peter Pan" story. Ever since first taking center stage in J.M. Barrie's 1904 stage play, Peter Pan and the magical land of Neverland have captured imaginations all over the world. The whimsical story with a hint of darkness has inspired plenty of movies, plays, and books over the years, each with a slightly different take on the Boy Who Never Grew Up. Here's a brief look back at all of the notable movie adaptations and how they each made the Neverland mythos their own.
"Peter Pan" (1924)
